BACK 2 BASICS STANCES
Regular is left foot leading Goofy is right foot leading Switch is the stance that you are not normally in Fakie is rolling backwards in your normal stance (when coming down from the top of a ramp, or doing a 180 over a ramp) BASIC TRICKS Ollie Put your back foot on your tail and your leading foot around the middle of the board. Kick back on the tail and slide your leading foot towards the nose (TIP-crouching before doing your ollie will gain you more height). Nollie This is really a nose ollie. Put your leading foot on the nose and your back foot in the middle. Kick down on the nose and slide your back foot towards the tail. Some people just can’t do it so don’t despair, just keep trying. Pumping Not really a trick, more a useful technique for vert skaters. When you approach the start of the slope on the quarter or halfpipe crouch down. Once you have gone as far as you can go stand up, and when you feel that you’re coming back down, crouch again. This should allow you to keep a constant speed if you keep doing it. Drop in A must learn trick for all skaters who ever go near a skatepark. Put the tail of your board on the lip of the quarter/halfpipe and put your back foot on it. Build up your confidence and put your front foot over where your front trucks appear to be. Most people fall off when they start because they don't have the confidence to place their front foot down...they think that they will go flying. Just keep thinking that it is really easy. 180 kickturn Not really a trick, just something that every skater must learn. Whilst rolling along, lift the nose of your board so that your front trucks are off the ground. Spin round 180 degrees on your back trucks. Doing a 360 or above is doing a trick, so once you have mastered this then try them. Acid drop This trick should be done over a set of stairs, and is one of those tricks that seems so easy yet impresses so many competition judges when done properly. Holding the board in one hand (you are not on it at this point) run towards the stair set. Jump into the air and slip the board under your feet before you land on the ground. 180 ollie Do the ollie action, but as you kick the tail down spin your body. If you have done the ollie correctly then the board should stay with your feet. Halfcab A fakie 180 ollie. |

GRINDS & KICK TRICKS Pop shuvit
This is one of the easiest tricks to learn, and Nathan and Michael completed it within a week. Get into ollie position and do the ollie action, but kick your tail round so that the board spins 180 degrees. Once it has done that then put your feet back on the board. If you kick hard enough you should be able to pull off a 360 shuvit. Boneless Like the acid drop, it is easy and impressive. Whilst riding along place your back foot in the middle of the board. Place one hand on the board as if your were doing an indy. Then take your leading foot off and place it on the ground. Push off the ground with your leading foot and whilst in the air place it back on. You have to be able to do this action quickly otherwise you will just stop. Kickflip Get into the ollie position, but have only the toes of your leading foot on the middle of the board. Do the ollie action, but as your leading foot reaches the nose kick down so as to make the board spin round. When you see the grip tape place your feet on the board and ride away. Some people get this within a week, but it takes some people ages before they can do it. Heelflip Like a kickflip, but do the action on the opposite side of the board with your heel. 360 flip It’s hard to describe this trick accurately enough for someone to be able to do it. It’s like a 360 shuvit and a kickflip at exactly the same time. Watch the video closely when we put it on the site. Varial (Kastalarail) There are two types of varials, and one is about ten times easier than the other. The first just involves you jumping 180 without your board as you go along (known as an old school varial). The second is more difficult. Ride along and do a pop shuvit, but you spin 180 in the opposite direction from your board. Sex change A sex change is a normal varial (not old school) with a kickflip or heelflip. Hardflip Just mix in your pop shuvit with your kickflip and bob's your uncle! Chicago flip Do a kickflip, but as you are in the air spin 360 without your board. Cambie flip Mick invented this (and has landed it a couple of times), so he wants to share it with the world! Go for an impossible, but once its half way round (ie grip facing ground) flip it over like you are finishing a kickflip...it looks very cool, but it's also extremely hard. SPECIAL CHALLENGE-Impossible This trick is best done off of a huge box or something that gives you a lot of height. Do the Hardflip action, but kick really hard so that the board can spin round fully vertical. This trick will take ages to do, so never give up just because you can’t do after the first few weeks. Boardslide Ollie towards the rail, but spin 90 degrees so that you can grind on your deck. Most people that we know find BS boardslide easier (this means having your back facing the way that you are going), but you may disagree. Try it both ways, and moreover do it both ways. 50-50 grind Ollie onto the rail normally and grind on your two trucks. 