Autumn Term

Many religions have special festivals at this time of year. Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with the joyful Eid-Ul-Fitr. For many other religions 'light' is the main theme of their late autumn celebrations.

25th October 2003. Hindus and Sikhs celebrate Divali. For Hindu's this is a festival of lights to welcome the New Year and Lakshmi, the goddess of good fortune.

Loi Krathong. At the Ist full moon in November, people in Thailand (Buddhists) float little flower boats on the river with a candle in each to say thank you to the river.

Bodhi Day is the day when Buddhists celebrate the Buddha's Enlightenment. This year it occurs on 8th December.

20th - 27th December. Jews celebrate Hanukkah, a festival of light to celebrate the miracle of Hanukkah following the rededication of the Temple after the Maccabaean Wars.

Advent (30th November) & Christmas (25th December). This is a special time of year for Christians as they prepare for and then welcome Jesus, 'The Light', into the world.
