| If
you don't know that Ronan Keating came from
Boyzone - well, where have you been?
Check out this bit of the page for brief
info on the huge all-male pop group that Ro
began his remarkable music career in!
Boyzone was originally formed as a six-membered group following
an audition in Dublin, in November 1993. The original members were Ronan
Keating, Stephen Gately, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, Richie Rock and Mark
Walton. The latter two weren't included and Mikey Graham became the
group's eventual fifth member.
Boyzone made their debut in 1993
releasing their single 'Working My Way Back To You'. Initial reviews
of the group's music were down but in 1994 the single 'Love Me For A Reason'
broke ground reaching the number two spot in the singles charts. Following
this, Boyzone continued to show their excellence with further top three singles
including the Cat Stevens' song, 'Father And Son'. It was the song
'Words'
(a former hit for the Bee Gees) that finally won the number one chart position. |

The singles flawless successes
remained with subsequent releases and the albums also achieved popularity.
'Where We Belong', the group's third album release involved much
collaboration with for example Johnny Douglas who worked alongside other world
famous artists like George Michael and the All Saints.
Boyzone have varied their style of
music adopting more recently rhythm and blues ballads and much more evident in
their early releases up-tempo tunes and "hi-NRG" dance songs.
Awards for their releases include
the Ivor Novello Award for the single 'Picture Of You' and four Irish Music Awards.
Television is no stranger to the
group. Ronan has presented the MTV Awards, the Eurovision Song
Contest and Miss World. Stephen has presented the 1998 Smash
Hits Poll Winners Party.
Ronan Keating took on the solo
challenge by releasing his debut single 'When You Say Nothing At All' in
1999. This song was particularly associated with the hit movie, 'Notting
Hill' starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. It pipped
the number 1 post in the UK singles charts but missed out on winning the
Brittania Record Of The Year 1999 award which went instead to the all-new
male group, Westlife ironically managed by Ronan together with Louis
Walsh.

The most recent album, '...By
Request' is the very best of Boyzone and reflects their success and
popularity. Tracks featured are true favourites including the Tracy
Chapman song, 'Baby, Can I Hold You' (Ronan being a personal fan of
Chapman), 'All That I Need', 'When The Going Gets Tough' and 'You Needed
Me'. In late November 1999 there was the release of a brand new single, 'Every
Day I Love You' which made its debut at the No. 3 UK singles chart position.
Also in 1999 Ronan won a deserving
Smash Hits award for being voted the best father whilst Stephen enjoyed the
title of being best hero winning a Smash Hits award too.
Currently the new
millennium saw in a new Boyzone tour in the U.K. and Ireland which proved
highly popular. Boyzone are one of the most successful
all-male pop groups around and have produced a string of albums and
singles that prove their excellence in the music
industry and which establishes them as one of the
most successful music artists ever.

Now
you've got to know the link between this
highly popular group and Ronan!
Westlife are a massive success and you can
find out more about this group that Ro once
managed...
Westlife was formed
originally from six members but this became
five and the band called themselves
'Westside' but they found this was not an
original name and 'Westlife' came into
being. The members: Shane Filan, Mark
Feehily, Bryan McFadden, Kian Egan and Nicky
Byrne began their music careers as the guest
performers on a show by another big all-male
group, the Backstreet Boys, in Dublin,
Ireland in 1998. In April of the
following year, Westlife debuted on the UK
singles charts with 'Swear It Again' and
this was an immediate success. It
scored the No.1 spot. This was
followed by 'If I Let You Go' which too
became a No.1 single and Westlife continued
on their run of the charts striking the No.1
position in the UK singles chart with each
and every subsequent release. |
| Amongst
the many No.1s, these included 'Flying Without
Wings' and the double A-side 'Seasons In The Sun/I
Have A Dream'. 'I Have A Dream' featured on
a special tribute recording to the massive Swedish
band, ABBA, titled 'ABBAMania'.
Westlife was once managed by two
big names in the music business: Ronan Keating of
Boyzone and Louis Walsh. Ronan decided to
leave management in 2000 when his own solo career
and involvement with Boyzone was becoming in
itself a busy schedule. By now, Westlife had
already strived forward as a huge pop act.
Back at the end of 1999, Westlife won the
Britannia 'Record Of The Year' with 'Flying
Without Wings' to beat Ronan's own 'When You Say
Nothing At All'.
By mid-2000, Westlife moved
forward to promote themselves big in the US.
They had already become recognised as a huge pop
act across Europe and Asia. The band had
already released their massive debut album
self-titled 'Westlife' which
became No.1 in the UK.
It was in 2000 that Westlife went onto release
their second album, 'Coast To Coast', another No.1
album in the UK. From
this came another string of highly-successful
No.1s including 'My Love', 'Against All Odds'
which was performed in duet with the famous Mariah
Carey and 'I Have A Dream'. At the end of
2000, Westlife celebrated another victory with
their second 'Record Of The Year' award.
The start of 2001 saw Westlife
record a special track: the cover version of Billy
Joel's 'Uptown Girl' for Comic Relief,
which scored the UK No.1 singles position.
Towards the end of 2001,
Westlife released their third and more personal
album, 'World Of Our Own', yet another No.1 album
in the UK, which includes the No.1
hit, 'Queen Of My Heart'. The album features
some superb upbeat tracks such as the excellent
title track, 'World Of Our Own' as well as some
powerful ballads and many tracks have been written
by the members of Westlife themselves representing
their progressive talents as professional song
performers and songwriters. Towards the end
of 2001, Westlife celebrated award victories, for
example, in the Smash Hits Poll Winner's Party
where they won Best Album for 'World Of Our Own'
and Best Band.
A new year and in 2002 Westlife
received further rewards. In February,
Westlife won the Best Pop Act award at the Brit
Awards and only a few days later they made it big
again by scoring their tenth UK No.1 with the
massive upbeat song, 'World Of Our Own'.
Westlife have
established themselves as a quality music act with
successes upon successes that's unbeatable! |

