Was It Really A Summer Slam? By Joe 'O'Connor

Drowning Pool's Bodies Hits and we are all ready to go for SummerSlam '01.
Seven Inter-Promotional matches with six titles on the line. Instead of doing play-by-play of every match I will run down the winners and losers of each match as well as my personal feelings of the match! I will also give each match a rating ranging from dud to a five star match!

Intercontinental Title Match: Edge Vs Lance Storm (C)
I really enjoy both guys technically ,especially Storm. The match was a typical face Vs heel match with Storm controlling most of the match and Edge mounting a successful comeback. A number of close falls leads to the interjection of Christian, who basically screwed up his run in. However Edge still succeeded and we have a NEW IC CHAMPION: Edge.  I really like this split angle between E & C whoever it seems to be growing stale and they need something to spice it up. Maybe Edge going heel?
Match Rating:***

Some backstage antics with Test, who seems real pissed. The "Vivian Garcia" hears about Stephanie's trash bag antics from Y2J.

Six Man Tag Team Match: Test & Dudley Boys Vs Spike & APA
This match was a time filler and had no real story line to it apart from Test joining the Alliance. So not many people including myself were into this match. Standard stuff leads to an interference from Shane O'Mac. Note: A cameraman actually shows Shane standing there with a chair, looks like someone screwed up in the truck. Poor little Spike was hurled over the top rope through a table which got a good pop! Shane nails Bradshaw with a chair as Test gets the 1-2-3! WINNERS: Test and Dudley's.
Match Rating:**

Christian still seems jealous and even Grandma Enda won't talk to him! "Stupid Cell Phones!" Stasiak complains that his tights are bad luck to Debra who doesn't seem bothered by the Mecca's troubles!

WWF Light Heavyweight and wCw Cruiser weight Title Vs Title Match: Tajiri Vs X-Pac
You just gotta love both these guys. Tajiri just rules and X-Pac ain't so bad either. I never got the "X-Pac Sucks" chants. Loads of high flying stuff and submissions. As JR says these guys really go at it! "All offence!" The big monster Albert comes out and tries to interfere only to get some Red Mist for his troubles. Tajiri is distracted which leads to a low blow and the X-Factor WINNER: X-Pac
Match Rating***

When are we gonna see X-Pac Vs Justin Credible? Soon I hope!

Over at WWF New York Perry Saturn pleads for any info on his beloved Moppy! He even has her on milk cartons! "Your Welcome" Stephanie is pumping up the Man Beast. Will he succeed?

Rhyno w/ Steph Vs Chris "Y2J" Jericho
Quick vid recap of the feud! Man Steph looks hot! You gotta love implants, HEHE! Good match with Rhyno getting most of the early advantage. Stephanie slaps and teases Y2J on the outside. Jericho however mounts a come back but screws up a top rope drop-kick! JR:"He must have something on those shoes" What? Soap? He hits a second rope drop-kick, but Steph is distracting the ref which leads to a lip-lock on the Billion Dollar Princess! Jericho screws up a lionsault and Rhyno goes for the GORE, GORE, GORE. However Y2J moves out the way and locks in the Walls for the submission. A lot of people said something was wrong with the tightness of the ropes! But it could be just a little concussion from the Ayatollah! WINNER: Y2J
Match Rating: ***1/2

Rock and Mr.Regal discuss Rocks match, Sean Stasiak tries to jump the Rock but fails and runs right into the wall! I'm really starting to love this Stasiak gimmick! What a goon.

WWF Hardcore Title Ladder Match: Rob Van Dam Vs Jeff Hardy (C)
Spotfest anyone? With these two guys you can't expect anything else. You talk about high risk these two guys take it to the extreme! This was one of my favourite matches of the night the highlights being the sunset flip of the ladder and RVD's failed attempt at the Van Daminator but he really had the testicular fortitude to try it. An awesome match and RVD eventually succeeds by beating the Hardy to the top of the ladder. NEW HARDCORE CHAMP: Rob Van Dam.
Match Rating****

JR hints that this could be the last ever ladder match. That's a shame but what a way to end it!

