BR> 16/04/03-Ray On A Question Of Sport
Apparently Ray will be appearing in tonight’s FA Cup special of ‘A Question Of Sport’ Tonight (Friday) at 7.00pm BBC1.Thanks to Chiara for the tip off.
16/04/03-Ray Fit Fror The Final
Apologies for the slackness of the past few weeks. Ray is winning his battle to be fit for Saturday’s FA cup final. Ray has had an ankle problem that forced him off during the Sunderland game but Arsene Wenger has said: "Lauren, Oleg Luzhny and Ray Parlour have all recovered, and I have to make a decision about them on Friday. Some of them have only made one training session so I have to decide who I can gamble on."
25/04/03-Ray Knows Spurs Are Useless
Ray knows that it’s pointless to expect any favours from our hopeless North London neighbors-
“United don’t play until Sunday but to be honest I’m not expecting them to slip up against Tottenham,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column .“Spurs still have a sniff of Europe but United have been playing well lately and I cant see them not winning there.”
25/04/03-Ray’s Bolton Preview
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Saturday’s game at Bolton from his Islington Gazette Column -
“Bolton is going to be another tough game and we need to reproduce last season’s result when we went up there and were 2-0 up early on.
“But the Reebok is a very hard place to go and get a result at the moment. I watched their game against United last month and Bolton were very unlucky not to win it.
“With West Ham winning on Monday, Bolton know they are still not out of trouble. They’ll be desperate to take something out of the game on Saturday.”
25/04/03-Ray Gutted For Sol Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Sol Campbell’s sending of against Manchester United. Thais was written before Sol’s appeal was turned down by the F.A-
“It could be Sol Campbell’s last game of the season on Saturday and were gutted for him, ” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column .“The kind of incident that happened between and Ole Solakjaer last Wednesday happens all over the country every week and goes unpunished. Sol did catch him but I think it looked worse on TV.
“We haven’t given up hope though, his appeal is in and if it goes to an advisory panel then he might still have a chance.
“With or without Sol we are ready to battle all the way to the end of the title.”
25/04/03-Ray Honoured To Be Captain
Here’s what Ray had to say about being Captain in the game at Brough -
“I can’t say it wasn’t a big disappointment for me to not to be in the squad against Manchester United last week-but getting the captain’s arm band on Saturday certainly made up for it,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column.“I have skippered the side in Worthington Cup games pre-season friendlies before but never from the start in the Premiership and obviously it was a big honour for me.
“I know it was just for one match because Patrick Vieira , David Seaman and Martin Keown were all out on Saturday , but it is still pleasing for the boss to give me the nod.
“I really enjoyed the responsibility as well and I think it made me want to go out and put in a good display on the pitch.
“There is doubt that we felt disappointed not to beat United last week . We got our noses in front and it should have stayed that way, but we let our concentration slip.
“But the important thing was to realise that drawing that game was not a disaster. Losing it would have been.
“We knew the Middlesbrough game was a massive one and we were all very pleased with the way we played up there.
“Once we got the goal we felt confident of winning and getting that second saved any nerves near the end.
“It also meant we kept ahead of United on the goal difference and although that is important we won’t be going into games thinking we need to win by three or four goals. If you do you won’t win at all.
“We are aware that goal difference could decide it but it’s three points that is of most importance –1-0 will do us on Saturday.”
24/04/03-Ray Parlour’s Arsenal Bury ‘Boro
Starting his first Premier League game with the Captain's armband, Ray Parlour took central stage for this tough on paper away match at Boro. Arsenal desperately needed the three points and only one other visiting team this season had managed to get them at the Riverside.

Ray filled in for the injured Vieira and one must hope that Paddy himself along with every trainee on Arsenal's books was watching as the Southend Socrates gave a virtuoso performance from first minute to last. Ray earnt the likes of Pires, Henry and Wiltord the right to turn on the trickery with a display of tireless and ceaseless running, tackling, harrying and general fighting for the ball, the likes of which this reporter for one has never seen in over 10 years of Parlour watching.
Ray made a complete mockery of all those fickle deluded "fans" who thought we should offload him to soon to be Division One outfit West Ham for £3 million. £3 million ? That wouldn't buy his left leg. That kind of drive and determination cannot be bought. It's instilled in a player by him growing up within the club. Quite simply Ray knew we had to win and he made damn sure we did.
Cygan filled in admirably at the back for Keown, seeming to be untroubled by Boro's limp attack. It would appear that when the opposition have no pace he is more than capable of doing a job for us.
The goals were inevitable once Ray had taken on the mantle of Midfield General. Wiltord got the first with a classy finish after good work from Henry and Thierry grabbed the second through an unstoppable free kick.
So a clean sheet for once, (9th in 32 Premier League games and only our 3rd this year), and no change in the goal difference situation with The Forces of Darkness.
With another tricky away game coming up at Bolton you'd be a fool to discount the Barking Bebeto's chances of another start.
Ray Parlour: Unstoppable and Undroppable.

22/04/03-Captain Ray Not Worried About Man U
Ray was stand in Captain for Saturday’s 2-0 win at Middlesborough (report to come later).
Afer the match Ray said that he was not worried about what Manchester United is doing -
"All we do is concentrate on our own game and winning our matches,” he said.
"We won't worry about what they might or might not be doing. We showed great spirit and resolve at Middlesbrough and that is what we are going to need between now and the end of the season."
22/04/03-Ray Defends Muppet Shock
Ray has shockingly spoken out in defence of Graham (the thing from Tring) Poll!!!
“After he sent me off last season against Newcastle you might think I would be the last person to defend Graham Poll, but I think Sunday showed just how hard a job being a referee can be,” Ray said in his Islington Gazette column.“The incident leading up to our goal when he ran into Michael Tonge is just the kind of think that happens all the time in football.
“It was one of those moments that can come up and it was hardly a vital area of the pitch where you would think he would should stop the game.
“The fact that 11 or 12 touches later we scored was just unfortunate for him and I am not sure what he could have done after that.
“Managers always have a go at the referees-players do it most of the time as well –but I think if a few of them put on the referee’s shirt they might realise how difficult it can be .
“We all make mistakes- sometimes as a player they can lead to a goal or sometimes it is just a misplaced pass that nobody will ever remember-but for refs it is a little bit harder to get away with.
“There is talk of banning referees for making mistakes but I think that would be a bit harsh and were would it all end? “
22/04/03-Title Decider-My Arse!
So this was the crunch match of the season according to Sky, but in truth most of us suspected it probably wouldn’t be. Ray wasn’t even on the bench due to his injury , Freddie on the right in his place.
Ferguson decided to change his tactics this time, instead of trying to kick lumps out of Arsenal , this time United actually tried to play football which seemed to work pretty well , especially when in the 24th minute Cheating big chinned diving horse faced greaser Ruud van Nistelrooy put United 1-0 up.
It took Arsenal a while to recover from going a goal down and to add to their worries Patrick Vieira had to go off as his Knee problem worsened. The first half ended still 1-0.
In the second half Arsenal soon equalised. In the 51st minute Pires crossed to Ashley Cole, who’s shot took a lucky deflection of Henry’s leg .Who says Tierry can’t score ugly goals?
The game opened up and Arsenal started to turn up the pressure. In the 63rd minute Gilberto passed to Henry who shot the ball past Barthez . He looked to be off side but the lines man didn’t flag and interestingly United players didn’t complain.
While Arsenal players were still patting themselves on the back, however, United took the kick off and Ryan went down the other end and scored. Now I’ve seen some amateurish defending from them recently but that really did take the biscuit!
Towards the end Sol Campbell was sent off for what looked to be a elbow in Solskjaer’s face. From where we were sitting it was obvious that he didn’t touch Solskjaer and that Ole Gunnar had obviously been taking lessons from the big Dutch Horse faced cheat . But to be fair on the linesman it did look bad from his position but now poor Sol will miss the title run in and the FA Cup final.
The game finished 2-2 and on the final whistle, Ferguson ran onto the pitch like he had one the Championship. He especially made a point of shaking the linesman’s hand in comical fashion. More Fergie mind games of course but perhaps he should bare in mind his own words - "Their triumphalism could come back to haunt them. In football, these things can often backfire on you"
The support was fantastic and made me think if it was like that all the time we wouldn’t be fighting United for the title now, we would be celebrating having won it.
16/04/03-Ray Injury Doubt
Apparently Ray is a slight doubt for tonight’s game against Manchester United. He has a hamstring problem.
14/04/03-Ray’s Man U(re) Preview
Here’s Ray’s views on Wednesday’s crunch match with Man U from his Islington Gazette column-
“Obviously next weeks game with Manchester United is a massive match, the title could be decided by it although we both have some tough matches to come.
“We have certainly had some good results at Old Trafford in the last few years but not so many at Highbury and its time to change all that.
“Although we lost to them in the league back in December we had a great result up there in the Cup and we feel we can beat them again.
“United have had a big week with a trip to Real Madrid and now they have to go to Newcastle on Saturday looking to go clear at the top.
“We hope to have a couple of big players back for the United game. Martin Keown should be fit to return and he is important for us at the back.
“And Robert Pires should have a chance for that game too-in matches like these you want all your big players and Robert is certainly one of those.
“What ever happens on Wednesday there will still be a lot to do. We have to go to places like Boro and Bolton and they will not be easy places to go and win.
“I think there’s still a few more twists to come yet.”
14/04/03- Razor Blade

