El Penoncillo, Costa del Sol
El Penoncillo, Torrox Costa, Costa del Sol

Situation:

Situated near a small beach 4 miles from the lovely town of Nerja, and only about 45 minutes from Malaga, on the Costa de Sol, the villa is well placed for trips to nearby mountain villages (e.g. Frigiliana is one of the prettiest in the county of Andalucia), local caves, and the historic town of Granada. Water sports and night life abound in Nerja and water skiing is about 2 hours drive away. Gibraltar is approximately 90 miles drive along the coast.

The villa:

This high quality, privately owned villa, built in a style sympathetic to the local architecture, is both practical and elegant with a sea and mountain view.

In brief:

Two bedrooms, 1 twin and 1 double. A fifth bed can be brought in if required. Bed linen and towels provided for use within the villa. Please bring your own towels for use on the beach.

Luxury lounge/dining room with satellite television.

Bathroom has a bath, shower, wc and wash basin.

Kitchen with gas cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, coffee maker, washing machine, iron and ironing board.

The villa will be cleaned prior to your arrival.

There is a lovely garden with garden furniture, many different types of plants and flowers, a large pine tree perfect for shade on the hot days, a lovely lawn and a large barbecue. Regret no swimming pool on site.

Beaches and Restaurants:

The beach, 5 minutes walk down the hill from the villa, is good for sun bathing, paddling and generally relaxing on and there are several good restaurants, cafes and bars there. The seafood here is especially good. (Some of the beach cafes close in the winter). The sand is of the volcanic variety and is therefore quite dark in colour. If you prefer ‘golden’ sand this can be found on the beaches in and around Nerja (less than 10 mins drive).

There is also a small bar within the grounds of the nearby apartments (opening times variable), and many good restaurants, nightclubs and shops in Nerja. The nearest shops and supermarket are at Torrox Costa which is about 1/2 mile in the Malaga direction.

Directions:

The new N340 road by-passes Malaga making it unnecessary to go into the town centre.

On leaving the airport, initially follow the signs for Malaga N340 (left lane) NOT Torremelinos. Then follow signs for N340 and MOTRIL. If in doubt always follow the signs for Motril and you will end up on the N340 going eastwards. Follow the N340 East for approximately 38 miles (60 kms) through Torre-del-Mar and take the slip road off at Torrox. At the roundabout at the bottom take the turning for Torrox Costa / Nerja NOT Torrox as this road will take you inland to the old town. Follow the road down for approx ½ a mile to another roundabout where you turn left following the signs for Nerja / Almeria.

El Penoncillo is located less than a mile along this road beyond Torrox Costa on the left hand side.

Landmarks: On the beach on the right hand side there is a boat that has been converted into a restaurant (El Barca). The drive to El Penoncillo is the next turning on the left, opposite a large blue wigwam-shaped camping sign. Turn up the hill but do NOT turn left following signs for Camping or Supermarcado. After passing the second turning on the right the road becomes a dirt track. Take the third turning off to the right. Follow the track for 150 yards, past a house on the left, down and to the left. Outside Kitty’s house should be a red van. Kitty will be waiting to greet you. Please have the rest of your balance ready.

Car hire is recommended and prices usually start at around £ 85.00 per week for the small car.

House Rules:

1. Enjoy yourselves

2. Please be aware that this is a private villa: treat it with respect and return anything borrowed during your stay.

3. There should be plenty of laundry in the cupboards for your holiday, but please do not feel you have to use all of it. Someone has to wash it.

Hints:

1. Have a 100 peseta coin handy at Malaga airport for use in the luggage trolley coin slots.

2. If you have hired a car for pick-up at Malaga airport and your courtesy bus does not arrive, check you are waiting in the right place. This may sound obvious but it can be confusing. Most of the courtesy buses seem to stop in the underpass beneath the airport.

3. If you are arriving late at night, you may like to take something to drink in the villa. We have not noticed any health problems caused by drinking the local water but most people prefer bottled water from the fridge. Some small shops and many restaurants are open on Sunday, especially in season. However the majority of shops will be closed.

Security:

The area is very safe but, in common with most holiday destinations, there have been occasional incidents of theft so the normal, common sense precautions with valuables are advisable.

Flights:

If you do not have a local travel agent then why not try the one I use.