Backstage Booker T and Shane O'Mac discuss the Book's match. Shane gives Booker some book ends. "You didn't just give me that" Undertaker and Kane are on their way to the ring as we look back on this horrible stalker angle. Hopefully this will end tonight!

WWF Tag Team and wCw Tag Team Title Cage Match: Undertaker and Kane Vs DDP and Kanyon
Chant with me SQUASH, SQUASH, SQUASH! This is all this match is I think DDP and Kanyon mounted one offence! Kanyon did the smart thing and got the hell out of the cage when he was given the chance! This lead to the American Bad Ass beating the hell out of DDP while Kane basically just lied on the top rope! The only good thing about this match was the beginning when DDP didn't really know when to come out! If you have SummerSlam on tape go back and you can see him hovering around while Kanyon walks out! NEW WWF AND wCw CHAMPS: Undertaker and Kane.
Match Rating : Dud. Oh yeah, Who Better Than Kanyon?

Rock tells a medic that he is fine and ready for Booker T! Sean Stasiak again tries to hit the Rock but once again makes an ass of himself. Backstage both groups get pumped for the next match. We go to a recap of Austin turning on Team WWF and joining the alliance! What?

WWF Championship: Kurt Angle Vs Stone Cold Steve Austin (C)
This was without a doubt THE MATCH OF THE NIGHT if not the year so far. It was a brilliant story both in and out of the ring. Kurt Angle is without doubt the most promising guy and will I'm sure main event for years to come! The match ended in a weird way and I though it could of been done much better! Anyway I ain't a booker so what would I know? The match varied from in-ring stuff to all out brawling on the outside! Angle showed that he was one tough SOB by kicking out of about 4 Stunners and all this while bleeding heavily! And Austin showed that he is slowly going crazy.  What? Going crazy and paranoid in the process. Hebner gets knocked down by Austin, Angle hits a DDT as Mike Chioda runs down to count only to get stunned by Austin. Tim White is the next ref to try his luck with the rattlesnake but fails! ANGLE SLAM! Nick Patrick 1-2....The Bell is Rung! Patrick has DQ'ed Austin! ANGLE JUST GOT SCREWED! DAMN THAT NICK PATRICK! Angle locks in the ankle lock on Patrick to show his frustration! But you gotta remember Austin never beat Angle. Rematch for Unforgiven please. WINNER BY DQ: KURT ANGLE. But still WWF Champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Match Rating *****

Finally The Rock has come back to PPV!

wCw Championship: The Rock Vs Booker T (C)
"Can You Dig It Sucka?" My what a big belt Booker T has, will it soon be round the waist of the most electrifying man in sports entertainment? We will find out! But my money is on a shiny new belt for The Great One! Pretty standard match, both guys getting in their signature moves. The APA come to ringside and dispose of Shane O'Mac making it one on one. Book End on the Rock! Cover gets a two count! Rock fights back only for Shane to interfere again! Rock Bottom to Shane on the outside! Booker T gets the advantage again and hits the Axe Kick followed by the Spin-A-Roonie! This allows the Rock to get to his feet and hit the ROCK BOTTOM! 1-2-3! We have a new champ! The returning Rock gets his hands on the wCw belt as the WWF boys celebrate in the back! NEW wCw CHAMP: The Rock.

What a SummerSlam! All of the matches were good in their separate ways! But a Match of the Year candidate between Angle and Austin really stole the show! There should be a rematch between the two at Unforgiven, maybe in some sort of gimmick match! Many fans were annoyed that Rock Vs Booker T was on the top of the card but it sent the fans home happy!

My favourite Summerslam was 98 but this one came close! Until Unforgiven this is Joe 'O' Connor signing off!