Ray put in an inspirational performance as The Gunners squeezed past Sheffield United to book their place in their third consecutive FA Cup Final.
With an eye on Wednesday’s crucial league game against Manchester United Wenger put out a changed Arsenal team, leaving Henry, Bergkamp and Gilberto on the bench. Martin Keown , David Seaman and Ashley Cole made a welcome return.
United did a good job of stopping Arsenal playing in their preferred style. This was never going to be a pretty game. Ray created the first chance of the game when his pass let in Jeffers but the Blades keeper John Curtis cleared it.
There were very few chances until the 34th minute when Ljungberg scored the games only goal, the build up of which was somewhat controversial. Campbell fouled Allison close to the penalty area but the ref Graham Poll waved on apparently deciding that Allison had gone down too easily. As Allison continued to stay down Arsenal went forward but would have certainly lost the ball if Poll hadn’t body-checked Tonge, who was about to intercept the ball. You could argue that Poll should have stopped the game then to get Allison, who was still down, treated. Instead Ljungberg got to the ball and passed to Jeffers on the left of the box. Franny crossed the ball to Wiltord who’s shot rebounded to him of the post. His second shot was blocked but Freddie slid in to blast in into the net.
In the second half United’s main tactic seemed to be to injure Vieira which was a successful as Paddy hobbled of after 10 minutes to be replaced by Gilberto. The absence of the midfield dynamo gave the Blades some hope and they started applying pressure and for a while things were looking quite dicey. Wenger threw on Henry and Bergkamp and Arsenal began to dominate towards the end. Henry spurned a good chance when he was put through from a low Gilberto cross. Then in the dying minutes David Seaman pulled off what must be the save of the season when we scooped away Paul Peschisolido’s close range header.
Ray was superb, he battled and harried throughout the game, if he lost the ball he would do his damnedest to get it back again. Being at the wrong end at the ineptitude of Mr Poll few times you couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for The Blades, but hey, you’ve shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. We’re on our way to Cardiff for the Final against Southampton (who beat Watford 2-1).
10/04/03-Ray On Pennant
Here is what Ray had to say in his Islington Gazette Column about Jarmaine Pennant being sent home from England under 21’s last week-
“What happened with him getting sent home from the England camp last week was a real shame and hopefully he can learn from a mistake like that.
“I know as well as anyone that you make a few mistakes when you are young and it has changed even more these days.
“I know Jermaine is a great young player though and every player in the country would love to be at a club like Arsenal.
“It’s hard for him but I’m sure he will get his chance. He can put this incident behind him and concentrate on the future which I am sure will be big for him.”
10/04/03-Ray’s Blade Preview< BR>
Here’s Ray’s thought on Sunday’s FA Cup Semi-Final with Sheffield United from his Islington Gazette Column-
“Anybody who is thinking that we only have to turn up against Sheffield United on Sunday has obviously forgotten when we played Wolves in the semi back in 1998.
“They weren’t even that close to the top of the First Division but gave us a really close game and in the end we were hanging on to win 1-0.
“There is just no such thing as an ‘easy’ semi-final, they are always tense matches and Sheffield United have no pressure on them at all. They have had a hard season and are almost certainly going to end up in the play-off’s so the cup is a bonus for them.
“It will be their cup final on Sunday. They will have great support out there and they know that if they can turn us over then they have a great chance of winning the FA Cup and getting into Europe too.
“But we want to get back to Cardiff too -I’ve been lucky enough to play in four FA Cup Finals and they are the greatest days of your career.
“People say that this competition isn’t what it used to be but to me it is still one of the best in the world-it starts with your local non-league team in August and goes right through to the big final in May.
“Just look what happened this season with Farnborough coming to Highbury and Dagenham & Redbridge doing so well-you just can’t beat the FA Cup.
“I’ve only lost one FA Cup semi-final and it’ll be my sixth on Sunday so hopefully I can keep that record going.”
07/04/03-They Have To Put Us Through It!
Arsenal dropped 2 important points as they drew 1-1 with Aston Villa at Villa Park. Ray started in a team that missed Robert Pires , Martin Keown and David Seaman to injury. Ashley Cole however was on the bench. Villa obviously wanted to hold Arsenal, playing a five man midfield but it didn’t help that Arsenal didn’t seem to have their usual spark.
The Gunners had very few shots in the first, Vieira hashed his shot at a open goal and Ljungberg lost his feet when a Henry pass gave him a clear scoring opportunity.
The breakthrough came after half time when Gilberto’s shot was parried by Enckelman and Freddie slid in to make it 1-0. In the 71st minute Villa had a corner, as the ball bounced about in box there was a scramble, Cygan failed to clear the ball and Kolo Toure desperately trying to clear the ball slammed it into his own net. Wiltord was bought on and then Jeffers (why he came on so late I’ll never know) but to no avail and it finished 1-1.
So now the gap with Man U is reduced to goal difference. Why is it that when ever we have an International week we loose momentum ????
04/04/03-Ray's Villa Preview
Here’s Rays thoughts on Saturdays game at Villa from his Islington Gazette Column -
“Villa have been a difficult side to work out in the last few season’s and this year their form has been up and down.
“There’s no doubt they have some good players but they just haven’t scored enough goals in the last couple of years and that has been their problem this season.
“Having said that they gave us a tough game at Highbury back in November when we needed a late penalty to get some breathing space and a 3-1 lead , and Villa Park is never an easy place to go.
“Winning there last season was a big result-we were holding on a bit at 1-0 when David Seaman made a great penalty save and Robert Pires scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-0.
“But they came back at us with a goal and we were hanging on at the end-it is going to be important to get the three points this time around.
“The fact that Manchester United play Liverpool before we kick off won’t bother us either.
“The TV guys are always saying that it puts this much or that much pressure on you but the way we look at the match is simple-we want to win it.
That is what we have been thinking all week and it won’t change weather United drop points against Liverpool or not .
“Obviously it would be nice if Liverpool could do us a favour but we know we have seven games left and if we win them all we will be Champions again, no matter what United do in their games.
“And of course we are not just talking about Manchester United here- Newcastle are only five points behind us and could still have a big say.
Bobby Robson has got them fired up and if they can beat United on a week Saturday they will be in with every chance knowing Fergie’s boys are playing at Highbury in the next game.”
04/04/03-Ray Fresh And Ready
In his Islington Gazette column Ray talks about the international break and preparing for Saturday’s game at Villa and the title push-
“With quite a few of the boys away it has been quieter than usual at the club this week but those of us who have stayed have had plenty of time to prepare for Saturday’s game at Villa.
“With some of the quad having played two games in five games and done a fair bit of travelling too it will be a bit decision as to who will be ready in time for Saturday.
“A lot of people think players that have been rested should get a look in but that’s not really the way it works here-even though some like myself wont have played for 11 days by the time Saturday comes around it doesn’t mean we’ll be straight into the side.
“But the boss will want to get the right mix and with quite a few on the treatment table I know I have a good chance of being involved at Villa.
“For us it has been a good break-we had a chance to work on a few things and at this time of the season that is important-the next six weeks will decide everything and we want to be as prepared as we can.”
02/04/03-New Message Board
The Site now has a message board where you can talk all things Ray, Arsenal or anything general. So come and join us the more the merrier!
02/04/03-Fooled You (not)
My sincerest apologies for the dreadful Aprils fools joke yesterday. I doubt anybody fell for it anyway, but I know the sight of Ray in a spurs shirt is a thoroughly distasteful vision. I am deeply ashamed.
01/04/03-Ray In Peterborough Win
Despite his imminent move to Spurs Ray was involved in a behind closed doors friendly against Peterborough United today. The main purpose of the game was used to get Ashley Cole and Oleg Luzhny back to full fitness but Kanu, Lauren, Dennis Bergkamp, Edu, Pascal Cygan and Guillaume Warmuz all played as well as Ray. Arsenal won 4-2 Ashley Cole score aswell as Kanu, Ryan Garry and Bergkamp.
01/04/03- Ray In Spurs Swap Shock

It has been widely reported that Ray is defecting to White Hart Lane in the summer. The move involves a swap with Steven Carr. Spurs are desperate to replace Gus Poyet who is retiring at the end of the season and Simon Davis who is linked with a summer move to Manchester United. Arsenal on the other hand have been interested in Steven Carr for some time and see him as natural choice for the right back position.
Glen Hoddle has been a admirer of The Romford Pelé for a long time, giving him his first England cap.
In an interview with Sky Sports News Hoddle boasted "I'm delighted to once again have the opportunity to work with Ray. It speaks volumes for the ambition of this club to be able to secure the services of a player of Ray's calibre. I see him as the midfield hub the around which we can build a team able to challenge for major honours."
31/03/03-Blue Murder

Despite feeling they were favorites Chelsea were ‘done over’ by the Mighty Arse yet again.
Ray started joining Vieira, Eduuuuu and Pires in midfield. Wiltord and Jeffers started up front Henry and Bergkamp both on the bench. Chelsea strangely started with Zola and Jimmy Floyd Idontgivaf*ck up front and leaving Gudjohnsen on the bench
Chelsea started strongly but some good defending reduced them to very few chances . In the 24th minute Wiltord ran towards goals and slipped the ball to Vieira coming in on the right . Paddy crossed the ball towards goals and the incoming, Wiltord and Jeffers but John Terry desperately lunged it past Cudicini and into the net.
Taylor then tipped a Jimmy Floyd free kick over the bar. In the 33rd minite Arsenal made it 2-0. Vieira strode out of midfield , laying the ball beautifully for Wiltord to slot it past Cudicini.

