TitoPuente's
orchestra is distinguished by a velvet-smooth
blending of
syncopated sounds, like an exotic whipped cream
spiced with
a Caribbean rum. His arrangements convey an
authentic Latin-American
flavor, yet he uses some of the
techniques of
progressive jazz to give his music a mellifluous,
shimmering character.
No wild, raucous sensationalism here
instead, music
irresistibly made for dancing.

This is an album
of Latin Percussion and Terrific Sounds!
As Tito Puente
points out:"This album contains the efforts
of some of the
greatest percussionists that are in this country.
I have recorded
two album sides, with all different types of
percussion played
for two distinct kinds of music. One side
is various patterns
of 6/8 rhythm, and the work of the singers
and percussionists
is just tremendous. The other side features
some advanced
popular Latin rhythms in which I spotlight
mostly timbales
in different forms of rhythmic figurations. On
my solo
tracksI play three sets of timbales with just a cowbell
accompaniment.
Once in a lifetime one gets the opportunity to
turn a really
exciting idea into an album. "I was fortunate in
being
able to get these great percussionists together to make an
album of this
nature."

The imcomparable
Tito Puente, whose highly danceable latin
stylings have
won him a tremendous American following, is a
man who doesn't
rest on his laurels. Proof of this can be heard
in Tambo, an
exciting display of tropical melody which echoes
the primitive
pulsations of the jungle. Followers will find that
Tito has given
latin dance music a new dimension as he presents
a thrilling
array of savage and passionate rhythms. Drums and
bongos provide
the basic infectious beat throughout most of the
record. If your
taste runs towards the torrid and tropical, then
"Tambo", by
Tito Puente, should suit you to a T.