5-0 grind & nosegrind For a 5-0 do the 50-50 action, but grind only on your back truck. A nose grind is similar, but is a grind only on your front truck. Crooked grind & overcrook A crooked grind is essentially a 5-0. Grind in a 5-0, but swing your front truck out towards the side so that your grind looks crooked. Remember that for a crooked the front of the board always has to be in the air. An overcrook is a crooked grind on the nose. Tailslide & noseslide Come towards the rail from the side and run parallel with it. Stay as far away as not to start a boardslide, but not as far away as to not reach the rail. Ollie 90 degrees and slide along on either your tail or your nose (which many find the easier option). Smith grind & feeble grind For a smith, get ready to do a crooked. Ollie onto the rail, but as you grind have the front of your board hanging off the rail (below where you are grinding may be a better way to put it). A feeble is a smith on the nose. Try a fakie smith to get used to feebles. Casper This could be classed as a manual because it can be done on flat ground. Wax your tail off and skate along very smooth ground. Do half a kickflip but always keep your kicking foot on the board. Pop your back foot on the underside of the tail of your board and lift the front up. You should slide along a bit, and once you slow down just finish your kickflip. It is actually quite easy. SPECIAL CHALLENGE-Darkslide This is undoubtedly one of the hardest grinds ever invented. Instead of just doing a 90 degree ollie onto the rail (as for a boardslide), do half a kickflip as well. This should cause you to slide along on your grip tape. To come off, finish your kickflip at the other end of the rail. Make sure that the rail is well waxed because otherwise you will fall and hurt yourself. |

LIP TRICKS & GRABS Rock’n’Roll
Approach the quarter/halfpipe lip at a fair speed. Just roll up. The board should catch onto the lip and stop you there for a moment. After a couple of seconds you should just come down without any effort. Overstep This is a trick that Stephen made up, and can only be done on spines. Approach the spine and go for a rock’n’roll, but you should be coming in faster than usual. When you reach the top your board should become parallel with the ground, not the ramp (this means that none of your wheels will be touching the ramp). Swing over the spine as if you were going to go over, but pull back quickly before you go over and come down. Disaster This is when you do a trick and land on the lip in a rock’n’roll. What we normally do is either an old school varial or a fakie ollie onto the lip. It is also permitted that you can go into a normal rock’n’roll, but do an old school varial whilst on the lip. Axle stall Come up the ramp and start a manual as you reach the lip. Start turning as well, until both trucks are on the lip and you are not moving. To come off, raise the front of your board and spin round. SPECIAL CHALLENGE-Handplant Despite all his criticisms from other people who don’t believe his achievements, Michael is the only member of Skate Cambie who has completed the handplant successfully. He did it, of course, by accident…see the success stories page for more details. To handplant, approach the ramp and crouch. Grab your board as if you were to do an indy and wait till you have just about reached the lip. Take your free arm and grab the lip and pull your board up into the air with your other hand. Hold this for as long as you can, and when your arm starts to feel as if it’s slipping away come back down. It is best to do this over a spine for two reasons, the first being that it is easier to hold onto the lip of a spine and the second being that if you go over the opposite way then you still have a good chance of landing. Nosegrab Pretty self-explanatory really. Just ollie and crouch in the air, and whilst crouching grab the nose of your board. Remember that even a tap at the nose counts. Tailgrab This is much harder, but can be done easily on a skater’s good day. It’s best to nollie into this trick so that you can grab the tail easily. But if you have enough air then just crouch back and grab your tail. Indy When in the air grab the side of the board in front (have your hand in between your two legs) of you. Indy nosebone Tweaked indy: tilt your body to do this, it just looks better, that's all. Roastbeef Go for an indy, but take your arm right through your legs and grab behind you like a method. Method This is an indy, but you are grabbing behind you. Mute Grab the side of your board like an indy, but not between your legs, further to the nose. Melon The reverse of a mute, the part of the nose (or indeed tail) thats behind you. Rocket air A two-handed nosegrab. Japan air This is really just a fancy nosegrab. You've really got to do a massive tweak for this one, yank yourself away back...its hard, but it looks so amazing! Stalefish A tailgrab with the same idea as a Japan air. Crossbone Like a Japan air, but grab your front truck. Make sure that you take your hand away in time, otherwise you will be in great amounts of pain. Airwalk Start a nosegrab, but pull both of your feet off the board as if you were walking on the air. Put your feet back on before you get close the lip/ground otherwise you will be penalised for bailing. Fingerflip Grab the nose of your board and spin the board around your fingers like a kickflip. Harder than an airwalk, but easier than the Christ air. Christ air Grab the board before you ollie. Once you have done your ollie and are in the air, stretch out as if you were being crucified. Benihana This is when you start to think to yourself (despairingly) ‘Why did I ever try to skate vert?’. This kind of trick makes jumping out of a plane (which is in the air) without a parachute look safe. Anyway, nothing there that should put you off. When in the air grab any part of the board that you like and take one leg off. Slide this leg under the board and quickly take it away. None of us have ever seen anyone doing this (even in videos!) so wait until you are just about good enough to go pro before you start anything like this. Madonna Another one of those horrible grabs that puts you off ever skating again. It’s really like the benihana, and perhaps not as hard. Grab your nose and kind of lie on the board. Take your back foot off and have it “dragging” behind the board. |
