We will welcome all Soroptimist visitors to our meetings and we will be delighted to hear from any woman who lives locally and might be interested in joining us.

We have two meetings a month; at one we conduct Soroptimist business, and at the other we have speakers and /or social events .

We also have committee meetings to organise the various affairs of the club, and we attend various meetings, dinners etc. with members of other clubs, so forming a network of friends around the West Midlands.

We elect our club officers in March, and the President chooses her Charities for which the club then organises fund-raising events throughout the year. In '99-2000 we are raising money :-

a) to buy nebulisers for ambulance use. (these provide lifesaving relief for asthmatic sufferers)

b) for use by a hostel for battered women to buy toys for children ;

c) to support the SI Club Calcutta in developing hygiene, health education and schooling in three rural villages.

These children in the photograph below are typical of those that are helped within the schools established by these projects. Literacy for all, and in particular the girl child, is an important key stone in developing the world's potential.

 

We will, also, be supporting the International SI 4 -year charity- which aims to raise money to purchase limbs for victims of land -mines and we will be supporting the charity of the Midland Arden Soroptimist Regional President.

Where there are issues that affect women, for instance the issues of child prostitution and of land -mines, Soroptimists are active in campaigning for recognition of the help that is needed . Local issues are not neglected and we raise these with the relevant authorities, with MPs and so on.

International friendship is an important part of Soroptimism and our club has links with clubs in

Bratislavia ,

Calcutta,

Cwmbran,

 Frankfurt,

 Lyon

 

West Betuwe

and Eastern Adelaide

We correspond with these clubs, and try to have exchange visits when we can link with the aims and objectives of each other's clubs, as well as establishing an international network of friends.

As well as these small scale visits there are conferences on both a local and international scale where Soroptimists meet . This year ['99], for instance, the major International Federation conference is in Finland and the British Federation meets in Dublin.

S.I.. West Birmingham usually meets at The Edgebaston Palace Hotel (w.w.w. Edgebastonpalace.co.uk.) on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.
