Over the past few years Saltaire has developed into a centre for bookselling in Yorkshire; with three shops devoted mainly or partly to second-hand, out-of-print and antiquarian books and three other dealers in the Victoria Centre Saltaire now has as many such outlets than Leeds recently dubbed a ' future world city'
The longest established seller was Clive Woods who established Falcon Books in 1981. Clive is well known around the village as leading figure in the Village Society and the Traders' Association in fact he is widely regarded as the face of Saltaire

In the early summer of 2001 Clive suffered a mild stroke and has decided to close Falcon Books which has now ceased trading.

However we will leave the logo in place to recall 20 years during which Saltaire became a centre for book buying in West Yorkshire.
Clive is making a good recovery and is often to be seen about the village.

Mandy Farrar and Mark Killingwray came to Saltaire in 1991. Their approach to bookselling is diffrent from Clive's. As the name of the shop implies there is a strong interest in Irish music. Mandy used to present an Irish music programme on the the local community radio station and under the name Bodhrán Productions presents top music acts at the Victoria Hall.
The next production is Cherish the Ladies on Tuesday 22nd June1999( details from the Bodhrán)
So the shop specialises in irsih music selling CDs, and some musical instruments as well as of and about the subject. There are also shelves of review books making this an excellent source of cheap new books. There is also a variety of craft products for sale.
At the back of the shop there is a corridor leading to the staircase to the cellar.and the Bodhrán's reasonably priced stock of second-hand books. But they have more than they can supply so it is always worth asking or...

The Victoria Centre is an antiques centre set in two beautifully restored shops in Victoria Rd. Among the dealers operating from it are three selling books.
The first - operating since 1996 - is Derek Bryant Books. His stock, displayed in the special browsing room on the ground floor is mainly general but includes many books of a Yorkshire interest. He is an Associate member of the Provincial Booksellers' Fairs Association.

There are also two more outlets in the village. Helen Kemp carries a small stock of new and sometimes second-hand books of New Age interest in her shop at the corner of Victoria Rd and Caroline St.
This building has a respected place in the history of Saltaire bookselling having been the shop of Abraham Holroyd

and then there is
the bookshop in the 1853 Gallery.
This sells new books. It is especially strong in Art including a huge selection of fine art postcards, but also carries fiction, poetry, women, gay studies, childrens books and Penguin Classics.
As might be expected it specialises in books on
David Hockney including imported items which are not easy to obtain elsewhere. There are also exclusive items such as tee-shirts with Hockney designs.
The bookshop is a surprising place as writer Jim Greenhalf describes it in Salt and Silver a story of hope:
The books "are laid out flat on an assortment of 40-odd surfaces, including spacious window recesses and a large butcher's block which took (the late Jonathan)Silver's fancy in 1994. The advantage of this novel method of display is that the browser does not get a chronic Hunchback of Notre Dame crick in the neck from trying to read the spines.....Words, music, pictures, carpets, glass cases, cabinets, flowers, magnificent vases and the odd bit of junk tumble into each other. .....The interior reminds me of a Chagall painting, where objects defy the rules of physics, obeying only the imagination." If you think that art galleries sometimes sell a few books then come to Saltaire and let your concepts expand.