2-0 up at half time and after the break Chelsea did turn up the pressure but Arsenal defended very well (including Cygan!). Eidur Gudjohnsen was bought on and when Jimmy Flyed made a mean of a Cygan challenge the hapless Frenchman was give a second yellow and was off. Wenger’s reply was to send Henry and Ljungberg on. Down to 10 men Arsenal still managed to keep the Blue horde at bay but when Chelsea was awarded a free kick in the 79th minute Terry headed in. It could have been, as a certain old Scots soak would say ‘squeaky bottom time’ ,but three minutes later Lauren cut inside and scored from the edge on the box. As the players celebrated missiles rained down and Henry was cut of the side of his head by what looked like a cigarette lighter.
Vieira was superb and the way he has played this season has proved he is worthy of Tony Adam’s arm band. Ray was solid as well and did his cause of getting his regular place back no harm. Cygan had one of his best games and it was sad that in finished for him on a low point.
So for the third year in a row Chelsea have gone out of the Cup too us. They must really hate us. With the behaviour of some of their so called ‘supporters’, the feelings mutual though.
29/03/03-Ray Happy about Frannys England Call Up
Here is what Ray had to say about this weeks internationals in his Islington Gazette column-
“With no games this weekend all eyes will be on the international scene and it is a big week for England.
Although Liechtenstein should be no problem on Saturday the Turkey game is going to be although one and Sven Goran Eriksson will want all his player available for that one.
“It’s great to see Franny Jeffers make the full squad and it just goes to show how quickly things can happen for a player at a club like Arsenal.
“Once you make it here you are noticed straight away and Eriksson obviously likes what he sees in Franny to want him in the squad.
“It is always strange for those left behind in these weeks , but we know it could be a valuable spell when we can get some players back.
Ashley Cole is hoping to get involved again soon and Martin Keown and David Seaman are both being treated for injuries so it will be buisier than usuall at London Colney in an international week.”
29/03/03-Ray’s Everton Review
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on last Sundays win against Everton from his Islington Gazette column-
“We knew just how vital it was it was to win on Sunday having gone out of Europe last week so every body was relieved to get the three points against Everton.
“The fact that Manchester United had replaced us at the top the day before also put a little bit of added pressure on us but it is nothing we are not used to, and after a tough week it was a good performance from us to get the win.
“We were all pleased for Pascal Cygan to get his first goal for the club as he has had to take a lot of stick in recent weeks, especially up at Blackburn where to be honest the whole team under performed on the day.
“Pascal has not played that much Premiership football and it takes time to adapt as we have seen before-Martin Keown’s boots are big ones to fill and we all know that.
You could see why Everton have done so well this season on Sunday-they work so hard for each other and in Wayne Rooney they have a player who is always capable of getting a goal out of nowhere.
“We did well to get our noses in front again after he scored and although we had to hang on a bit at the end it was so vital that we did.
“For me personally it was good to get on the pitch for the last 25 minutes and nice to get a great ovation from the fans too.
AS I have said before this is a hard side to get into and all I can really do is try my hardest when I am given the chance and try make it impossible for the boss to leave me out.”
29/03/03-Wayne Can’t Roon Gunners Title Chase
Ray Parlour turned in a virtuoso performance as a second half substitute in the Arsenal's hard fought but deserved victory over an ever improving Everton.
Starting with the usual team, although Cygan played for Keown, Ljungberg for Wiltord and Gio VB still deputising for Ashley Cole the Gunners looked to put the disappointment of their Champions League exit behind them and regain the top spot temporarily held by the Forces of Darkness following their elbow inspired victory the previous day.
Pascal Cygan, looking like a man so short of confidence, one wouldn't be surprised to see him wearing brown trousers, made a hash of an extremely routine clearance after barely 5 minutes. The signs were not looking too good, although coming forward Arsenal were full of determination. On 8 minutes they won a corner on the left which Henry swung into the six yard box and rising majestically like a rabbit caught in headlights was none other than Cyagn to powerfully head home. Fans and players erupted as the bald headed one was mobbed by his team mates.
Suddenly the Reds were in complete control. Cygan was enjoying himself doing the simple things well, (surely what defending is all about ?), Gio was playing like a man possessed, Vieira, despite constant fouling from Gravesen was bossing the midfield as only he can and Bergkamp was everywhere, chasing and harrying the Everton defence.
The Toffeemen opted for a 9 men behind the ball strategy for the remainder of the half, so despite some fine approach play and the fact that they had Arsenal reject and ball puncher extraordinaire, Richard Wright, in goal, The Gunners failed to add to their lead.
Everton emerged for the second half with far more purpose, and young offender Wayne Rooney, who had been anonymous up to that point, suddenly began putting himself about. Hesitancy by Cygan well outside the box allowed the pint-sized scouser to drive into the area and lash a shot past Stuart Taylor and into the net.
Highbury's nerves jangled and you could almost hear Fergie wittering on about panic stations at Arsenal - (Yeah right). Hesitancy by both Gio and Cygan again nearly gifted Rooney an identical second but he shot poorly wide.
On 64 minutes persistence by Bergkamp chasing an Henry nod on caused panic in Everton's 6 yard box and Vieira was on hand to drive home. 2 -1 and the Gunners never looked back. Ray came on minutes later to a rapturous reception and got stuck in straight away. An audacious scissor kick, straight off the sand of the Copa Cabana, nearly came off for him and a fantastic run the length of the pitch and hold the ball up in the corner was executed in fine style to a standing ovation. Even though we are fed on Caviar and Champagne at The Home of Football we still appreciate the simple things in a game of football.
Everton manager Moyes brought on serial assaulter Duncan Ferguson but persistent fouling cunningly disguised by Cygan limited his impact.
The match finished 2 -1 and Arsenal regained their rightful place at the top of the Premiership pile.
Reports from Reuters meanwhile suggest that a cloud of noxious gas was sighted and a squeaking noise heard around Alderley Edge at about 6 pm on Sunday night, as well as the unusual sound of a drunk Scotsman choking on his own soundbite.
29/03/03-Things Back To Normal?
Sorry that the site has not been updated for a while. Our hosts Tripod have been doing some ‘essential work’ to improve things apparently which usually means thing don’t work half as well anymore. Fingers crossed though.
20/03/03-Ray Hits Back At Incompetent Hacks
Ray has hit back at reports that he is unhappy and wants more games-
“There have been rumours this week saying that I am getting depressed at not playing and that I am demanding talks with the manager but I don’t know where that story came from,”Ray said in his Islington Gazette Column.
“I did not do that interview at all and I know full well that it is a big squad here at Arsenal and I’m happy to fight for my place.
“It was a lot of rubbish in the ‘News of the World’ on Sunday .
“We are all in it together and the manager knows that I would not say that.
“I will just work hard and keep playing and hope the manager picks me.”
20/03/03-It Will Be A Sticky Game Against Toffees
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Sundays must win games against Everton from his Islington Gazette column-
“On Sunday we face Everton at Highbury and it is a must win game for us. We did not go to Ewood Park thinking we would get beat but things did not work out for us and that happens now and again.
“Victory against Everton is essential, especially after we lost at Blackburn at the weekend because Manchester United are right back in it, so we have to be looking at trying to win all of our last eight matches now.
“We do not pay any attention to those claims in the papers that we are over confident, We have a job to do and that is the only thing players can do.
“Everton will be a very tough game for us. Every team who comes to Highbury now is playing for something and Everton are looking for a Champions League place.
“I can see the match being a very difficult and cagey game.
“Patrick Vieira will be fit for Sunday, he is getting better by the day.
“Sol Campbell should also be fit and that is more good news.”
20/03/03-Out On Their Arse
Ray didn’t play as Arsenal were dumped out of the Champions League by a 2-1 defeat in Valencia.
Wenger chose to play Kolo Toure at Left back, Sol Campell was rushed back to partner Cygan , Vieira returned to the Midfield.
Arsenal started brightly and Henry , Wiltord and Pires all had good chances . But in the 34th minute John Carew made it 1-0. After the break Henry equalised from a through ball from Pires . Seeing as we only needed a draw to qualify things were looking hopeful but then Carew struck again, heading in from a cross. Arsenal replied by trying to play the long ball, which has never worked for them in Europe or anywhere else for that matter. This suited Valencia very nicely and when they got the ball they made sure they kept it for as long as possible.
Jeffers and Kanu were bought on towards the end to no avail. Pires went down in the box but the ref booked him for diving.
So ends another disappointing European campaign. A Campaign that promised so much but produced ...well just a sour taste as per usual. Lets hope at least it gives them the kick up the arse they need to finish the League in style.
19/03/03- An Injury To Far

The less I say about this one the better really. A shambles from start to finish , arguably Arsenal’s worst performance of the season. It didn’t help that Cole , Campbell, Seaman and Vieira were all injured, Ray was partnered by Edu in the centre of midfield, Wenger choosing to rest Gilberto.
Blackburn started brightly and just as Arsenal looked to be finding some momentum Keown pulled a hamstring while attempting to head in a free kick. Gilberto came on as a makeshift centre back to partner Cygan and at this point you could tell things were not going to go our way. Indeed 3 minuets later poor defending allowed Damien Duff to score from close range( sadly the move started when Ray was dispossessed by Flitcroft). Then after the break Tugay.
made it 2-0. Friedel made some good saves but nothing like his heroics at Highbury, he didn’t have to, Arsenal forward were so limp. Henry Bergkamp and Pires all look knackered So our lead in the Premiership is down to 2 points. We have to go Valencia without Keown , Cole and Seaman and possibly Campbell and Vieira aswell! The thought of Stepanovs
, Cygan Gio van Bronckhorst in defence sends shivers down my spine.
17/03/03- Ray-Give Me More Games
According to the News of the World, Ray has expressed a desire to play more games-
"It's hard to complain when the side are doing so well but I want to play every week," he was quoted as saying. "You wait for your chance but it can become depressing and difficult.
"The injury problems haven't done me any favours but I feel sharp now and if things don't improve then, maybe, it would be time to talk to the boss.
"This is one of the problems of playing for one of the biggest clubs in Europe. The problem is that the manager has had a fairly settled side for most of the season, while I have been out injured, so it is difficult to force your way back in.
"I thought I did well against Manchester United in the FA Cup but I know the manager can't keep us all happy."
"I need a consistent run of games to start thinking about playing for England again."
14/03/03- Ray’s Blackburn Preview
Here’s Ray’s views on the Blackburn match in his Islington Gazette column-
“It’s been a bit difficult putting up with all the stories about us being over-confident in the last few weeks and all I can say is that if you are not confident going into big matches then you aren’t going to win them.
“Of course we believe that we are a great team and we will win things and the boss had installed that belief in us over the years.
“The important thing for us is to stay focused and nowhere more so than in the League where we know we have a very tough game up at Blackburn on Saturday.
“Coming in between two big European matches it is always going to be a difficult one and Graeme Souness has built a tidy little side up there.
“We won’t be taking them for granted though because it’s games like these that can win or loose the title.”
14/03/03- Ray On The Chelsea
Here’s Ray’s views on the Chelsea replay from his Islington Gazette column-
“Looking at our at our fixture list this week it is obvious that the last thing needed on Saturday was a draw.
“We were all disappointed not to have won on the day because we definitely had a few chances to kill them off before they came back.
“Chelsea knew that if they kept it tight they might be able to nick one in the last few minutes and that’s how it turned out.
“But we are still in the cup and we have every reason to be confident that we can win at Stamford Bridge at the end of the month .
The pitch at Stamford Bridge has been relaid and so we will be able to play football on the night-it’s going to be another great game to be involved in. At this stage of the competition you know the final is not far away though and everybody digs deep to try and get through.
“A lot has been said about weather replays should still be around and that is something the FA will have to look at.
But for clubs like Chelsea and plenty of others who aren’t in Europe they are not a problem. “It’s just for us who are still in everything this year and I suppose we are paying the price of our success now.
“But we believe we have a squad big enough to deal with it –even if we have to play two games in three days we will be able to handle it.
“Having said that the Manager likes to make a few changes in attack and midfield but it important for the back four to be consistent and it will be a lot of games for them if we continue to be successful.”
14/03/03-Totti Gotti Senty Offi After his exertions against Chelsea, Ray was not named in the starting 11 for the crunch Champions League tie with Roma at Highbury, Wenger opting for the experienced Vieira / Gilberto partnership in central midfield with Wiltord on the right. Sol was missing due to a strain and was replaced by the increasingly dodgy Cygan.
Arsenal started well as ever and had a couple of chances before in the twelfth minute Vieira rose highest in the six-yard box to power home a header from Gio's corner. Yes, that's right, we scored from a corner!
Meanwhile Totti, who if he hadn't become a professional footballer would surely have carved out a career as an Olympic diver, was indulging in a running battle with Keown. Someone had obviously forgotten to tell him that if you want to play a game of windup, Keown is not the person to do it with. There are few players who are better at, or enjoy more, a physical, niggling confrontation than Keown. Having already been caught a couple of times off the ball by Totti, Keown fell to the floor, tv pictures clearly showing the Italian's hand catching him in the face, right in front of the referee. Instant red card, (for intent since he looked round, raised his arm and ran straight at Martin). Cue pandemonium as the Roma players surrounded the referee and whined.
Reduced to 10 men and in a state of shock Roma were there for the taking. Unfortunately, whilst they dominated proceedings, Arsenal seemed to ease off and failed to add to the scoresheet. As half time approached a routine long ball evaded Cygan, Keown, Seaman, Gio, Lauren and just about everyone except, crucially, Cassano, who nipped in to round the keeper and score.
In the second half the Gunners came out the traps like Archway born sprinter Dwaine Chambers out the starting blocks and had a multitude of chances to kill off the Italians. Just about everyone blazed a shot over the bar and in truth their dodgy keeper was never really tested. Ljungberg and Franny replaced Bergkamp, who was superb and Wiltord who disappointed yet again. That said the abuse he received from some "supporters " was inexcusable and these people really do have short memories, (OT 2002 ?).
Arsenal pressed but failed to really create anything of note. The Highbury crowd grew increasingly frustrated with the flicks and tricks of our players when surely something more direct would have been more effective.
It ended 1 - 1 and with results going our way at Ajax, a draw or win away at Valencia will guarantee the Gunners progress into the knockout phase.
Laughably, the Roma manager, Fabio Capello, complained that Keown had given "a performance straight from the cinema." So, an Italian football club Manager complaining about players faking injury to get others sent off. A pot and kettle were seen trading racial insults behind him as he spoke.

