Purton Cricket Club
The access to the ground and the facilities have been further improved by the parish council replacing the old stiles by kissing gates and by Mike Canter and Dave Bisset donating and positioning seats around the boundary edge. To keep the ground looking attractive and fit for cricket needs many machines to be kept in good working order. We are very grateful to many local people who offer their services free or at rates well below market prices. Amongst those to whom we offer our thanks are Henry Fimmers, Paul Young, Paul James, Chris Compton and Colin Giles.
At this time of year we are also very much indebted to our many vice presidents for the donations to club funds. On the theme of support I was very pleased to see so many people watching the recent game against Nationwide only to realise that most of the crowd was supporting our opponents. Why not bring a picnic on a pleasant afternoon and support our teams.
The coaching sessions on Friday evenings continue to be well attended and successful. In our first two competitive matches the U13s beat Swindon in a close finish and the U15s suffered a heavy defeat at Westbury. The first team, in spite of a good win against Nationwide, is finding it difficult to win close games and we are losing by small margins. The second team having beaten United Churches lost their next two matches again by small margins.
Our Swindon Evening League team is sweeping all before it – played three, won three! We have recently spent a great deal of money on purchasing wicket covers and maintaining our machinery. The club’s summer raffle is aiming to raise £1000 to recoup some of this outlay. If anyone can donate a prize, sell or buy tickets we shall be more than pleased to hear from them.
