Kerrang! 860 - 24 Hours: A Day In The Life Of Casey Chaos The
ailing front Amen frontman is currently adjusting to ‘normality’, following
grueling touring schedules. For casey, this means rediscovering his house in
Sherman Oaks, California, visiting his doctors, pissing on floors and listening
to twilight gunfire…
“Recognized in my neighbourhood? Fuck, no. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s
here. Mariah Carey. All the giant blockbuster players. People don’t care about
me. Well, yeah, occasionally someone’ll come up and say, ‘I love your
album’. I don’t need a bodyguard! Families live here, although you do hear
gunshots at night…
“Right now, I’m
adapting to the total lunatic lifestyle of being on the road for 18 months to
coming home and going into a studio to make new music to put out there again.
When I’m at home, I usually get up around noon. I’ll put some music on. I
don’t eat breakfast, but I do take pills. Ha ha! That’s the breakfast of
champions! I sometimes go to the gym around the corner. I wake up and go –
literally in the clothes I slept in. then I’ll go back home, shower, and take
care of calls. I just can’t get off the fucking phone. That’s probably why
it takes so long to get out of the house!
“I don’t have any
pets. I can’t take care if myself – how am I supposed to look after a
fucking animal?
“At two, I might go
to the doctors to check the levels of medication in my blood. If there’s too
much of a certain medication, my blood becomes, like, toxic. That’s why I get
In so much trouble on the road, because there’s no-one there for six months to
regulate my prescriptions. Sometimes I’ll be in actual physical pain, and
sometimes, because of my lungs, it’s just like breathlessness. I have an
undiagnosed lung disorder, which is to say, when you don’t fit a category and
you don’t have the symptoms everybody else has, they don’t know what it is.
“I’ll have lunch
at about three. Always with a friend, like Adam from Machine Head, or Ross
(Robinson, Amen/Slipknot producer). We mostly have sushi. But it’s social.
I’m not a businessman; I don’t talk business.
“I drive home, and
usually end up in the studio writing with (Amen drummer Shannon) Larkin. I say
studio, but it’s a little shithole in my garage. That’ll take a couple of
hours until about eight. Then, I’ll have a snack and maybe go to this black
metal store called Dark Realm or another store called Bionic Records. I like to
get some good new music and support independent CD stores.
“What I’ll do
then can vary. I definitely don’t wanna go out every night; I’m trying to be
with myself at this point. But when I go out, I’ll go over the hill to
Hollywood to a bar or party with friends. I sometimes go to places just to fuel
my anger. I went to this place called the Sky Bar once by accident, where some
guy had a exhibition of Kate Moss photos. Full of old movie stars going, ‘Ooh
that’s beautiful’. But it was shit, man! A kid could have done better with a
disposable camera! I just pulled my cock out and pissed in the middle of the
place.
“I’m big on
cinema. I love films, but I go for more arthouse than what’s on general
release. Y’know, like Harmony Korine films. He directed stuff like ‘Gummo’
and ‘Julien Donkey-Boy’. ‘Gummo’ is the kind of film I can just sit back
and watch again and again. To be honest, though, I’d probably watch it after
coming home from a night out. So we’re talking maybe four in the morning.
I’ll go to bed about six. But as for a good night’s rest, I wrote a song
about it; ‘I Don’t Sleep’.” Sound
