After a series of interviews about our requests to join up 2 CONC , I found that I had been accepted to join as a joiner, but not as I expected in the Royal En 2 CONC gineers, but in the RAMC, {Royal Army Medical Corps} I was naturally puzzled by this but acce 2 CONC pted it as normal procedure. This was unfortunate for me, as three days later; on Sept.30 I receive 2 CONC d a telegram telling me that I was now the proud father of Paul. My father became il 2 CONC l in 1988 and subsequently died of a malignant brain tumor. During his life he suffered a ch 2 CONC emical imbalance, inherent in our side of the Reynolds family which caused severe depression 2 CONC . His father drowned at Morecambe Bay whilst convalescing from similar symptoms and it is pop 2 CONC ularly believed in the family he committed suicide because he knew that area very well and th 2 CONC e tide comes in faster than a galloping horse they used to say and he could not have wittingl 2 CONC y been cut off by the tide as he was. They determined the time of death by the time on his fo 2 CONC b watch which obviously stopped when it got soaking wet. Nowadays there are pharmaceutical dr 2 CONC ugs which can cure this dreadful disease that they both suffered from, but at the time of Dad 2 CONC dy's illnesses the drugs were primitive and ECT was used without consent. He was born at 3 Manor Place. He served for 20 year 2 CONC s and 26 days as a soldier regiment unknown. His son's birth certificate records him as a Sa 2 CONC rgeant Major in the Army Service Corps on 22nd December, 1876 but it is not clear if all of h 2 CONC is junior service was in the ASC. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 22nd April, 1878 his Officers record commences, presumably training. On 1st June, 1878 h 2 CONC e was commissioned as a Sub Assistant Commander (Lieutenant) in the Commissariat and Transpor 2 CONC t Department, an earlier version of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. and on 31st January, 188 2 CONC 0 became a Quartermaster at Shorncliffe, Kent. The 1881 census show his location as bein 2 CONC g the Royal Artillery Barracks, Cheriton Kent. On 14th August, 1882 he undertook a 15 day voy 2 CONC age to Eqypt and then spent one and a quarter years in the Egyptian campaign. 2 CONT Sir Garnet Wolseley's campaign of 1882, completed in just four and a half weeks, was an almos 2 CONC t 'textbook' operation, carefully planned and executed with masterly competence. In 1881 th 2 CONC e Egyptian army mutinied from Tewfik Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt, whose father's reforming po 2 CONC licies had bankrupted the country, and forced him to appoint Said Ahmed Arabi as Minister o 2 CONC f War in early 1882. In March Arabi was made a Pasha and from this time on acted as a dictato 2 CONC r. The British, already worried at Arabi's rise were further concerned when his inflamed supp 2 CONC orters threatened to commit a massacre of all foreigners in Egypt. The Victorian press helpe 2 CONC d to stoke public outrage at events in Egypt, and this, combined with the impassioned demand 2 CONC s of Arabi that the foreigner be driven out of Egypt and massacres of Christians in Alexandri 2 CONC a prompted an armed British response, first in the form of a bombardment of Alexandria by th 2 CONC e Royal Navy, and then as an expeditionary force under Lieutenant-General Wolseley. In littl 2 CONC e over six weeks in August and September a British Army was safely landed, outflanked it's en 2 CONC emy and, after a series of small-scale initial clashes, utterly routed the Egyptian army in b 2 CONC attle at Tel-el-Kebir after that most audacious of military movements, a night march. The ca 2 CONC pital, Cairo, was occupied on the next day and with it's fall, the campaign was effectively o 2 CONC ver. Wolseley's quick success re-established British control of the country and deposed Arabi 2 CONC , who was subsequently brought to trial and exiled to Ceylon. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was awarded the Egyptian War Medal for Egypt, a bronze star and also a Khedives Star fro 2 CONC m the Egyptian Govenrment. After a return voyage of 18 days and 3 months leave he was then ba 2 CONC sed for the next 2 years 2 months at Aldershot and later Shorncliffe. In July 1886 he was po 2 CONC sted to Dublin until the close of 1887. He then spent the next five and a quarter years in B 2 CONC elfast. In 1888 the Service reverted to the name of Army Service Corps. Shortly after arrivi 2 CONC ng in Belfast he was granted the honorary rank of Captain. On 27th March, 1893 he was retire 2 CONC d on ¹200 p.a.. 2 CONT 2 CONT However, probably due to the manpower demands of the Boer War he was reemployed from the reti 2 CONC red list in January, 1901as officer in charge stationed in Dublin. The microfilm is difficul 2 CONC t to read but it looks like he was stationed at Foxford or Wexford. His record does not stat 2 CONC e when he was stood down. It was probably October, 1902 when the Army List states he was mad 2 CONC e an Honorary Major presumably for pension purposes. He was though not classed as a non effec 2 CONC tive officer until October, 1914 when at the age of 75 he was presumably considered too old t 2 CONC o serve in the First World War. 2 CONT 2 CONT He died in 1923 in Llandaff and was probably living with his son William. His effects amount 2 CONC ed to ¹40 9s 7d 2 CONT 2 CONT An item that led to confusion in the research was that on 7th January, 1882 a totally differe 2 CONC nt Thomas Reynolds was transferred with the Honorary Rank of Captain as Quartermaster of th 2 CONC e Devonshire Regiment. He also served in Eqypt but between June and August, 1882. 2 CONT Information from Army lists from Alan Henshall Curator RDG Museum and Thomas's military recor 2 CONC d at National Archives. For full details see source lists 2 CONT 2 CONT The Family story was that he was a Major in the Dragoon Guards, a regular soldier. Curragh C 2 CONC amp was as a location also the fact that he won some medals. He was mentioned as being in th 2 CONC e Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. This does not appear to be strictly correct. In 1935 the 5t 2 CONC h Inniskilling Dragoon Guards had the words Royal added. In 1922 the 5th Dragoon Guards an 2 CONC d the 6th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards were amalgamated to form the 5th/6th Dragoons but th 2 CONC e title was unpopular and in 1927 the title was changed to 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards 2 CONC . . 2 CONT The 6th Dragoon Guards (Carbiniers) wore a blue serge frock C1902 and a fireman style of helm 2 CONC et.. The Lancers were the Light Dragoons and wore the square topped Chapka's [The Victorian S 2 CONC oldier - National Army Museum] 2 CONT The 5th Dragoon Guards wore white over red plumes in their helmets and the 6th Dragoon Guard 2 CONC s wore a slim white plume. The 5th were known as the 5th Princess Charlotte of Wales's Drago 2 CONC on Guards [Head Dress of the British Heavy Cavalry]. However, Tom does not appear to have bee 2 CONC n in either regiment unless it was very early in his career.
