Abaddon :- Lord of the Hellborn, known in the world before the fall as Laurence Welby. Former husband to Ruth.
Achnazzar :- High Priest of the Hellborn. Answers directly to Abaddon. Dies on Walpurnacht (a holy day to the Hellborn where the devil walks among his children.)
Jon Shannow :- The Jerusalem Man. Feared as a Brigand Slayer, thought to be insane he deals with the ungodly and evil men in the swiftest way possible "…..You will not at any time, cross my path, for I will cut you down as deadwood from the Tree of Life. Go collect your dead." Often quoting from the bible as he goes into battle. Shannow is also the anti-hero of the book. Searching for Jerusalem.
Donna Taybard :- Shannow's love interest in this book. She has a talent for "seeing those close to her" this is thought to be due to the Daniel Stone that her father Prester John brought with him from "the Arc." She played with it often as a child and part of its power was thought to have come from there. Donna has a son called Eric who dies as the other pilgrims are massacred at Avalon.
Fletcher :- Killer of Prester John, Donna's father and her husband Tomas. Leader of the Committee in Rivervale also works as an agent for the Hellborn.
Stefan Janus :- Initially a friend to Donna Taybard, boyfriend to Susan McGraven. Takes over as leader and military strategist for Saddlers Trail when Daniel Cade withdraws the people further into the mountains.
Con Griffin :- Wagon Leader and lover to Donna when Shannow is thought to have died battling the Carns. One of two survivors of the massacre of Avalon. Goes into the Hellborn City along with Jacob Madden and Batik to rescue Donna from the Hellborn sacrifice.
Carns :- The Carns are the cannibals from the Plague Lands they are painted Blue and Yellow with sharp point filed teeth. They are wiped out when they unite with the Corn people to attack the Hellborn.
Corn People :- Karitas' tribe thought to have evolved from the Eskimo's. A peace loving people who would offer to share what they had with the Hellborn. They are wiped out when they unite with the Carn people to attack the Hellborn.
Karitas :- One of the worlds survivors from the fall. Thought to be a god by the Corn People due to his extremely long life. Originally a Guardian he sees the errors of his way and becomes a peace loving man. Also brought the secrets of gun design to the guardians and in turn to the Hellborn via Sarento's orders.
Selah :- One of the corn people, survives the massacre which killed the rest of his people and travels with Shannow until they reach sanctuary. Here he feels welcome and leaves Shannow and Batik and then joins Ruth's community.
Ruth :- Another of the old worlds survivors, believes that non use of force is preferable, teaches of love. Also happens to be Abaddons Wife back when he was Laurence Welby.
Batik :- Ex-Hellborn Warrior who rebels against the establishment when his sister is selected for sacrifice, he sides with Shannow against the Hellborn after his rescue from Castlemine.
Zedeki :- Hellborn General who led the massacre of Avalon. Dies when Griffin kills him in Batiks Sisters house during Donna's rescue.
Jacob Madden :- Con Griffin's friend also a survivor of the massacre of Avalon. Having lost his family he swears to kill the Hellborn and the two ride off to seek revenge.
Samuel Archer :- A guardian, he dies when he refuses to work in Castlemine's mines when he is beaten to death. Has a wife called Azmiga Archer who appears in the two other Shannow books. Also has a sipstrassi stone and has a fascination with Balacris one of the cities of Atlantis.
Daniel Cade :- Brigand leader turned into a prophet during the fight against the Hellborn. Also is Shannow's older brother.
Gambion :- Friend and Deputy leader to Cade. It is Gambion who is originally asked to lead the defence of Saddlers Trail but bows down to Janus plans.
Pendarric :- Atlantian king who brought death to his own people when he introduced the Bloodstone to them. Appears to Shannow in a dream telling him that he is Rolynd (a state of being that has a sixth sense) Also appears to others in the Novel such as Ruth and makes appearances in nearly every other Stones of Power novels.
Ridder ;- Pastor and leader to Castlemine. It is his laws that make Batik and Archer work in the silver mine. It is to Ridder that Shannow takes the battle first to locate his friends.
Sarento :- Leader of the Guardians and the power behind the hellborn. It was he who gave Abaddon the stones with which to begin his nation. It is also Sarento who causes the death of his own people when he gets the "Arc" to sail its original maiden voyage using the Motherstone. Due to his death he cannot stop the ships calamity being re-enacted by the stone.
