Rotherham and District Ornithological Society (RDOS) was formed in 1974 to promote an interest in wild birds, their habitat and their conservation by means of lectures, discussions and group and individual meetings.
The Society is affiliated to the British Trust For Ornithology (BTO) and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (Y.W.T) and identifies itself with the activities of those organisations and any other bodies that provide an outlet for its work.
During the year the Society organises regular group field meetings including autumn and Winter Coach Trips, to areas of particular ornithological interest. From September to May regular monthly indoor meetings are held on the second Friday of each month at the United Reform Church Hall, Broom, Rotherham with leading speakers on subjects of interest to birdwatchers as well as talks by local birdwatchers and reports of the Society’s work. The Society also publishes an informal magazine called ‘Chat’ that is distributed free to all members three times a year and which contains Society news, comment, articles of ornithological interest and reports of field studies.
In order to raise money for the protection and conservation of birds locally the Society has formed a Charity Fund, which has been approved as a charity by the Charity Commissioners. The RDOS Charity Fund is always pleased to receive donations, however small, in order to enable it to continue its work in the area of bird protection.
