School and health kits for the children of the Nordeste region of Brazil

Beneficiaries: The children of Brazil and their educational programs.

Project Description

(a) Objectives: To provide the basic supplies for school or basic items for good health and hygiene. We will also provide a disposable camera in each kit that will allow the children to photograph their culture in any way they desire. The camera will be collected and turned into an exhibit for the other schools that participated in the project.

(b) Scope and coverage: The team hopes to reach as many as we can in a chosen region. That region will be determined based on the contacts we make in Brazil and their thoughts or suggestion on the project. We would like to reach out to the most in need. We will distribute the kits to each child/student when we arrive or immediately after the completion of the race. The team will try to focus on one school or one villaqe that will gain the most from this project.

Project Background

The race will take place in the Northeast region of Brazil. The wild lands of Nordeste will host the spirit of the race. The official language is Portuguese. The Nordeste is the third largest region in Brazil and the most enigmatic. The Nordeste can be described in terms of austerity, aridity, thirst and drought. The Nordestino is sober, serious and passionately attached to this barren land which nourishes him so poorly. The Nordeste prefers the essential to the superfluous, labour to idleness. Education is a problem. Schools are few and far between. Often children can not attend school due do the lack of basic supplies and needs. These are simple and ordinary items that are very rare and expensive in this area. There have been great efforts in helping the Nordeste but more can be done and accomolished.

Expected Outcome

We hope our project will allow the children to focus on education and not be forced to work in order to provide for basic needs. We hope that this exchange project will break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy at least for a few children in Brazil. We do not want them to appear on the doorstep of the school only to be turned away because they did not have the supplIes .We will concentrate on a small village that needs this type of assistance. The outcome can onlv be positive.

After coordinating with contacts in Brazil we will proceed with the distribution of the kits. That could be either through the school or a list of children in need of the kits. We will be in the village to make sure that all is handled in a positive manner. The village or school will be determined from our research and after discussing the project with our contact in Brazil.

Project cost

No Team member will receive a salary .A financial report will be prepared and presented to all Sponsors.

Distribution and Monitoring

The project will begin as soon as we have decided where the kits will go. The kits will be distributed by member of team AAA upon arrival in Brazil or upon completion of the race. There will be a form supplied to the school for suggestion on how to make the proiect more effective and productive in the future.
