Don Powell,
born in Graigwen and brought up in Cilfynydd, was educated at Cilfynydd Junior School and
Pontypridd Grammar School. For part of the Second World War he was a booking and enquiry
clerk at the GWR station in Pontypridd, and later served in the Royal Air Force. He was
employed at one time as a central production control planner at Brown Lenox Chainworks and
later in administration and as a senior projects engineer with international companies in
the aerospace industry, based in London, Berkshire and the United States. He was drawn
irresistibly home again to Wales in the 1970s, working in administrative posts. He is the
author of 'Pontypridd at War, 1939-45' (The Second World War at Home) and has written
booklets on local history and memory lane, published a number of short stories, and
contributed articles to several newspapers and magazines. He now lives at Dynea,
Rhydyfelin, with his wife Barbara. They have been married for 51 years and have a daughter
Susan, sons Steve and Graham, and granddaughters Judith and Victoria.
