16/04/03-Ray On A Question Of Sport
Apparently Ray will be appearing in tonight’s FA Cup special of ‘A Question Of Sport’ Tonight (Friday) at 7.00pm BBC1.Thanks to Chiara for the tip off.

16/04/03-Ray Fit Fror The Final
Apologies for the slackness of the past few weeks. Ray is winning his battle to be fit for Saturday’s FA cup final. Ray has had an ankle problem that forced him off during the Sunderland game but Arsene Wenger has said: "Lauren, Oleg Luzhny and Ray Parlour have all recovered, and I have to make a decision about them on Friday. Some of them have only made one training session so I have to decide who I can gamble on."

25/04/03-Ray Knows Spurs Are Useless
Ray knows that it’s pointless to expect any favours from our hopeless North London neighbors-
“United don’t play until Sunday but to be honest I’m not expecting them to slip up against Tottenham,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column .“Spurs still have a sniff of Europe but United have been playing well lately and I cant see them not winning there.”

25/04/03-Ray’s Bolton Preview
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Saturday’s game at Bolton from his Islington Gazette Column -
“Bolton is going to be another tough game and we need to reproduce last season’s result when we went up there and were 2-0 up early on.
“But the Reebok is a very hard place to go and get a result at the moment. I watched their game against United last month and Bolton were very unlucky not to win it.
“With West Ham winning on Monday, Bolton know they are still not out of trouble. They’ll be desperate to take something out of the game on Saturday.”

25/04/03-Ray Gutted For Sol
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Sol Campbell’s sending of against Manchester United. Thais was written before Sol’s appeal was turned down by the F.A-
“It could be Sol Campbell’s last game of the season on Saturday and were gutted for him, ” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column .“The kind of incident that happened between and Ole Solakjaer last Wednesday happens all over the country every week and goes unpunished. Sol did catch him but I think it looked worse on TV.
“We haven’t given up hope though, his appeal is in and if it goes to an advisory panel then he might still have a chance.
“With or without Sol we are ready to battle all the way to the end of the title.”

25/04/03-Ray Honoured To Be Captain
Here’s what Ray had to say about being Captain in the game at Brough -
“I can’t say it wasn’t a big disappointment for me to not to be in the squad against Manchester United last week-but getting the captain’s arm band on Saturday certainly made up for it,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column.“I have skippered the side in Worthington Cup games pre-season friendlies before but never from the start in the Premiership and obviously it was a big honour for me.
“I know it was just for one match because Patrick Vieira , David Seaman and Martin Keown were all out on Saturday , but it is still pleasing for the boss to give me the nod.
“I really enjoyed the responsibility as well and I think it made me want to go out and put in a good display on the pitch.
“There is doubt that we felt disappointed not to beat United last week . We got our noses in front and it should have stayed that way, but we let our concentration slip. “But the important thing was to realise that drawing that game was not a disaster. Losing it would have been.
“We knew the Middlesbrough game was a massive one and we were all very pleased with the way we played up there.
“Once we got the goal we felt confident of winning and getting that second saved any nerves near the end.
“It also meant we kept ahead of United on the goal difference and although that is important we won’t be going into games thinking we need to win by three or four goals. If you do you won’t win at all.
“We are aware that goal difference could decide it but it’s three points that is of most importance –1-0 will do us on Saturday.”

24/04/03-Ray Parlour’s Arsenal Bury ‘Boro
Starting his first Premier League game with the Captain's armband, Ray Parlour took central stage for this tough on paper away match at Boro. Arsenal desperately needed the three points and only one other visiting team this season had managed to get them at the Riverside.
the captain and crew
Ray filled in for the injured Vieira and one must hope that Paddy himself along with every trainee on Arsenal's books was watching as the Southend Socrates gave a virtuoso performance from first minute to last. Ray earnt the likes of Pires, Henry and Wiltord the right to turn on the trickery with a display of tireless and ceaseless running, tackling, harrying and general fighting for the ball, the likes of which this reporter for one has never seen in over 10 years of Parlour watching.
Ray made a complete mockery of all those fickle deluded "fans" who thought we should offload him to soon to be Division One outfit West Ham for £3 million. £3 million ? That wouldn't buy his left leg. That kind of drive and determination cannot be bought. It's instilled in a player by him growing up within the club. Quite simply Ray knew we had to win and he made damn sure we did.
Cygan filled in admirably at the back for Keown, seeming to be untroubled by Boro's limp attack. It would appear that when the opposition have no pace he is more than capable of doing a job for us.
The goals were inevitable once Ray had taken on the mantle of Midfield General. Wiltord got the first with a classy finish after good work from Henry and Thierry grabbed the second through an unstoppable free kick.
So a clean sheet for once, (9th in 32 Premier League games and only our 3rd this year), and no change in the goal difference situation with The Forces of Darkness.
With another tricky away game coming up at Bolton you'd be a fool to discount the Barking Bebeto's chances of another start.
Ray Parlour: Unstoppable and Undroppable.
-- Report-Peter Krige

22/04/03-Captain Ray Not Worried About Man U
Ray was stand in Captain for Saturday’s 2-0 win at Middlesborough (report to come later). Afer the match Ray said that he was not worried about what Manchester United is doing -
"All we do is concentrate on our own game and winning our matches,” he said.
"We won't worry about what they might or might not be doing. We showed great spirit and resolve at Middlesbrough and that is what we are going to need between now and the end of the season."

22/04/03-Ray Defends Muppet Shock
Ray has shockingly spoken out in defence of Graham (the thing from Tring) Poll!!!
“After he sent me off last season against Newcastle you might think I would be the last person to defend Graham Poll, but I think Sunday showed just how hard a job being a referee can be,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette column.“The incident leading up to our goal when he ran into Michael Tonge is just the kind of think that happens all the time in football.
“It was one of those moments that can come up and it was hardly a vital area of the pitch where you would think he would should stop the game.
“The fact that 11 or 12 touches later we scored was just unfortunate for him and I am not sure what he could have done after that.
“Managers always have a go at the referees-players do it most of the time as well –but I think if a few of them put on the referee’s shirt they might realise how difficult it can be .
“We all make mistakes- sometimes as a player they can lead to a goal or sometimes it is just a misplaced pass that nobody will ever remember-but for refs it is a little bit harder to get away with.
“There is talk of banning referees for making mistakes but I think that would be a bit harsh and were would it all end? “

22/04/03-Title Decider-My Arse!
So this was the crunch match of the season according to Sky, but in truth most of us suspected it probably wouldn’t be. Ray wasn’t even on the bench due to his injury , Freddie on the right in his place.
Ferguson decided to change his tactics this time, instead of trying to kick lumps out of Arsenal , this time United actually tried to play football which seemed to work pretty well , especially when in the 24th minute Cheating big chinned diving horse faced greaser Ruud van Nistelrooy put United 1-0 up.
It took Arsenal a while to recover from going a goal down and to add to their worries Patrick Vieira had to go off as his Knee problem worsened. The first half ended still 1-0.
In the second half Arsenal soon equalised. In the 51st minute Pires crossed to Ashley Cole, who’s shot took a lucky deflection of Henry’s leg .Who says Tierry can’t score ugly goals?
The game opened up and Arsenal started to turn up the pressure. In the 63rd minute Gilberto passed to Henry who shot the ball past Barthez . He looked to be off side but the lines man didn’t flag and interestingly United players didn’t complain.
While Arsenal players were still patting themselves on the back, however, United took the kick off and Ryan went down the other end and scored. Now I’ve seen some amateurish defending from them recently but that really did take the biscuit!
Towards the end Sol Campbell was sent off for what looked to be a elbow in Solskjaer’s face. From where we were sitting it was obvious that he didn’t touch Solskjaer and that Ole Gunnar had obviously been taking lessons from the big Dutch Horse faced cheat . But to be fair on the linesman it did look bad from his position but now poor Sol will miss the title run in and the FA Cup final.
The game finished 2-2 and on the final whistle, Ferguson ran onto the pitch like he had one the Championship. He especially made a point of shaking the linesman’s hand in comical fashion. More Fergie mind games of course but perhaps he should bare in mind his own words - "Their triumphalism could come back to haunt them. In football, these things can often backfire on you"
The support was fantastic and made me think if it was like that all the time we wouldn’t be fighting United for the title now, we would be celebrating having won it.

16/04/03-Ray Injury Doubt
Apparently Ray is a slight doubt for tonight’s game against Manchester United. He has a hamstring problem.

14/04/03-Ray’s Man U(re) Preview
Here’s Ray’s views on Wednesday’s crunch match with Man U from his Islington Gazette column-
“Obviously next weeks game with Manchester United is a massive match, the title could be decided by it although we both have some tough matches to come.
“We have certainly had some good results at Old Trafford in the last few years but not so many at Highbury and its time to change all that. “Although we lost to them in the league back in December we had a great result up there in the Cup and we feel we can beat them again.
“United have had a big week with a trip to Real Madrid and now they have to go to Newcastle on Saturday looking to go clear at the top.
“We hope to have a couple of big players back for the United game. Martin Keown should be fit to return and he is important for us at the back.
“And Robert Pires should have a chance for that game too-in matches like these you want all your big players and Robert is certainly one of those.
“What ever happens on Wednesday there will still be a lot to do. We have to go to places like Boro and Bolton and they will not be easy places to go and win. “I think there’s still a few more twists to come yet.”

14/04/03- Razor Blade
razorblade
Ray put in an inspirational performance as The Gunners squeezed past Sheffield United to book their place in their third consecutive FA Cup Final.
With an eye on Wednesday’s crucial league game against Manchester United Wenger put out a changed Arsenal team, leaving Henry, Bergkamp and Gilberto on the bench. Martin Keown , David Seaman and Ashley Cole made a welcome return.
United did a good job of stopping Arsenal playing in their preferred style. This was never going to be a pretty game. Ray created the first chance of the game when his pass let in Jeffers but the Blades keeper John Curtis cleared it. sigh
There were very few chances until the 34th minute when Ljungberg scored the games only goal, the build up of which was somewhat controversial. Campbell fouled Allison close to the penalty area but the ref Graham Poll waved on apparently deciding that Allison had gone down too easily. As Allison continued to stay down Arsenal went forward but would have certainly lost the ball if Poll hadn’t body-checked Tonge, who was about to intercept the ball. You could argue that Poll should have stopped the game then to get Allison, who was still down, treated. Instead Ljungberg got to the ball and passed to Jeffers on the left of the box. Franny crossed the ball to Wiltord who’s shot rebounded to him of the post. His second shot was blocked but Freddie slid in to blast in into the net.
In the second half United’s main tactic seemed to be to injure Vieira which was a successful as Paddy hobbled of after 10 minutes to be replaced by Gilberto. The absence of the midfield dynamo gave the Blades some hope and they started applying pressure and for a while things were looking quite dicey. Wenger threw on Henry and Bergkamp and Arsenal began to dominate towards the end. Henry spurned a good chance when he was put through from a low Gilberto cross. Then in the dying minutes David Seaman pulled off what must be the save of the season when we scooped away Paul Peschisolido’s close range header.
Ray was superb, he battled and harried throughout the game, if he lost the ball he would do his damnedest to get it back again. Being at the wrong end at the ineptitude of Mr Poll few times you couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for The Blades, but hey, you’ve shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. We’re on our way to Cardiff for the Final against Southampton (who beat Watford 2-1).

10/04/03-Ray On Pennant
Here is what Ray had to say in his Islington Gazette Column about Jarmaine Pennant being sent home from England under 21’s last week-
“What happened with him getting sent home from the England camp last week was a real shame and hopefully he can learn from a mistake like that.
“I know as well as anyone that you make a few mistakes when you are young and it has changed even more these days.
“I know Jermaine is a great young player though and every player in the country would love to be at a club like Arsenal.
“It’s hard for him but I’m sure he will get his chance. He can put this incident behind him and concentrate on the future which I am sure will be big for him.”

10/04/03-Ray’s Blade Preview< BR> Here’s Ray’s thought on Sunday’s FA Cup Semi-Final with Sheffield United from his Islington Gazette Column-
“Anybody who is thinking that we only have to turn up against Sheffield United on Sunday has obviously forgotten when we played Wolves in the semi back in 1998.
“They weren’t even that close to the top of the First Division but gave us a really close game and in the end we were hanging on to win 1-0.
“There is just no such thing as an ‘easy’ semi-final, they are always tense matches and Sheffield United have no pressure on them at all. They have had a hard season and are almost certainly going to end up in the play-off’s so the cup is a bonus for them.
“It will be their cup final on Sunday. They will have great support out there and they know that if they can turn us over then they have a great chance of winning the FA Cup and getting into Europe too.
“But we want to get back to Cardiff too -I’ve been lucky enough to play in four FA Cup Finals and they are the greatest days of your career.
“People say that this competition isn’t what it used to be but to me it is still one of the best in the world-it starts with your local non-league team in August and goes right through to the big final in May.
“Just look what happened this season with Farnborough coming to Highbury and Dagenham & Redbridge doing so well-you just can’t beat the FA Cup.
“I’ve only lost one FA Cup semi-final and it’ll be my sixth on Sunday so hopefully I can keep that record going.”

07/04/03-They Have To Put Us Through It!
Arsenal dropped 2 important points as they drew 1-1 with Aston Villa at Villa Park. Ray started in a team that missed Robert Pires , Martin Keown and David Seaman to injury. Ashley Cole however was on the bench. Villa obviously wanted to hold Arsenal, playing a five man midfield but it didn’t help that Arsenal didn’t seem to have their usual spark.
The Gunners had very few shots in the first, Vieira hashed his shot at a open goal and Ljungberg lost his feet when a Henry pass gave him a clear scoring opportunity.
The breakthrough came after half time when Gilberto’s shot was parried by Enckelman and Freddie slid in to make it 1-0. In the 71st minute Villa had a corner, as the ball bounced about in box there was a scramble, Cygan failed to clear the ball and Kolo Toure desperately trying to clear the ball slammed it into his own net. Wiltord was bought on and then Jeffers (why he came on so late I’ll never know) but to no avail and it finished 1-1.
So now the gap with Man U is reduced to goal difference. Why is it that when ever we have an International week we loose momentum ????

04/04/03-Ray's Villa Preview
Here’s Rays thoughts on Saturdays game at Villa from his Islington Gazette Column -
“Villa have been a difficult side to work out in the last few season’s and this year their form has been up and down.
“There’s no doubt they have some good players but they just haven’t scored enough goals in the last couple of years and that has been their problem this season.
“Having said that they gave us a tough game at Highbury back in November when we needed a late penalty to get some breathing space and a 3-1 lead , and Villa Park is never an easy place to go.
“Winning there last season was a big result-we were holding on a bit at 1-0 when David Seaman made a great penalty save and Robert Pires scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-0.
“But they came back at us with a goal and we were hanging on at the end-it is going to be important to get the three points this time around.
“The fact that Manchester United play Liverpool before we kick off won’t bother us either.
“The TV guys are always saying that it puts this much or that much pressure on you but the way we look at the match is simple-we want to win it.
That is what we have been thinking all week and it won’t change weather United drop points against Liverpool or not .
“Obviously it would be nice if Liverpool could do us a favour but we know we have seven games left and if we win them all we will be Champions again, no matter what United do in their games.
“And of course we are not just talking about Manchester United here- Newcastle are only five points behind us and could still have a big say.
Bobby Robson has got them fired up and if they can beat United on a week Saturday they will be in with every chance knowing Fergie’s boys are playing at Highbury in the next game.”

04/04/03-Ray Fresh And Ready
In his Islington Gazette column Ray talks about the international break and preparing for Saturday’s game at Villa and the title push-
“With quite a few of the boys away it has been quieter than usual at the club this week but those of us who have stayed have had plenty of time to prepare for Saturday’s game at Villa.
“With some of the quad having played two games in five games and done a fair bit of travelling too it will be a bit decision as to who will be ready in time for Saturday.
“A lot of people think players that have been rested should get a look in but that’s not really the way it works here-even though some like myself wont have played for 11 days by the time Saturday comes around it doesn’t mean we’ll be straight into the side.
“But the boss will want to get the right mix and with quite a few on the treatment table I know I have a good chance of being involved at Villa.
“For us it has been a good break-we had a chance to work on a few things and at this time of the season that is important-the next six weeks will decide everything and we want to be as prepared as we can.”

02/04/03-New Message Board
The Site now has a message board where you can talk all things Ray, Arsenal or anything general. So come and join us the more the merrier!

02/04/03-Fooled You (not)
My sincerest apologies for the dreadful Aprils fools joke yesterday. I doubt anybody fell for it anyway, but I know the sight of Ray in a spurs shirt is a thoroughly distasteful vision. I am deeply ashamed.

01/04/03-Ray In Peterborough Win
Despite his imminent move to Spurs Ray was involved in a behind closed doors friendly against Peterborough United today. The main purpose of the game was used to get Ashley Cole and Oleg Luzhny back to full fitness but Kanu, Lauren, Dennis Bergkamp, Edu, Pascal Cygan and Guillaume Warmuz all played as well as Ray. Arsenal won 4-2 Ashley Cole score aswell as Kanu, Ryan Garry and Bergkamp.

01/04/03- Ray In Spurs Swap Shock
and if you believe that you will believe anything. LOL
It has been widely reported that Ray is defecting to White Hart Lane in the summer. The move involves a swap with Steven Carr. Spurs are desperate to replace Gus Poyet who is retiring at the end of the season and Simon Davis who is linked with a summer move to Manchester United. Arsenal on the other hand have been interested in Steven Carr for some time and see him as natural choice for the right back position.
Glen Hoddle has been a admirer of The Romford Pelé for a long time, giving him his first England cap.
In an interview with Sky Sports News Hoddle boasted "I'm delighted to once again have the opportunity to work with Ray. It speaks volumes for the ambition of this club to be able to secure the services of a player of Ray's calibre. I see him as the midfield hub the around which we can build a team able to challenge for major honours."

31/03/03-Blue Murder
Ray takes on Manu
Despite feeling they were favorites Chelsea were ‘done over’ by the Mighty Arse yet again.
Ray started joining Vieira, Eduuuuu and Pires in midfield. Wiltord and Jeffers started up front Henry and Bergkamp both on the bench. Chelsea strangely started with Zola and Jimmy Floyd Idontgivaf*ck up front and leaving Gudjohnsen on the bench
Chelsea started strongly but some good defending reduced them to very few chances . In the 24th minute Wiltord ran towards goals and slipped the ball to Vieira coming in on the right . Paddy crossed the ball towards goals and the incoming, Wiltord and Jeffers but John Terry desperately lunged it past Cudicini and into the net.
Taylor then tipped a Jimmy Floyd free kick over the bar. In the 33rd minite Arsenal made it 2-0. Vieira strode out of midfield , laying the ball beautifully for Wiltord to slot it past Cudicini.
Lauren Is Mobbed
2-0 up at half time and after the break Chelsea did turn up the pressure but Arsenal defended very well (including Cygan!). Eidur Gudjohnsen was bought on and when Jimmy Flyed made a mean of a Cygan challenge the hapless Frenchman was give a second yellow and was off. Wenger’s reply was to send Henry and Ljungberg on. Down to 10 men Arsenal still managed to keep the Blue horde at bay but when Chelsea was awarded a free kick in the 79th minute Terry headed in. It could have been, as a certain old Scots soak would say ‘squeaky bottom time’ ,but three minutes later Lauren cut inside and scored from the edge on the box. As the players celebrated missiles rained down and Henry was cut of the side of his head by what looked like a cigarette lighter.
Vieira was superb and the way he has played this season has proved he is worthy of Tony Adam’s arm band. Ray was solid as well and did his cause of getting his regular place back no harm. Cygan had one of his best games and it was sad that in finished for him on a low point.
So for the third year in a row Chelsea have gone out of the Cup too us. They must really hate us. With the behaviour of some of their so called ‘supporters’, the feelings mutual though.

29/03/03-Ray Happy about Frannys England Call Up
Here is what Ray had to say about this weeks internationals in his Islington Gazette column-
“With no games this weekend all eyes will be on the international scene and it is a big week for England.
Although Liechtenstein should be no problem on Saturday the Turkey game is going to be although one and Sven Goran Eriksson will want all his player available for that one.
“It’s great to see Franny Jeffers make the full squad and it just goes to show how quickly things can happen for a player at a club like Arsenal.
“Once you make it here you are noticed straight away and Eriksson obviously likes what he sees in Franny to want him in the squad.
“It is always strange for those left behind in these weeks , but we know it could be a valuable spell when we can get some players back.
Ashley Cole is hoping to get involved again soon and Martin Keown and David Seaman are both being treated for injuries so it will be buisier than usuall at London Colney in an international week.”

