SANDWELL GROUP –
RAMBLERS’ ASSOCIATION
INTRODUCTION & GENERAL INFORMATION
The Sandwell Group of the Ramblers’
Association was formed by a small steering group in the winter of 1991 and was
officially launched at an inauguration meeting at the Sandwell Council House in
March 1992. (It is a member of the national Ramblers’ Association www.ramblers.org.uk and the Staffordshire Area Ramblers’ Association http://homepages.tesco.net/~staffsra
From those humble beginnings a few years
ago, it has grown rapidly to over 200 members.
The Group runs an extensive walks programme
with events taking place on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesday throughout the year
and on Friday evenings in the summer months. In addition, several walking
weekends are arranged each year at various attractive venues throughout the
country.
The walks vary in length from 4 miles to 16 miles and also in degrees of difficulty. The age range of active walkers is from 10 to 80. There is also a Long Distance Challenge Walks section for those interested in more strenuous walking. Walks Programme
Social meetings are held at a central
location in
In addition to providing leisure walking and
social events, the Group has an important role to play in protecting public
rights of way. The Footpath Secretary maintains a close liaison with Sandwell
Council to ensure that footpaths are kept open and unobstructed.
The Group is playing an active part with the
Council in forming a strategy for "Walking in Sandwell" and in the
preparation of the Borough’s Rights of Way Improvement Plan. Prominent among
the aims of the group are the provision of a number of cross Borough walking
routes, which would encourage walking as a health and leisure activity within
the Borough of Sandwell
Group representatives are also members of
Sandwell Local Access Forum, Sandwell Valley Trails Group, Walking in Sandwell
Forum, Cycling in Sandwell Group and Sandwell Stride Health Walks Group
Anyone interested in trying a walk with the
