Look after your keel
–
Keel maintenance is particularly important and if your boat has not had the keel-housing modified, we recommend that this is done.
New members receive a free copy of our Manual, which contains instructions, but if you are at all doubtful, consult first.
Other improvements are possible if you have time and the money to do them. Before you rush to the chandlers, study the Sailfish Manual and decide which, if any, alterations or repairs you wish to do. Some are more urgent than others. What to tackle yourself and what to pass over to a professional may need some discussion.
SPARE PARTS AND EXTRAS: Items not available locally? - The Spares Secretary may be able to help.
You may choose to fit your boat out as a luxury yacht or
prefer to keep a bare boat to gain racing advantage.
The Modifications Manual gives detailed drawings of the keel raising and lowering mechanism – includes ideas for fitments and methods of raising the mast.
The photograph below shows the ‘A frame’ in use.

SPECIAL ENQUIRY ABOUT SAILFISH DESIGN SOMEONE BUYING A NEW BOAT : Is there any guarantee of reliability? ”I find it incredible that as the boat has given over thirty years of good service this is not guarantee enough of its seaworthiness. Regrettably there are no original technical drawings of the boat available.” DESIGN TESTED BEFORE MANUFACTURE And SINCE EEC ESTABLISHED NEW RULES - “My suggestion is to submit your boat for assessment under
Module Aa of the RCD Regs. Using ISO
CD 12217: Stability and Buoyancy Methods of Assessment and Categorisation
part 3: Boats up to and including 6m in length. This can be arranged through
the RYA and will involve a knockdown and recovery test.” Phil