29/03/03-Ray’s Everton Review
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on last Sundays win against Everton from his Islington Gazette column-
“We knew just how vital it was it was to win on Sunday having gone out of Europe last week so every body was relieved to get the three points against Everton.
“The fact that Manchester United had replaced us at the top the day before also put a little bit of added pressure on us but it is nothing we are not used to, and after a tough week it was a good performance from us to get the win.
“We were all pleased for Pascal Cygan to get his first goal for the club as he has had to take a lot of stick in recent weeks, especially up at Blackburn where to be honest the whole team under performed on the day.
“Pascal has not played that much Premiership football and it takes time to adapt as we have seen before-Martin Keown’s boots are big ones to fill and we all know that.
You could see why Everton have done so well this season on Sunday-they work so hard for each other and in Wayne Rooney they have a player who is always capable of getting a goal out of nowhere.
“We did well to get our noses in front again after he scored and although we had to hang on a bit at the end it was so vital that we did.
“For me personally it was good to get on the pitch for the last 25 minutes and nice to get a great ovation from the fans too.
AS I have said before this is a hard side to get into and all I can really do is try my hardest when I am given the chance and try make it impossible for the boss to leave me out.”

29/03/03-Wayne Can’t Roon Gunners Title Chase
Ray Parlour turned in a virtuoso performance as a second half substitute in the Arsenal's hard fought but deserved victory over an ever improving Everton.
Starting with the usual team, although Cygan played for Keown, Ljungberg for Wiltord and Gio VB still deputising for Ashley Cole the Gunners looked to put the disappointment of their Champions League exit behind them and regain the top spot temporarily held by the Forces of Darkness following their elbow inspired victory the previous day.
Pascal Cygan, looking like a man so short of confidence, one wouldn't be surprised to see him wearing brown trousers, made a hash of an extremely routine clearance after barely 5 minutes. The signs were not looking too good, although coming forward Arsenal were full of determination. On 8 minutes they won a corner on the left which Henry swung into the six yard box and rising majestically like a rabbit caught in headlights was none other than Cyagn to powerfully head home. Fans and players erupted as the bald headed one was mobbed by his team mates.
Suddenly the Reds were in complete control. Cygan was enjoying himself doing the simple things well, (surely what defending is all about ?), Gio was playing like a man possessed, Vieira, despite constant fouling from Gravesen was bossing the midfield as only he can and Bergkamp was everywhere, chasing and harrying the Everton defence.
The Toffeemen opted for a 9 men behind the ball strategy for the remainder of the half, so despite some fine approach play and the fact that they had Arsenal reject and ball puncher extraordinaire, Richard Wright, in goal, The Gunners failed to add to their lead.
Everton emerged for the second half with far more purpose, and young offender Wayne Rooney, who had been anonymous up to that point, suddenly began putting himself about. Hesitancy by Cygan well outside the box allowed the pint-sized scouser to drive into the area and lash a shot past Stuart Taylor and into the net.
Highbury's nerves jangled and you could almost hear Fergie wittering on about panic stations at Arsenal - (Yeah right). Hesitancy by both Gio and Cygan again nearly gifted Rooney an identical second but he shot poorly wide.
On 64 minutes persistence by Bergkamp chasing an Henry nod on caused panic in Everton's 6 yard box and Vieira was on hand to drive home. 2 -1 and the Gunners never looked back. Ray came on minutes later to a rapturous reception and got stuck in straight away. An audacious scissor kick, straight off the sand of the Copa Cabana, nearly came off for him and a fantastic run the length of the pitch and hold the ball up in the corner was executed in fine style to a standing ovation. Even though we are fed on Caviar and Champagne at The Home of Football we still appreciate the simple things in a game of football.
Everton manager Moyes brought on serial assaulter Duncan Ferguson but persistent fouling cunningly disguised by Cygan limited his impact.
The match finished 2 -1 and Arsenal regained their rightful place at the top of the Premiership pile.
Reports from Reuters meanwhile suggest that a cloud of noxious gas was sighted and a squeaking noise heard around Alderley Edge at about 6 pm on Sunday night, as well as the unusual sound of a drunk Scotsman choking on his own soundbite.

29/03/03-Things Back To Normal?
Sorry that the site has not been updated for a while. Our hosts Tripod have been doing some ‘essential work’ to improve things apparently which usually means thing don’t work half as well anymore. Fingers crossed though.

20/03/03-Ray Hits Back At Incompetent Hacks
Ray has hit back at reports that he is unhappy and wants more games-
“There have been rumours this week saying that I am getting depressed at not playing and that I am demanding talks with the manager but I don’t know where that story came from,”Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column. “I did not do that interview at all and I know full well that it is a big squad here at Arsenal and I’m happy to fight for my place.
“It was a lot of rubbish in the ‘News of the World’ on Sunday .
“We are all in it together and the manager knows that I would not say that.
“I will just work hard and keep playing and hope the manager picks me.”

20/03/03-It Will Be A Sticky Game Against Toffees
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Sundays must win games against Everton from his Islington Gazette column-
“On Sunday we face Everton at Highbury and it is a must win game for us. We did not go to Ewood Park thinking we would get beat but things did not work out for us and that happens now and again.
“Victory against Everton is essential, especially after we lost at Blackburn at the weekend because Manchester United are right back in it, so we have to be looking at trying to win all of our last eight matches now.
“We do not pay any attention to those claims in the papers that we are over confident, We have a job to do and that is the only thing players can do.
“Everton will be a very tough game for us. Every team who comes to Highbury now is playing for something and Everton are looking for a Champions League place.
“I can see the match being a very difficult and cagey game.
“Patrick Vieira will be fit for Sunday, he is getting better by the day. “Sol Campbell should also be fit and that is more good news.”

20/03/03-Out On Their Arse
Ray didn’t play as Arsenal were dumped out of the Champions League by a 2-1 defeat in Valencia.
Wenger chose to play Kolo Toure at Left back, Sol Campell was rushed back to partner Cygan , Vieira returned to the Midfield.
Arsenal started brightly and Henry , Wiltord and Pires all had good chances . But in the 34th minute John Carew made it 1-0. After the break Henry equalised from a through ball from Pires . Seeing as we only needed a draw to qualify things were looking hopeful but then Carew struck again, heading in from a cross. Arsenal replied by trying to play the long ball, which has never worked for them in Europe or anywhere else for that matter. This suited Valencia very nicely and when they got the ball they made sure they kept it for as long as possible.
Jeffers and Kanu were bought on towards the end to no avail. Pires went down in the box but the ref booked him for diving.
So ends another disappointing European campaign. A Campaign that promised so much but produced ...well just a sour taste as per usual. Lets hope at least it gives them the kick up the arse they need to finish the League in style.

19/03/03- An Injury To Far
sigh
The less I say about this one the better really. A shambles from start to finish , arguably Arsenal’s worst performance of the season. It didn’t help that Cole , Campbell, Seaman and Vieira were all injured, Ray was partnered by Edu in the centre of midfield, Wenger choosing to rest Gilberto. Blackburn started brightly and just as Arsenal looked to be finding some momentum Keown pulled a hamstring while attempting to head in a free kick. Gilberto came on as a makeshift centre back to partner Cygan and at this point you could tell things were not going to go our way. Indeed 3 minuets later poor defending allowed Damien Duff to score from close range( sadly the move started when Ray was dispossessed by Flitcroft). Then after the break Tugay. made it 2-0. Friedel made some good saves but nothing like his heroics at Highbury, he didn’t have to, Arsenal forward were so limp. Henry Bergkamp and Pires all look knackered So our lead in the Premiership is down to 2 points. We have to go Valencia without Keown , Cole and Seaman and possibly Campbell and Vieira aswell! The thought of Stepanovs , Cygan Gio van Bronckhorst in defence sends shivers down my spine.

17/03/03- Ray-Give Me More Games
According to the News of the World, Ray has expressed a desire to play more games-
"It's hard to complain when the side are doing so well but I want to play every week," he was quoted as saying.
"You wait for your chance but it can become depressing and difficult.
"The injury problems haven't done me any favours but I feel sharp now and if things don't improve then, maybe, it would be time to talk to the boss.
"This is one of the problems of playing for one of the biggest clubs in Europe. The problem is that the manager has had a fairly settled side for most of the season, while I have been out injured, so it is difficult to force your way back in.
"I thought I did well against Manchester United in the FA Cup but I know the manager can't keep us all happy."
"I need a consistent run of games to start thinking about playing for England again."

14/03/03- Ray’s Blackburn Preview
Here’s Ray’s views on the Blackburn match in his Islington Gazette column-

“It’s been a bit difficult putting up with all the stories about us being over-confident in the last few weeks and all I can say is that if you are not confident going into big matches then you aren’t going to win them.
“Of course we believe that we are a great team and we will win things and the boss had installed that belief in us over the years.
“The important thing for us is to stay focused and nowhere more so than in the League where we know we have a very tough game up at Blackburn on Saturday.
“Coming in between two big European matches it is always going to be a difficult one and Graeme Souness has built a tidy little side up there.
“We won’t be taking them for granted though because it’s games like these that can win or loose the title.”

14/03/03- Ray On The Chelsea
Here’s Ray’s views on the Chelsea replay from his Islington Gazette column-
“Looking at our at our fixture list this week it is obvious that the last thing needed on Saturday was a draw.
“We were all disappointed not to have won on the day because we definitely had a few chances to kill them off before they came back.
“Chelsea knew that if they kept it tight they might be able to nick one in the last few minutes and that’s how it turned out.
“But we are still in the cup and we have every reason to be confident that we can win at Stamford Bridge at the end of the month .
The pitch at Stamford Bridge has been relaid and so we will be able to play football on the night-it’s going to be another great game to be involved in. At this stage of the competition you know the final is not far away though and everybody digs deep to try and get through. “A lot has been said about weather replays should still be around and that is something the FA will have to look at.
But for clubs like Chelsea and plenty of others who aren’t in Europe they are not a problem. “It’s just for us who are still in everything this year and I suppose we are paying the price of our success now.
“But we believe we have a squad big enough to deal with it –even if we have to play two games in three days we will be able to handle it.
“Having said that the Manager likes to make a few changes in attack and midfield but it important for the back four to be consistent and it will be a lot of games for them if we continue to be successful.”

14/03/03-Totti Gotti Senty Offi
After his exertions against Chelsea, Ray was not named in the starting 11 for the crunch Champions League tie with Roma at Highbury, Wenger opting for the experienced Vieira / Gilberto partnership in central midfield with Wiltord on the right. Sol was missing due to a strain and was replaced by the increasingly dodgy Cygan.
Arsenal started well as ever and had a couple of chances before in the twelfth minute Vieira rose highest in the six-yard box to power home a header from Gio's corner. Yes, that's right, we scored from a corner!
Meanwhile Totti, who if he hadn't become a professional footballer would surely have carved out a career as an Olympic diver, was indulging in a running battle with Keown. Someone had obviously forgotten to tell him that if you want to play a game of windup, Keown is not the person to do it with. There are few players who are better at, or enjoy more, a physical, niggling confrontation than Keown. Having already been caught a couple of times off the ball by Totti, Keown fell to the floor, tv pictures clearly showing the Italian's hand catching him in the face, right in front of the referee. Instant red card, (for intent since he looked round, raised his arm and ran straight at Martin). Cue pandemonium as the Roma players surrounded the referee and whined.
Reduced to 10 men and in a state of shock Roma were there for the taking. Unfortunately, whilst they dominated proceedings, Arsenal seemed to ease off and failed to add to the scoresheet. As half time approached a routine long ball evaded Cygan, Keown, Seaman, Gio, Lauren and just about everyone except, crucially, Cassano, who nipped in to round the keeper and score.
In the second half the Gunners came out the traps like Archway born sprinter Dwaine Chambers out the starting blocks and had a multitude of chances to kill off the Italians. Just about everyone blazed a shot over the bar and in truth their dodgy keeper was never really tested. Ljungberg and Franny replaced Bergkamp, who was superb and Wiltord who disappointed yet again. That said the abuse he received from some "supporters " was inexcusable and these people really do have short memories, (OT 2002 ?).
Arsenal pressed but failed to really create anything of note. The Highbury crowd grew increasingly frustrated with the flicks and tricks of our players when surely something more direct would have been more effective. It ended 1 - 1 and with results going our way at Ajax, a draw or win away at Valencia will guarantee the Gunners progress into the knockout phase.
Laughably, the Roma manager, Fabio Capello, complained that Keown had given "a performance straight from the cinema." So, an Italian football club Manager complaining about players faking injury to get others sent off. A pot and kettle were seen trading racial insults behind him as he spoke.

12/03/03-Tony Adams Calls For Parlour Grit
Tony Adams has urged manager Arsene Wenger to pick his Romford compatriot Ray for the home-grown grit and determination .
``If it was me I would certainly bring Ray Parlour in.'' Adams told the London Evening Standard: ``You need players with his grit and determination to win vital games and this is a time when Arsene will really earn his money as manager.''

12/03/03-Ray Testimonial News
As some of you might be aware this is Ray’s Testimonial year. Many maybe be wondering if a Testimonial match will be arranged for Arsenal’s current longest serving player. In the program for the Roma match Ray revealed the difficulties of organising a date for that match-
“I’ve been here a long time now and obviously it will be a great night for me. Myself and my Testimonial committee are hoping to approach the Club soon about a date at the end of the season. But at the moment there are so many games ahead for us that I don’t want to put pressure on the Manager, Mr Dein or anyone else by suggesting dates, although I’m sure we will sit down when the time’s right and look at possibilities .Looking at the fixtures list , lets hope we are involved in matches right till the end of May when there’s an important one at Old Trafford! But I’m sure we can find a date to play the game and once that’s sorted I can set my sights on who to try and get down here.”

11/03/03-Further Fixture Fun
Ray kept his starting place for the FA Cup match with Chelsea, stepping into an injury and suspension ravaged Arsenal side, missing Cole, Lauren and Vieira. The Boss clearly thought his intelligence and maturity, ( Ray turned 30 two days before), would be useful against the "Big Club who last won the League in 1955".
The Gunners were plainly still reminiscing about the thrashing handed out in the Final of the same competition last season, as John " yer names not down, yer not coming in" Terry snuk in at the far post to head home unchallenged after 3 minutes.
and the oscar goes to..
Usually this would have the effect of silencing an almost silent Highbury crowd, but not this time. The Gooners rose as one right around the ground and roared their team on. The players responded in fine style, completely dominating the visitors and creating chance after chance.
Henry hit a post and was pelted with coins by the no-necks from near the Kings Road. Ray went close with a glancing header and a rasping drive. The only worries were whether all that possession was going to result in a goal and why Gronkjaer was continually roasting stand-in left back Gio VB.
Worry number 1 seemed answered when Jeffers was brought down, clean through on goal. 38,000 waited for a red card which never came and to add insult to injury Cuducini then saved Henry's penalty, diving well to his right. Chelsea celebrated like they had just won the cup, the Gooners just got louder.
Finally the Gunners found the net, Henry tormented the visiting defence before cutting the ball back for Jeffers to gleefully smash home.
The Arsenal continued to press and could have added several more, such was their dominance. However the game looked to be heading to half time with the score at 1 - 1 when Henry decided it was time for a party piece. A long ball from Sol out of defence was beautifully controlled by the French Trickster right in front of the onrushing Cuducini. However before he could collect the ball Henry spun and flicked at the same time, leaving the Chelsea stopper flapping at air as he passed the ball into an open goal. Highbury erupted and you could see the Chelsea players cave in before your eyes.
Thunderbird puppet lookalike and Chelsea Manager, Ranieiri changed things around at half time, replacing Galen Zola with another midfielder, (Zenden). Chelsea created absolutely nothing for the next half hour as Arsenal indulged in the exhibition / piss take football which we love so much but wish they wouldn't do until we are at least 2 goals in front. Henry in particular seemed to be delighting in roasting the right back constantly. Unfortunately though despite a number of chances the Arsenal failed to score.
A double substitution of Pires and Wiltord for Jeffers and Ljungberg looked good at the time, but with Henry limping off 5 minutes later we were suddenly left with no focal point for our attacks and a lot of players who didn't really seem to know where they should be playing.
Perhaps sensing a chink in the holders armour, Chelsea pressed on and created a few chances themselves before scoring a goal which this Arsenal team would be too ashamed to claim. It ended 2 -2 and The Arsenal travel to the Stamford Bridge Hotel ready to finish the job.
Expect a rout.

11/03/03-Ray’s Roma Preview
“We know that the Roma game has become a must win match for us and that is exactly what we intent to do.
“We have been a little unlucky not to win at home in our last four matches in Europe but I don’t think we have forgotten how to win at Highbury or anything like that. “The way the group is shaping up I think we can beat the Italians then we will be in a very strong position.
“Of course ideally we don’t want to have to go to Valencia needing something from the game but if that turns out to be the case we would be confident of doing that.
“We are still unbeaten in this group at the moment and winning on Tuesday is vital now-we desperately want to make it through after going out this stage last year and three points against Roma should do it.”

10/03/03-United Must Feel Worthless
Here is Ray’s views on last Sunday’s Worthington Cup final where Manchester United lost 2-0 to Liverpool-
“The Worthington Cup might not have been top of their trophy list at the start of the season but I am sure the Manchester United players didn’t enjoy losing the final so Sunday.
“Cup Finals are great occasions for the fans and the players and loosing one is not an experience you don’t want very often-as we know only too well , Liverpool are a hard team to beat in Cardiff.
“Of course having been there for the last two FA Cup Finals we would love to make it three in Cardiff.”

07/03/03- Ray's Chelsea Preview
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Saturday’s FA Cup match against Chelsea from his Islington Gazette column-
“People seem to have forgotten just how close last year’s FA Cup final was I think we are in for a very tough game on Saturday.
“That game in Cardiff was on a knife-edge until we scored and it was a case of whoever got the first goal would win it.
“It was me who got it of course and I am just glad I enjoyed it at the time because (as everyone keeps telling me) it was the last one I scored-I like to save them up for the big games...!
“Chelsea have improved a lot this season and you only need to look at their FA Cup run for proof of that-they used to be a bit suspect away from home but they have won at some awkward places like Shrewsbury and Stoke so far.
“And there is no doubt for me that Gianfranco Zola is the best player they have had at the club-in fact it is fair to say he has been one of the best foreign players to come into the Premiership.
“Even at 36 he still looks very fit and has been a great professional throughout his time at Stamford Bridge.
“ As ever the midfield battle will be very important in a big London derby cup tie and we know all about what Manu Petit can do-but Frank Lampard has had a very good season too and who wins the midfield battle will probably win the game.
“Obviously I hope to be involved on Saturday after playing 90 minutes at the weekend although at the moment it’s difficult to know what side the manager will pick.
“We will all be training hard and tomorrow (Friday) will find out who is in the side-only after Saturday can we start focusing on Roma.”

07/03/03- Birthday Ray!
 Ray Cake
I don’t know if any one noticed but it’s very special day today. Thirty years ago today The Pelé of Romford entered the world. Hopefully he won’t be heading off to the Upton Park retirement home for over the hill Gunners quite yet though!
In yesterdays Islington Gazette, Ray said “I am 30 tomorrow and that is making me feel old –but the legs still seem to be working OK so fingers crossed I will be around a good while yet!”
Happy Birthday Ray. How about a Birthday goal tomorrow against Chelsea?

04/03/03- Red Sunday
 ray back in action
No ‘Black Sabbath’ for the Addicks as Arsenal cruised to a 2-0 victory at Highbury. Ray started, partnering Edu in the centre of midfield (Vieira serving a suspension) . Kolo Toure and Van Bronckhorst were replacement full backs for the suspended and injured Lauren and Cole. Freddie Ljungberg made a welcome start after being out for over two months and Jeffers partnered Henry up front.
Arsenal were well organised and determined not to make the same mistakes they have made against Charlton in the past. After 26 minutes Henry supplied a low ball into the penalty area that Jeffers tucked away. Charlton almost equalised within seconds as Bartlett's flicked header realeased Lisbie Seaman making a good diving save Ray had a shot from 25 years , remenisant of his FA Cup final goal against Chelsea but Kiely saved. Then just before half time Arsenal made it 2-0 . Henry then lost it a bit, kicking out at Scott Parker after a tackle. Super Bob
Thankfully Parker didn’t react or Thierry would surly have walked. Then Arsenal made it 2-0 with a typical counter attack from Pires to Henry who crossed into the box, Ljungberg hooked the ball on to the post and Super Bob headed home the rebound.
The in second half Arsenal should have made it more, Pires and Henry both having good chances. Kiely produced a superb block to deny substitute Wiltord (who came on for Freddie) , and Luke Young somehow stopped Jeffers from tapping in from a yard out. Ray had a great game along with Edu ensuring we didn’t really miss Vieira at all. We are now 8 points clear of the luckless Mancs who had to take that knowledge straight into the Worthington Cup final, which kicked of straight afterwards. They ended up runners up in that as well.

27/02/03-Ray- ‘It’s Difficult Being On The Bench’
In his Islington gazette column Ray talks about the frustration of spending a lot of time on the bench recently-
“Obviously I would rather be playing from the start than coming off the bench but it’s just something I have come to accept being in one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
“The manager has had a fairly settled side for most of the season while I was out injured and it’s very difficult to force you way back in.
“Along with the other players who have been on the bench a lot recently like Edu and Franny Jeffers, I thought I did well at Old Trafford in the FA Cup a fortnight ago when the boss rested a few players .
“But you can’t expect one good game to earn you a regular start in a siude like we have got at the moment. There are only 11 places in it and we’ve got about 25 great players fighting for them.
“The manager can’t keep us all happy so it’s our job to make sure when we do get the chance we show what we are worth.

