Patrik Berger's performances for the Czech Republic were instrumental in
securing him a move to Anfield as he played a prominent role in helping his country reach the final of the competition. He had already scored six
goals in eight qualifying matches leading up to the finals and his impressive form continued despite the fact that he was somewhat
hampered with injury problems.
His move to Liverpool took place directly after Euro '96 and he arrived
at Anfield with a high reputation. Having started his career in his homeland with Sparta Prague, he made the move to Germany where he
helped Borussia Dortmund to the Bundesliga title.
Berger's Anfield debut was delayed because of injury, but he finally
made the perfect start to his Liverpool career when he cracked two second half goals on his debut to sink Leicester at Filbert Street. He
also scored a brace against Chelsea at Anfield the following week and crowned his first month in English football with the Player of the Month
award.
The 98/99 season was another good one for Patrik as he played forty matches and scored eight goals in the process. His ability to score from
long range allied with his energetic work in the middle of the field made him an integral part of Gérard Houllier's plans - indeed it was Houllier's
appointment as sole manager which persuaded Berger not to look for a
move elsewhere after a disappointing second season when he was in and out of the Liverpool team.
