The
Salvia Divinorum plant is used as a sacred medicine by shamanic healers
living in the mountainous Sierra Madre Oriental (Mexico). The Mazatect
regard the plant as holy and take special care not to damage or destroy
the plant. Interest in this plant has grown due to its unique entheogen
properties. Divinorum
is one of several vision-inducing plants employed by the Mazatec Indians,
one of the native Peoples living in the mountains and upland valleys
of northeastern Oaxaca ( LEANDER J. VALDES III, JOSE LUIS DIAZ and
ARA G. PAUL 1982).

Its
regarded as a very rare plant, found naturally only in this
region. The
plant grows in large clones to well over 1 m in height and
its large green leaves, hollow square stems and white flowers
with purple calyces.