27/02/03-Ray’s City Review
Here’s Ray thoughts on the Manchester City games from his Islington gazette column-
“When you are a player days like Saturday at Maine Road when you are 4-0 up away from home inside 20 minutes can’t happen enough!
“Everybody was expecting a really tough game up there after they ran us fairly close at Highbury earlier in the season , but it didn’t materialise.
“We just went for their throats straight from the off and their defending wasn’t up to it-we finished our chances well and five different goalscorers away from home after a big week in Europe is enough to keep any manager happy!
“With United dropping a couple of points it turned out to be a very good weekend for us and we know that if we can keep on winning games then nothing can stop us in the title race.
“The games are running out now-there are only 10 to go and every one you win gets you closer to the title .
“Results like Saturday’s can only give us more confidence and we know that it is down to our results-United dropping points is great but if we keep picking up three points nothing can stop us.
“Having said that we know United will never give up the chase-they will battle us all the way as they have before.”

27/02/03-Dam!
Ray came on as a sub late on as Ajax again managed to hold Arsenal to a draw this time in Amsterdam.
The Dutch Champions started the game cautiously, choosing to attempt to contain Arsenal rather than go at them . Arsenal started well ,Henry had a good shot saved by Ajax keeper in the 3rd minute. Gilberto and Wiltord both had chances. Ajax started to attack more, Zlatan making a couple of good chances. Dam
In 35th minute, Wiltord got the ball on the right side of the box and passed to the advancing Vieira but the keeper got to it just as Paddy was sliding in. Ashley Cole then had a good claim for a free kick on the edge of the box waved away by the referee. In the 37 minute Pires fouled De Jong on the edge of our box but Chivu's free-kick was headed of the goal-line by Cole. In the second half Ajax started to attack more and whenever Arsenal did attack they seemed to be broken down easily. Lauren then deflected a good shot from Zlatan over the bar. Henry then won a free kick from 30 yards out, it looked like it was just going over but the keeper got his fingers to it anyway but no corner was given.
The game was crying out for Ray and Jeffers and both were sent on in the 78th minute, Ray for Wiltord , Franny for Bergkamp . But it was too late for them to make too muchh of an influence on the game and it finished 0-0.
Credit to Ajax who rally surprised everyone in this group but Arsenal really should have done better in both games. Okay it’s not the end of the world as Roma beat Valencia 3-0 so the Gunners are joint top of the group with Ajax. Both 3 draws out of the last 3 games we are hardly setting Europe alight.

26/02/03-5 Go Mad In Manchester
I just Loove it
Arsenal took full advantage of Manchester United dropping 2 points with a 5-1 romp against Manchester City at Maine Road. The Gunners were 4-0 in the first 20 minutes even with Ray on the bench, Wenger choosing to play Wiltord on the right. Dennis Bergkamp put Arsenal ahead after 4 minutes when poor defending from Richard Dunne allowed Wiltord to thread the ball to The Dutchman in the box and he prodded it home. After 12 minutes it was 2-0 Henry approaching from the left-hand line passed to Pires who tapped it home. In the 16th minute Keown putted the ball up to Henry who got past Dunne (again ) and took it with his left foot controlled it beautifully and looped it over the keeper with the same foot. It was a beautiful bit of skill.
 It Loove it too
Cambel made it 4-0 after19 minutes, heading in Henry’s corner.
In the second half City were just playing for pride while Arsenal started to conserve energy for Wednesday’s trip tom Amsterdam. Fowler and Anelka had a few good chances to be foiled by some excellent keeping from Stuart Taylor. In the 55th minute Vieira ran clear and shot under Nash , 5-0.
10 minutes later ,Ray came on for Bergkamp as City kept pressing for some kind of consolation but Stuart Taylor was not going to concede easily. City did get a break through at the death when ‘Whineing –Horse’ Anelka scored with a close range tap in. It was a shame for the young keeper who pounded the ground angrily.
Great to see 5 goals all scored by different players. Arsenals are show real solidarity at the moment. 5 points clear at the top with a massively better goal difference. I Just Loove it.

22/02/03-Lets Re-Maine Focused
Here’s what Ray had to say about Saturday’s game at Manchester City in his column-
“We’ll be back in Manchester this weekend to take on City and with three Premiership points at stake this game is just as important to us (as Man United).
“Coming between two big European games it is important we don’t loose our focus and go to Maine Road with the right attitude, and get the right result.”

20/02/03-Ray On Bootgate
Here is Ray’s opinion on the Beckham football boot incident from his Islington Gazette Column-
“A lot has been said about what happened between David Beckham and Alex Ferguson at the weekend but we won’t go around thinking that will effect United’s title challenge.
“Although Arsene Wenger is very calm in the dressing room, there were certainly a few things lobbed about in George Graham’s day and every boss has their own style of management.
Fergie is well known to be a vocal manager and it has brought him a lot of success, but what happened on Saturday seems to out of the ordinary and I’m sure United won’t be happy about that.”

20/02/03-Ray's Man U Review
Here is what Raymond had to say about Saturday’s huge victory at Old Trafford, from hies Islington Gazette Column-
“The way we played at Old Trafford on Saturday shows what we are capable of and we know if we can keep our performance level that high we can be Champions again.
“I was saying last week how important the game was and there is no doubt it has given us confidence and belief that we can go on to achieve what we did last season-perhaps even more.
“The tackles were flying in early on but I think the referee did well to keep 22 players on the field-that is what people want to see and we saw up at Newcastle how playing against 10 men can make it a different game.
“We wanted revenge for four years ago and for the way we lost in December and I think we got it-the fans up there were leaving early and it’s not often you see that at Old Trafford.
“We also showed just how strong the squad is at Highbury these days and, as it was last season, that is going to prove vital in the coming weeks.
“The boss needs to know he can rely on whoever plays and that was the case on Saturday-Syvain Wiltord and Franny Jeffers were great up front and to say we didn’t miss Thierry Henry that much is certainly proof of that.
“If you look at games coming up like the match with Charlton a week on Sunday when we have a number of players out suspended it is so important that two or three players can come in and do what is necessary.
“Personally I enjoyed Saturday’s win almost as much as winning the title in May when the pressure was huge.
“We go into games against them believing we can beat them home or away and maybe a couple of years ago we didn’t quite have that belief.”

19/02/03-Gunners Highjacked By Ajax
A tired looking Arsenal continued their poor run of home Champions league results last night with another disappointing display. Against a makeshift and young Ajax side they could only draw, leaving the group wide open with three games left to play. Arsene decided to leave Ray on the bench for this one and started with Vieira and Gilberto in the centre with Wiltord and Pires out wide. Cygan came in for Boots Keown who picked up a knock at Old Trafford, (presumably when he was assaulted by Diving Horse). The Gunners had a perfect start with Wiltord rounding off a sweet move after 4 minutes to drill the ball home through the keeper. Unfortunately this wasn't the catalyst to rack up a cricket score and the visitors quickly, (and all too easily), rallied, equalising after 20 minutes following a slip by Ashley Cole. In truth Ash had a pretty torrid night, continually exposed as Pires went walkabout and guilty of some schoolboy errors. It transpires that he was carrying an injury and only played after a number of injections to his ankle.
Arsenal huffed and puffed their way through the rest of the match but nothing seemed to quite come off for them , although they were inclined to overelaborate at times. Ajax were disciplined, hardworking, organised and not short of technique and did an excellent job at frustrating us. Their keeper finally learnt to catch the ball with about 10 minutes left but in fairness our reluctance to shoot made his job a whole lot easier. Gilberto looked shattered, seemingly still carrying the effects of flying for 36 hours in the space of 3 days - surely time for a proper rest. Vieira was superb, Pires quiet and Henry continued his search for the perfect goal. Cygan and Sol both looked solid, this type of game being what the bald headed Frenchman was bought for. We desperately lacked the drive in the centre which the Romford Pele would have provided. Only Wenger knows why he didn't play him and we'll just have to trust the great mans judgment. One positive on the night was Wiltord's continued good form, following his fine goal at Old Trafford. He worked his socks off, constantly running at the defence and looked the most likely source to create a goal. Unfortunately few of his colleagues showed the same commitment to the Red and White cause and ultimately the crowd left disappointed.
In the cold light of day, a point is not so bad, remember this lot drew at Valencia too. Arsenal are still joint top with everything to play for.
Report- Peter Krige

17/02/03-Poor United Bullied By Arsenal
 Priceless
Ray returned to the right side of midfield. Gilberto was dropped (after a slow plane to China)for Edu and strangely Henry was on the bench and Bergkamp wasn't even in the squad with Tuesdays game. Jeffers and Wiltord played up front This was an extremely similar side that Wenger fielded at Old Trafford at the end of last season (Jeffers for Kanu and Pires for Freddie the only changes) so it would be silly to contest it. Man U played pretty much their full strength team.
United came out looking to unsettle Arsenal by trying to kick lumps out of them. Now this seems to be Ferguson’s recent tactic when facing the Champions, it worked in the last game at The Theatre Of Prawns but it didn't work at the end of last season and it didn't work here. First Scholes was booked for GBH on Vieira. Then greasy Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy renewed his friendship Martin Keown with a crazy lunge for which Ref Jeff Winter rightly book him. After only just receiving a yellow card you would think Ruud boy would keep his head down for a while but instead, Jimmy Hill features flies in with another reckless lunge on Lauren, luckily for him Winter did not see it or he would have certainly been heading down the tunnel for an early bath. Vieira was booked for protesting too much to the ref.

 Priceless
After an explosive first 10 minutes United decide to keep their heads down a bit. It all seemed a bit of dejavu when Ryan Giggs took advantage of a Keown miss timed his tackle. Seaman panicked and ran out only to be rounded by Giggs , who then went past Campbell as well. With a gaping goal facing him Giggley Wiggsey blasted over the net and produced one of the most memorable blunders in the history. It's funy how things even out after a time and we were thankfully spared another horrific bear chested celebration.
It was this moment that basically changed the game. Arsenal’s confidence grew and they started to control the game. Just after half an hour the break through came when Keane brought Vieira at the edge of the area. Edu took the free kick which deflected off David Beckham’s shoulder and past a helpless Barthez .
Arsenal finished the second half in complete control, passing the ball around and dictating the pace of the game, United rarely threatened.
After a half time under the hair dryer you would think United would have come out fighting but Arsenal were still running the show, Vieira commanding the midfield and putting Roy Keane to shame.
In the 52 minute, Edu ran into the Man U half and slipped a pass to Wiltord who skipped past Wes Brown in the United box sending Barthez the wrong way as he shot low into the other side of the net.
 Priceless
Henry came on 72 minute for Jeffers and his beautiful weighted pass unlocked the United defence for Wiltord to speed into the box. Luckily for United, Wes Brown made a last ditch tackle just as Sylvvan was about to pull the trigger. Frankly it was very close to being a penalty. Scholes got away lightly when , conceding a free kick petulantly kicked the ball into the soft parts between Lauren’s legs.
After the game Ferguson said that Arsenal players 'bullied the referee'. What game were you watching Ferguson? Recently his attempts at ‘ mind games’ are sounding like complete bollocks, when it comes to surrounding the referee with veins popping out of their foreheads Man Poo are the Kings. United got off lightly with van Nistelrooy and Scholes both lucky to still be on the pitch.
Fergie was apparently so distressed by Arsenal’s bully tactics that he kicked a football boot into Beckham’s eye( a reasonable behaviour than Arsenal’s I’m sure you will agree) .
Just found out it’s Chelsea in the next round. Go on Ray you can do it again!

14/02/03-Ray On Ajax
In his Islington Gazette column Ray looks forward to the re-start of the Champions League with home and away games with Ajax-
“The Champions League starts again on Tuesday and we all know to win against Ajax would put us through to the quarter finals.
But that will not be easy –they are a very good side and they have nothing to loose now they have got this far. We have to make sure that we get the right result at Highbury on Tuesday and then we can take a lot of confidence over to the match in Holland.
“The manager is going to have to use the full squad in the next few weeks , but we are all fit and raring to go-only Rami Shaaban is out and that is a healthy position to be in at this stage of the season.”

14/02/03- Ray's Man U Preview
Here’s Ray’s thought on Saturday’s massive FA Cup clash with Manchester United on Saturday-
“Although it is a cup game and a one off you can’t say that it won’t effect the title race-back in 99 when Ryan Giggs’ goal beat us at Villa Park it is fair to say the result changed the season .
“We could well have gone on to be champions again if we had won that game, bit I think United got a lot of belief out of beating us with 10 men that night and it carried them through to take the title by just a point from us in the end.
“We had our chances that night and it was an epic battle to be involved in-let’s just hope that this time it can be us who get through.
“It is always a huge game when we play up at Old Trafford and having won the title there under a lot of pressure last season we know we can do it again .
“We need to concentrate on making sure we get our passing game going which. didn’t really happen last time, and as I said earlier , clean sheets are what wins matches. We always fancy ourselves to score so we have to stop conceding at the other end as often as we have been.”

14/02/03-Ray On Franny
Here is what Romford Péle had to say about Fancis Jeffers’ call up to the England senior squad from his Islington Gazette column-
“We so many international players away this week it is a very worrying time to be a manager and the boss will just be hoping that everybody comes back unscathed this week.
“Obviously Franny Jeffers getting his first call up was brilliant for him and it just goes to show how tough it is to get into the team here at Arsenal.
“I think Franny will get a chance soon though and he just has to make sure he takes it when it comes along. He is still young and had plenty of time.”

13/02/03- Ray's Toon Review
Here's what Ray had to say about last Sunday's result in his Islington Gazette column-
“Although we would have settled for a point at Newcastle before the game there is no doubt we were a bit disappointed not to have won the game on Sunday.
“Like Liverpool we made plenty of chances in the first half to be leading by more than one goal , but at 1-0 the other team are always in it. “We don’t seen to have been keeping too many clean sheets recently and that is what cost us again on Sunday . “Newcastle settled for a point once they were down to 10 men and we couldn’t win it-it was a good point but three would have been so much better.
“United dropping points to city was a surprise and it just goes to show what an effect derby matches can have -United have only taken one point out six against City and the fact that we play so many derby matches in London always makes it harder for us in my opinion.”

12/02/03- Blobby Robson Whine
Arsene Wenger decided to stick with the central midfield pairing of Vieira and Gilberto for the top of the table clash at St. James' Park, leaving the Romford Pele to direct operations from the bench. Presumably his thinking was along the lines of keeping Ray fresh for the forthcoming FA Cup match at Old Trafford,(and a possible, late, England call up), especially since Gilberto will be unavailable due to Brazil's extremely crucial exhibition match on the other side of the World. Sylvain Wiltord was also again preferred to Raymundo on the right despite his increasingly erratic performances of late.
Arsenal started well, and quickly began to dominate on the pitch and silence the locals with a gutsy battling display. "Mr. Personality" Alan Shearer was up to his usual tricks of elbowing, barging and shirt pulling against both Sol and Boots Keown, neither being a battle he 's ever likely to win. Inevitably therefore he persisted in moaning to the ref as he came off worst again and again.
No surprises therefore to see him take his frustration out on Ashley with a studs up lunge. The "fair minded, educated, best in the world" Geordies all knew it was a superb challenge which Cole exaggerated, and therefore they abused him for the rest of the match.
me again
All of which mattered for nothing since Arsenal completely dominated and opened the scoring after about 35 minutes, an incisive move involving Bergkamp and Wiltord playing in Henry to round Given and slot into an empty net. In truth the Gunners could have been 2 up before the goal with a number of great chances either missed (Pires' point blank header somehow going over),or excellently saved, ( Given incredibly heading over his own bar after Bramble's foot directed the ball goalward).
The second half continued as the first ended with Arsenal creating chances, notably for Henry who really should have done better when controlling on the edge of the box. We were left to rue that missed chance as about 3 minutes later little Frenchman Lauren Robert picked up the ball 30 yards out and set off on a run. He evaded a couple of challenges and thanks to a lucky bounce the ball ended up on his stronger left leg with which he was able to curl the ball round the outstretched hand of Dave Seaman.
The Geordies found their voice and Arsenal were rocked back on their heels albeit briefly. Robert, still overly excited by his admittedly fine strike, lunged in late on Ralph and found his way into the referees note book.
This being a televised match involving the Champions, controversy in some form was inevitable and it duly arrived in the shape of a blocked Arsenal freekick. Bergkamp having been fouled by Robert, spotted Henry's run and attempted to play him in. Twice he went to pass and twice Robert stuck out his leg from a position less than 1 yard from the ball. On the third attempt Dennis actually did play the pass, around Robert, but the player stuck out his leg quite deliberately and prevented the ball from passing him. He then whacked it straight at Ralph, the ref having blown his whistle. Immediately, the Toon players knowing what was coming surrounded both the ref and Dennis, Bellamy and Shearer in particular aggressively accusing Dennis of deliberately kicking the ball at Robert to get him sent off. Bellamy looked ready to burst into tears, although he often does start crying if things don't go his way.
As Robert trudged off the pitch safe in the knowledge that he'd probably just cost his side any chance of winning the title, (as if they ever had any anyway!), "People's Favourite" Blobby Robson, ( I now refuse to call him Sir), shook his head at Bergkamp and mouthed the word "cheat" repeatedly.
In truth the game fizzled out after this, Newcastle content to defend deep and Arsenal suffering from their all to frequent inability to break down teams putting 10 men behind the ball.
Dennis was booed at his every touch and when he was substituted Robson again shook his head at him and called him a cheat.
So the game ended 1 - 1 and in retrospect a highly satisfying point at a ground where the Home team had won their last 11 matches. With The Forces of Darkness failing to win an easy home game, we preserved our three point lead at the top.
What's so disappointing is that, yet again, a rival manager has had a decision go against him and rather than questioning his own player or the referee, has decided to accuse an Arsenal player of cheating. This kind of muck sticks and it is becoming an all too familiar whine in the post match press conference. What makes it all the more galling is that Robson last season suggested that Arsenal needed to "learn how to lose graciously". A manager whom I for one had great respect for prior to this game has succeeded in making himself look like a total idiot and a hypocrite. It really is time that managers were held to account regarding their comments on opposition players after games, much as they are for referees.

12/02/03-Language Lessons From Raymond
In an interview in the latest Official Arsenal Magazine Ray reveals how he has been teaching the foreign players the Romford lingo -
“I think it’s important to have a laugh and a joke at times. When we walk out on the pitch we’re very serious, but you have to have a bit of humour as well.” Ray explains.
“I try and get the foreign players using a bit of Cockney rhyming slang and they all seem to enjoy having a go.
“Thierry Henry in particular will come out with phrases in the dressing room. His favourite at the moment is ‘beans on toast’ which means post, another good one is ‘bass guitar’ which is bar.
“Having a laugh and a joke can bring the squad together and help us get results . But we know we have to be serious when we walk out on the pitch.”

03/02/03- Super Bob Saves The Day
All the signs were there for a potential banana skin. Fulham’s former Gunner Luis Boa Morte was quoted in the press saying he believed his team got no better than a 10-1chance of defeating the champions. All the press were pointing out that Fulham had never beaten Arsenal and this was a absolutely certain 3 points. Hmm, so why was I not feeling so sure.
He can leap tallest buildings
Ray wasn’t even on the subs bench, Wenger instead choosing to start with Wiltord. I have to say I could see some sense in this as The Romford Pele had played for 90 minutes in the last two games after coming back from long lay off. Also at home to Fulham is a bit of a Gallic affair more suited for Sylvan (obviously).
Arsenal went one up after 17 minutes when Henry crossed into the box and Bobby Pires headed (yes headed) it into the net (bouncing off the ground on-route). Okay then, time for a right royal spannering for The Cottagers- well no, because 13 minutes later Steed Malbranque equalises with a brilliant volley. You could see almost see the players scratching their heads, “This wasn’t in the script”.
In the second half Fulham held on they seemed very contented with the idea of a point a Highbury. Perhaps they were a bit jaded from the Liverpool match but Arsenal couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock. The recent weather has taken its toll on the Highbury pitch so it was not the usual perfect surface for their beautiful carpet football. Wenger (who spent most of the second half flapping about like a headless chicken) decides to make some changes. Jeffers comes on for Wiltord, Gio for Gilberto and Kolo Toure comes on for Lauren. Franny instantly made an impression, first he had a scorching shot tipped over by keeper Miak Taylor then setting up Vieira but as we know Paddy’s only limitation is that he can’t hit an elephants ass with a double bass. In injury time Gio put Jeffers through on the left side of the box. The fox in the box clipped the ball across goal where Pires slid in the score his second and the match winner.
A huge sigh of relief breathed by all. Its nice to see the Jeffers is finally proving his worth, some of his contributions have been crucial in the last month or so. Pires is just awesome. He seems to have added a new dimension to his game, darting into the box in the vein of Freddie Ljungberg. Is there anything that that man can’t do? Super Bob.

