the nation of Queensland, where women Landowners protect their townspeople
and magicians have long since lost their power, no one has known strife
for a thousand years. Now,
great matters have called away Wedna, Principal Landowner of Barnady, from
the stewardship of her town.
But
all is not well in Barnady. The
Mayor, set to guard the town in Wedna's absence, has begun to make
changes. Why has he chosen now, of all times, to crack down on the Inn
of the Spotted Crow? And why
is he intimidating the poor magicians of the Guild, who have never been a
threat to anyone? Lila Galathan, Pastor of the Queen's Church, is the only
person strong enough to check the Mayor's power. But thus far, she has restrained
herself.
Two
boys of the Magicians' Guild, faced with the threat to their home and
livelihood, strive in secret to uncover the reasons for the Mayor's
relentless actions. In the
process, they discover a conspiracy that runs far deeper than they had
imagined, a plot so perilous that it threatens to unbalance the very way
