Leaving the railway embankment and walking towards Llanymynech the canal is in water although not quite at its original level. |
Looking across the canal in the direction of Llanymynech Hill, evidence of the area's industrial past can be seen in the form of a derelict works chimney. |
As you approach the wharfage area, you begin to see remains of the stone bank retaining walls. |
The entrance to one of the arms now comes into view. An edge-rail tramway used to run alongside here bringing lime from Llanymynech quarry. |
Entrances to arms are well hidden by overgrown trees shrubs and Brambles. |
A gap in the herbage reveals more of the wharf area as a mallard drake swims peacefully by. |
The wharf by British Waterways Llanymynech maintenance yard. There is a car park adjacent to this yard for access to the Heritage Area. |
Road bridge carrying the A483 trunk road over the canal. Timber supports can be seen in the centre of the bridge. Stop planks are also in place. |
On the south side of the Llanymynech road bridge we come to a winding point. At present this is full of weed and rubbish. |
The canal becomes wide as it leaves the area of the main road and heads towards Carreghofa. |
Overgrown trees block the channel as we approach Walls Bridge. The towpath is in good condition and provides a pleasant walk. |
The next blockage. Just before Walls Bridge the road which originally passed over the bridge now passes over a flat bridge that completely blocks the canal. |
Modern housing with gardens down to the water's edge are a feature of this section. |
Leaving the residential area, the canal now heads out once more into the countryside. |
Over the Wern Aqueduct. The line used to run from Blodwell and Nantmawr with a later link for the Llanfyllin branch. |
Past the aqueduct, looking back across the canal towards Llanymynech Hill. |
Through the last bridge before Carreghofa we come to a fallen tree completely blocking the canal . |
View from the top of the bridge looking at Carreghofa. |
