Haworth
the home of the Brontė sisters now has its own 'cam - the closest to Saltaire

Apart from the interest of seeing what Mt Fuji, Nantucket Habour,an ISP's reception area or a deserted waterhole in the South African bush looked like a few minutes ago webcams are useful for

checking weather conditions before making a journey.

The weather in the UK tends to come of the Atlantic so in order to test weather forecasts it is best to look to the South-West.

About 35 miles in that direction is

Manchester

There are several webcams here of which the most interesting is the BBC's showing

looking towards St Peter's Square, the Library (the best public reference library in the North of England) and the back of the Town Hall. In the distance can be seen the West Pennine Moors the most prominent peak - to the right of the Town Hall tower - being Winter Hill above Bolton.
Towards the left-hand top of the picture are the low hills which lie between the city and the Lancashire costal plain. In the centre, stretching away to the north, is the valley of the River Douglas the route to Preston beyond which lies the flat plain of the Fylde.
(QUERY: should we be able to see Blackpool Tower in exceptional conditions?)

Pointing in the other direction is a 'cam showing the sky to the south west

GMPTE has now placed a 'cam near Piccadilly gardens.

Bolton itself has webcam showing a distant view of the Town Hall and another, and closer, view of the West Pennine Moors

A few miles east of Manchester is Ashton under Lyne

To the South and East of Manchester is

The Peak District
Near Buxton is a camera which also has a definite purpose to allow inspection of
the moors around a University research station.
It succeeds in giving a feel of the high moorland
Java is needed to view it.
Leek has a rather conventional 'cam showing a row of shops and the passing traffic.

Fifty miles or so to the North of Saltaire is

Middlesborough
The BBC's 'cam shows the unique (in the UK) Transporter Bridge across the River Tees but not much else.
In the distance is one of the petrochemical works of Billingham - there are many in the area. I am told that the sky really is that colour.

A digicam site updated two or three times a month is Don Burluraux's
North York Moors Cam.

Next door on Teeside but overlapping is
ClevelandCam

One hundred miles north is one of the great cities of the UK
Newcastle upon Tyne
The BBC's 'cam is situated in the rival town of Gateshead but looks across the river and shows the Tyne Bridge with glimpses of the High-level and Swing Bridges
The camera is moved at some times of the day to show a wider view.

About 100 miles to the NW of Saltaire is
The Lake District
There are now two webcams in the Lake District The first from George Fisher's shop in Keswick has one of the best views. Being the Lake District what you see depends on the weather. You may only see low clouds raindrops on the lens and, near the bottom, the roofs of Keswick with the tower of the market hall prominent.
But when the clouds lift you see the full 1000m/3000' bulk of

Skiddaw

If the clouds are low then there is a picture of the view you should be seeing on the 'weather' page of George Fisher's website

Map

The second 'cam shows the main street of Coniston
In the background is the graveyard where John Ruskin
was buried (and recently Donald Campbell).

Also in the the area is Ann Bowker's Mad about Mountainssite. When the author is at home which isn't always the case - she goes off to the Faroes or, or the Sinai or Switzerland or wherever to walk up mountains, there are pictures of the Lake District posted each evening

From Ann Bowker's Mad about Mountains site
The view from the Ark
Stickle Tarn, Mill Gill, Great Langdale,
Windermere and in the distance from right to left the Howgill Fells, the Craven Fells ( the prominent highland above Windermere)
Faleton Fell and, hazily above Esthwaite Lake, the Forest of Bowland, and, in the top right-hand corner, a glimpse
of the Kent Estuary all as seen from Pavey Ark ( one of the Langdale Pikes)
by Ann Bowker's Mad about Mountains site

On a clear day you should be able to see from here Boulsworth Hill above Colne less than 15 miles from Saltaire.

A similar site from the Coniston area is Tony Richard's world famous Lakeland Cam
This is updated every afternoon.

A conventional webcam for this area is provided by the BBC at Carlisle

There is even a webcam on
the Isle of Man which, of course, isn't in Northern England but you might get some weather tips from it. The 'cam show
a street in Douglas

On the other side of the Irish Sea this 'cam shows
the River Lagan in Belfast.

While only a little way north of Carlisle (see previous panel) is
Gretna Green in Scotland.

Lincolnshire isn't in the North either but then it's not in East Anglia or the Midlands
The BBC's Lincoln 'cam shows the 14thC towers of the cathedral.

Map

(It is said that you can see Lincoln cathedral from Otley Chevin only a few miles NE of Saltaire. While this is more likely than the other 'local superstition' that you can see Helvellyn from Harrogate it would need to be a very clear day in which to set up your telescope.)
