The Kiowa and Plains Apache were driven south from the area of the Black Hills by the the Lakota. They settled south of the Arkansas and after some initial hostility made a lasting peace with the various bands of Comanche. This alliance lasted up to the reservation period and presented a formidable barrier to European and American inroads into the southern plains.

At around the time the Kiowa inhabited the Black Hills they enjoyed the freindship of the Crows and although they moved many hundreds of miles apart the two tribes regularly made the often hazardous journey to visit and trade. This friendship continues to the present day.

The Lakota were the strongest grouping on the northern plains and often raided other neighbouring tribes. They waged a relentless war on all the Pawnee bands who although numerous, suffered greatly from thier semi sedentary lifestyle and the need to make two buffalo hunts out onto the plains each year.

Although the Assininboine were of Souian stock and spoke a similar language to the Lakota when they became caught up in the Lakota- Cree war they chose to side with the Cree. The two allies fought many of the other northern tribes and often intermarried.

Until the arrival of the Comanche the sothern plains were dominated by the apaches. But like the Pawnees farther north the Apaches suffered from their semi sedentary lifestyle in that enemies new exactly where to find the rancherias at the planting times. As the Comanches became more numerous they raided the Apache until the latter was driven west.

It is unclear how long the Arapaho lived on the Plains. Some historians believe they accompanied the Cheyenne in their journey from the woodlands while others think they may be amongst the oldest inhabitants of the region. It is known that the Cheyenne - Arapaho alliance was one of the strongest in inter tribal politics.

Apart from one short lived truce the Cheyenne- Crow war lasted for over eighty years and peace was only made in the reservation period.

The Gros Ventre split from the Arapaho in the eighteenth century but were a relatively small tribe surrounded by more powerfull neighbours. They made a strategic peace with the Blackfeet confederation and thus joined them in wars against the Shoshone and Flatheads.

The Crow had split from the Hidatsa in the 17th century and had moved far to the west. Each year they made the dangerous journey to the Missouri to trade with their relations.

The Arapaho hunted in the southern wyoming plains, right up to the rockies. The Shoshone had probaly controlled this area in the past and often ventured down from the Wind river basin. The tribes were soon in conflict amd raided each other on a regular basis.
