Established in 1996, The Haiti Fund believes that one of the principle keys to progress in Haiti - one of the poorest countries in the world - is education.
The Fund's work aims to encourage the development of appropriate and innovative learning techniques in a country where schools are severely underfunded and teaching techniques often inadequate.
The Haiti Fund is addressing these problems initially by working closely with Haitian schools in the north of the country. As well as the provision of basic resources, The Haiti Fund (supported by the National Lottery Charities Board) is sending teachers to work in the country alongside local people to help develop the skills necessary for their needs. This partnership is proving as much of a learning experience for the teachers from Wales as for the Haitian pupils and staff.
In addition, Lottery funding is stimulating the production of ten original textbooks on themes of relevance to Haitian lives to be distributed freely in Haitian schools, as well as for use in Wales. The books are being printed in four languages, the two of Haiti (Creole and French) and the two of Wales (Welsh and English).
The Haiti Fund also arranges talks, conferences and exhibitions of Haitian artists work in the UK which is sold to support our initiatives.
