As the local authority moves towards healthy lifestyles
and developing a fitness education programme for school students, the
realisation was
"could this be something that the Pilmeny Youth Centre could tap into?"
"Could we offer a viable alternative to the programmes developed by the
local authority?"
"Could we offer a unique sporting and social experience for local
youngsters’?"
We all know that in order to achieve an active lifestyle, children should
participate in at least one hour of moderate physical activity on most days
of the week.
This hour could involve a brisk walk to school, activity in the playground
and involvement in an after-school or evening club as part of a local
Healthy Living campaign. As a community resource the Pilmeny Youth Centre
has identified the need to meet the "challenge" of
promoting healthy living for local young people.
STAGE
1
The first stage of this challenge was to initiate a youth centre sports club
that will compliment, the current
success of the centre's youth work provision. The sporting section will
promote a greater awareness of the health benefits of
sport related exercise.
To implement a
coaching support systems and to engage non-sporting young people within a
framework based on, learning,
social interaction and recreational development. Fundamental to the planning
and success of this initiative will be the unique recreational
development and programming of the taster and activity sessions'.
In order to deliver this initiative, the youth centre has teamed up with
local club Redpath Albion AFC &
Boys Club and in order to deliver this unique sporting
and social experience for local young people, the highly qualified, quality
coaching team from Redpath Albion, in partnership
with the Pilmeny Youth Centre have adopted the following aims:
AIMS
"To develop an
initial year round leisure and sports activity, helping to enhance fitness,
team-building and a sense of well-being.
Delivering sporting opportunities to local young people, especially
“tasters” in minority and alternative sports.
To develop a long term working partnership with local young people through
sport that will aid their enjoyment and social inclusion, and to
promote a greater awareness of the health benefits of sport related
exercise."
STAGE 2

The second stage, and one which was vital
to the sports club's development, was funding. Costs had to be met for
staffing, venue hire,
promotion and marketing, transport etc. It was with great delight that our
application to the Big Lottery Fund, "Awards for All" was
considered and agreed. Funds are now in place to facilitate the project for
twenty-six weeks throughout 2006.
STAGE 3
The third, and final stage, is the development of the programme and inviting
local young people to participate.
Contact can be made with the sports club manager, Bryan Maughan either via
the youth centre email or by contacting the
youth centre office, during office hours @ (0131) 554 0953
Preference will be give to young people residing in the Lorne/Pilrig area of
Leith
