Before Baggage Reclaim, there was The Club Room... |
...Which was based in a function room above the Queens Arms pub in Islington. The landlord, Damian, allowed us to put on the
most extraordinary events on a weekly basis for about five years. The Club Room was initiated by guitarist href="http://www.shef.ac.uk/misc/rec/ps/efi/musician/mrussell.html">John
Russell and saxophonist Mike Walter. I stepped in after a few months, and Mike and I continued to run the club-
and some of its successors ("Reaction Time", "Civilisation", "Western Civilisation", "The Departure Lounge") for many years.
After I started Baggage Reclaim Mike continued the Club Room for many many months in Shoreditch, before finally calling
it
a day in 2002. At least 250 concerts, each with two or three acts on- it was quite an achievement, and one that makes me knackered
just thinking about it! Amongst all the free-jazz honking, improv rumble-scraping and splanged-out weirdness there was a real
underground spirit of adventure there, which lives on in other long running London institutions such as the Bohman Brothers'
events at the Bonnington Centre and Hugh Metcalfe's seemingly eternal Klinker" operation.