| Eurovision
Song Contest 1997 |
| You may have
heard of this massive annual song contest
that sees entries from all over Europe take
part called the 'Eurovision Song
Contest'. Well, in 1997, Ronan was one
of the hosts of this major event and what a
great job he did! Read on to find out
more about this event and Ro's part!
In 1997, the 'Eurovision
Song Contest' was held at The Point Theatre
in Dublin, Ireland, following the win of
Eimear Quinn with 'The Voice' when she
represented Ireland in the previous
year. The presenters were Ronan
Keating and Carrie Crowley (pictured
right). The contest in its 42nd year
saw 25 countries take part. The
winning song was 'Love Shine A Light' for
the UK sung by Katrina & The
Waves. At the contest, Ronan had the
opportunity to perform alongside his mates
at Boyzone for 'Let The Message Run Free'
which received a real round of
applause. |

History of
Eurovision Song Contest
So what's the event all about?
Here's how it all started. It began in
May 1956 and derived from the popular San
Remo music festival in Italy. It
started out small with seven countries
taking part each with two entries.
Whichever country won the contest would be
the host for next year's event.
But the Eurovision Song
Contest has changed since then...now there
are about 23 countries which are eligible to
take part and there are a few rules in the
contest, one being that a song can no longer
be more than 3 minutes long plus the lowest
scoring five countries that take part will
be relegated from the next year's
contest! There are some exceptions to
those countries that put money to the event
including Germany and the UK. Until
recently, has any country been allowed to
sing their songs in English - this started
from 2000.
|
| In 1998, Ronan
took on another television presenting job,
this time for the 1998 'Miss World'
contest. His co-host was Eden Harel.
The contest took place in the Seychelles and
as well as the actual contest itself, Ronan
along with the lads at Boyzone sang the
single that they were soon to release at the
time called 'I Love The Way You Love Me'
which featured later on Boyzone's 'Where We
Belong' album. |
|
 |
More TV
work came Ro's way in February 1998 when he took
on an exciting BBC television entertainment show
called 'Get Your Act Together'. This was one
of these shows where budding hopefuls battled it
out on the performing stage for the chance to win
a record contract and become a recognised popstar.
Ronan took up the major position of hosting this
great programme and what a superb job he
did! He gave the contestants full
encouragement and Ronan felt that it was an
exciting way to get people to fulfil their dreams
to become big pop acts! Ronan said:
"This is a great chance to help make their
dreams come true." |

| Ronan Keating is
signed up with Polydor, so here's a bit of history
on this famous record company.
Polydor began as a record
division of German-based Deutsche Grammaphon
Gesellschaft. The latter had been
established by Emile Berliner in 1898. In
1956, Polydor extended its operations to the
UK. The early 1960's saw releases like 'Beat
Boys' from The Beatles. Other record labels
joined Polydor and included the Track label which
had signed up big name artists like Jimi Hendrix
and The Who. The Bee Gees got signed up with
Polydor after the founder of the Creation label,
Robert Stigwood got the group over. Stigwood
had been very much associated with Polydor.
Polydor were able to distribute records on the RSO
label from Stigwood and these included the huge
musical releases that were 'Grease' and 'Saturday
Night Fever'. Through its A&R label,
Polydor signed up other big name artists like The
New Seekers and Slade. Through its MGM
label, Polydor signed up the highly popular
Osmonds. In the 1970s there was the merge of
Polydor with Philips to form Polygram. A
whole host of other great music artists have
signed up with Polydor. Through the 80's
artists like Roxy Music and Level 42 came
along. Cathy Dennis, The Moody Blues and
Wonder Stuff were other big names and of course,
of recent times, Boyzone, Stephen Gately and Ronan
Keating. |
