Good and Evil

a) Describe Christian teachings about the Devil.

b) Explain how Christians might respond to the idea that a loving God allows evil into the world.

c) 'Suffering is good for people'. Discuss.

An answer by Amy Ashby:

a) Christian teachings about the Devil or Satan tell us that the Devil is used as an explanation for evil.  The Devil is blamed for all evil and suffering in the world.

Satan is mentioned in the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments. in the story of Adam and Eve, known as 'The Fall', Satan is represented by a snake who tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit. In the story of Job, Job was tempted to turn his back on God. He put up with great suffering but refused to let it affect his faith in God. In the New Testament the Devil again is portrayed as a tempter. This time he tempts Jesus while in the desert to turn his back on God.

In the Bible Satan is shown as Temptation. Satan is seen as tempting people to turn their back on God and encouraging them into doing bad things. Modern ideas tell us that evil is man made; that it is caused by mankind disobeying God. Some believe the Devil is an actual force, whereas others believe the Devil is a metaphor for evil: a personification of Temptation.

b) God allows evil into the world becomes of free will. God gave people free will, a choice of whether to follow God's rules or disobey them. The fall is the story of Adam and Eve which explains how mankind disobeyed God;

 all evil is shown as a consequence if humankind's disobedience. If God did not give us free will we would never have disobeyed God and there would be no evil or suffering. People believe suffering is a test of Christian belief in God; to see if they turn their back on God. Many Christians believe suffering can be used to set an example to others so that the world can become a better place. Christians believe that God sent his son Jesus to encourage people to put their faith back in God. Jesus died on a cross, Christians believe to atone for everybody's sins

c) I believe that suffering is good for people because it can help others. For example, Roy Castle had lung cancer caused by passive smoking and used his suffering to show people what passive smoking does. He made people realize what they were doing. He wanted people to be more careful. Roy’s suffering may have prevented more suffering to other people.

Some suffering is not good; for example, people who purposely cause suffering to others, such as in the case of murder. As well as the victim losing their life, a great deal of suffering is caused to the family and friends. This kind of suffering is bad and does not help anyone or set an example; all it does is cause suffering which wasn't necessary. This is an example of human made evil.