12/03/03-Tony Adams Calls For Parlour Grit
Tony Adams has urged manager Arsene Wenger to pick his Romford compatriot Ray
for the home-grown grit and determination .
``If it was me I would certainly bring Ray Parlour in.''
Adams told the London Evening Standard: ``You need players with his grit and determination to win vital games and this is a time when Arsene will really earn his money as manager.''
12/03/03-Ray Testimonial News
As some of you might be aware this is Ray’s Testimonial year. Many maybe be wondering if a Testimonial match will be arranged for Arsenal’s current longest serving player. In the program for the Roma match Ray revealed the difficulties of organising a date for that match-
“I’ve been here a long time now and obviously it will be a great night for me.
Myself and my Testimonial committee are hoping to approach the Club soon about a date at the end of the season. But at the moment there are so many games ahead for us that I don’t want to put pressure on the Manager, Mr Dein or anyone else by suggesting dates, although I’m sure we will sit down when the time’s right and look at possibilities .Looking at the fixtures list , lets hope we are involved in matches right till the end of May when there’s an important one at Old Trafford! But I’m sure we can find a date to play the game and once that’s sorted I can set my sights on who to try and get down here.”
11/03/03-Further Fixture Fun
Ray kept his starting place for the FA Cup match with Chelsea, stepping into an injury and suspension ravaged Arsenal side, missing Cole, Lauren and Vieira. The Boss clearly thought his intelligence and maturity, ( Ray turned 30 two days before), would be useful against the "Big Club who last won the League in 1955".
The Gunners were plainly still reminiscing about the thrashing handed out in the Final of the same competition last season, as John " yer names not down, yer not coming in" Terry snuk in at the far post to head home unchallenged after 3 minutes.

Usually this would have the effect of silencing an almost silent Highbury crowd, but not this time. The Gooners rose as one right around the ground and roared their team on. The players responded in fine style, completely dominating the visitors and creating chance after chance.
Henry hit a post and was pelted with coins by the no-necks from near the Kings Road. Ray went close with a glancing header and a rasping drive. The only worries were whether all that possession was going to result in a goal and why Gronkjaer was continually roasting stand-in left back Gio VB.
Worry number 1 seemed answered when Jeffers was brought down, clean through on goal. 38,000 waited for a red card which never came and to add insult to injury Cuducini then saved Henry's penalty, diving well to his right. Chelsea celebrated like they had just won the cup, the Gooners just got louder.
Finally the Gunners found the net, Henry tormented the visiting defence before cutting the ball back for Jeffers to gleefully smash home.
The Arsenal continued to press and could have added several more, such was their dominance. However the game looked to be heading to half time with the score at 1 - 1 when Henry decided it was time for a party piece. A long ball from Sol out of defence was beautifully controlled by the French Trickster right in front of the onrushing Cuducini. However before he could collect the ball Henry spun and flicked at the same time, leaving the Chelsea stopper flapping at air as he passed the ball into an open goal. Highbury erupted and you could see the Chelsea players cave in before your eyes.
Thunderbird puppet lookalike and Chelsea Manager, Ranieiri changed things around at half time, replacing Galen Zola with another midfielder, (Zenden). Chelsea created absolutely nothing for the next half hour as Arsenal indulged in the exhibition / piss take football which we love so much but wish they wouldn't do until we are at least 2 goals in front. Henry in particular seemed to be delighting in roasting the right back constantly. Unfortunately though despite a number of chances the Arsenal failed to score.
A double substitution of Pires and Wiltord for Jeffers and Ljungberg looked good at the time, but with Henry limping off 5 minutes later we were suddenly left with no focal point for our attacks and a lot of players who didn't really seem to know where they should be playing.
Perhaps sensing a chink in the holders armour, Chelsea pressed on and created a few chances themselves before scoring a goal which this Arsenal team would be too ashamed to claim. It ended 2 -2 and The Arsenal travel to the Stamford Bridge Hotel ready to finish the job.
Expect a rout.

11/03/03-Ray’s Roma Preview
“We know that the Roma game has become a must win match for us and that is exactly what we intent to do.
“We have been a little unlucky not to win at home in our last four matches in Europe but I don’t think we have forgotten how to win at Highbury or anything like that.
“The way the group is shaping up I think we can beat the Italians then we will be in a very strong position.
“Of course ideally we don’t want to have to go to Valencia needing something from the game but if that turns out to be the case we would be confident of doing that.
“We are still unbeaten in this group at the moment and winning on Tuesday is vital now-we desperately want to make it through after going out this stage last year and three points against Roma should do it.”
10/03/03-United Must Feel Worthless
Here is Ray’s views on last Sunday’s Worthington Cup final where Manchester United lost 2-0 to Liverpool-
“The Worthington Cup might not have been top of their trophy list at the start of the season but I am sure the Manchester United players didn’t enjoy losing the final so Sunday.
“Cup Finals are great occasions for the fans and the players and loosing one is not an experience you don’t want very often-as we know only too well , Liverpool are a hard team to beat in Cardiff.
“Of course having been there for the last two FA Cup Finals we would love to make it three in Cardiff.”
07/03/03- Ray's Chelsea Preview
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on Saturday’s FA Cup match against Chelsea from his Islington Gazette column-
“People seem to have forgotten just how close last year’s FA Cup final was I think we are in for a very tough game on Saturday.
“That game in Cardiff was on a knife-edge until we scored and it was a case of whoever got the first goal would win it.
“It was me who got it of course and I am just glad I enjoyed it at the time because (as everyone keeps telling me) it was the last one I scored-I like to save them up for the big games...!
“Chelsea have improved a lot this season and you only need to look at their FA Cup run for proof of that-they used to be a bit suspect away from home but they have won at some awkward places like Shrewsbury and Stoke so far.
“And there is no doubt for me that Gianfranco Zola is the best player they have had at the club-in fact it is fair to say he has been one of the best foreign players to come into the Premiership.
“Even at 36 he still looks very fit and has been a great professional throughout his time at Stamford Bridge.
“ As ever the midfield battle will be very important in a big London derby cup tie and we know all about what Manu Petit can do-but Frank Lampard has had a very good season too and who wins the midfield battle will probably win the game.
“Obviously I hope to be involved on Saturday after playing 90 minutes at the weekend although at the moment it’s difficult to know what side the manager will pick.
“We will all be training hard and tomorrow (Friday) will find out who is in the side-only after Saturday can we start focusing on Roma.”
07/03/03- Birthday Ray!

I don’t know if any one noticed but it’s very special day today. Thirty years ago today The Pelé of Romford entered the world. Hopefully he won’t be heading off to the Upton Park retirement home for over the hill Gunners quite yet though!
In yesterdays Islington Gazette, Ray said “I am 30 tomorrow and that is making me feel old –but the legs still seem to be working OK so fingers crossed I will be around a good while yet!”
Happy Birthday Ray. How about a Birthday goal tomorrow against Chelsea?
04/03/03- Red Sunday

No ‘Black Sabbath’ for the Addicks as Arsenal cruised to a 2-0 victory at Highbury. Ray started, partnering Edu in the centre of midfield (Vieira serving a suspension) . Kolo Toure and Van Bronckhorst were replacement full backs for the suspended and injured Lauren and Cole. Freddie Ljungberg made a welcome start after being out for over two months and Jeffers partnered Henry up front.
Arsenal were well organised and determined not to make the same mistakes they have made against Charlton in the past. After 26 minutes Henry supplied a low ball into the penalty area that Jeffers tucked away. Charlton almost equalised within seconds as Bartlett's flicked header realeased Lisbie Seaman making a good diving save
Ray had a shot from 25 years , remenisant of his FA Cup final goal against Chelsea but Kiely saved. Then just before half time Arsenal made it 2-0 . Henry then lost it a bit, kicking out at Scott Parker after a tackle.

Thankfully Parker didn’t react or Thierry would surly have walked. Then Arsenal made it 2-0 with a typical counter attack from Pires to Henry who crossed into the box, Ljungberg hooked the ball on to the post and Super Bob headed home the rebound.
The in second half Arsenal should have made it more, Pires and Henry both having good chances. Kiely produced a superb block to deny substitute Wiltord (who came on for Freddie) , and Luke Young somehow stopped Jeffers from tapping in from a yard out. Ray had a great game along with Edu ensuring we didn’t really miss Vieira at all. We are now 8 points clear of the luckless Mancs who had to take that knowledge straight into the Worthington Cup final, which kicked of straight afterwards. They ended up runners up in that as well.
27/02/03-Ray- ‘It’s Difficult Being On The Bench’
In his Islington gazette column Ray talks about the frustration of spending a lot of time on the bench recently-
“Obviously I would rather be playing from the start than coming off the bench but it’s just something I have come to accept being in one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
“The manager has had a fairly settled side for most of the season while I was out injured and it’s very difficult to force you way back in.
“Along with the other players who have been on the bench a lot recently like Edu and Franny Jeffers, I thought I did well at Old Trafford in the FA Cup a fortnight ago when the boss rested a few players .
“But you can’t expect one good game to earn you a regular start in a siude like we have got at the moment. There are only 11 places in it and we’ve got about 25 great players fighting for them.
“The manager can’t keep us all happy so it’s our job to make sure when we do get the chance we show what we are worth.
27/02/03-Ray’s City Review
Here’s Ray thoughts on the Manchester City games from his Islington gazette column-
“When you are a player days like Saturday at Maine Road when you are 4-0 up away from home inside 20 minutes can’t happen enough!
“Everybody was expecting a really tough game up there after they ran us fairly close at Highbury earlier in the season , but it didn’t materialise.
“We just went for their throats straight from the off and their defending wasn’t up to it-we finished our chances well and five different goalscorers away from home after a big week in Europe is enough to keep any manager happy!
“With United dropping a couple of points it turned out to be a very good weekend for us and we know that if we can keep on winning games then nothing can stop us in the title race.
“The games are running out now-there are only 10 to go and every one you win gets you closer to the title .
“Results like Saturday’s can only give us more confidence and we know that it is down to our results-United dropping points is great but if we keep picking up three points nothing can stop us.
“Having said that we know United will never give up the chase-they will battle us all the way as they have before.”
27/02/03-Dam!
Ray came on as a sub late on as Ajax again managed to hold Arsenal to a draw this time in Amsterdam.
The Dutch Champions started the game cautiously, choosing to attempt to contain Arsenal rather than go at them . Arsenal started well ,Henry had a good shot saved by Ajax keeper in the 3rd minute. Gilberto and Wiltord both had chances. Ajax started to attack more, Zlatan making a couple of good chances.
In 35th minute, Wiltord got the ball on the right side of the box and passed to the advancing Vieira but the keeper got to it just as Paddy was sliding in. Ashley Cole then had a good claim for a free kick on the edge of the box waved away by the referee.
In the 37 minute Pires fouled De Jong on the edge of our box but Chivu's free-kick was headed of the goal-line by Cole.
In the second half Ajax started to attack more and whenever Arsenal did attack they seemed to be broken down easily. Lauren then deflected a good shot from Zlatan over the bar. Henry then won a free kick from 30 yards out, it looked like it was just going over but the keeper got his fingers to it anyway but no corner was given.
The game was crying out for Ray and Jeffers and both were sent on in the 78th minute, Ray for Wiltord , Franny for Bergkamp . But it was too late for them to make too muchh of an influence on the game and it finished 0-0.
Credit to Ajax who rally surprised everyone in this group but Arsenal really should have done better in both games. Okay it’s not the end of the world as Roma beat Valencia 3-0 so the Gunners are joint top of the group with Ajax. Both 3 draws out of the last 3 games we are hardly setting Europe alight.
26/02/03-5 Go Mad In Manchester

Arsenal took full advantage of Manchester United dropping 2 points with a 5-1 romp against Manchester City at Maine Road. The Gunners were 4-0 in the first 20 minutes even with Ray on the bench, Wenger choosing to play Wiltord on the right. Dennis Bergkamp put Arsenal ahead after 4 minutes when poor defending from Richard Dunne allowed Wiltord to thread the ball to The Dutchman in the box and he prodded it home.
After 12 minutes it was 2-0 Henry approaching from the left-hand line passed to Pires who tapped it home.
In the 16th minute Keown putted the ball up to Henry who got past Dunne (again ) and took it with his left foot controlled it beautifully and looped it over the keeper with the same foot. It was a beautiful bit of skill.

