What is the Institute of Physics?

The Institute of Physics is a leading international professional body and learned society, established to promote the advancement and dissemination of a knowledge of and education in the science of physics, pure and applied.  The Institute has a world-wide membership and is a major international player in:

·       scientific publishing and electronic dissemination of physics;

·       setting professional standards for physicists and awarding professional qualifications;

·       promoting physics through scientific conferences, education and science policy advice.

The Institute works in collaboration with national physical societies, sharing information and working jointly to promote the interests of physics, and makes its educational materials, policy statements and other services available internationally.  It plays an important role in trans-national societies such as the European Physical Society and represents British and Irish physicists in international organisations.

In Great Britain and Ireland the Institute is active in:

·       providing support for physicists in all professions and careers;

·       encouraging physics research and its applications;

·       providing support for physics in schools, colleges and universities;

·        influencing government and informing public debate.

Who joins the Institute of Physics?

Your lecturers, your friends, your future employers…..

We have 30,000 members worldwide of which 7000 are students.

5400 are undergraduates – reading physics, astrophysics, medical physics, space science …. Or any other physics related degree!

The balance are students on graduate courses, working towards an MSc, PGCE, PhD, etc.

Nearly a third of our members work in industry!

This means that we have very good contacts with employers of physics graduates.  This includes our network of corporate affiliates – a network of companies who support physics research and Institute activities.

Membership grades are:

Affiliate (for non-physicists)

Student (for undergraduates only)

Associate (for graduates)

Member  (for more experienced physicists)

Fellow (for distinguished physicists!)

What’s in it for me?

Institute of Physics members receive:

·       Physics World (the monthly journal with the latest events and news for the physics community)

·       Free diary (with physical constants and obligatory London Underground Map!)

·       Access to PhysicsWeb - the member's only site for physics

·       Discounts on Institute organised conferences

·       3 free electronic journals

·       Discounts on Institute of Physics Publishing books, journals and magazines

Nexus is the student wing of the Institute of Physics and all student members are automatically part of Nexus, this means that...

Students also receive:

·       Nexus News (dedicated newsletter, three times a year, with student events and news).

·       Informative booklets on topics "Sponsorship & Work placement"

·       Contact with IAPS - the International Association of Physics Students

This year Nexus will be hosting IAPS' annual conference - the International Conference of Physics Students in Dublin, August 2001

·       Competitions - T-shirt design, lecture & poster competitions, crosswords

·       Special student events - such as the Young Physicists Conference!

·       Dedicated student website - with useful information and links (such as summer placement schemes) and a bulletin board (see http://www.iop.org/st.html)

·       Free membership of one of the Institute's subject groups (organise meetings and newsletters in a particular field of physics)

Where can I find out more?

 The Institute of Physics employs Sam Rae as a full time Student Liaison Officer – get in touch if you have questions or suggestions for student membership and activities (email nexus@iop.org)

The Notice board in your Chadwick physics lab displays all the latest Nexus announcements.

A member of staff in your department acts as a Higher Education Rep for the Institute of Physics.   Dr. Steve Barrett.

A student in your department acts as the Student Rep for the Institute of Physics.    Craig Crennell, (3rd Year Undergraduate).

The Institute website has lots of information about our activities at www.iop.org

How do I join?

This all sounds amazing – but I’ll bet it costs a fortune!