01/02/03- February’s A Big Month For Us
Here’s Ray’s view on the coming month and Saturday’s home game against Fulham, from his Column-
“February is certainly shaping up to be a big month with the Champions League kicking off again and some big Premiership games as well.
“We have got ourselves into a good position and it is important we go into the month with a good win against Fulham on Saturday”
People underestimate how hard these games can be and we know we will have to be at our best to win again.

01/02/03- Ray's Farnborough Review
This is what Ray had to say about the Farnborough from his Islington Gazette column-
“I thought they played brilliantly on the day and were a credit to no-league clubs,” Ray said. “ They approached the game very professionally and that made sure we had to do the same- we all thought they would tire towards the end but even with 10 men they kept going and it was competitive.
“I probably shouldn’t say this but I was almost quite pleased that Farnborough managed to get a goal-it was never going to change the outcome of the match and although as a team we never like to concede you can’t really begrudge them it.
“I think the conference is pretty much the same level as the third division now, a lot of the players have played league football and it shows.
“There was a bit of a scramble for shirts at the final whistle and I think it was Danny Carroll who got mine –but that’s the kind of thing that really made it such a great day for them.
“They will be able to say they played at Highbury against Arsenal and nobody can take the memories away from them-you could see why playing at our place was a great day out for them and the fans.
“Franny Jeffers got a couple of goals and now he is making the squad every week I think he can only get better and better.
“He has plenty of pace and makes some great runs behind the defence-the trouble is for him is that there are so many good strikers at the club, but he has been working hard in training and really wants to make a go for it here.
“It is much harder to break through these days and that has changed so much since when I came through 11 years ago-you have to be an exceptional talent to make it .
“Football is a business nowadays though and mangers will buy in success if they have too-you just have to work as hard as you can to get a chance.”

31/01/03- Ray’s Anniversary Parade Drizzled On

Arsenal went to sleep in injury time and let 3- points slip at Anfeild.
Ray in action as the scousers sing boring songs
Ray started, returning to his old position on the wing as Gilberto partnered Vieira in centre of midfield. Ray made his debut 11 years to the day at Anfeild, so it was a particularly special game for the Romford Legand
Liverpool started brightly but luckily Michael Owen seems to have lost all his confidence and can’t hit a giants barn door from half a foot. Just as Liverpool were looking more and more dominant Arsenal went down the other end and scored. Bergkamp delivered one of his wonderful weighted balls to Henry who zoomed into the box and shot. Dudek managed to save but the rebound fell to Pires who made no mistakes.
Ray congratulates Bobby
This sucker punch rattled Liverpool and Arsenal began to dominate. Only some good keeping from Dudek kept the score the same. Cygan headed in from a corner but it was cleared off the line by Cheyrou.
Henry then seemed to go into warp over-drive, he raced around Dudek but the angle was a bit too narrow to score.
After the break Liverpool equalised with a scorching shot from John Arne Riise . But ten minutes later Arsenal were a goal up when Bergkamp’s shot was deflected off Stephane “Hand-balling Cheat” Henchoz.
The Arsenal were dominant again and Liverpool found it difficult to get hold of the ball and as the Gunners passed the ball around as the clock ticked away. The home team was reduced to almost spectators and it looked like a certain 3 points. But no, at the start of extra time Liverpool were given a corner, despite the referee or the lines man having a clue weather it was or not. Heskey was able to header Dio’s cross into the net without even jumping up. It has to be said, being a goal up in injury time, Arsenal really should have defended the corner better. We can argue about the corner decision till we are blue in the face but the fact is we should have put the game beyond them way before that.

31/01/03- Man U Away Is "Hardly Ideal"

Here is Romford’s views on drawing Manchester United in the FA Cup from his Islington Gazette column-
“I suppose after getting a third division and then a non-league side we were due a Premiership side in the FA Cup – but going to Old Trafford is hardly ideal.
“That’s the great thing about the FA Cup though and although it’s going to be a big game we are al used to that at this club by now.
“People will probably make United favourites for it after they beat us before Christmas and they are at home.
“They certainly seemed to want it a bit more than we did that day and we will have to put that right in two weeks time.
“But we have got big results at Old Trafford before and now we’ll have to get another one-we feel we can beat them again but getting a draw and bringing them back to Highbury would also be a decent outcome.”

28/01/03- Ray’s Liverpool Preview

Here’s what Ray has to say about the Liverpool game from his column.
“On Wednesday we go to Anfeild and it’s strange to think it’s 11 years to the day since I made my début on the very same ground- I guess that shows how long I have been around.”
“It’s still one of the great grounds to play at but hopefully will do a bit better than that night when we lost 2-0.
“Liverpool have been on a bad run recently but they will raise their game against us and I think they have to get something out of the game to stay in tough with the top.
“The games between us are always close but we have just had the edge recently and hopefully we can continue that on Wednesday.
“We have started a nice little run going again and we want to continue it for as long as we can.”

28/01/03- Goliath Sits On David

Well, a difficult game to get exited about, unless you were a Farnborough player or supporter. Of course Ray’s first start for god knows how long was as reason.
The Farnborough what the whole of the Clock End and were determined to enjoy their 90 minutes of fame. Arsene Wenger fielded a pretty decent team , Vieira back from injury partnering Raymondo , Franny and Kanu up front , Pires and Kolo on the wings , Lauren ,Sol, Cygan and Gio in defence and Taylor in goal.
Arsenal started off sluggishly, Kanu lumbering around in the uninterested way we unfortunately expect these days. Ray had a shot on goal which produced a good save from the Boro keeper. Then after 19 minutes Arsenal got a corner taken by Van Bronckhorst and Campbell rose to head. Five minutes later Jeffers got his first of the afternoon after a neat cut-back from Toure.
Ray admires the talents of Farnborough
As if Farnborough didn’t have a hard enough mountain to climb already, the had a player sent off. Christian Lee tugged on Jeffer’s shirt as he ran into the box and was given his marching order. It was nice to see Ray being very prominent in trying to persuade the ref not to , but it really was a fair decision.
Down to 10 men, Farnborough really didn’t disgrace them selves and managed to keep Arsenal out ,Jeffers had a goal disallowed and Ray had a shot that rocketed over the bar. In the 68th minute Franny got his second when Gio crossed the ball from the byline for The Fox In The Box to head in .
It was about this time that some idiot decided to run onto the pitch to display his crown jewels to the whole of Highbury, judging by Ray’s reaction he was extremely amused by this ( I suspect Ray would have liked to be a streaker in another life).
Then ,shock, horror, Farnborough scored. Rocky Baptiste got the better of Pascal Cygan and after Taylor saved the first shot but Rock scored with the second attempt. As the Cock End exploded into a chorus of “ ROCKY, ROCKY, ROCKY”- you couldn’t help thinking it was nice for these part-timers to score a goal against Arsenal at Highbury. But it is also distinctly unsettling to see Cygan being made a fool of by a Conference player.
Bergkamp came on and scored in the 74th minute and the Lauren made in 5-1 four minutes later with a good solo effort. Jeffers missed out on a hat-trick for his 22nd birthday running onto a pass from Ray, but he blased his shot over the bar.
All in all Arsenal did enough without exerting them selves too much. Farnborough didn’t disgrace them selves either and in a lot of ways made more of a go of it than Oxford. Ray and Gio were both excellent, but I have to say despite his two goals Jeffer’s was disappointing. He has enough chances in the game and really should have scored about six. Maybe I am being fussy after the magnificence of Henry in the past few weeks.

23/01/03- Ray’s Farnborough Preview

Here’s Ray’s Views On Saturday’s Game Against Farnborough from his Islington Gazette Column-
“I can assure you no one will be treating Saturday’s FA Cup tie like a walk in the park.
“It will be the biggest match of their lives for the Farnborough boys but I can guarantee wont want to roll over and die and just enjoy the day.
“It’s their chance to pit themselves against some of the best players in the world and I am sure they will come to Highbury and give us a real battle.
“I am certainly hoping to play in the game and the FA Cup is always special-we have got to the last two finals and we want to get there again.
“ Some people say it’s a shame the game was switched but I think you can see Farnborough’s view-the chance to play somewhere like Highbury might not come up again and I’m sure the players are happier to come to us, regardless of the money.”

23/01/03- Dennis Isn't Dirty

Here is what Romford had to say about Sunday’s win against West Ham from his Islington Gazette Column-
“Sometimes in football you seem to get the rough end of decisions and I think West Ham were feeling this after Sunday’s game at Highbury.
“It’s always hard when you get a penalty and a red card at the same time-it happened to us a at Southampton a while back and it almost looses you the game there and then.
“Having said that I thought West Ham showed great character to come back into it and although we were always on to 5there were a few nervous looks going around before Thierry wrapped it up.
“The incident with Dennis Bergkamp and Lee Bowyer seems to have grabbed all the headlines and I can’t believe Dennis will get banned because of that.
“Although it might have warranted a free-kick at the time I don’t think Dennis meant to do it and it seems every thing we do is highlighted these days.
“Nobody could ever call Dennis a dirty player yet he is under threat from a ban again-hopefully the FA will see sense and that will be the end of it.
For me personally it was great to be back into action for the last 20 minutes and hopefully I can stay fit for a while now .
“It has been a very frustrating season for me and whenever I do play I feel in good nick so it’s feel doubly annoying to have to sit out so much of the season so far.
“Luckily we still everything to play for so I am coming back at the right time as we are going for trophies on three fronts.”

22/01/03- Revenge Of The Pink Parlour

There was an absolute gem in yesterday’s Evening Standard’s “Football Notebook”. Here is the anecdote in its entirety-
Comedian Alan Davies, a lifelong Gooner, gave a nice speech at the Football Writers' tribute dinner to Tony Adams.
He repeated a tale from Ray Parlour about how Arsene Wenger was dubbed 'Clouseau' by the Arsenal players.
Before one game the Frenchman ushered his players out into the tunnel before excusing himself to go to the toilet. Unfortunately, there was a security alert and the players were told to return to the dressing room. When Wenger re-emerged to find his squad milling around, he asked them what was going on. Up piped Ray Parlour, in his finest Peter Sellers impersonation: "There is a burm." To which Wenger replied, classically: "A burm?"
As everyone dissolved in laughter, Parlour continued: "Yes, a burm."
When the laughter had stopped, Wenger said: "Raymond . . . I do believe you are having a joke with me.''

22/01/03- Ray Gets Shirty

 Rayworm
Football365 now selling a Romford Pele T-Shirt. It costs £14.99 and you can order it Here.
I’m not sure about the design though. His neck in bleached out so the resembles a worm coming out of an apple.

21/01/03- Beauty and The Beast

With Ray Parlour still a little short of match fitness, Arsene Wenger opted for a central midfield pairing of Edu and Gilberto, hardly surprising since the Brazilian double act had done so well at Birmingham City. Vieira was rested to ensure he fully recovers from his groin strain.
guess who’s back
This was always going to be an explosive match. West Ham fighting for their Premiership lives, Arsenal needing a win to maintain their lead at the top and "young lad" Lee Bowyer being present all combined to make for even more controversy than is usual in a televised Arsenal match.
The Gunners started well, a teasing cross by Henry after 3 minutes missing Bergkamp's outstretched leg by millimetres and going just wide.By now Arsenal were running the match and on 11 minutes a sublime through ball by Bergkamp was latched onto by Pires who was clearly pulled back by Lomas. Penalty and straight red card. The only controversial element to it was Roeder's accusation of diving post match. Henry coolly dispatched the pen and The Gunners looked to be cruising. They created chance after chance against West Ham's 10 men, with only some inspired goalkeeping from England's number 32 David James keeping them in it.
However Edu decided to gift the Irons a chance by tamely passing back to Seaman, allowing Defoe to nip in and bury it. Arsenal continued to press and really should have had a hatfull. West Ham emerged with renewed purpose for the 2nd half and in truth the Gunners were struggling. Wenger, perhaps sensing that it was going to take something special to win the game, sent on Ray Parlour in a straight swap for his Brazilian compatriot Edu.
get up you little toe rag
Almost immediately Ray got stuck and tenaciously won the ball in the middle of the park. The ball eventually made its way out to Bergkamp who was assaulted by a West Ham player and stupidly swung an arm. This caught the inrushing Lee Bowyer, whom I'm sure was going to try and legitimately win the ball. Bergkamp slapped Lee a good'un and he went down like a lady in the passenger seat of Dave Pleat's motor - quick. He's just a young lad so I'm sure it really hurt. The referee strangely decided all was well and allowed Bergkamp to cross for Henry to head, yes that's right head, home.
Having regained the lead, Arsenal were never likely to relinquish it again and a sublime move was finished by Henry in fine style for his hattrick.
Arsenal on the day were superb. Some of the football they played was frankly awesome and it was a real privilege to see a striker so on top of his game. Henry was devastating and I don't recall seeing him so up for a League game. Have a look at the picture of him "celebrating" with the prone Lee Bowyer after his 2nd goal. The man was possessed!
Such a pity that this was all overshadowed by Roeders post-match comments. Claiming Pires dived is dishonest and I'd hope he realises that now. Saying "Bergkamp elbowed my player, you could see his hand hit him in the face" is frankly laughable. I wasn't aware that Dennis' elbow was on his hand.
Overall a thoroughly deserved victory that keeps The Arsenal 5 points clear at the top. Parlour had an excellent half hour and must surely be in contention for a start away at Liverpool.

18/01/03-Ray Ready For West Ham

Ray is fit again and should play in Sunday's game at home to West Ham

18/01/03-Ray's Hammers Preview

Here’s Ray’s thoughts on this weekends opposition West Ham from his Islington Gazette Column-
“Now West Ham come to Highbury on Sunday and having supported them as a kid it’s sad for me to seem them at the wrong end of the table.
“I am still sure they will get out of trouble though and I have said all along that Glenn Roeder is the right man for the job. With the players they have got they should be in the top half.
“Lee Bowyer could be the signing they need to spark them and although he has come with a bit of baggage West Ham could be a new start for him.
“Players can get isolated when they move away from home and I think now Lee is back in London it might help him.
“He knows he hasn’t always done the right thing in the past but he is a talented player and I am sure he will do well for them.
“Hopefully I will be involved on Sunday-I came through 90 minutes for the reserves in a friendly on Tuesday and am ready to go again.”

16/01/03-Ray Returns in Friendly

Ray played a full 90 minutes in a specially arranged friendly with Luton. Arsenal won 2-0 with Franny Jeffers scoring both goals . Here’s the report from Arsenal.com.

16/01/03-Ray On Tel's Ton

Here’s Ray’s views on Thierry Henry’s 100 goals for Arsenal from his Islington Gazette column-
“It’s hard to believe that Thierry Henry has already scored 100 goals for us and the way is going you would have to think he will be the first to get 200 for the club.
The key for Thierry is that he settled very quickly in London and that can make a big difference for a player.
“He had a tough time over in Italy where Juventus were playing him out of position and he found the attention over there a bit too much-in London he can be himself a bit more, he has as settled life and a English girlfriend and you can see the benefit of that on the pitch.
“All the talk this week seems to be comparing Thierry to Ian Wright and I’m just glad I have lucky enough to play with both of them.
“Premiership defenders are becoming more and more frightened of Thierry’s pace and when he gets a couple of yards on you there is no catching him as we saw again of Sunday.
“Wrighty was a different kind of player altogether, more of a poacher but you always knew with him that if he got the chance he would stick it away. He was second to none in that respect.
“When Wrighty set that record in 1997 I think we all thought it would never be broken so it just shows how good Thierry has been that we are already talking about him breaking it.”

13/01/03-New Member For 100 Club

Thierry Henry scored his 100th goal for Arsenal as The Gunners beat Birmingham City 4-1away.
Ray didn’t play as he has yet to recover from the calf injury that has kept him out since before Christmas. Vieira was out as well so Wenger fielded the unfamiliar Brazilian partnership of Edu and Gilberto in the centre of midfield.
The game was delayed for half an hour due to a flood light failure just before kick off.
Steve Bruce gave debuts to all his new January signings, French international Dugarry, ex-spud Stephen Clemence and ex-Tractor Boy Jamie Clapham. You could say it was a baptism of fire.
the ton up boys
Henry put Arsenal 1-0 up after just 5 minutes racing on to a delicious ball from Dennis Bergkamp. Being 1-0 down didn’t deter City though who put on some decent pressure, Dugarry particularly looking threatening. But just when they seemed to be finding their feet in the game the ball fell kindly to Pires in their penalty box who blasted it into the net. This seemed to knock the stuffing out City as Arsenal started turning up the class.
In the second half Bergkamp crossed to ball dangerously towards goal and Lauren headed it in deflecting of a hopeless Michael Johnson on the way. Then three minutes later Henry linked up well with Wiltord and Pires went round Vickers and coolly scored his 100th Arsenal goal.
4-0 up Wenger happily was able to make some changes, van Bronckhorst came on for Edu, Kolo Toure for Pires and Franny Jeffers for Bergkamp.
All in all a professional performance from Arsenal especially Bergkamp and Henry the two members of the Arsenal 100 Club.

13/01/03-Ray Back In Training

Here’s some good news from Ray on his injury from his Islington gazette column-
“I am in training again following my calf injury and have not lost a lot of fitness since I last played against Valencia and then Spurs.
“My training has gone really well and I was training hard with the fitness instructor earlier this week before joining in fully with the rest of the team. Its now down to the manager now and hopefully I can impress during training this week.

13/01/03-It’s Hard To Catch A Keeper

In his Islington gazette column, Ray talk of the difficulties of finding in Arsenal a new goalkeeper-
“The transfer window has opened again and the manager has probably got a rough idea of who he wants to bring in a goalkeeping cover. Rame Shaaban broke his leg which is bad news and then Stuart Taylor broke his finger.
“It is worrying because we have to rely on David Seaman to keep fit. He does stay fit for a lot of the time but you never know. The manager probably knows who he wants but it is getting him at a price that is good for the club. A lot of teams will know that Arsenal are looking for a keeper and will try and push the price up as well.”

13/01/03-It’s A Fairytail for Farnborough

Here’s Ray’s views on Saturday before lasts FA Cup game with Oxford and his views on the fourth found tie with Farnborough from his Islington gazette column-
“It was great to see Dennis Bergkamp score his 100th goal for the club this week and although there is all this talk about him retiring I am sure he has got a lot left in the tank.
“I know Dennis loves Arsenal and loves London and has done brilliantly for Arsenal in reaching 100 goals for the club. He is one of the greatest signings Arsenal has ever made and is a very important player for us.
“He has the ability to unlock defences and that is something that you definitely need to be successful especially with so many teams defending so deeply in many of our matches.
“Saturday’s win in the FA Cup over Oxford had a strange atmosphere. They had a lot of fans there but there was not a lot of noise. Again it was a good performance really and we did the job that needed to be done.
“It was a bit like a training game really but we still worked hard to win the ball back when it was lost.
“ The draw against Farnborough in the fourth round just shows the beauty of the FA Cup and it like a fairytale for them against the double champions.
“There were the big ties in the fourth round such as Manchester United against West Ham but everyone seemed to be talking about our tie with Farnborough. Whether the match is played at Farnborough or Highbury we will need to be professional.
“It will be a difficult decision for them to choose where the game will be played. If it is at Highbury then they will gain more financially but if it was at Farnborough they would have more of a chance of winning because the pitch is not likely to be as good .
“But I think it’s a great tie.”