Cambel made it 4-0 after19 minutes, heading in Henry’s corner.
In the second half City were just playing for pride while Arsenal started to conserve energy for Wednesday’s trip tom Amsterdam. Fowler and Anelka had a few good chances to be foiled by some excellent keeping from Stuart Taylor. In the 55th minute Vieira ran clear and shot under Nash , 5-0.
10 minutes later ,Ray came on for Bergkamp as City kept pressing for some kind of consolation but Stuart Taylor was not going to concede easily. City did get a break through at the death when ‘Whineing –Horse’ Anelka scored with a close range tap in. It was a shame for the young keeper who pounded the ground angrily.
Great to see 5 goals all scored by different players. Arsenals are show real solidarity at the moment. 5 points clear at the top with a massively better goal difference. I Just Loove it.
22/02/03-Lets Re-Maine Focused
Here’s what Ray had to say about Saturday’s game at Manchester City in his column-
“We’ll be back in Manchester this weekend to take on City and with three Premiership points at stake this game is just as important to us (as Man United).
“Coming between two big European games it is important we don’t loose our focus and go to Maine Road with the right attitude, and get the right result.”
20/02/03-Ray On Bootgate
Here is Ray’s opinion on the Beckham football boot incident from his Islington Gazette Column-
“A lot has been said about what happened between David Beckham and Alex Ferguson at the weekend but we won’t go around thinking that will effect United’s title challenge.
“Although Arsene Wenger is very calm in the dressing room, there were certainly a few things lobbed about in George Graham’s day and every boss has their own style of management.
Fergie is well known to be a vocal manager and it has brought him a lot of success, but what happened on Saturday seems to out of the ordinary and I’m sure United won’t be happy about that.”
20/02/03-Ray's Man U Review
Here is what Raymond had to say about Saturday’s huge victory at Old Trafford, from hies Islington Gazette Column-
“The way we played at Old Trafford on Saturday shows what we are capable of and we know if we can keep our performance level that high we can be Champions again.
“I was saying last week how important the game was and there is no doubt it has given us confidence and belief that we can go on to achieve what we did last season-perhaps even more.
“The tackles were flying in early on but I think the referee did well to keep 22 players on the field-that is what people want to see and we saw up at Newcastle how playing against 10 men can make it a different game.
“We wanted revenge for four years ago and for the way we lost in December and I think we got it-the fans up there were leaving early and it’s not often you see that at Old Trafford.
“We also showed just how strong the squad is at Highbury these days and, as it was last season, that is going to prove vital in the coming weeks.
“The boss needs to know he can rely on whoever plays and that was the case on Saturday-Syvain Wiltord and Franny Jeffers were great up front and to say we didn’t miss Thierry Henry that much is certainly proof of that.
“If you look at games coming up like the match with Charlton a week on Sunday when we have a number of players out suspended it is so important that two or three players can come in and do what is necessary.
“Personally I enjoyed Saturday’s win almost as much as winning the title in May when the pressure was huge.
“We go into games against them believing we can beat them home or away and maybe a couple of years ago we didn’t quite have that belief.”
19/02/03-Gunners Highjacked By Ajax
A tired looking Arsenal continued their poor run of home Champions league results last night with another disappointing display. Against a makeshift and young Ajax side they could only draw, leaving the group wide open with three games left to play.
Arsene decided to leave Ray on the bench for this one and started with Vieira and Gilberto in the centre with Wiltord and Pires out wide. Cygan came in for Boots Keown who picked up a knock at Old Trafford, (presumably when he was assaulted by Diving Horse).
The Gunners had a perfect start with Wiltord rounding off a sweet move after 4 minutes to drill the ball home through the keeper. Unfortunately this wasn't the catalyst to rack up a cricket score and the visitors quickly, (and all too easily), rallied, equalising after 20 minutes following a slip by Ashley Cole. In truth Ash had a pretty torrid night, continually exposed as Pires went walkabout and guilty of some schoolboy errors. It transpires that he was carrying an injury and only played after a number of injections to his ankle.
Arsenal huffed and puffed their way through the rest of the match but nothing seemed to quite come off for them , although they were inclined to overelaborate at times. Ajax were disciplined, hardworking, organised and not short of technique and did an excellent job at frustrating us. Their keeper finally learnt to catch the ball with about 10 minutes left but in fairness our reluctance to shoot made his job a whole lot easier. Gilberto looked shattered, seemingly still carrying the effects of flying for 36 hours in the space of 3 days - surely time for a proper rest. Vieira was superb, Pires quiet and Henry continued his search for the perfect goal. Cygan and Sol both looked solid, this type of game being what the bald headed Frenchman was bought for. We desperately lacked the drive in the centre which the Romford Pele would have provided. Only Wenger knows why he didn't play him and we'll just have to trust the great mans judgment. One positive on the night was Wiltord's continued good form, following his fine goal at Old Trafford. He worked his socks off, constantly running at the defence and looked the most likely source to create a goal. Unfortunately few of his colleagues showed the same commitment to the Red and White cause and ultimately the crowd left disappointed.
In the cold light of day, a point is not so bad, remember this lot drew at Valencia too. Arsenal are still joint top with everything to play for.
Report- Peter Krige
17/02/03-Poor United Bullied By Arsenal

Ray returned to the right side of midfield. Gilberto was dropped (after a slow plane to China)for Edu and strangely Henry was on the bench and Bergkamp wasn't even in the squad with Tuesdays game. Jeffers and Wiltord played up front This was an extremely similar side that Wenger fielded at Old Trafford at the end of last season (Jeffers for Kanu and Pires for Freddie the only changes) so it would be silly to contest it. Man U played pretty much their full strength team.
United came out looking to unsettle Arsenal by trying to kick lumps out of them. Now this seems to be Ferguson’s recent tactic when facing the Champions, it worked in the last game at The Theatre Of Prawns but it didn't work at the end of last season and it didn't work here. First Scholes was booked for GBH on Vieira. Then greasy Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy renewed his friendship Martin Keown with a crazy lunge for which Ref Jeff Winter rightly book him. After only just receiving a yellow card you would think Ruud boy would keep his head down for a while but instead, Jimmy Hill features flies in with another reckless lunge on Lauren, luckily for him Winter did not see it or he would have certainly been heading down the tunnel for an early bath. Vieira was booked for protesting too much to the ref.

After an explosive first 10 minutes United decide to keep their heads down a bit. It all seemed a bit of dejavu when Ryan Giggs took advantage of a Keown miss timed his tackle. Seaman panicked and ran out only to be rounded by Giggs , who then went past Campbell as well. With a gaping goal facing him Giggley Wiggsey blasted over the net and produced one of the most memorable blunders in the history. It's funy how things even out after a time and we were thankfully spared another horrific bear chested celebration.
It was this moment that basically changed the game. Arsenal’s confidence grew and they started to control the game. Just after half an hour the break through came when Keane brought Vieira at the edge of the area. Edu took the free kick which deflected off David Beckham’s shoulder and past a helpless Barthez
.
Arsenal finished the second half in complete control, passing the ball around and dictating the pace of the game, United rarely threatened.
After a half time under the hair dryer you would think United would have come out fighting but Arsenal were still running the show, Vieira commanding the midfield and putting Roy Keane to shame.
In the 52 minute, Edu ran into the Man U half and slipped a pass to Wiltord who skipped past Wes Brown in the United box sending Barthez
the wrong way as he shot low into the other side of the net.

Henry came on 72 minute for Jeffers and his beautiful weighted pass unlocked the United defence for Wiltord to speed into the box. Luckily for United, Wes Brown made a last ditch tackle just as Sylvvan was about to pull the trigger. Frankly it was very close to being a penalty. Scholes got away lightly when , conceding a free kick petulantly kicked the ball into the soft parts between Lauren’s legs.
After the game Ferguson said that Arsenal players 'bullied the referee'. What game were you watching Ferguson? Recently his attempts at ‘ mind games’ are sounding like complete bollocks, when it comes to surrounding the referee with veins popping out of their foreheads Man Poo are the Kings. United got off lightly with van Nistelrooy and Scholes both lucky to still be on the pitch.
Fergie was apparently so distressed by Arsenal’s bully tactics that he kicked a football boot into Beckham’s eye( a reasonable behaviour than Arsenal’s I’m sure you will agree) .
Just found out it’s Chelsea in the next round. Go on Ray you can do it again!

