The position of chief in plains indian bands and tribes was a very complex one.
In its simplest form a group of individuals ,often members of the same family would follow one man who they respected. Although chiefs were usually successful warriors , honesty and the ability to settle disputes between followers were the most important aspects of the leadership. If a chief was not satisfactory he lost his authority and people would not follow him. They would drift away and join other bands of the same tribe.
Thus chiefs tended to be older men who were respected for the council and experience they could afford the band.