13/01/03-Christmas Round Up

Arsenal cruised to victory at home to Middlesborough the Saturday before Christmas, with an early headed goal by Sol Campbell and a late strike by Bobby Pires. 'Boro were dire, never threatening the ageing Seaman in goal and in truth the Gunners could have won by considerably more if they'd bothered to get out of second gear. Ray Parlour was a late withdrawal from this match, injuring his calf in the warm up sufficiently badly to play no part in the hectic holiday programme.
On Boxing day The Arsenal traveled to West Brom, a potential banana skin, if ever there was one. The Baggies struck after only 3 minutes, poor marking giving some old journeyman a free header from a corner. Arsenal rallied in the second half, Jeffers leveling before Thierry Henry pounced with just minutes left, turning on his blistering pace to round the keeper and slot home for a just about deserved 2 - 1 victory.
The Sunday before New Year we entertained Liverpool at The Home Of Football. Toadalike manager Houllier seemed to have forgotten to pack any strikers or attacking midfielders as Arsenal lined up against a 4 - 6 -0 formation. Predictably one way traffic ensued with the Arsenal refusing to get sucked too far up the pitch and 'Pool content to sit deep and hoof the ball upfield. Eventually Owen limped off with (yet another) groin twinge to be replaced by some overpaid mediocre bloke. Arsenal by now were far too slack at the back and a mix up between Keown and Seaman almost gifted the Scousers a goal. Ash cleared one off the line from the resulting corner and suddenly 'Pool looked almost interested. Baros broke free and Sol brought him down for a cast iron penalty dispatched by the one who looks like a coin chucker but isn't. Arsenal pressed for an equaliser against what was now a 6 - 4 - 0 formation and were rewarded when Jeffers, who'd come on as a sub, turned smartly and forced Riise to tug him back. He then tumbled like Owen in the box and the ref had no hesitation in giving the pen, which Henry coolly dispatched to make it 1 - 1. Interestingly, the entire staff and supporters of former big club Liverpool suffered a collective bout of amnesia and complained bitterly about referees costing them big matches. Cardiff in 2001 anyone ? Rush goalie Henchoz mean anything to you Gerard ?
On New Years Day Chelsea visited Highbury. They may be geographical neighbours, but the Gooners wasted no time in reminding them of the light years between the clubs in terms of trophies. Perhaps shocked to be playing on a pitch with green stuff on, (it's grass Graeme), the blues froze in front of the Arsenal goal despite having the lions share of the midfield. Arsenal went ahead after 10 minutes through a Desailly own goal. Monkey lookalike Zola who looked tired after spending most of the post Christmas period playing with his new car tyre on a rope was subbed after being crunched by Ralph. The Reds finally added a second through a fine strike from the edge of the box by Gio and it looked game over when Cudicini let Henry's tame shot squirm through for 3 - 0. However bad defending let Chelsea pull one back with 10 minutes left and nerves jangled seriously when Seaman fumbled shortly after to allow former big club player Petit to score. Arsenal held on to win 3 -2.
So 10 points out of 12 over the holiday period and the Gunners remain top of the League, 5 points clear.
Round Up By Peter Krige

07/01/03-Ray Sorry About Injury Set Back

I’ve been off on my Christmas Hols of the last couple weeks so sorry the site hasn’t been up dated for a while. As you all know its been a pretty good festive season for Arsenal but not so much for Ray who has missed all the games over Christmas with a calf strain. Here is a some what late Ray’s Islington gazette Column from before the Oxford game-
“I was quite surprised with Liverpool and their tactics in the first half on Sunday. They did not come forward at all and if we had scored in the first half it would have definitely opened the game up a bit.
“They defended very well overall. They came forward a bit in the second half and you expect that and to be fair they did not want to loose the game after the run they have been having and most teams are happy to get a point at Highbury.
“They were 1-0 up and could have won the game but we got the penalty . I could not see it from where I was sitting at the time but looking it a lot of referees would not have given it. It was one of those where some you get some you don’t.
“Francis Jeffers has done very well recently. He scored against West Brom last week and came off the bench to get us a penalty on Sunday.
“Francis is a great young player with lots of potential. He is going to learn a lot from our strikers.
“His ankle is a lot better and he is going to need a run in the team some time soon. Quality strikers are hard to find.
“The F.A cup starts for us on Saturday when we play Oxford United at Highbury and the competition has always been very special to me .
“I remember the F.A Cup finals when I was a kid and the whole point of the FA Cup is to play teams like Oxford just like when we went to Carlisle last season.
“We need to treat the Oxford game like we would if we were playing Manchester United and the FA Cup are always very hard games.
Oxford are a positive side who are playing well and they will come into the game with nothing to loose.
“If we can play at our best then I am sure we will walk away comfortable winners. Maybe the manager will rest a few after a busy Christmas and he maybe will mix it up a little. He will look to see who is tired after the games we have had recently and decide then. “Unfortunately I will not be fit in time after I injured my calf last week.
“I trained on Friday before the Middlesbrough Game and I felt really good before hand. But then my calf stiffened up and I trained and it got a bit worse.
“Then I was warming up against Middlesbrough and felt as though someone had stuck a knife in the back of my calf. But it is not a major injury and nothing to do with the knee injury I had recently.
“It was maybe because I was out for 13 weeks with the knee injury and then had hard games against Valencia and then we had the North London derby. It was very frustrating being out again and I though I had a chance of playing in the center of midfield. “But I have been lucky over the years with no major injuries and hopefully I will only be out for a week and then I can start playing again.”

20/12/02-Lets Make 2003 Even Better!

Here is Rays views on the race for the title and the games over the Christmas period from his Islington Gazette column-
“It’s been brilliant for me to be involved again and I know that the Christmas period gives me a great chance to make up on a lot of football I have missed.
“Obviously with so many games coming up the manager might want to chop and change the team a bit but I want to be involved if I can be.
“The Christmas period is always vital and we have some massive games like Liverpool and Chelsea at home-but it is just as important that we go to West Brom on Boxing day and win there.
“They will be desperate to beat us and it’s those results that count just as much as beating your rivals for the title.
"We are a point ahead at the top and we have to settle for that –Manchester United have come back well in the last few weeks but we always knew that would happen and I am sure they will drop a few more points along the way."
Ray then continued saying, “With the Champions League out of the way for a while we can look to our league form and with four games in 12 days you can make or loose a lot of ground.
Hopefully we can start it off with a win over Boro on Saturday and then we have that trip to West Brom. Like most years we meet in a hotel on Christmas day to prepare for the game and as a professional footballer you get use to it at this time of year.”
But we know what is expected of us, and after dropping a few points recently we want to make sure we have a good run-2002 was a great year for every one connected with Arsenal, but we want to make 2003 an even better one!”

20/12/02-Ray's Sp*rs Review

Here are Ray’s views on the sp*rs match-
“Sunday’s match was a very tough one to be involved in and we are just glad we came away from it with a point,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette column. “Spurs really came at us in the first 25 minutes and we have to be to be honest and say we rode our luck a bit to keep it to one goal then to be level at half time was very fortunate.
“But I thought some of our defending was brilliant, we had to dig deep as they were trying to win the game there and then and we survived it in the end.
“From their point of view, the penalty was a bit disappointment as it was so unnecessary but we took our chance and got back into the game after that.
“A lot has been made of the fact that Sunday was a physical game but although it was the derby, you just come to expect that in every game these days.
“The stakes are so high whether you are battling to win the Premiership or fighting to stay in it and whether you are playing Man United or Man City it is still going to be a real tough battle”

17/12/02-Spud's Best Still Not Enough

So the season effectively ends for Tottenham, albeit on a high after their outstanding "performance of the season " display, against a lacklustre Arsenal earnt them a draw and a crucial point in their inevitable struggle to not quite make European qualification.
Sick note tries to make Ray join his injury club
Ray started for the first time in 3 months in place of the still injured Vieira, but looked a little tired after his exertions against Valencia earlier in the week. In fact the whole team seemed jaded in the first half, and Sperz perhaps buoyed by the fact that they haven't really had much midweek football to play for the last 10 years drew first blood. A fiercely driven, curling freekick from that ugly German bloke beating "Old Safe Hands " all ends up.
Sperz continued to press, though some excellent goalkeeping from Seaman kept us in it. Ashley Cole made 2 fine goal line clearances which some misguided fools have chosen to describe as "lucky". Errrrrr, he's a defender, defending, on the line. Gosh it's lucky he was doing his job ! Ray was battling hard in central midfield but found himself too frequently outnumbered. He was still able to sting the hands of Yank reject Keller in the Sperz goal with a pile driver from fully 30 yards out.
more ugly morons
Just when it seemed the Gunners would go in at 1 - 0 down, Henry raced onto a through ball only to be toppled by dud goalie Keller. Thierry gave the ball to Bobby Pires and he slammed the penalty straight in. Half time 1-1.
Arsenal rallied in the second half as Parlour and his assistant Gilberto took a stranglehold on the midfield, and had numerous chances to win the game, notably when Henry dribbled the length of the pitch and squared for Bergkamp whose shot was blocked from 6 yards out.
Sperz' "Goal-scoring Sensation " Robbie Keane, didn't score a goal. Is there a worse player at one on ones ? Darren Anderton's words prematch obviously unsettled the Arsenal players: "I wanted to win things, that's why I went to Sperz.....I've played in a couple of Worthington Cup Finals...."
Apparently this was Tottingham's "best performance of the season. " Arsenal were well below average. The result 1 -1 and six games since a Sperz victory over The Arsenal. What does that tell you about these two teams ?

1212/02-YET Another Ray Interview

Ray has been busy. Here He Is Talking To The High And I-
“Patrick’s a very important player for us and if he’s fit I’m sure he’ll play, but you’ve got to take your opportunities with both hands,” said Parlour, before adding: “I enjoyed it in the centre on Tuesday night.
“You can get a bit isolated on the right, and the game can go past you very quickly. But in the middle you’ve got to be very sharp and you are always involved.”
If Parlour is selected for the north London derby, though, he can expect no favours from a Spurs side still smarting from their big loss at Highbury a month ago.
“They came over here and we beat them 3-0 and now we’re going to White Hart Lane and it would make their season if they could beat us,” said Parlour.
“I’m sure we will have to be on our toes. But the lads thrive on that. We enjoy playing in games when you are up for it.
“You don’t need to motivate yourself for games like Spurs away. I’m sure the lads will be up for it. We’ve got a few days to recover.”
Parlour believes that the 0-0 draw with Valencia has at least restored Arsenal’s confidence after the disappointment of Saturday’s 2-0 Premiership defeat at Old Trafford.
“You’ve always got to bounce back,” said Parlour. “Everyone was really disappointed after the Manchester United game.
“I thought we controlled the first 15 minutes and didn’t play badly but they had that yard in front of us and wanted it more than us – that doesn’t happen a lot at Arsenal.”

12/12/02-Another Ray Interview

Gosh, we are being treated at the moment. Here is another Interview with Ray from Wednesdays Evening Standard.
He said: "As for the Spurs game, that is down to the manager. If Patrick is fit then I am sure he will come straight back in the team because he is a vital player for us.
"But if he isn't, hopefully I can make the most of it. It didn't go badly against Valencia - I got my chance and you have to make the most of it.
"I lacked a bit of sharpness but considering it was my first game for 12 weeks other than a reserve match and a 30 minutes-each-way friendly with Watford, it went well.
"I can play right or centre-midfield, but I enjoy it in the central position because you are always involved. You can get a bit isolated on the right-hand side and the game can go past you very quickly. In the centre you have to be sharp the whole game.
"As for Sunday, yes, I would love to play. They will be up for it, of course. They came here and we beat them 3-0. Now we are going back to White Hart Lane and I am sure it will make their season if they can beat us so we have to be on our toes.
"You don't need to motivate yourself for that kind of match. We have a few days to recover now and get our minds set on the game."
Ray also revealed how his team-mates were determined to respond positively to the defeat at Manchester United on Saturday. He said: "It is always good to bounce back. Everyone was really disappointed after the United game.
"I watched it on television and I thought we controlled the first 20 minutes. We didn't play badly, but they were a yard in front of us and they wanted it more - which doesn't happen a lot at Arsenal so that was a disappointment. We wanted to put on a performance against Valencia and we were perhaps a bit unlucky not to walk away with three points. But we kept a clean sheet and that was important.
"They were a very good side. Even when they went down to 10 men it didn't make much difference because they played the same way with just one up front. When we go to their place they will give us a hell of a game. But those are the games in which you want to be involved."

12/12/02-Ray’s Spurs Preview

Here’s Ray’s views on Sundays North London derby-
“Having lost three of our last away games in the Premiership, the Derby at Shite (sorry misprint-Ed) White Hart Lane gives us a good chance to bet back on track on Sunday,” Ray said in his column. “I think we all know it won’t be as comfortable as the game at Highbury a month ago was. Spurs got criticism after that game and they have to make a better fight of it in front of their own fans.
Unlike that game I will be hoping to be involved on Sunday and the derby game at their place is just a brilliant game to play in.
“The atmosphere is always hostile but I have played in a few of these games over the years now and after so long on the sidelines this season I am looking forward to it.
“Spurs have shown they are a force to be reckoned with at home but we know if we play to our best of our ability then we should win the game.”
Ray against Valencia

12/12/02-Ray Delight At Return

Ray has spoken of his delight at playing his first game in three months against Valencia-
“It was fantastic to get back involved on Tuesday although it would have been even better if we had nicked a goal and all three points,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column. “Being injured is always frustrating but this recent injury has been particularly so as it seemed to drag on for so long. That is why I was so relieved to get back into the action as a first half substitute in place of Patrick Vieira against Valencia and felt I did alright considering it was my first comeback game after a lengthy lay off.”

12/12/02-Ray Happy To Step In For Paddy

There is an interview with Ray in today’s Sun. In it The Romford Rocket says that he is all to happy to replace Patrick Vieira in Sunday clash with Spurs and also talks some more about the frustration of being injured.
He said: "I could do the job on Sunday, if I'm asked.
"I'd look forward to it because you have got to take your chance when it comes along.
"It's my favourite position. You're always involved when you're in the centre of midfield, whereas sometimes you can become isolated on the wing.
"I was happy with the way it went against Valencia in what was my first game back. It's been very frustrating on the sidelines."
He added: "That sort of injury can be quite serious but I'm a quick healer and thought I would be back in six weeks.
"It's turned out to be about 10 weeks.
"That's a very long time to be out, probably the longest of my career.
"I've done a lot of resting and waiting - which can be hard. It's been a real test for me but you try to be strong in yourself."
He added: "The timing of the injury was bad because it was only a couple of weeks into the campaign when it first happened and I was really looking forward to the season - especially after the end of the last one. "I've had to bide my time but I know there are a lot of people in a worse position than myself.”

12/12/02- Ray –United Must Be A Useful Reminder

Here’s Ray’s views on the Manchester United loss from his Islington Gazette Column-
“Loosing to Manchester United was a big blow at the weekend and I think we know we underperformed that day.
“United were really up for the battle and once they had scored we just couldn’t get back into the game. “Obviously it makes the title race a little bit more interesting for everybody but I can tell you that nobody was thinking United were out of it anyway.
“We are not even at the half way point yet in the league and to say that if someone is 5 or 10 points behind then they can’t win it is ridiculous.
“Both ourselves and United have proved that wrong over the last few years and just look at the teams that have beaten both of us this season-nothing is decided yet.
“But the match did serve as a useful reminder to us as to how we are going to have to play over the next six months to hold on to our title.”

11/12/02-New Ray Interview

There was an interview with the Romford Pele in last night match program. You can read it on-line Here .

11/12/02-The Return Of Ray

Arsenal outplayed, outfought, but ultimately failed to outscore a talented Valencia side at Highbury in the second phase of the Champions League.
Back In Action
Lauren returned at right back along with Sol Campbell and David Seaman, to give the defence a familiar look although there was still no place in the starting line-up for Ray Parlour as the Gunners attempted to put their disappointment at the capitulation at Old Trafford behind them.
Sol makes a superb goa-line clearance as Ray looks on
Tottingham supporters switched over after EastEnders just in time to see a sweet move result in a sublime centre from Bergkamp which Freddie Ljungberg got close to but failed to properly control. Henry was put through shortly afterwards by the increasingly uncomfortable looking Vieira but he took the ball too wide and the keeper smothered the chance.
Perhaps sensing that the Spanish League leaders, second top scorers and a team who have conceded fewest goals in their division, as well as being top scorers in the 1st Phase of the CL were going to be a tough nut to crack, Arsene Wenger sent on Ray Parlour in place of Patrick Vieira with 10 minutes left of the first half. The fact that Vieira was having trouble moving due to an injury also played a part in the decision.
Ray had an immediate impact, setting about the Spanish side and driving the team on from the centre of the park. His dominance grew after the break, and for long periods it seemed as though everything was flowing through him as he sprayed passes around, always making himself available for team mates. When Arsenal lost possession, he was there too, snapping at the Valencia players heals and generally breaking up their passing to great effect. Indeed the Spanish players' frustrations got the better of them when Angulo was dismissed for a cynical off the ball elbow. Aimar too was substituted to avoid a second dismissal, although it took a while to extract the world-famous playmaker from The Romford Pele's pocket where he had spent most of the 2nd half.
In truth Arsenal had much the better of the game and really should have scored, most notably right at the end when Wiltord missed a sitter from 6 yards out with the keeper in no man's land. Valencia had a couple of chances, but to restrict one of Europe's top clubs and competition favourites to 3 shots on target in 90 minutes is impressive stuff indeed. The defence were outstanding with Sol awesome yet again. Their Keeper kept them in the game with a string of almost unbelievable saves and the players responded in a fantastic manner to the disappointment of the weekend.
Tottenham are next to feel the wrath of the Gunners, and with Vieira likely to miss out, Ray is almost certain to start in their Cup Final.
Look out Sperz cos Ray Parlour is back.
Report-Peter Krige

10/12/02-Ray On Standby

Patrick Vieira only has a 40% chance of playing Valencia tonight after straining a abductor muscle in training. If the Arsenal captain does miss the game it is possible that Wenger will throw The Romford Pele in, despite not being back to full fitness. Ray scored the winning goal last time the two teams met at Highbury two seasons ago.

10/12/02-Poor Show In Manchester

Arsenal surrendered the three points on Saturday in an almost embarrassing fashion. Clearly missing a player of the commitment, drive and tenacity of Ray Parlour, World Cup winners Patrick Vierira and Gilberto were outplayed and out fought by Phil Neville, yep that's right, Phil Neville.
It could all have been so different if Henry had tucked away what looked a routine chance for him early on. However he elected to pass it back to Barthez instead.
Man United scored twice either side of a good lobbed effort from Pires, but however you try to dress it up Arsenal were dire. The only player to emerge with any credit was Keown who gave a committed full blooded display. The punch to Ruud Van WonFukall will land him in trouble with the video panel and one wonders if they'll now bother to look at RVW's punch to Freddie during this fixture last season ? I doubt it.
An injury to Shabaan who had no chance for Man U's first means he'll be out for 3 weeks. Stuart Taylor stepped in and did ok, a good save and no chance with the second.
Excuses about offsides and handballs can in no way gloss over the fact that we got what we deserved - nothing. Maybe the player's minds were on the visit of Valencia this Tuesday. If they were that's not good enough. I can only hope that this was the kick up the backside the players need. (How many more times am I going to write that this season ?)
Report-Peter Krige

10/12/02-Tony-Arsenal Miss Ray Resilience

Tony Adams thinks Arsenal miss Ray at the moment. In Sundays Observer after the Gunners 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford TA said-
“Freddie Ljungberg and Robert Pires are wonderful players going forward, but I don't think you can play them both away from home. I believe Arsenal are missing Ray Parlour. Much is said about the two central midfield players acting as shields for the back four, and Patrick Vieira and Manu Petit were certainly that when we won the Double in '98. But it has to come from elsewhere as well. “
“When Arsenal won at Old Trafford at the end of last season to clinch the Championship, Edu was also playing. Now, neither Parlour nor Edu may be technically as gifted as Ljungberg and Pires, but they do bring you a greater resilience. “

06/12/02-Nice To Be Back

Here’s more from Ray on his road to fitness-
“I am very pleased to be back. It’s been about 11 or 12 weeks which is the longest injury I’ve ever had, “Ray told the Daily Mirror. “The match was a good test because Millwall did very well but the main thing for me was to complete 90 minutes and get some running under my belt.
“It has been hard to sit on the sidelines for that amount of time. Now it is nice to get out on the pitch and get some fresh air.
It has been a slow process because you can be out another six weeks if you aren’t careful. I wanted to make sure I was defiantly right.
However long it took, I just had to wait. I just want to forget about that now and carry on training.
I’ll be training hard this week. You never know, it will be down to the manager and how he thinks I am doing. I have no time limit on it. I would love to be involved on Saturday but that is very unlikely. The quicker the better though.”

06/12/02-Our Man At “The Theatre Of Prawns”

Any of you have Digital Sky Sports Extra .Regular contributor to this site, Peter Krige is doing the commentating on “fanzone” on Saturday. Peter regularly does “fanzone” regularly and brings his own inimitable wit and wisdom to his commentary as he does for the match reports on this site. Peter had the unfortunate task of doing the 6-1 thrashing we got at Old Trafford a couple of years back. But before you think he’s a jinx , he also did our Championship winning game there last season. Here’s a taste of what you can expect.
Good luck Peter.
COME ON ARSENAL!

06/12/02-Ray-“We are Confident”

Ray says Arsenal are feeling confident ahead of Saturday’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford-
“It was a great relief for me to get my boots back on and play 90 minutes on Tuesday in the 3-0 friendly win over Millwall up at London Colney,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column. “It had been almost 10 weeks since I played so it was just nice to get the shirt on again.
“Whether or not I am ready for Old Trafford on Saturday is up to the manager now, but I have put myself back in there and that is a good feeling.”
“Martin Keown and Lauren also came through the match while Kanu scored a couple and Franny Jeffers got one too so it was a good comeback for a lot of us who have been injured. Obviously all eyes are on Old Trafford now and although we know it is a tough place to go we are feeling confident after a great week for the club.
“The win in Rome has show we can go anywhere and win and we haven’t done badly up at Old Trafford in the last couple of years-if you forget the 6-1 the year before last.
“The match was a morning kick-off as well but we wont be treating it like a bad omen-that was just a one-off and every thing went wrong for us that day.
“United have got a few injures and I think when you have them in defence that can be the hardest place of all.
“They paid a lot of money for Rio Ferdinand and he has hardly been able to play for them which I am sure has been frustrating for him and the club.
“A back four need to play together a lot like ours did for so many years in the 80s and 90s and when that doesn’t happen you are going to concede goals.
“The win at Anfeild has kept them in touch at the top though so Saturday is a huge game. Juan Veron has had a lot of stick recently and I think it just takes some players a lot longer to adapt to a new country and a new way of playing.
“We had that a bit with Robert Pires in his first season and look at him now-Veron will come good if he is given time.
“But we are certainly confident that we can go up there and win again- hopefully we will.”