14/02/03-Ray On Ajax
In his Islington Gazette column Ray looks forward to the re-start of the Champions League with home and away games with Ajax-
“The Champions League starts again on Tuesday and we all know to win against Ajax would put us through to the quarter finals.
But that will not be easy –they are a very good side and they have nothing to loose now they have got this far. We have to make sure that we get the right result at Highbury on Tuesday and then we can take a lot of confidence over to the match in Holland.
“The manager is going to have to use the full squad in the next few weeks , but we are all fit and raring to go-only Rami Shaaban is out and that is a healthy position to be in at this stage of the season.”
14/02/03- Ray's Man U Preview
Here’s Ray’s thought on Saturday’s massive FA Cup clash with Manchester United on Saturday-
“Although it is a cup game and a one off you can’t say that it won’t effect the title race-back in 99 when Ryan Giggs’ goal beat us at Villa Park it is fair to say the result changed the season .
“We could well have gone on to be champions again if we had won that game, bit I think United got a lot of belief out of beating us with 10 men that night and it carried them through to take the title by just a point from us in the end.
“We had our chances that night and it was an epic battle to be involved in-let’s just hope that this time it can be us who get through.
“It is always a huge game when we play up at Old Trafford and having won the title there under a lot of pressure last season we know we can do it again .
“We need to concentrate on making sure we get our passing game going which. didn’t really happen last time, and as I said earlier , clean sheets are what wins matches. We always fancy ourselves to score so we have to stop conceding at the other end as often as we have been.”
14/02/03-Ray On Franny
Here is what Romford Péle had to say about Fancis Jeffers’ call up to the England senior squad from his Islington Gazette column-
“We so many international players away this week it is a very worrying time to be a manager and the boss will just be hoping that everybody comes back unscathed this week.
“Obviously Franny Jeffers getting his first call up was brilliant for him and it just goes to show how tough it is to get into the team here at Arsenal.
“I think Franny will get a chance soon though and he just has to make sure he takes it when it comes along. He is still young and had plenty of time.”
13/02/03- Ray's Toon Review
Here's what Ray had to say about last Sunday's result in his Islington Gazette column-
“Although we would have settled for a point at Newcastle before the game there is no doubt we were a bit disappointed not to have won the game on Sunday.
“Like Liverpool we made plenty of chances in the first half to be leading by more than one goal , but at 1-0 the other team are always in it.
“We don’t seen to have been keeping too many clean sheets recently and that is what cost us again on Sunday . “Newcastle settled for a point once they were down to 10 men and we couldn’t win it-it was a good point but three would have been so much better.
“United dropping points to city was a surprise and it just goes to show what an effect derby matches can have -United have only taken one point out six against City and the fact that we play so many derby matches in London always makes it harder for us in my opinion.”
12/02/03- Blobby Robson Whine
Arsene Wenger decided to stick with the central midfield pairing of Vieira and Gilberto for the top of the table clash at St. James' Park, leaving the Romford Pele to direct operations from the bench. Presumably his thinking was along the lines of keeping Ray fresh for the forthcoming FA Cup match at Old Trafford,(and a possible, late, England call up), especially since Gilberto will be unavailable due to Brazil's extremely crucial exhibition match on the other side of the World. Sylvain Wiltord was also again preferred to Raymundo on the right despite his increasingly erratic performances of late.
Arsenal started well, and quickly began to dominate on the pitch and silence the locals with a gutsy battling display. "Mr. Personality" Alan Shearer was up to his usual tricks of elbowing, barging and shirt pulling against both Sol and Boots Keown, neither being a battle he 's ever likely to win. Inevitably therefore he persisted in moaning to the ref as he came off worst again and again.
No surprises therefore to see him take his frustration out on Ashley with a studs up lunge. The "fair minded, educated, best in the world" Geordies all knew it was a superb challenge which Cole exaggerated, and therefore they abused him for the rest of the match.

All of which mattered for nothing since Arsenal completely dominated and opened the scoring after about 35 minutes, an incisive move involving Bergkamp and Wiltord playing in Henry to round Given and slot into an empty net. In truth the Gunners could have been 2 up before the goal with a number of great chances either missed (Pires' point blank header somehow going over),or excellently saved, ( Given incredibly heading over his own bar after Bramble's foot directed the ball goalward).
The second half continued as the first ended with Arsenal creating chances, notably for Henry who really should have done better when controlling on the edge of the box. We were left to rue that missed chance as about 3 minutes later little Frenchman Lauren Robert picked up the ball 30 yards out and set off on a run. He evaded a couple of challenges and thanks to a lucky bounce the ball ended up on his stronger left leg with which he was able to curl the ball round the outstretched hand of Dave Seaman.
The Geordies found their voice and Arsenal were rocked back on their heels albeit briefly. Robert, still overly excited by his admittedly fine strike, lunged in late on Ralph and found his way into the referees note book.
This being a televised match involving the Champions, controversy in some form was inevitable and it duly arrived in the shape of a blocked Arsenal freekick. Bergkamp having been fouled by Robert, spotted Henry's run and attempted to play him in. Twice he went to pass and twice Robert stuck out his leg from a position less than 1 yard from the ball. On the third attempt Dennis actually did play the pass, around Robert, but the player stuck out his leg quite deliberately and prevented the ball from passing him. He then whacked it straight at Ralph, the ref having blown his whistle. Immediately, the Toon players knowing what was coming surrounded both the ref and Dennis, Bellamy and Shearer in particular aggressively accusing Dennis of deliberately kicking the ball at Robert to get him sent off. Bellamy looked ready to burst into tears, although he often does start crying if things don't go his way.
As Robert trudged off the pitch safe in the knowledge that he'd probably just cost his side any chance of winning the title, (as if they ever had any anyway!), "People's Favourite" Blobby Robson, ( I now refuse to call him Sir), shook his head at Bergkamp and mouthed the word "cheat" repeatedly.
In truth the game fizzled out after this, Newcastle content to defend deep and Arsenal suffering from their all to frequent inability to break down teams putting 10 men behind the ball.
Dennis was booed at his every touch and when he was substituted Robson again shook his head at him and called him a cheat.
So the game ended 1 - 1 and in retrospect a highly satisfying point at a ground where the Home team had won their last 11 matches. With The Forces of Darkness failing to win an easy home game, we preserved our three point lead at the top.
What's so disappointing is that, yet again, a rival manager has had a decision go against him and rather than questioning his own player or the referee, has decided to accuse an Arsenal player of cheating. This kind of muck sticks and it is becoming an all too familiar whine in the post match press conference. What makes it all the more galling is that Robson last season suggested that Arsenal needed to "learn how to lose graciously". A manager whom I for one had great respect for prior to this game has succeeded in making himself look like a total idiot and a hypocrite. It really is time that managers were held to account regarding their comments on opposition players after games, much as they are for referees.

12/02/03-Language Lessons From Raymond In an interview in the latest Official Arsenal Magazine Ray reveals how he has been teaching the foreign players the Romford lingo -
“I think it’s important to have a laugh and a joke at times. When we walk out on the pitch we’re very serious, but you have to have a bit of humour as well.” Ray explains.
“I try and get the foreign players using a bit of Cockney rhyming slang and they all seem to enjoy having a go.
“Thierry Henry in particular will come out with phrases in the dressing room. His favourite at the moment is ‘beans on toast’ which means post, another good one is ‘bass guitar’ which is bar.
“Having a laugh and a joke can bring the squad together and help us get results . But we know we have to be serious when we walk out on the pitch.”
03/02/03- Super Bob Saves The Day
All the signs were there for a potential banana skin. Fulham’s former Gunner Luis Boa Morte was quoted in the press saying he believed his team got no better than a 10-1chance of defeating the champions. All the press were pointing out that Fulham had never beaten Arsenal and this was a absolutely certain 3 points. Hmm, so why was I not feeling so sure.

Ray wasn’t even on the subs bench, Wenger instead choosing to start with Wiltord. I have to say I could see some sense in this as The Romford Pele had played for 90 minutes in the last two games after coming back from long lay off. Also at home to Fulham is a bit of a Gallic affair more suited for Sylvan (obviously).
Arsenal went one up after 17 minutes when Henry crossed into the box and Bobby Pires headed (yes headed) it into the net (bouncing off the ground on-route). Okay then, time for a right royal spannering for The Cottagers- well no, because 13 minutes later Steed Malbranque equalises with a brilliant volley. You could see almost see the players scratching their heads, “This wasn’t in the script”.
In the second half Fulham held on they seemed very contented with the idea of a point a Highbury. Perhaps they were a bit jaded from the Liverpool match but Arsenal couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock. The recent weather has taken its toll on the Highbury pitch so it was not the usual perfect surface for their beautiful carpet football. Wenger (who spent most of the second half flapping about like a headless chicken) decides to make some changes. Jeffers comes on for Wiltord, Gio for Gilberto and Kolo Toure comes on for Lauren. Franny instantly made an impression, first he had a scorching shot tipped over by keeper Miak Taylor then setting up Vieira but as we know Paddy’s only limitation is that he can’t hit an elephants ass with a double bass. In injury time Gio put Jeffers through on the left side of the box. The fox in the box clipped the ball across goal where Pires slid in the score his second and the match winner.
A huge sigh of relief breathed by all. Its nice to see the Jeffers is finally proving his worth, some of his contributions have been crucial in the last month or so. Pires is just awesome. He seems to have added a new dimension to his game, darting into the box in the vein of Freddie Ljungberg. Is there anything that that man can’t do? Super Bob.
01/02/03- February’s A Big Month For Us
Here’s Ray’s view on the coming month and Saturday’s home game against Fulham, from his Column-
“February is certainly shaping up to be a big month with the Champions League kicking off again and some big Premiership games as well.
“We have got ourselves into a good position and it is important we go into the month with a good win against Fulham on Saturday”
People underestimate how hard these games can be and we know we will have to be at our best to win again.
01/02/03- Ray's Farnborough Review
This is what Ray had to say about the Farnborough from his Islington Gazette column-
“I thought they played brilliantly on the day and were a credit to no-league clubs,” Ray said. “ They approached the game very professionally and that made sure we had to do the same- we all thought they would tire towards the end but even with 10 men they kept going and it was competitive.
“I probably shouldn’t say this but I was almost quite pleased that Farnborough managed to get a goal-it was never going to change the outcome of the match and although as a team we never like to concede you can’t really begrudge them it.
“I think the conference is pretty much the same level as the third division now, a lot of the players have played league football and it shows.
“There was a bit of a scramble for shirts at the final whistle and I think it was Danny Carroll who got mine –but that’s the kind of thing that really made it such a great day for them.
“They will be able to say they played at Highbury against Arsenal and nobody can take the memories away from them-you could see why playing at our place was a great day out for them and the fans.
“Franny Jeffers got a couple of goals and now he is making the squad every week I think he can only get better and better.
“He has plenty of pace and makes some great runs behind the defence-the trouble is for him is that there are so many good strikers at the club, but he has been working hard in training and really wants to make a go for it here.
“It is much harder to break through these days and that has changed so much since when I came through 11 years ago-you have to be an exceptional talent to make it .
“Football is a business nowadays though and mangers will buy in success if they have too-you just have to work as hard as you can to get a chance.”
31/01/03- Ray’s Anniversary Parade Drizzled On
Arsenal went to sleep in injury time and let 3- points slip at Anfeild.

Ray started, returning to his old position on the wing as Gilberto partnered Vieira in centre of midfield. Ray made his debut 11 years to the day at Anfeild, so it was a particularly special game for the Romford Legand
Liverpool started brightly but luckily Michael Owen seems to have lost all his confidence and can’t hit a giants barn door from half a foot. Just as Liverpool were looking more and more dominant Arsenal went down the other end and scored. Bergkamp delivered one of his wonderful weighted balls to Henry who zoomed into the box and shot. Dudek managed to save but the rebound fell to Pires who made no mistakes.

