Introduction

Glentoran Football Club has probably the most fascinating story in Irish League history. It is an intriguing tale of the uphill struggle of the proud East Belfast Club against all the odds.


We, in the next few chapters, will attempt to take you back in time through the corridors of history to re-live this extraordinary tale.


You will read of how this working class club battled through financial depression, two world wars, civil unrest and how it even took on the might of the German war machine.
Traditionally East Belfast people are strong resilient working class people brought up in the shadow of those mighty cranes of Belfast shipyard where many of them worked. Those same cranes still tower over the Oval today, watchfully, as a constant reminder of how the club has risen itself from near ruin to become the premier force in local soccer.