04/12/02-Ray Back In Millwall Friendly

He's Back!
Here is the picture we all wanted to see, Ray playing again ! Ray played a full 90 minutes in a specially arranged friendly against Millwall. Arsenal won 3-0. Here’s the report from the official site. The is also an interview with Ray agout the frustrations of being out for so long here.

03/12/02-Tremendous Tierry Vanquishes Villains

With Ray Parlour still not match fit and no players currently suspended by the video panel at the FA, the Arsenal lineup had a familiar look to it, with Gilberto alongside Vieira in the middle and Bergkamp and Henry upfront. Robert Pires again started on the left, although Wiltord was rested with Toure coming in on the right and Van Bronckhurst came in at left back for the injured Ashley Cole.
Arsenal started well, although Villa had a couple of good chances to open the scoring, one skewed wide and the other well saved by Mr. Keeper Man, Shabaan. On 17 minutes the deadlock was broken when a through ball from Bergkamp was smacked through the keepers legs by Pires. 1 - 0 to the Arsenal and that's how it stayed until half-time, with the Gunners seemingly content to let it remain like that, especially after Toure had one disallowed when he was clearly 3 yards onside.
The players emerged for the second half with a little more purpose and on 50 minutes Henry won a free kick on the edge of the box. Enckleman the Villa goalie set his wall as Highbury held its breath. Pires ran over the ball and Henry stood, arrogant, staring at the Clock End. After what seemed an eternity he hit the ball dipping over the wall and curling into the top corner. Quite possibly one of the greatest free kicks ever witnessed at the Home of Football and absolutely unstoppable.
So 2 - 0 up and the Gunners decided it was time for a wobble.Villa had changed their formation at half-time to 3 - 5 - 2 and it was causing us problems. They scored through an unstoppable drive from well outside the box by a player whose name I will not even attempt to spell. 2 -1 and the atmosphere became tense to say the least. Wenger brought on Keown to match the Villa formation and Arsenal gradually retook control, soaking up the Villa pressure and starting to play again.
Ljungberg burst into the box behind Staunton, who kindly stuck out a leg, which Freddie decided to fall over. Referee Graham Barber awarded a penalty and up stepped Henry. He almost ambled towards the ball, waiting for Enkcleman to move. When he did Henry simply tapped the ball straight down the middle. 3 - 1 and there was simply no way back for Villa.
So another three points keep Arsenal top and with Liverpool losing at home to some team from Manchester, The Arsenal are 4 points clear.

29/11/02-Ray's Villa Preview

In his Islington Gazette column Ray gives his views of the forthcoming game against Aston Villa -
”Everyone will be saying we should win easily against Villa on Saturday but as we did at Southampton you have to work hard in every match in this division.
“Villa had a good result in beating the Hammers 4-1 and it might be a bad time to play them. They will be confident so we can’t be complacent.”

29/11/02-Ray On Saints Loss

Here’s Ray’s views on the Southampton loss and the disciplinary charge that Ashley Cole now faces for swearing at referee Durkin-
“Although I wasn’t with the squad down at Southampton the boys were still gutted about the result on Monday and really feel they let themselves down,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column.“ Obviously the were a few decisions that went against us in the game and although we have won or drawn with 10 men before the law of averages tells you that you won’t escape every time.”
“Sol was very disappointed with his red card though and it now seems Ashley Cole is going to be in trouble with the FA too for what he said to the referee Paul Durkin.
“Ashley is a very passionate player on the pitch and with so much at stake in every game these days it’s hard to keep it all in when you feel hard done by in a game.
We do feel things have gone against us a bit recently and it seems that only Arsenal players are getting done for these type of offences which seem to go on in matches all over the country.
“But we know that as the Champions and one of the biggest clubs we are going to in the limelight more and that the media will focus on us. We just have to get on with the football and can’t let disciplinary hearings bother us Ashley will put it out of his mind, don’t worry about that one.
“Sol’s red card means that he will be suspended for the game up at Old Trafford and that is a big blow for us.
“He has been in great form all season and has become a very important player for us and we know we know we need to be at our best for that game.
“But we have a big enough squad and who ever comes in whether Martin Keown is fit or somebody else we have the confidence in them to do the job.
“ I still haven’t given up hope of being involved either but I wasn’t quite ready to turn out for the reserves on Monday night which was disappointing for me.
“Two months is a long time to be out and I can tell you when you are stuck at home watching the result come in on the TV and seeing you have lost makes it even more frustrating not playing.
“I am hoping to get a run out in a friendly next week and then see how it goes but United Valencia and Spurs are all games you want to be involved in.”

28/11/02-A Message To You Ruddie

Thierry Henry sent the message “anything you can do I can do better” to Ruud van Nistelrooy with a hat-trick in a 3-1 demolition of Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
A still recovering Ray didn’t feature but Oleg Luzhny recovered from his hamstring problem and put in a performance reminiscent of his Dynamo Kiev glory days. Rami Shaaban deputised for an injured Seaman and looked nervous to begin with. He spilled a shot from Cassando in the first minutes but luckily Cygan was there to clear it. In the 4th minute Totti passed to Cassando who shot past Shaaban. The ball took an agonisingly long to reach the far side of the net . Things looked bad but not for long as Henry found himself loose on the left hand of the box two minutes later and he made no mistakes with a clinical finish into far corner of the net.

Check this out Horse-face!
Arsenal started to find their rhythm while a frustrated Roma went into “Dive-mode”. I have never been a big fan of Totti (how can you when the first four letters of his name is shared with the sh*test team in the world) but his theatrical falling about deserved at least a booking. Having said that the referee did a fantastic job and was not duped by the Roma players.
Having said that Roma started to look threatening again towards the end of the first half. After the break Roma continues to look strong but Arsenal defended well. Cafu managed to get past Campbell are pass towards Totti who chested the ball down and shot past Shaaban, but then as if out of nowhere Pacal Cygan appeared to make a superb off the line clearance. Shaaban managed to tackle Cassando in the box, the Roma striker tumbled but Rami’s feet bet to the ball and thankfully no penalty was given. Cassando was then substituted for Vincenzo Montella . Then Arsenal took the lead in the 67th minute Henry headed in from a Luzhny cross but it went off Panucci back towards Thierry who quick-wittedly thumped it into the back off the net.
Gabriel Batistuta was then bought on for Roma but there would be no last minute goals for the hairy Argentinean like there was for Fiorentina a few years back. He did, though set up Cafu with his first touch but Shaaban managed to save. The Wiltord was fouled just outside the area and Henry scored a fabulous free kick to complete his hat trick. An excellent result and though at times Arsenal rode their luck they took their chances and deserved to come out victors. It was obviously as brilliant performance from Henry but I Cygan and Luzhny deserve a lot credit as well . Both players come under a lot of criticism at times but they both but in colossal performances on this occasion.
After the game Roma manager Fabio Capello said: “We were beaten by the best team in Europe” ,and on that performance who can argue with him.

27/11/02-No Ray in Rome

Ray will not feature in Tonight’s Champions League game against Roma. Arsenal have a lack of right sided players with Lauren and Luzhny injured and Kolo Toure suspended but despite resuming training this week Arsene Wenger said that The Romford Pele is not ready yet. It looks likely young German Moritz Volz will make his Champions League debut at Right back.

25/11/02-Saints And Sinners

Arsenal took a step back in their rehabilitation loosing 3-1 away to Southampton. Dennis Bergkamp put the Gunners ahead after 38 minutes with a superb shot. In first half injury time though, Arsenal loving ref Paul Derkin gave Southampton a dubious free kick from which Beattie equalised. After the break Vieira very nearly restored the lead but The Saints keeper Niemi, made a superb triple save as the rebounds kept returning to the Arsenal captain.
Things then got worse when Sol Campbell was sent off on 57 minutes for bringing Delgado down, a penalty was given from which Beattie scored . Personally I think Sol had to go there was contact with Delgado and he didn’t touch the ball.
Then from a free kick, Delgado headed Southampton’s third and with 10 men it was a up hill battle for Arsenal. Pires did get one back with 10 minutes to go when Niemi blocked his header from a corner, Bob smashed the rebound in from close range. Then Delap missed a chance of making it 4-2 for The Saints.
It wasn’t a terrible performance by Arsenal but things did rather conspire against us. Southampton do deserve credit though, Gordon Stracken has turned them into a force to be reckoned with. It could have been far worse though, Liverpool lost to Fulham and Chelsea could only draw with Bolton so we stay top. It would have been nice to be four points clear and now we have to face Man U at the Theatre of prawns without Sol. Don’t Panic there’s always Igors!Doh!

22/11/02-Good News

Arsenal have reported on their official site that Ray will return to full training on Monday.

22/11/02-Pompey Parlour?

Daily Express have reported that Portsmouth are keen on signing Ray.
Manager Harry Redknapp told the Express-"We would love to sign Ray Parlour because he is a tremendous player and he would do a great job for us."
I’m sure you would Harry, but does it seem likely but do you think , at 29 Ray will jump at the chance of swapping the Champions League for First Division football.

21/11/02-Ray On The Mend

In his Islington Gazette Column Ray gives an update on his injury-
“My injury is going well and I kicked a ball for the first time in seven weeks on Tuesday-hopefully I should now be back by the end of the month.”

21/11/02-Ray's Derby Delight

Here’s Ray’s views on last Saturdays North London Derby win from his Islington Gazette column-
“The boys did superbly to win the derby on Saturday as no Arsenal-Spurs match is ever easy to win.”
“The red card got a lot of criticism and I thought the first booking was a little harsh, but having said that Simon Davies knew he was on a card and I know from personal experience that in that situation every time you go into a challenge you are on a knife edge.
We scored great goals and staying top was a nice bonus. People are saying Liverpool will be more up for the title after going out of Europe but I bet they would love to still be in there with us.”

21/11/02-Ray:-It's Tough For Young Players

In his Islington Gazette Ray talks about how hard it is for young players to make it into the first squad today-
“With myself Martin Keown and David Seaman injure on Sunday there were only two Englishmen players in the side and I think it’s hard for the boss to risk the younger players in such big games.
“We have a big squad now and it’s tough for younger players-10 years ago when I came through there could be a few players out and you were in the side at 18 or 19.
“But Ashley Cole showed with the way he got past Silvinho that it can be done and all the young guys can try to live up to that.”

21/11/02-Ray On Champs League Group

Here is Ray’s views on Arsenal's draw for the second round of the Champions League from his Islington Gazette column-
“You can’t expect any favors from a draw involving the best 16 teams in Europe so it’s no surprise that we got a tough group in the Champions League draw.
“We knew we were getting Roma and there isn’t much to choose between Valencia and “Barcelona but to get Ajax is probably better than having to go to Moscow- Especially for Dennis Bergkamp who should be able to make the journey back to his old club.
Obviously we know a bit about Valencia and we really had them on the rack at Highbury in the first leg of that quarter final two years ago.
We had a great chance to make it 3-1 when Thierry Henry was through but unfortunately we only took a one goal lead over to Spain.
“But we learnt from that and with our away form having improved so much compared to last year we have to feel confident about our chances.
“Getting a good start in Rome next week is very important and they are a typical Italian side who will be very hard to break down so we have to go there and see if we can get at least a point on the board.”

19/11/02-Demolition Derby

Arsenal cruised to victory against former rivals Tottenham on Saturday. The visitors at full strength were no match for an Arsenal team beginning to hit the heights of earlier in the season. The Gunners had a goal ruled offside before Henry opened the scoring with the undisputed "Greatest Goal in North London Derby History "(tm). A Vieira header out of defence was picked up by the Sperz-Annihilator deep in his own half. He ran the length of the pitch shrugging off efforts to pull him back, then paused at the edge of the opposition 18-yard box and feinted to shoot, leaving both Carr and Ledfoot King on their backsides. There was a tiny gap at the bottom right of Yankee Keller's goal, but Thierry found it with power and accuracy. 1 - 0 to the Arsenal and a small section of the Clock End suddenly went very quiet indeed.

Tel Taunts Tossers
Davies was then sent off for a 2nd booking this one being a crude lunge on Pat Vieira. In fairness the first booking was harsh, although I wouldn't go along with those saying it spoilt the game, this correspondent certainly enjoyed it. What was strange was the referees subsequent reluctance to book anyone else from the visitors as they targeted Vieira with some particularly violent assaults. The Glory Glory days are well and truly over when your game plan consists of fouling the opposition's best player. Having said that, the crafty old Carthorse Teddy S had another cunning plan which consisted of attempting to get Arsenal players to punch him so they would get sent off. How they resisted is any ones guess.
The half ended 1 - 0 with the gunners in complete control. Hoodle reiterated his "get Paddy V" instructions at half-time as sub Gargoyle Poyet attempted to cripple him with almost his first touch of the game. The game itself degenerated into an exhibition in keep ball as the Arsenal played with the visitors in an almost embarrassing fashion. It was a question of not if but how many ? The second came after good work form Henry who selflessly squared for Freddy to tap home. Then a parried shot fell for Pires who again selflessly squared, this time for Wiltord to smack into the top corner.
Most of the visiting supporters then kindly left the stadium, so easing queues at local stations, although there was still a full 25 minutes on the clock. Those that stayed kept noise to a minimum so as not to interrupt the Arsenal fans renditions of 42 years, can we play you every week ?, you're not very good, Sol's a Gooner and other derby favourites.
3 - 0 and it could have been 10. Arsenal had 2 disallowed, scored 3, had one cleared off the line, hit the crossbar and in reality never really broke a sweat. Sperz were a shower with 11 men and a shower with 10. Don't let anyone tell you the result would've been different if they hadn't lost Davies - it wouldn't.
Thankfully one suspects that we won't be seeing carthorse Sheringham at Highbury again. Not even Sperz are so desperate as to keep him for another season are they ?

15/11/02-Ray Gutted To Miss Derby

Here’s Ray’s views on Saturdays North London Derby from his column in the Islington Gazette-
“Although I have missed a lot of games recently none of them will cause me as much disappointment as not being involved this Saturday.”
“I just love playing against Spurs and I am sure their players feel the same way about playing against us.
“There will be a great atmosphere and the game means so much to every one at the club so I am gutted to have to watch it from the stands-again.
“All the talk last year was about Sol Campbell and I suppose he will get some stick again on Saturday but I don’t think it will ever be as bad as it was that first time at Shite (sorry , misprint -Ed) White Heart Lane.
“Sol got through it that day so I think you can assume he will be big enough to do so again on Saturday whatever abuse he gets.
“Spurs are probably coming to Highbury on a bit of a low after their defeat at Sunderland on Sunday but I think if you’d told them at the start of the season they would be eighth with 20 points they would probably would be happy with that .
“Saturday is a perfect chance for them to put that defeat and the one at Burnley out of their minds though nobody needs an extra incentive in a derby match anyway .
“Spurs were riding high till last weekend and Glenn Hoddle has got a solid squad which also has a bit of flair and one that looks like it will finish high in the table this season.
“Having said that the Premiership is a very competitive place to be this season and you only need to look at the result Middlesborough had against Liverpool on Saturday to see that.
“If you have an off day you can be beaten by anybody in this league and we just have to make sure we don’t have one this Saturday.
“Spurs are up there with sides like Boro who are looking to break into the top three or four and they will come to Highbury believing they can get a result on Saturday.”

15/11/02-Ray-Don’t Right off United Yet

Ray doesn’t believe for the moment that Manchester United are out of the title race. In his Islington Gazette column he had this to say about United’s demise-
“A lot of people seem to be saying Manchester United are out of the title race after their bad start but we won’t be falling for that one.”
“United are not playing as a team at the moment and I’m sure Alex Ferguson would admit that, but they have some big players out and there is a long way to go.
“What we have to do is make sure we are picking up as many points as possible now when they are playing badly, to make it harder for them to catch us when they get back on form.”

14/11/02-Ray Could Be Back In Two Weeks

Ray has revealed that he should be fit again for the start of the next phase of the Champions League in a couple of weeks-
“The Draw for the Champions League group stage takes place tomorrow –and we are all exited as to who we might get in our group. All the teams are going to be strong but there are obviously some big names in there and it’s going to interesting for sure.” Ray said in his Islington gazette column.
“Hopefully I will be back in contention for that first group game in a couple of weeks time.
“Its been a tough time to be out with so many big games going on but the knee is almost totally better and I am working hard to get back.”

13/11/02-Gunners Survive Cloggy Cloggers

A Rayless Arsenal qualified top of their group in the Champions League in a 0-0 draw with PSV at Highbury .The other game Group A going our way with Auxerre beating Borussia Dortmund . The Gunners had to play 55 minutes with 10 men after Kolo Toure was sent off for a second booking but PSV looked toothless and Arsenal dominated despite having one less man. It seemed as if PSV’s main game plan was to kick lumps out of still recovering Robert Pires, Andre Ooijer especially. Mark van Bommel also seemed disgruntled at not being bought by Arsenal and seemed to be trying to exact his revenge on any player that came near him. All in all nice to see another clean sheet and all of our players coming through sill walking.PSV don't even make the UAFA Cup. Good.

11/11/02-Carve Toon Time

Arsenal repeated the familiar score line of 1-0 over Newcastle. Ray was still out, still not recovering from his hamstring problem. This time the Gunners looked far more like the awesome Arsenal of a few weeks back though and the scoreline should have been far higher. Oleg Luzhny came in for the injured Lauren at right back and it was his pass the set up Wiltord in the 25th minute. Arsenal defended really well , Pascal Cygan looking far more assured and Oleg seemed more like “The Horse” we thought we had bought from Dynamo Kiev but all the players were pressurising Newcastle when ever the go the ball. The only memorable shot from the visitors was a powerful shot from Viana which luckily bounced down off the cross bar. Bobby Pires came on in second half to exorcise a few demons, it was against Newcastle that he suffer that terrible injury all those month ago. All in all a good performance, Arsenal’s rehabilitation is no yet complete, but we’re getting there.

09/11/02-Ray Happy To Return To Winning Ways

Ray has give his views on the 1-0 win over Fulham in his Islington Gazette column. Here’s what he had to say-
“It might not have been the prettiest of wins but that was a very imporant three points we picked up at Fulham on Sunday.
“After four defeats on the trot it had got to the stage where we just had to turn it round and we’ll take whatever luck that comes our way.
“We certainly hadn’t had much luck in those games we lost so perhaps we earned ourselves a bit-one week we score an own goal and the next week we get one so it evens itself out in the end. “Keeping a clean sheet was another important factor and when you have scored in 51 consecutive league games like we have you know a clean sheet basically means a win .
“That isn’t just down to the back five though, and I think we showed on Sunday that it is a team effort, the midfielders worked hard to cut down the space and the strikers closed down the men on the ball too-that is what you have to do to be hard to beat in the Premiership.
“One striker who might wish he hadn’t gone back to help his defence is Steve Marlet though-it was a pretty awful own goal and a real forwards bit of defending –but as I said earlier it was just good we weren’t on the receiving end this time around!”

07/11/02-Worthless

Arsenal slumped back into loosing ways again giving away a 2-0 lead to loose 3-1 at home to Sunderland in the Worthington Cup.
Both teams put out practically reserve teams , Robert Pires and Gio van Bronckhorst given run outs to help them return to match fitness after long layoffs. It was Pires who scored after 12 minutes when van Bronckhorst’s free kick went to him on the edge of the area. In the 33rd minute Kanu’s pass sent Jeffers clear and it was 2-0.
Kevin Kyle headed in Sunderland’s first goal in the second half after some slack defending . Sunderland’s equaliser was controversial. Pennant, who was having a fine game was push over and needed treatment as a result Stewart scored. The Stewart scored the winner two minutes later
Although few Arsenal supporters will be that bothered about going out of “The Worthless Cup” it is good competitive experience for the youngsters and a good chance for us to see how good they are. Same.
And to Sunderland reserves! Honestly.

05/11/02-Return Of The 1-0

Ray was still out as Arsenal got back to winning ways, admittedly with a lot of luck, with a 1-0 win against Fulham at Loftus Road. Fulham started brightly and had a legitimate penalty shout when Sol Campbell flattened Luis Boa Morte in the box. But the ref waved play on.
Henry and Ljungberg both had good chances thwarted by Edwin van der Sar but Fulham were far from rolling over having a number of good chances themselves.
But all van der Sar ‘s good work was undone in the 31 minute when Steve Marlet converted a tame corner from Thierry Henry into his own net as his team mates looked on in horror.
In the second Arsenal started to turn up the heat but lacked a ruthlessness in front of goal. Thankfully Fulham also were impotent and Arsenal held on for their first clean sheet for a month.