This sucker punch rattled Liverpool and Arsenal began to dominate. Only some good keeping from Dudek kept the score the same. Cygan headed in from a corner but it was cleared off the line by Cheyrou.
Henry then seemed to go into warp over-drive, he raced around Dudek but the angle was a bit too narrow to score.
After the break Liverpool equalised with a scorching shot from John Arne Riise . But ten minutes later Arsenal were a goal up when Bergkamp’s shot was deflected off Stephane “Hand-balling Cheat” Henchoz.
The Arsenal were dominant again and Liverpool found it difficult to get hold of the ball and as the Gunners passed the ball around as the clock ticked away. The home team was reduced to almost spectators and it looked like a certain 3 points. But no, at the start of extra time Liverpool were given a corner, despite the referee or the lines man having a clue weather it was or not. Heskey was able to header Dio’s cross into the net without even jumping up. It has to be said, being a goal up in injury time, Arsenal really should have defended the corner better. We can argue about the corner decision till we are blue in the face but the fact is we should have put the game beyond them way before that.
31/01/03- Man U Away Is "Hardly Ideal"
Here is Romford’s views on drawing Manchester United in the FA Cup from his Islington Gazette column-
“I suppose after getting a third division and then a non-league side we were due a Premiership side in the FA Cup – but going to Old Trafford is hardly ideal.
“That’s the great thing about the FA Cup though and although it’s going to be a big game we are al used to that at this club by now.
“People will probably make United favourites for it after they beat us before Christmas and they are at home.
“They certainly seemed to want it a bit more than we did that day and we will have to put that right in two weeks time.
“But we have got big results at Old Trafford before and now we’ll have to get another one-we feel we can beat them again but getting a draw and bringing them back to Highbury would also be a decent outcome.”
28/01/03- Ray’s Liverpool Preview
Here’s what Ray has to say about the Liverpool game from his column.
“On Wednesday we go to Anfeild and it’s strange to think it’s 11 years to the day since I made my début on the very same ground- I guess that shows how long I have been around.”
“It’s still one of the great grounds to play at but hopefully will do a bit better than that night when we lost 2-0.
“Liverpool have been on a bad run recently but they will raise their game against us and I think they have to get something out of the game to stay in tough with the top.
“The games between us are always close but we have just had the edge recently and hopefully we can continue that on Wednesday.
“We have started a nice little run going again and we want to continue it for as long as we can.”
28/01/03- Goliath Sits On David
Well, a difficult game to get exited about, unless you were a Farnborough player or supporter. Of course Ray’s first start for god knows how long was as reason.
The Farnborough what the whole of the Clock End and were determined to enjoy their 90 minutes of fame. Arsene Wenger fielded a pretty decent team , Vieira back from injury partnering Raymondo , Franny and Kanu up front , Pires and Kolo on the wings , Lauren ,Sol, Cygan and Gio in defence and Taylor in goal.
Arsenal started off sluggishly, Kanu lumbering around in the uninterested way we unfortunately expect these days. Ray had a shot on goal which produced a good save from the Boro keeper. Then after 19 minutes Arsenal got a corner taken by Van Bronckhorst and Campbell rose to head. Five minutes later Jeffers got his first of the afternoon after a neat cut-back from Toure.

As if Farnborough didn’t have a hard enough mountain to climb already, the had a player sent off. Christian Lee
tugged on Jeffer’s shirt as he ran into the box and was given his marching order. It was nice to see Ray being very prominent in trying to persuade the ref not to , but it really was a fair decision.
Down to 10 men, Farnborough really didn’t disgrace them selves and managed to keep Arsenal out ,Jeffers had a goal disallowed and Ray had a shot that rocketed over the bar. In the 68th minute Franny got his second when Gio crossed the ball from the byline for The Fox In The Box to head in .
It was about this time that some idiot decided to run onto the pitch to display his crown jewels to the whole of Highbury, judging by Ray’s reaction he was extremely amused by this ( I suspect Ray would have liked to be a streaker in another life).
Then ,shock, horror, Farnborough scored. Rocky Baptiste got the better of Pascal Cygan and after Taylor saved the first shot but Rock scored with the second attempt. As the Cock End exploded into a chorus of “ ROCKY, ROCKY, ROCKY”- you couldn’t help thinking it was nice for these part-timers to score a goal against Arsenal at Highbury. But it is also distinctly unsettling to see Cygan being made a fool of by a Conference player.
Bergkamp came on and scored in the 74th minute and the Lauren made in 5-1 four minutes later with a good solo effort. Jeffers missed out on a hat-trick for his 22nd birthday running onto a pass from Ray, but he blased his shot over the bar.
All in all Arsenal did enough without exerting them selves too much. Farnborough didn’t disgrace them selves either and in a lot of ways made more of a go of it than Oxford. Ray and Gio were both excellent, but I have to say despite his two goals Jeffer’s was disappointing. He has enough chances in the game and really should have scored about six. Maybe I am being fussy after the magnificence of Henry in the past few weeks.
23/01/03- Ray’s Farnborough Preview
Here’s Ray’s Views On Saturday’s Game Against Farnborough from his Islington Gazette Column-
“I can assure you no one will be treating Saturday’s FA Cup tie like a walk in the park.
“It will be the biggest match of their lives for the Farnborough boys but I can guarantee wont want to roll over and die and just enjoy the day.
“It’s their chance to pit themselves against some of the best players in the world and I am sure they will come to Highbury and give us a real battle.
“I am certainly hoping to play in the game and the FA Cup is always special-we have got to the last two finals and we want to get there again.
“ Some people say it’s a shame the game was switched but I think you can see Farnborough’s view-the chance to play somewhere like Highbury might not come up again and I’m sure the players are happier to come to us, regardless of the money.”
23/01/03- Dennis Isn't Dirty
Here is what Romford had to say about Sunday’s win against West Ham from his Islington Gazette Column-
“Sometimes in football you seem to get the rough end of decisions and I think West Ham were feeling this after Sunday’s game at Highbury.
“It’s always hard when you get a penalty and a red card at the same time-it happened to us a at Southampton a while back and it almost looses you the game there and then.
“Having said that I thought West Ham showed great character to come back into it and although we were always on to 5there were a few nervous looks going around before Thierry wrapped it up.
“The incident with Dennis Bergkamp and Lee Bowyer seems to have grabbed all the headlines and I can’t believe Dennis will get banned because of that.
“Although it might have warranted a free-kick at the time I don’t think Dennis meant to do it and it seems every thing we do is highlighted these days.
“Nobody could ever call Dennis a dirty player yet he is under threat from a ban again-hopefully the FA will see sense and that will be the end of it.
For me personally it was great to be back into action for the last 20 minutes and hopefully I can stay fit for a while now .
“It has been a very frustrating season for me and whenever I do play I feel in good nick so it’s feel doubly annoying to have to sit out so much of the season so far.
“Luckily we still everything to play for so I am coming back at the right time as we are going for trophies on three fronts.”
22/01/03- Revenge Of The Pink Parlour
There was an absolute gem in yesterday’s Evening Standard’s “Football Notebook”. Here is the anecdote in its entirety-
Comedian Alan Davies, a lifelong Gooner, gave a nice speech at the Football Writers' tribute dinner to Tony Adams.
He repeated a tale from Ray Parlour about how Arsene Wenger was dubbed 'Clouseau' by the Arsenal players.
Before one game the Frenchman ushered his players out into the tunnel before excusing himself to go to the toilet. Unfortunately, there was a security alert and the players were told to return to the dressing room. When Wenger re-emerged to find his squad milling around, he asked them what was going on. Up piped Ray Parlour, in his finest Peter Sellers impersonation: "There is a burm." To which Wenger replied, classically: "A burm?"
As everyone dissolved in laughter, Parlour continued: "Yes, a burm."
When the laughter had stopped, Wenger said: "Raymond . . . I do believe you are having a joke with me.''

I’m not sure about the design though. His neck in bleached out so the resembles a worm coming out of an apple.
21/01/03- Beauty and The Beast
With Ray Parlour still a little short of match fitness, Arsene Wenger opted for a central midfield pairing of Edu and Gilberto, hardly surprising since the Brazilian double act had done so well at Birmingham City. Vieira was rested to ensure he fully recovers from his groin strain.

This was always going to be an explosive match. West Ham fighting for their Premiership lives, Arsenal needing a win to maintain their lead at the top and "young lad" Lee Bowyer being present all combined to make for even more controversy than is usual in a televised Arsenal match.
The Gunners started well, a teasing cross by Henry after 3 minutes missing Bergkamp's outstretched leg by millimetres and going just wide.By now Arsenal were running the match and on 11 minutes a sublime through ball by Bergkamp was latched onto by Pires who was clearly pulled back by Lomas. Penalty and straight red card. The only controversial element to it was Roeder's accusation of diving post match. Henry coolly dispatched the pen and The Gunners looked to be cruising. They created chance after chance against West Ham's 10 men, with only some inspired goalkeeping from England's number 32 David James keeping them in it.
However Edu decided to gift the Irons a chance by tamely passing back to Seaman, allowing Defoe to nip in and bury it. Arsenal continued to press and really should have had a hatfull. West Ham emerged with renewed purpose for the 2nd half and in truth the Gunners were struggling. Wenger, perhaps sensing that it was going to take something special to win the game, sent on Ray Parlour in a straight swap for his Brazilian compatriot Edu.

Almost immediately Ray got stuck and tenaciously won the ball in the middle of the park. The ball eventually made its way out to Bergkamp who was assaulted by a West Ham player and stupidly swung an arm. This caught the inrushing Lee Bowyer, whom I'm sure was going to try and legitimately win the ball. Bergkamp slapped Lee a good'un and he went down like a lady in the passenger seat of Dave Pleat's motor - quick. He's just a young lad so I'm sure it really hurt. The referee strangely decided all was well and allowed Bergkamp to cross for Henry to head, yes that's right head, home.
Having regained the lead, Arsenal were never likely to relinquish it again and a sublime move was finished by Henry in fine style for his hattrick.
Arsenal on the day were superb. Some of the football they played was frankly awesome and it was a real privilege to see a striker so on top of his game. Henry was devastating and I don't recall seeing him so up for a League game. Have a look at the picture of him "celebrating" with the prone Lee Bowyer after his 2nd goal. The man was possessed!
Such a pity that this was all overshadowed by Roeders post-match comments. Claiming Pires dived is dishonest and I'd hope he realises that now. Saying "Bergkamp elbowed my player, you could see his hand hit him in the face" is frankly laughable. I wasn't aware that Dennis' elbow was on his hand.
Overall a thoroughly deserved victory that keeps The Arsenal 5 points clear at the top. Parlour had an excellent half hour and must surely be in contention for a start away at Liverpool.

18/01/03-Ray Ready For West Ham
Ray is fit again and should play in Sunday's game at home to West Ham
18/01/03-Ray's Hammers Preview
Here’s Ray’s thoughts on this weekends opposition West Ham from his Islington Gazette Column-
“Now West Ham come to Highbury on Sunday and having supported them as a kid it’s sad for me to seem them at the wrong end of the table.
“I am still sure they will get out of trouble though and I have said all along that Glenn Roeder is the right man for the job. With the players they have got they should be in the top half.
“Lee Bowyer could be the signing they need to spark them and although he has come with a bit of baggage West Ham could be a new start for him.
“Players can get isolated when they move away from home and I think now Lee is back in London it might help him.
“He knows he hasn’t always done the right thing in the past but he is a talented player and I am sure he will do well for them.
“Hopefully I will be involved on Sunday-I came through 90 minutes for the reserves in a friendly on Tuesday and am ready to go again.”
16/01/03-Ray Returns in Friendly
Ray played a full 90 minutes in a specially arranged friendly with Luton. Arsenal won 2-0 with Franny Jeffers scoring both goals . Here’s the report from
Arsenal.com.
16/01/03-Ray On Tel's Ton
Here’s Ray’s views on Thierry Henry’s 100 goals for Arsenal from his Islington Gazette column- “It’s hard to believe that Thierry Henry has already scored 100 goals for us and the way is going you would have to think he will be the first to get 200 for the club.
The key for Thierry is that he settled very quickly in London and that can make a big difference for a player.
“He had a tough time over in Italy where Juventus were playing him out of position and he found the attention over there a bit too much-in London he can be himself a bit more, he has as settled life and a English girlfriend and you can see the benefit of that on the pitch.
“All the talk this week seems to be comparing Thierry to Ian Wright and I’m just glad I have lucky enough to play with both of them.
“Premiership defenders are becoming more and more frightened of Thierry’s pace and when he gets a couple of yards on you there is no catching him as we saw again of Sunday.
“Wrighty was a different kind of player altogether, more of a poacher but you always knew with him that if he got the chance he would stick it away. He was second to none in that respect.
“When Wrighty set that record in 1997 I think we all thought it would never be broken so it just shows how good Thierry has been that we are already talking about him breaking it.”
13/01/03-New Member For 100 Club
Thierry Henry scored his 100th goal for Arsenal as The Gunners beat Birmingham City 4-1away.
Ray didn’t play as he has yet to recover from the calf injury that has kept him out since before Christmas. Vieira was out as well so Wenger fielded the unfamiliar Brazilian partnership of Edu and Gilberto in the centre of midfield.
The game was delayed for half an hour due to a flood light failure just before kick off.
Steve Bruce gave debuts to all his new January signings, French international Dugarry, ex-spud Stephen Clemence and ex-Tractor Boy Jamie Clapham. You could say it was a baptism of fire.

