Robin Byers comes from a well known engineering family in and around Carlisle. It`s called having a pedigree! He owns R.S. Byers engineering, specialising in large electric motor repair, precision engineering, fabrication, and the manufacture of industrial process machinery and also large machines for peat production, illustrated by the above machine. These are purchased from Canada, stretched and fitted with track drives in place of the wheels. He has also built narrow-gauge railway engines and trucks for peat-moss installation. Other past endevours have included model steam engineering and power boats. He has a grown-up family, now replaced with no less than five Newfoundland dogs. I think the same philosophy applies with the Merlin engines, if you`re gonna have one, have a biggun! |

Peter Grieve also has an engineering background, his father having been involved in safety engineering at nuclear installations around the UK. He has worked primarily as a precision engineer, but also in manufacturing heavy machinery, and more recently, in maintenance engineering. He has also worked for himself manufacturing a wide range of precision parts, particulary notable being the manufacture from scratch of two autogyros (see above, looking rather wind swept!) one of which has been flying for over a year. He has also competed in tractor-pulling competitions (big aero engines again!), stock car racing, and has been involved in the warbird scene since 1988. All this has been acheived whilst bringing up a family! |

Peter is also an accomplished technical illustrator / author, but has not taken on any commissions in recent years due to time constraints. Unfortunately, the days when images such as that above, commissioned for the WW2 crew, were produced by hand are very much numbered as computers take over the task. |