01/11/02-Ray On The Bad Run

Here is Ray's views on Arsenals bout of losses from his Islington Gazette column-
"We really wanted to bounce back from defeats against Auxerre and Everton with a good result against Blackburn on Saturday, so to loose again was massively disappointing.
"It seems that all our bad luck has come at once because we made so many chances on Saturday but it was just one of those days in front of goal.
"Edu’s own goal was yet another freak goal to concede and I think Blackburn scored more goals than they had shots on target which has to be a first!
"You have to give credit to Blackburn though as they defended really well and Brad Friedel was in superb form, but with they amount of chances we created we should have never have drawn that match let alone lost it.
"Now we just have to make sure we don’t start trying to change too much-a couple of weeks ago everybody was saying we were one of the best teams ever-and you just don’t loose that over night.
"We have lost a few games which was inevitable really considering the kind of run we have been on and now we have to get back on track as soon as we can. The way Liverpool are going at the moment we know we can’t afford to loose too many more games, but there is a long way to go and this time last season we had four points less than we do now."

01/11/02-Ray:-No Excuses

Ray has given a spirited cry to inspire The Gunners to get it right this Sunday against Fulham-
“Fulham have lost a couple of games in a row but before that they were on great form and unbeaten at home” ,Ray said in his column. “Like us they have been in action away in Europe this week and we can have no excuses-loosing games isn’t something anybody at this club likes and we have to put this right on Sunday.”

01/11/02-Ray Looses His Wisdom

Some good news. The much missed Ray Parlour should be back in action very soon. Unfortunately the Sunday game with Fulham might be a little too soon-
“I had to miss out on the trip to Germany this week as my knee injury has still not cleared up-but the good news is I am hoping to be involved in the first team again soon.”
Ray said in his Islington gazette column.
Ray also reveals he has just had his wisdom teeth removed- “I also had my wisdom teeth out on Tuesday which was almost as painful as watching the boys loose three games in a row!”
“I have an outside chance of coming back at Fulham on Sunday, otherwise the Worthington Cup match next week could be a good opportunity to make my comeback.”

30/10/02-2-1 Loss Again In Dortmund

I will make this one brief. Arsenal continued their appalling October run with a poor performance away to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
Ray was still missing, yet to recover from his tendonitus , and it has to be said we are sorely missing him.
The warning signs started early on when Dortmund his the post twice. But Arsenal were the ones to take the lead when Ljungberg got a rather controversial free kick which Henry scored from. Dortmund equalised towards the end of the first half when a Rosicky free kick deflected off Gilberto into the net.
I the second half Dortmund were given a penalty when Koller duped the Ref with a Klinsmanesque dive. Rosicky converted the penalty, Seaman had no chance.
So another 2-1 loss. In the last few results we could say that Arsenal played well enough and were unlucky to loose but it has be said to Arsenal were pretty poor in this game and although Dortmund probably cheated to get the winning goal we rally have to start doing better before the rot sets in.

29/10/02-Blip Turns To Blotch

Another day another defeat. A Ray Parlour-less Arsenal lost again, this time at home to Blackburn Rovers. Edu continued his fine (own)goal scoring form with a deft sliced lob over Seaman after only 6 minutes. Attempts were made by various media to blame Seaman for this goal but one has to wonder how he could have prevented it?
Arsenal pummeled the Blackburn goal and got their reward with seconds remaining in the first half. A freekick by Edu sneaking in at Friedel's near post. Strangely no analysis of that goal in terms of a keeper blunder. Had it been the other end one suspects that would not have been the case.
The second half began disastrously for the Gunners, Blackburn going ahead almost instantly. A slick move culminated in a Dwight Yorke blinding Seaman with his pearly white grin and tapping in. Arsenal rallied, brought on Pires and Bergkamp, bombarded the Blackburn goal, but failed to score.
It finished 1 - 2 to Blackburn and Arsenal lose 3 on the bounce. Their 23 shots to Rovers' 3 tells a story though. On another day they would have won 5 - 2 and their manager Souness was gracious enough to say as much after the game. Friedel was inspired and luck was against us. I has to be said that without Vieira the midfield looked a little lightweight and lacking in someone to get their foot in and challenge, ( I think you know where I'm going with this). Seriously though we were crying out for a Parlour-type player to get in there and get stuck in.
On another note, it's interesting to see who gets the blame for the Rovers' goals. Seaman, (too old), Sol (no leadership), Lauren ,(out of position) and Cole, (can't defend), have all been accused by various media. The fact that the guilty party varies so much would imply to me that no individual was solely to blame. Our defence is a unit that lives and dies together. Maybe, just maybe, the goals were caused by the opposition playing good football? An explanation that some commentators seem loathe to apply to any goal conceded by us at the moment.

29/10/02-Ray Goal Video, Now On!

I’ve just added the mpeg video of Ray’s F.A Cup final Goalagainst Chelsea to the F.A Cup Special page. Now you relive that terrific moment again and again.

25/10/02-Ray Out For Blackburn

Ray will not feature in Saturday’s game at home to Blackburn. Here is his preview from his Islington Gazette column-
“Saturday shows everybody that we have a battle on are hands whoever we play this season.
And Blackburn this weekend won’t be any different to that.”
“They nicked a draw at Highbury last year and I thought at the start of the season that they could be the ones to watch.
“They have a lot of good young players but hopefully we will bounce back and start another long unbeaten run again on Saturday.
”Unfortunately once again I don’t think I will be involved-the tendonitis in my left leg hasn’t gone yet and I am still a week away from full fitness.”

25/10/02-Ray Talks Scouse

Ray has given his views on the Everton loss in his Islington Gazette column and his thoughts on Arsenal’s main title challengers, Liverpool-
“Make no mistake it was disappointing to lose our unbeaten record on Saturday-but at the same time we all knew it would end somewhere.
“The Premiership is such a tough league that you don’t get any easy matches anymore and Everton showed that on Saturday.
“Having said that I thought we were quite unlucky to lose-we had some good chances to win it and then they go and score a goal like that in the last minute. “Wayne Rooney has certainly hit the headlines this week and he does look like he has what it takes to go all the way from what I’ve seen of him.
“He looked good when he went to Old Trafford the other week as well an Everton are going to look after him properly which is the right thing to do.
“It is difficult when you are a teenager and one minute you are kicking a ball around with you mates and then the next you are on TV and in the papers playing for a top club.
“Everton look like they could be on the way back to being a force again like they were back in the Eighties. David Moyles is proving to be a good manager and looks like take them in the right direction.
“I think Goodison will be a tough place to go for everybody this season.
“Liverpool have taken over at the top from us and they look like they will challenge us all the way for the title this season.
“Gerard Houllier has assembled a strong squad up there this season and they seem to have perfected the art of grinding out results-they remind me a bit of how we used to play in the 1990’s.
“They did it again at Leeds on Saturday-defending really well and then nicked a goal and won the match.
“But you get the same three points for winning 1-0 as you do winning 4-1, it doesn’t make any difference.”

24/10/02-French Resistance

An extremely lacklustre Arsenal committed Hari Kiri against an enthusiastic yet not particularly gifted Auxerre team. Ray didn't play, the tendonitis in his left leg still troubling him. Auxerre's first goal on 6 minutes, again left question marks over Seaman's ability to move. A highly speculative shot from well outside the box beating him at the far post despite him belatedly getting a hand to it. In fairness he may have been unsighted. The second on 27 minutes was the result of some comedy defending with the Auxerre striker nipping in between 'Keeper and defense after a fine block tackle by Cole resulted in the ball looping back towards the goal. A cultured finish by Senegalese star Fadiga, flicking the ball over the despairing pensioner.
In fairness to the Gunners they had several excellent chances in between the two goals, notably Kanu with a couple of blistering drives from the edge of the box but luck was against them.
The midfield squandered possession relentlessly, Cole and Lauren both looked nervous and Seaman is heading the way of exSperz "defender" Gundi Bergson, (see Bolton report). His confidence is in tatters, every goal scored against us analysed by both TV viewers and supporters in the ground for confirmation of his culpability.
Arsenal rallied a little in the 2nd half and pulled one back through a Kanu tap in on 53 minutes from an Henry cross. The crowd woke up, the North Bank having been shamefully silent for the preceding 52 minutes and a comeback looked on the cards. Unfortunately Auxerre weathered the storm and might have increased their lead were it not for an excellent close range save by Seaman after an "air-clearance" by Ashley Cole had gifted their strikers a gilt edged chance.
Despite some desperate pressure from the Arsenal and the introduction of Pires for the last 20 minutes the Gunners couldn't score and the referee blew the final whistle with the scores Arsenal 1 - Auxerre 2.
Overall a highly disappointing night for Arsenal fans, not just because they lost but also because of the manner of the defeat. The football played was unimaginative, consisting mostly of long balls up to Kanu and the general standard was sloppy in the extreme. We started badly and got worse. Maybe, just maybe, this was the kick up the arse we need. Our midfield was powderpuff with Vieira subdued except for a brief spell early in the second half and Silva having possibly his poorest game yet in an Arsenal shirt. We were crying out for a player to get stuck in in the middle of the park and Ray could and would have done just that.
Arsenal stay top of the group on 9 points, still needing just a draw from the last two games to qualify. However based on that performance it would be a brave man to put his money on them doing it.
Report-Peter Krige
21/10/02-Toffies Get Stuck In To Gunners (or something..)

Well, it was bound to happen eventually- Arsenal crashed to their first defeat in over seven months at Everton. It all started so well when after 8 minutes when Kolo Toure knocked the ball across to Freddie Ljungberg poked it past Richard Wright. Tomas Radzinski equalised half way trough the first half and then in the last 10 minutes 16 year old Wayne Rooney won the game 2-1 with a brilliant strike . Rooney could have made it 3-1 when in injury time he chipped Seaman. Ray didn’t play having still not recovered the tendonitis that has been troubling him and it has to be said that this was the kind of game we really needed a player with his qualities.

18/10/02-Sticky Sweet Reunion For Foxy Franny

It’s Everton time again , the time when I have to make up stupid puns about sticky sweets.
In his Islington Gazette column, Ray spoke about the build up to Saturdays game and his views on former Evertonian Francis Jaffers-
“It was good to see Franny Jeffers get a couple of goals for the under 21’s at the weekend and I am sure he is looking forward to going back to his old club Everton on Saturday.
“He has had a difficult time with injury and I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet.
“He is a natural goalscorer and if he can stay fit I think he will be successful for the club. Luckily he has youth on his side though and has plenty of time to prove himself.
“It will be a tough game up there but we have to hope our great away form continues.
“A lot of players will only report back today ( Thursday) and have a warm down to check for injuries and then it will be just one days training tomorrow to prepare for the game on Saturday .
“It’s not ideal but the international players are used to it and I’m sure they will be ready for whatever Everton have to throw at us on Saturday.”

17/10/02-Ray Unlikely For Toffies

Some interesting injury news in Ray’s Islington Gazette Column this week-
“With the England boys and all the other internationals away it’s been a quiet week at the training ground for those of us who are left –and unfortunately I have had to spend most of it in the gym,” Ray said .“My injury is getting better though but there was some damage to the tendon in my left leg and I haven’t been able to train on it in the past week.
“I need three days out on the training pitch before I come back so at the moment I don’t think I‘ll be in the frame for Saturday.
“Martin Keown has also been on his way back from a hamstring knock but Saturday might be too soon for both of us.
“Good news though is that Dennis Bergkamp has been training and could be back in contention for Saturday.
“And Robert Pires had a run out for the reserves in a friendly on Tuesday-that is his first competitive action and is a big step for him in his comeback trail.”

17/10/02-Ray's Rage At Racists

Ray has given his views on the racial abuse black players have experienced around Europe in the past few weeks-
“Nobody likes to hear the kind of treatment that Ashley Cole and Emil Heskey got playing for England at the weekend, “ he said in his Islington Gazette column. “We have had some bad experiences in Europe over the years but it seems things just haven’t changed like they have in this country.
"Now something will have to be done to stop these idiots who are still using racist abuse. "We spoke about it a bit when Thierry was targeted in Holland and that was bad-but this seemed much worse.
"I thought Ashley did really well and didn’t let it put him off his game which is all you can do in that situation.
“Footballers don’t mind be criticised for what they do on the pitch because you expect that but when it spreads beyond that you just can’t accept it.
"Things have changed a lot in this country even since I started out at the end of the 80’s and now it has to happen else where too.”

11/10/02-Ray Happy With Great Start

Ray has expressed his happiness at Arsenal current form but is aware of the dangers of complacency-
“I don’t think we could have asked for a better start to the season heading into the international break this week.
We are unbeaten , top of the Premiership and also have a 100 per cent record in the Champions League so we are well pleased with the way things have gone so far.
“It was especially pleasing to win on Sunday after yet another hard trip in the Champions League last week . Suddenly we can do no wrong away from home in Europe and that is something we have we as a squad have worked very hard on.
“We know we had the talent to do well away from home and we felt we were a little unlucky at times last season-but the belief we have of ourselves is now so strong that we go into every game thinking we can win no matter where we are playing.
“The important thing is not to get carried away-there are only nine games gone in the league and good starts don’t mean anything unless you keep going all season.
“We know we have some tough tests to come in the next few months and won’t be sitting back thinking we are Champions again already-Liverpool are only two points behind us.”

11/10/02-Cheer Up Peter Reid-Ray Likes You!

Here’s Ray’s thoughts on last Sundays win against Sunderland and his thoughts on Peter Reid’s sacking from his Islington Gazette column-
“It was important to get that win on Sunday to finish on a high and now hopefully by the time we return to action we will have a full squad to choose from –including me!
“Once again it was a pleasure to watch on Sunday-the match was really over in side those first 10 minutes.
“It was tough on Sunderland and I was very sorry to see Peter Reid get the sack earlier this week.
“He was a great player in his day and has been a good manager up there too. Steve Bould went up there from Arsenal and spoke very highly of the way Peter was doing things and of the set-up at the club, a lot of which was down to the manager.
“But that’s the way it goes in football these days-the results are what counts and unfortunately losing to us was the final nail in his coffin.”

11/10/02-Ray On His Fitness Battle

Ray has spoken about the frustrations of the injury which has kept him out for the past few weeks-
“My injury has been a bit problematic in that the original knee injury has now affected my hamstring in my left leg and I have missed a lot more games than I thought I would.”He said in his Islington Gazette column, “The international break does give those of us who are injured some extra time to recover though and it nice to have company for a change.
Martin Keown , Dennis Bergkamp , Robert Pires and myself are all working hard to get back later this month and the next week will give us a good chance to do that.”

11/10/02-"Model" Banned After Ray "Bust Up"

The Suns show businesses column “Bizarre” has a good Ray linked story today-
BALLOON-boobed ALICIA DOUVALL has been barred from London club China White if Arsenal footballers are there.
The 30GG blonde says she was banned after a bust-up with midfielder RAY PARLOUR.
Alicia told me: “I’m barred because of my fight with Ray. At first I was totally banned but now doormen will let me inside as long as Arsenal players are not there.”
-See our News Archive from 10/05/02 for more details on that “bust up” .

07/10/02-Arsenal Maul Black Cats

Ray’s injury ravaged season kept him out yet again as Arsenal kept up their record breaking run with a 3-1 win against Sunderland. As a contest the game was over in the first 10 minutes with Kanu , continuing his fine form in the absence of Dennis Bergkamp, putting Arsenal two up. The first came after 3 minutes when from a corner Henry swung the ball in to be kept out by Sunderland keeper Sorensen, the ball fell to Kanu in the box , who made no mistakes, prodding it into the net. The second came in the 9th minute when from a series of good passes Ashley Cole on left the corner of the box chipped it to the lanky Nigerian who headed into the goal with some venom. Sorenson was then stretchered off with dislocated elbow after landing awkwardly intercepting Henry going up for a Kanu cross . This meant that there was five minutes injury time, in which Vieira scored with his head after Wiltord’s free kick was saved by Sorensens's replacement, Myrhe. In the second half, knowing the game was certainly won, Arsenal took their foot of the peddle. Wenger took of Wiltord, Henry and Ljungberg and bought on Jeffers, Toure and Edu. Peter Reid put on former Arsenal favourite big Niall Quinn for Tore Andre Flo and soon after Sunderland got their consolation with Jody Craddock heading in from a Kevin Kilbane cross. All in all Arsenal did enough. They could have inflicted far more misery to Sunderland but with three points almost a cert after the first ten minutes it was probably far more sensible to conserve energy for a later date. Pascal Cygan had another excellent game , Wenger seems to have found another bargain there. Is it because he has no hair, but to me he has more than a passing resemblance to Uncle Stevie Bould.

05/10/02 –Silva Service

Arsenal made it 3 wins out of 3 so far in the Champions League, with a fine, controlled performance away at Auxerre. With Ray Parlour still injured, Wenger stuck with the same team as last Saturday. Whilst never rerally hitting the heights of that demolition of Leeds, the Gunners contained a technically skilled Auxerre side, restricting them for the most part to hopeful shots from 30-plus yards.
Arsenal's goal came just after the half time break, a slick move involving Toure crossing from the left, the ball helped on by Wiltord and Gilberto arriving late in the box to thump home unmarked.
Shortly after this Henry limped off clutching his hamstring. Latest news has him at 50 - 50 for the weekend fixture at Sunderland. Auxerre upped their game and committed more men to the attack, but they continually came up against a wall of blue. Vieira and Gilberto combined well to protect the back 4 and when called upon Sol and Cygan were rock solid. Martin Keown is going to have his work cut out to dislodge Cygan, a player who unbelievably cost about the same as Man United paid for Rio Ferdinand's left foot. Gilberto's understanding with Vieira is getting better with every match and his knack of making the right run at the right time into the box is resulting in a healthy share of goals for the Brazilian World Cup winner and £4.5 million bargain buy.
Seaman , a virtual spectator for 85 minutes, was forced into an excellent fingertip save from a pile driver shot from the edge of the box, although in reality The Arsenal never really looked like conceding.
So a highly satisfying away win for the Gunners, leaving them top of the group on a maximum 9 points and yet to concede a goal.
Report-Peter Krige

02/10/02 –Still No Ray

Ray has not recovered from his hamstring injury and didn’t make the trip for tonight’s game against Auxerre. Dennis Bergkamp and Martin Keown are also out although Edu returns.

30/09/02 –Young Lads Demolished

Showing no sign of missing Ray Parlour who was out with a slight injury, Arsenal finally hit top gear on Saturday against Leeds, albeit for 20 minutes. Elland Road was crammed for this noon kickoff with the home side presumably hopeful of denying the Arsenal their chance to enter the record books by scoring in their 47th consecutive League game. With barely nine minutes on the clock, Ashley Cole robbed Kelly near the halfway line and fed Toure on the edge of the box. He beat his man and squared for the giraffe in the box, Kanu, to tap in.
10 minutes later and Wiltord strolled through the Leeds defence and cut back the ball for an unmarked Toure to head home from 6 yards. 2 - 0 and Arsenal were in complete and total control. David O'Leary's expensively assembled squad, packed full of International players were completely clueless and "tactical genius" and current manager Terry Venables had no answer to the domination of the boys in blue.

stick that up your arse,ugly
Leeds therefore resorted to their favourite game of hack and moan as a succession of players names found their way into the referees book. "Young Kid" Alan Smith attempted to remove Kolo Toure's legs from the rest of his body and was quite rightly booked. Interestingly, one can only assume that Paddy Vieira's forthcoming charge from the FA is for accusing referee Andy D'Urso of having no personality, since Smith repeatedly told the referee to "f**k off" and was not punished for it.
By now Elland road was reduced to the atmosphere of a preseason friendly, save for the Arsenal fans at one end who were making the most of their teams total dominance. Half-time couldn't come quickly enough for the home side and their most impressive move of the half was the way in which they all legged it to the safety of the dressing room before the referee had finished blowing his whistle.
During the interval Venables worked the kind of magic which so inspired his Sperz team whilst he was in charge there. 2 minutes into the second half and Henry raced onto a beautiful through ball from Kanu, accelerated away from a sluggish Radebe, rounded the keeper and slotted home. 3 -0 and the ground began to empty.
Pascal Cygan, making his first Premiership start in place of the injured Keown did his best to spark Leeds into life by firmly planting a boot in Bower's throat. Bowyer complained and ranted like a lunatic and then tried to shatter Cygan's knee in an horrific over the top challenge. The inevitable booking for that nice Lee Bowyer resulted in the inevitable moaning and gathering of Leeds players around the ref, although presumably none of them accused him of having "no personality".
Arsenal were by now taking the p**s completely and relaxed to such a degree that Leeds finally began to look vaguely decent. Smith hit the bar after attempting to pick a fight with Lauren and Leeds eventually scored after Seaman saved twice to deny that nice Lee Bowyer, Kewell hammering home the rebound.
This roused Arsenal who scored again, substitute Pennant threading through a wonderful pass for Kanu to finish with ease.
4 -1 and Arsenal stroll to yet another Premier League victory.
Special Mention 1. Man of the Match has to be the whole team since they were all magnificent, but the way Kanu responded to the criticism of last week was superb. He had an excellent game and scored two fine goals.
Special Mention 2. The Middlesborough fans upon going 3 - 0 up at *hite Hart Lane later in the day, responded by taunting the home support with chants of "It's just like watching Arsenal" - Nice.