Henry put Arsenal 1-0 up after just 5 minutes racing on to a delicious ball from Dennis Bergkamp. Being 1-0 down didn’t deter City though who put on some decent pressure, Dugarry particularly looking threatening. But just when they seemed to be finding their feet in the game the ball fell kindly to Pires in their penalty box who blasted it into the net. This seemed to knock the stuffing out City as Arsenal started turning up the class.
In the second half Bergkamp crossed to ball dangerously towards goal and Lauren headed it in deflecting of a hopeless Michael Johnson on the way. Then three minutes later Henry linked up well with Wiltord and Pires went round Vickers and coolly scored his 100th Arsenal goal.
4-0 up Wenger happily was able to make some changes, van Bronckhorst came on for Edu, Kolo Toure for Pires and Franny Jeffers for Bergkamp.
All in all a professional performance from Arsenal especially Bergkamp and Henry the two members of the Arsenal 100 Club.
13/01/03-Ray Back In Training
Here’s some good news from Ray on his injury from his Islington gazette column-
“I am in training again following my calf injury and have not lost a lot of fitness since I last played against Valencia and then Spurs.
“My training has gone really well and I was training hard with the fitness instructor earlier this week before joining in fully with the rest of the team. Its now down to the manager now and hopefully I can impress during training this week.
13/01/03-It’s Hard To Catch A Keeper
In his Islington gazette column, Ray talk of the difficulties of finding in Arsenal a new goalkeeper-
“The transfer window has opened again and the manager has probably got a rough idea of who he wants to bring in a goalkeeping cover. Rame Shaaban broke his leg which is bad news and then Stuart Taylor broke his finger.
“It is worrying because we have to rely on David Seaman to keep fit. He does stay fit for a lot of the time but you never know. The manager probably knows who he wants but it is getting him at a price that is good for the club. A lot of teams will know that Arsenal are looking for a keeper and will try and push the price up as well.”
13/01/03-It’s A Fairytail for Farnborough
Here’s Ray’s views on Saturday before lasts FA Cup game with Oxford and his views on the fourth found tie with Farnborough from his Islington gazette column-
“It was great to see Dennis Bergkamp score his 100th goal for the club this week and although there is all this talk about him retiring I am sure he has got a lot left in the tank.
“I know Dennis loves Arsenal and loves London and has done brilliantly for Arsenal in reaching 100 goals for the club. He is one of the greatest signings Arsenal has ever made and is a very important player for us.
“He has the ability to unlock defences and that is something that you definitely need to be successful especially with so many teams defending so deeply in many of our matches.
“Saturday’s win in the FA Cup over Oxford had a strange atmosphere. They had a lot of fans there but there was not a lot of noise. Again it was a good performance really and we did the job that needed to be done.
“It was a bit like a training game really but we still worked hard to win the ball back when it was lost.
“ The draw against Farnborough in the fourth round just shows the beauty of the FA Cup and it like a fairytale for them against the double champions.
“There were the big ties in the fourth round such as Manchester United against West Ham but everyone seemed to be talking about our tie with Farnborough. Whether the match is played at Farnborough or Highbury we will need to be professional.
“It will be a difficult decision for them to choose where the game will be played. If it is at Highbury then they will gain more financially but if it was at Farnborough they would have more of a chance of winning because the pitch is not likely to be as good .
“But I think it’s a great tie.”
13/01/03-Christmas Round Up
Arsenal cruised to victory at home to Middlesborough the Saturday before Christmas, with an early headed goal by Sol Campbell and a late strike by Bobby Pires. 'Boro were dire, never threatening the ageing Seaman in goal and in truth the Gunners could have won by considerably more if they'd bothered to get out of second gear. Ray Parlour was a late withdrawal from this match, injuring his calf in the warm up sufficiently badly to play no part in the hectic holiday programme.
On Boxing day The Arsenal traveled to West Brom, a potential banana skin, if ever there was one. The Baggies struck after only 3 minutes, poor marking giving some old journeyman a free header from a corner. Arsenal rallied in the second half, Jeffers leveling before Thierry Henry pounced with just minutes left, turning on his blistering pace to round the keeper and slot home for a just about deserved 2 - 1 victory.
The Sunday before New Year we entertained Liverpool at The Home Of Football. Toadalike manager Houllier seemed to have forgotten to pack any strikers or attacking midfielders as Arsenal lined up against a 4 - 6 -0 formation. Predictably one way traffic ensued with the Arsenal refusing to get sucked too far up the pitch and 'Pool content to sit deep and hoof the ball upfield. Eventually Owen limped off with (yet another) groin twinge to be replaced by some overpaid mediocre bloke. Arsenal by now were far too slack at the back and a mix up between Keown and Seaman almost gifted the Scousers a goal. Ash cleared one off the line from the resulting corner and suddenly 'Pool looked almost interested. Baros broke free and Sol brought him down for a cast iron penalty dispatched by the one who looks like a coin chucker but isn't. Arsenal pressed for an equaliser against what was now a 6 - 4 - 0 formation and were rewarded when Jeffers, who'd come on as a sub, turned smartly and forced Riise to tug him back. He then tumbled like Owen in the box and the ref had no hesitation in giving the pen, which Henry coolly dispatched to make it 1 - 1. Interestingly, the entire staff and supporters of former big club Liverpool suffered a collective bout of amnesia and complained bitterly about referees costing them big matches. Cardiff in 2001 anyone ? Rush goalie Henchoz mean anything to you Gerard ?
On New Years Day Chelsea visited Highbury. They may be geographical neighbours, but the Gooners wasted no time in reminding them of the light years between the clubs in terms of trophies. Perhaps shocked to be playing on a pitch with green stuff on, (it's grass Graeme), the blues froze in front of the Arsenal goal despite having the lions share of the midfield. Arsenal went ahead after 10 minutes through a Desailly own goal. Monkey lookalike Zola who looked tired after spending most of the post Christmas period playing with his new car tyre on a rope was subbed after being crunched by Ralph. The Reds finally added a second through a fine strike from the edge of the box by Gio and it looked game over when Cudicini let Henry's tame shot squirm through for 3 - 0. However bad defending let Chelsea pull one back with 10 minutes left and nerves jangled seriously when Seaman fumbled shortly after to allow former big club player Petit to score. Arsenal held on to win 3 -2.
So 10 points out of 12 over the holiday period and the Gunners remain top of the League, 5 points clear.

07/01/03-Ray Sorry About Injury Set Back
I’ve been off on my Christmas Hols of the last couple weeks so sorry the site hasn’t been up dated for a while. As you all know its been a pretty good festive season for Arsenal but not so much for Ray who has missed all the games over Christmas with a calf strain. Here is a some what late Ray’s Islington gazette Column from before the Oxford game-
“I was quite surprised with Liverpool and their tactics in the first half on Sunday.
They did not come forward at all and if we had scored in the first half it would have definitely opened the game up a bit.
“They defended very well overall. They came forward a bit in the second half and you expect that and to be fair they did not want to loose the game after the run they have been having and most teams are happy to get a point at Highbury.
“They were 1-0 up and could have won the game but we got the penalty . I could not see it from where I was sitting at the time but looking it a lot of referees would not have given it. It was one of those where some you get some you don’t.
“Francis Jeffers has done very well recently. He scored against West Brom last week and came off the bench to get us a penalty on Sunday.
“Francis is a great young player with lots of potential. He is going to learn a lot from our strikers.
“His ankle is a lot better and he is going to need a run in the team some time soon. Quality strikers are hard to find.
“The F.A cup starts for us on Saturday when we play Oxford United at Highbury and the competition has always been very special to me .
“I remember the F.A Cup finals when I was a kid and the whole point of the FA Cup is to play teams like Oxford just like when we went to Carlisle last season.
“We need to treat the Oxford game like we would if we were playing Manchester United and the FA Cup are always very hard games.
Oxford are a positive side who are playing well and they will come into the game with nothing to loose.
“If we can play at our best then I am sure we will walk away comfortable winners.
Maybe the manager will rest a few after a busy Christmas and he maybe will mix it up a little. He will look to see who is tired after the games we have had recently and decide then.
“Unfortunately I will not be fit in time after I injured my calf last week.
“I trained on Friday before the Middlesbrough Game and I felt really good before hand. But then my calf stiffened up and I trained and it got a bit worse.
“Then I was warming up against Middlesbrough and felt as though someone had stuck a knife in the back of my calf. But it is not a major injury and nothing to do with the knee injury I had recently.
“It was maybe because I was out for 13 weeks with the knee injury and then had hard games against Valencia and then we had the North London derby. It was very frustrating being out again and I though I had a chance of playing in the center of midfield.
“But I have been lucky over the years with no major injuries and hopefully I will only be out for a week and then I can start playing again.”
20/12/02-Lets Make 2003 Even Better!
Here is Rays views on the race for the title and the games over the Christmas period from his Islington Gazette column-
“It’s been brilliant for me to be involved again and I know that the Christmas period gives me a great chance to make up on a lot of football I have missed.
“Obviously with so many games coming up the manager might want to chop and change the team a bit but I want to be involved if I can be.
“The Christmas period is always vital and we have some massive games like Liverpool and Chelsea at home-but it is just as important that we go to West Brom on Boxing day and win there.
“They will be desperate to beat us and it’s those results that count just as much as beating your rivals for the title.
"We are a point ahead at the top and we have to settle for that –Manchester United have come back well in the last few weeks but we always knew that would happen and I am sure they will drop a few more points along the way."
Ray then continued saying, “With the Champions League out of the way for a while we can look to our league form and with four games in 12 days you can make or loose a lot of ground.
Hopefully we can start it off with a win over Boro on Saturday and then we have that trip to West Brom. Like most years we meet in a hotel on Christmas day to prepare for the game and as a professional footballer you get use to it at this time of year.”
But we know what is expected of us, and after dropping a few points recently we want to make sure we have a good run-2002 was a great year for every one connected with Arsenal, but we want to make 2003 an even better one!”
