CYMBIDIUMS

One of the most important factors for the growing and flowering of this orchid type is that the night temperature during spike development should fall below 15 c therefore a position where the plant is out of direct sunlight would be ideal.

Height:

Large cymbidiums with flower spike, up to 3ft (90cm)
Miniature cymbidiums with flower spike, up to 2ft (75cm)

Flowers:

Large cultivars usually flower from November - May, depending on the variety. Flowers can last up to 8-12 weeks. Miniature cultivars usually flower from October - May depending on the variety.
Flowers can last up to 6-8 weeks. The lasting quality of the flowers depends on temperature and variety. The flower spikes will need supporting as they develop. Cut down the spikes to around 2 inches when the flowers have faded.

Temperature:

Night 11.5 - 14c
Day 16 - 20c

Water:

Allow the compost to almost dry out between thorough waterings. Never stand in excess water.

Humidity:

Standing the plant on a pebble tray which is kept moist will create a micro climate around the plant, and assist with plant growth.

Feeding:

Fertiliser at half strength with 3 waterings, then water only the fourth time, to ensure any harmful salts are leached from the compost.

Summer care:

The plant must be placed in a greenhouse or out of doors from late June to the end of September as it needs the light, air and temperature differential if it is to produce flowers the following season. Care should be taken to 'harden' the plant to the outside conditions, particularly the high light. Place in semi-shaded position then gradually increase light levels.