28/09/02 –Premiership Focus

We now have a new site called Premiership Focus, which you can get to using the link above the news. If you remember Toshtalk from the Grimster site. it’s along the same lines. It includes highly objective news, features and celebrity guest columnists. For starters we have managed to sign David O’ Leary and Lawro to both do objective columns on the Premeirship. More to come.

27/09/02 –No Leeds For RAY?

It looks like Ray will miss the Leeds game. Ray is to have a late test on his inflamed hamstring but it seems unlikely Wenger would risk him.

27/09/02 –Ray’s A Tweaky Git

Bigie,bigie,bigie..Hello Buck-it's tweaky
Bolton's Ivan Campo has been let off his second yellow card , avoiding a suspension. The BBC reports that “Campo threw the ball away as Arsenal were trying to line up a free-kick following an incident involving Gunners midfielder Ray Parlour.” As we exclusively revealed in our match report ,Ray was seen to tweak the Spaniards ear. Despite this, Campo’s reaction of throwing the ball away did seem to constitute a second yellow. But the F.A revealed -"We can confirm that following the sending off, referee David Pugh has informed the Football Association that, having viewed a video of the incident, he now wishes to withdraw the second booking. Therefore, only the first caution for dissent will be recorded against the player and he will not be required to serve a suspension."
So yet again a player sent off while playing against Arsenal has been let off. Funny it doesn’t seem to work that way when it is an Arsenal player who is on the receiving end off a questionable booking????????

27/09/02 –Ray’s Preview Of El Tel’s Young Lads

Here’s Rays views on Saturday’s game against Leeds taken from his Islington Gazette column-
“We know we are in for a big test at Elland Road on Saturday but after the start we’ve have made to this season we are all feeling confident about going up there. Leeds is a tough place to go and we haven’t won there for a couple of years., they have had a bit of a stop start season so far but taking on the champions at home is bound to get them fired up.
“Terry Venables is a manager players have a lot of respect for and should be able to get the best from a Leeds squad that has a lot of quality in it.
“When you have been unbeaten away for as long as we have then people start trying to pinpoint when you will slip up-but we will be approaching this game the same as all the others this year.
“The fact we have been busy in Europe this week doesn’t make a difference-although we have three away games in a week we have a big enough squad to cope with it and if needs be players who are fresh can come in.
“Leeds have beaten Manchester United at home already this season and so cannot be underrated but if we keep playing this way we know we can keep our unbeaten run going.”

26/09/02 –P.S.V (Perfect, Superb, Victorious)

Despite missing the Romford Pele Arsenal put their European away days blues with fantastic 4-0 spannering of PSV Eindhoven. Gilberto Silva scored after just 21 seconds, recording the fastest ever goal in Champions League history (beating Alessandro del Piero's strike against Manchester United in 1997) . Soon after Martin Keown pulled his hamstring and had to replaced by new boy Pascal Cygan. PSV started turning up the heat but Arsenal stood firm, defending well. In the second half in was Arsenal who turned the heat up , counter attacking brilliantly. In the 65th minute a Lauren pass was latched on to by Freddie Ljungberg , who scored from an acute angle.PSV then had a goal unfairly disallowed and their confidence seemed to drain from them whilst Arsenal’s grew and grew. Kanu replaced Bergkamp on 78 minutes and from his first contribution fed Henry to make it 3-0. Right a the end sped through making it 4-0. Pascal Cygan seemed to fit in very well although Leeds vicious young brutes will be a harder test for him. PSV midfielder Mark van Bommel was and Arsenal summer target ( we bought record breaking Gilberto Silva instead for half the price-he, he) and before the game revealed how he snubbed the Gunners to stay at PSV. He must felt a bit of a prat afterwards.

25/09/02 –Romford Raymond Injured Again

Ray did not travel to Holland for tonight’s Champions League game with PSV Eindhoven as he has an inflamed hamstring. Wenger has said it is not serious and The Romford Pele could return for this Saturdays match against The Dirty Young Lads ( they are also know to a few people as Leeds by the way ).

23/09/02 –New Ray Interview

There is a new Ray interview on Arsenal.com here's the jist of it-
"Last season in the league we did fantastically away from home and it has been the same this season," he told Arsenal Clubline.
"In Europe we have to get it into our brains that we have to treat it as a normal championship game.
"It's sometimes tough with the intimidating atmosphere we play in. But we have to block that out of our minds and play football. If we can do that we won’t have a problem."
Parlour acknowledges that our superb displays at Highbury have been undermined by a lack of success on the road, but he insists that the problem can be resolved.
"The away form let us down last season definitely and if we can improve on that then we’ll have a chance of progressing in the tournament," he said.
Our England midfielder also echoed the sentiments of Arsene Wenger by claiming that this is the best chance the Club have had to bring the Champions League trophy to Highbury.
"I would have said that last year as well," he admits. "It's one of those situations where you just have to take each game at a time.
"We've started well, its vital that we got three points on the board against Dortmund. Now we've got a big away game against Eindhoven and if we can get some sort of result out there we'll be set up nicely in the group."
And after clinching the Premiership trophy at Old Trafford in May, Ray is already dreaming of being crowned kings of Europe on the same ground a year later.
"Arsenal are one of the top teams in the world and you can visualise doing that," he said.
"We've definitely got the players to do it so hopefully come May we can. There's a lot of hard work to get through before that day, but with the team spirit and the unity we have in the side there's no reason why it can't happen."

23/09/02 –Battle Of Perms

It was battle of the bubble perms at Highbury on Saturday as Ray returned to the starting lineup for the first time since being subbed at West Ham on the 24th of August. He lined up against the similarly coiffed Ivan Campo and showed no signs of the injury which had kept him out of first team action for nearly a month.
uuuuuuuuu
Arsenal started well, with Henry holding off the ex-Sperz "defender"Gundi Bergson to fire just wide from an acute angle. A clearly rattled Bergson then tugged back Ljungberg who'd broken through and the referee pointed straight to the spot. Henry stepped up and hit his shot hard but it rebounded off the post.
On 26 minutes, a by now shell shocked Bergson was again outmuscled by Henry, ending up on his backside as Thierry rounded the keeper and slotted home.
Whilst all this was going on, Ray Poodle Parlour was quietly getting on with winning his battle against the terrier Campos and the rest of the Bolton midfield, spraying around crossfield passes and getting in the tackles. Campos' frustrations got the better of him and he was booked for moaning after being dispossessed by the man from Romford.
In the 2nd half Bolton equalised through (yet another) freak goal against Dave Seaman, Farrelly's cross clearly deflecting off Ray's boot and looping over Seaman's head.
Arsenal threw everyone forward in search of the winner but couldn't seem to find their rhythm despite the prompting of Ray from his central midfield position.
Wenger brought on Bergkamp and Jeffers for Freddie and Wiltord and with his first touch Dennis sent Henry clean through to score, the goal ruled out for a highly dubious off side.
Campos was fouled again and this time threw the ball away in disgust. Ray added injury to insult by gently tugging his hair, presumably to check it was real and not a novelty 70's wig. 2nd yellow for Campos and Bolton were down to 10 men.
Arsenal piled forward and in the 4th minute of stoppage time a cross into the box was headed down by Henry and Kanu silenced the Highbury boo-boys who'd been jeering him since the first minute by rifling home, after Bergson had obligingly stood and watched the ball bounce in the 6 yard box.
2 - 1 to the Arsenal and a fine performance from Ray who worked his socks off as ever but added an excellent range of passing as well as linking up play from the back. The Bolton fans were understandably disappointed - winning at Old Trafford as they did last week is one thing, but to get out of Highbury with a point would have been the highlight of their season. Gundi Bergson was seen leaving the Stadium in an ambulance, shaking and muttering to himself.

20/09/02 –Ray's Bolton Preview

Here’s Rays thoughts about the Bolton game-
“Bolton will be tough on Saturday-they nicked a draw against us last season and seeing as their last away match was a 1-0 win at Old Trafford they will be full of confidence.” Ray said in his column, “But we are no short of that either at the moment!”

20/09/02 –Ray Back For Bolton

Good news. Arsenal.com have announced that Ray will be fit to face Bolton on Saturday.
Wenger said:- "Edu is still short of fitness but Ray Parlour will be back in contention for a place in the side."
He added: "With Patrick Vieira suspended we have quite a need in the middle of the park."

20/09/02 –Bobby’s Back (Soon )

Ray has news of Robert Pires’ recovery in his Islington Gazette column-
“ I was training with Robert Pires earlier this week and he looks really sharp again –he’s still a few weeks away from a comeback but to get back from a cruciate injury is good going and he looks to have made a good recovery.”

19/09/02 –Paddy Ain’t Knackered

Ray has given his opinion on reports in the press saying that Patrick Vieira has expressed a need for rest-
”I think Patrick Vieira must have been misquoted last week saying he wanted a rest because I know Patrick and he always wants to play football. “ Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column , “If you are loosing a few games and are stuck at the bottom then it6 can be the case that players want a rest some times but when you are flying like we are , then playing the matches is what you want to do no matter what competition they are in.
"Patrick has no choice but to sit out Saturday’s game with Bolton as he is suspended –although coming between two big European games that might be a benefit in the end.
“He is a very important player for us as he showed last Saturday when another great performance saw us win away again.”

19/09/02 –Ray Back Soon

Good news on Ray’s injury front. He has revealed in his Islington Gazette column that he is returning to full training today-
“I am hopefully going to be back in full training with the boys today and although Saturdays match might be too soon for me , I am hoping to be able to be available to the manager next weeks trip to PSV.” Ray said. “Being injured is tough at the moment because confidence is high around the club and everybody just wants to play in every game.”

18/09/02 –Freddie's Ready

aw,bless
Firstly, with Ray still injured the news page has been lacking some pretty pictures to brighten it up. So I chose these two which I like a lot .
Freddie Ljungberg marked his return from injury the way he left off, with a goal as Arsenal transferred impressive form into Europe. Dortmund were well organised and it took till the second half for Arsenal to break them down, when in the 62nd minute Bergkamp's deflected shot beat keeper Lehmann. In the 77th minute after thwarting a Dortmund attack Seaman threw the ball to Wiltord as he bombed it along the wing . Sylvan neatly passed to Henry who cleverly avoiding the off-side trap, rolled the ball towards Ljungberg who when round the oncoming keeper and knocking it into the net.
Overall a solid performance in which Arsenal did enough but you still feel they have yet to step up a gear-god help everyone when they do!

17/09/02 –Ray Out For Dortmund

Ray has not recovered from his knee injury and will miss tonight’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

17/09/02 –Ray's Dortmund Preview

Here’s Ray’s views on tonight’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.
“That’s going to be a massive game –your home games are so important in the group phases. We only lost one last year to Deportivo La Coruna and won all the rest but that loss was enough to knock us out.
“German sides are always well prepared in Europe and some people seem to be treating Borussia Dortmund lightly –I can assure you we won’t be.”

16/09/02 –Addickted To Goals

Red hot Arsenal broke more records beating Charlton Athletic 3-0 at the Valley( scoring in 45 consecutive games) .Ray missed out again when he failed to recover from his knee injury, but this did not stop The Gunners steam rolling the Addicks with relative ease. It looked to be a frustrating afternoon though when in the first half as Arsenal found it hard to break through a well organised Charlton side. But the break through came just before half time when Vieira set up Henry who scored yet another Classic. In the second half Arsenal were in full control , Wiltord made it 2-0 and towards the end , Edu headed in the third from a Henry cross. Last season after their fluky victory at Highbury, Charlton released a video entitled “Black Sabbath”. It seems unlikely that we will see Arsenal releasing a similar video ( “Blue Saturday”??) as we have bigger fish to fry.

13/09/02 –Ray To Miss Addicks Game

It looks like Ray is fighting a loosing battle to get fit for Saturdays Charlton game. The BBC reports that he will miss the game along with Lauren. Ray has a knee complaint he picked up at the Chelsea game (being kicked one time too many by Graeme Le Saux, no doubt).

13/09/02 –Ray’s Valley Preview

Here’s Ray’s Views on this Saturday opponents Charlton -
“It’s the Valley on Saturday and it’s always a tough little place to go to-as we know loosing 1-0 the year before last.” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column , “Charlton don’t have a lot of big international stars but what they do have is a very good team spirit and they are always hard to play against.
“Everyone will remember them beating us 4-2 at Highbury last season and in a way that game woke us a bit-we only lost one game after that.”

12/09/02 –Ray Interview

Here is an interview with Ray taken from the program from the Manchester City game-

Ray, you must be pleased with the point earned at Chelsea last Sunday, especially as we played for more than half an hour with ten men.

Yeah, I think it was a good all round performance and it showed the spirit we've got here. To be honest we thought we were a little bit hard done by to be 1-0 down at half-time. We played well for the first 25 minutes, and then they scored, but we always knew we could get back in the game. After Patrick's sending off we dug in well, got the goal, and then stayed strong to earn a point.

Was the team spurred on even more by Patrick's sending off?

It was one of those situations where some of the players didn't know what happened. I was over the other side of the pitch so I couldn't see it. People were saying that it wasn't a sending off but I couldn't tell at the time.
It's only afterwards when you look at the video that you can see that it wasn't, in my opinion, a sending off. But during the game you don't know that so you get on with it. We were always going to be up against it after that, Chelsea is not an easy place to go so really you need all your players. But the lads were determined not to lose the game. I moved inside a bit more, Kolo was on at that stage and with Gilberto we played three in the middle. We were never going to give up.
I think in the end it was a great point for us because Chelsea is a tough place to go. But we have got a good record there so that stood us in good stead.

Did the unbeaten away record act as an extra incentive?

I don't think the lads really think about it. It's great to set records but really you have to take it one game at a time. Going into the Chelsea game we were not thinking about the record, we were thinking about winning the game.
But saying that, there is a lot of confidence in the team at the moment, we've got a lot of good players so there's no reason why we can't keep the run going - we have shown that we are mentally strong away. We know we can improve away in Europe and if we can do that we'll have a fantastic team.

The previous time you played Chelsea you scored one of the great all-time F.A. Cup Final goals. Have you had a chance to relive that much during the summer?

Not really, but I've seen it now and again. But for me it was one of those goals you dream of - right in the top corner. Also it came at a good time, Chelsea were probably on top of us and that goal really took the wind out of them.
But it was a good goal and to score in the F.A. Cup Final is great for me, I was really pleased after the game - it was just a great day. I've been watching F.A. Cup Finals since I was a kid and to score a good quality goal in the Final is right up there with winning doubles and playing for England. It is certainly one of the highlights of my career.

You mention England Ray and you won your first cap for for country when the manager of today's visitors, Kevin Keegan, took over. What was it like playing under him?

When I was with him at England, I thought it was a great set up. All the lads had a lot of respect for Kevin which I think is important for a manager. It was in his heart and when he felt things weren't going right he was brave to say that managing England was not for him.
As you can see in his Manchester City team, he's very attack minded. He loves going forward, passing and creating opportunities, which will make it a tough game for us. I watched their game against Leeds, and although they lost 3-0, I thought they were very unlucky, and probably had more chances.

Not many teams come to Highbury with an attacking mentality, but is that what you are expecting from City tonight?

I think that's the way they play. They are an attacking team and will be so wherever they play. But that could be a plus point for us, hopefully it will be an open and exciting game. Sometimes it can be difficult when teams come here and put a lot of men behind the ball, then it's important to get an early goal.
I think we've started well this season, and managed to carry on where we ended last year. Basically I think it's important that we haven't lost yet, and hopefully we can carry that on for as long as we can. We've got players coming back from injury and once everybody's fit I think we'll have a very good chance again this season.

Finally, you made your Arsenal debut in 1992, you must be due a testimonial now?

Yeah I've been a here quite a while now, so hopefully we'll be able to get something sorted out towards the end of the season. The Club has certainly changed a lot during my time here. It's been unbelievable. The training facilities have completely changed and I've seen a lot of players come and go through the years. I've been here since I was 12 years old, and we've come on in leaps and bounds and the expectations are certainly a lot higher than ten years ago. But it's all been change for the better.

12/09/02 –Ray’s Fitness Battle

Ray has revealed more about the injury that kept him out of the City game.
“I picked up a bit of a knock in the second half at Chelsea the other week and the last 20 minutes when we had to play with ten me was pretty painful.” Ray disclosed in his Islington Gazette Column ,“I thought it would go away with the week’s break but I trained on it and it probably got worse so I didn’t feel right for the City match .
“Now I am facing a battle to be Ok for Saturday’s match at Charlton- I am hoping that a few more days rest will do the trick, although I should definitely be available for the Champions League opener with Dortmund next week.”

11/09/02 –Arsenal Just Love It!

As reported Ray missed out on the Manchester City game due to a knee injury ,but Arsenal were still victorious, winning 2-1. Wiltord opened the scoring on 26 minutes. Minutes later, much loved former Arsenal favourite Nic Anelka headed in the equaliser when Keown made a uncharacteristic mistake. At the end of the first half Ashley Cole set up Henry who sent a low ball swerving past Schmeichel into the net. The second half was somewhat disappointing compared to the first ,with both teams forgetting how to pass to each other.

10/09/02 –Ray's City Preview

Ray is out with a knee injury for tonight’s game against Manchester City. Ray has given his views on Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan in his Islington Gazette column.
“Keegan was a great manager to play for when he was England boss a few years ago and is a man I have a lot of respect for.”
“He’s made some good signing up there, especially in midfield, and they are a side who love to come and attack you, so we will have to be ready.
“We have been on great form at Highbury so far this season though –so hope fully we can carry that on and make sure Spurs aren’t to of the table for much longer!”

6/09/02 –Ray's Chelsea Review

Ray has given his impressions on the Chelsea game in his Islington Gazette Column . “There is no doubt in my mind that Patrick Vieira has been unlucky this week not to have his red card from Sunday’s match taken away,” Ray said. “We all thought it was harsh at the time and the fact Jasper Gronkjaer came out and said publicly that he kicked the bottom of Patrick’s foot and that it was an accident hasn’t made any difference. It seems like there is a lot of inconsistency when one week a Birmingham player gets let off a second yellow card for a similar offence against us, and yet Patrick is told his sending off will stand.
“Patrick isn’t happy about it but there is nothing we can do about it-at least after Sunday we know if we have to we can play without him.
“We showed great solidarity at Stamford Bridge once Patrick had gone off and I think our desire not to lose the game was what got us through.
“Nobody likes losing London derbies and we did feel a bit of injustice so we battled really hard and got ourselves back into the game.
“Kolo Toure got a lot of the headlines and everybody at the club is happy about that-he is a really exiting player who is just full of energy all the time.
“Obviously coming from a football outpost like the Ivory Cost he is just pleased to be at a club like Arsenal and is keen to make it a success.
“He was at the right place at the right time to score the equaliser for us, although I don’t think he knew where to run after he scored it –he was certainly a bit to quick for any of us to catch him though.
“We have to be happy with a point from that game-Chelsea away is a though one and to get a draw with 10 men was a good result for us. “

5/09/02 –Normal Service Resumed

Ray gets the better of Trev

Ray with a plate on his head
Sorry that the site has not been updated for a while but I’ve been on my holidays. Since the last update. Ray has been involved in helping Arsenal extend unbeaten run. Ray was superb in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, after inept Ref D’Arshole (sic) (or do I mean Sick?) sent off Vieira for having Gronkjaer kick his foot. Ray along with Brazilian Cheese lover Gilberto did a superb job in the centre of midfield after the unfortunate Frenchman was dismissed. Anyway, normal service has be resumed so stay tuned.

29/07/02 –It’s A Riot In Austria

Ray and his fellow players decide it best to leg it
Arsenal’s pre-season tour was almost cancelled when the Gunners game against Rapid Vienna was called off mid-way through the second half when Austrian fans started rioting . Ray was on the pitch when idiotic fans started throwing fares onto the pitch . The police intervened but the fans the turned on them. The match was restarted after 15 minutes. But when thing started getting nasty again both teams decided that when the most players were at the nearest end to the dressing room they would make a run for it rather than take anymore risks.

The team featured – Henry, Vieira , Wiltord , Bergkamp, Edu, Lauren and new signing Pascal Cygan but the real star was young Frenchman Jeremie Aliadiere.
Neuberg scored first but then Bergkamp netted the equaliser soon after. Seconds later Wiltord scored from a long ball from Upson . At half time there were major changes and Aliadiere quickly got on the score sheet and then set up Henry for the fourth with a superb cross . Henry got the fifth and then Aliadiere set up Edu for the six. Aliadiere the completed a superb performance by scoring the seventh. Zilic got a consolation for Neuberg by looping the ball in from the half way line.

18/07/02 -Ray Back In Stevenage Romp

Ray and Den
Ray took part in the 6-1 demolition of Stevenage Borough on Wednesday night in the first of Arsenal’s summer friendlies played for 70 minutes before being replaced by young Brazilian Paulinho. With Arsenal’s world Cup stars still away, it was a chance for some of the younger Gunners to shine. And they didn’t disappoint. Juan opened the scoring but soon after Stevenage equalised. But then the floodgates opened and Edu, Liam Chilvers , Jermaine Brown, Paulinho and Graham Barrett all scored. New signing Pascal Cygan also made his debut. The bald Frenchman put in an impressive 70 minutes.
