WEETABIX CARDS

Weetabix Limited, Burton Latimer, Kettering, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom inserted collectable giveaway trade cards in their packets of breakfast cereals. The first cards were inserted in 1959 and the last in 1994. Of the roundly 40 sets of cards the company has produced it will probably be most remembered for the Stereo View cards of the 1960’s and the Dr. Who cards of the 1970’s. Collectable cards were inserted in packets of cigarettes prior to 1900. Brooke Bond Tea experimented with inserting cards in the early 1950’s and found they were a very successful means of increasing sales so continued to produce further series of cards. Weetabix must also have thought that inserting cards in their packets would also increase sales but by the late 1990’s children now needed more of an enticement that a mere trading card insert so both Weetabix and Brooke Bond have ceased to use them as a promotional tool.

SANITARIUM HEALTH FOOD COMPANY

The Sanitarium Health Food Company of Australia also produced trade cards for insertion into its cereal packets. I am not sure if there was any financial link between the company and Weetabix but Sanitarium did produce weet-bix and weeta flakes (see card back below). In the 1960’s they also produced some series of stereo cards in a similar format to those produced by Weetabix. Roy Hindle provided information on these cards.
