This is the family tree of one of the families that has the surname Reynolds. Related surnames are Clift, Coulston, Dean, Kearns, Kershaw, Lowthian, Park, Ripley, Smith, Sparks and Tayler. This site was created for two original reasons. Firstly my Grandmother Alice Lowthian Reynolds gave me a family tree she had written out in the early 1960's and knowing my interest in collecting asked me to keep it so that the family history would be preserved. Secondly a cousin who has only recently learned that he is related to the Reynolds family asked me to provide details of the family tree. As the Internet is now available I decided that I would fulfil these requests as it would answer these requests and also assist others, for example the Canadian branch of the Lowthian family, to trace their ancestors. As with any family there are enclosed in this document triumphs and disasters and events that will bring gladness to your heart or a tear to your eye. I have just recorded the information as I know it or have been told it. I am though more than willing to add new information to this tree to improve/extend it's accuracy and include any comments that you may wish to express. I may have more photographs if you are interested in a particular person. I also understand the program I have used can be manipulated to remove the details of any living member who requests it personally.
Updated 31st August, 2008 I have spent more time researching early family members, Great Great Grandfather William Reynolds had four brothers for example. I have also added some more photographs. More recent family events are also noted though I tend to be brief on details of living relatives unless they send me additional information. I have had a lot of problems with my computer so this update has been delayed. Also I am sorry to say I have upset at least one relative in attempting to record correct information which is the last thing I would wish to do. This is a very sad situation, families should value each other and do their best not to fall out with each other. I just want to provide a resource that relatives will find useful and enjoyable and hopefully derive some enjoyment from providing it.
Updated 5th August, 2007. Over two years have passed since the last update and more photographs and information have been received from family members, I have even included a few photographs of my own. I found a postcard of what Major Reynolds did in the ASC and have also found more details of his brothers and sisters. Francis was also able to show other members of the family photographs as my father’s funeral.
Updated 27th January, 2005. In 2004 I looked at Major Reynolds military records at Kew, obtained copies of his birth and his sons birth certificates and the marriage certificates for the Kershaw/Lowthian Marriage and the Kershaw/Ripley marriage. I also looked at Kershaw’s in the Leeds censuses. I have also added some photographs sent by a cousin who lives in the U.S.A. I now have an 1840’s address for the Reynolds family in the part of Surrey, which is now London.
Updated 14th February, 2004. In the two years since the last update the family archive of photographs, which were being looked after by Daphne Reynolds, have been examined by Philip Dean Reynolds and Beryl Pearson. Francis Wright is currently holding these family photographs in trust. I have tried to put them into a logical order and noted the information gained while they were being examined. Alas there are some photos that a name cannot be given. Many more images have now been included for the first time. I have also been able to examine a U.K. census for 1881 and this has expanded the information for Major Reynolds’s family and also the Kershaw’s in Leeds. Francis has been able to put together an album of photographs with a story line, which hopefully some of you will be able to see on some future occasion. I also hope to produce a more “user friendly” alternative family tree of a text with photos type of approach for people who prefer a storybook type of tree. The current programme I am using has all the details, notes and photographs but is somewhat academic in the form of presentation
Updated 6th October, 2002. I have looked at census records for Temple Sowerby for 1861-1901 and confirmed the details for the children of Abraham Lowthian. I also had web contact from a relative of Eliza who married Abraham in 1865 who told me that she was called Eliza Clift Dean rather than Eliza Clift. This is interesting, as I hadn’t realised that Dean was a family surname. It has been used since for my brothers middle name, my fathers middle name and originally for his great uncle. My cousin David named his eldest son Philip Dean after my father so he perpetuates the name for his lifetime. So if anyone were looking for a middle name with significance for their new child, choosing Dean would perpetuate and honour former and current family members.
Updated 20th January, 2002. Information on David Reynolds family expanded.
Updated 29th /31st December, 2001. More corrections and clarifications added. New details of a second Colonel Kearns who seems to be related in some way to our Kearns relatives.
Up dated 17th November, 2001. Image of Abraham Lowthian added, some corrections made and Keith Harris’s family have been added. I also previously realised that the programme was reversing the date and month on dates of birth if I just entered numbers. Hopefully I have now corrected these and entered the correct date and month.
