It's small wonder
that Hawaii's biggest moonlight attraction for the past
several
years has been a talented group of four musicians producing the
"Exciting and
Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny".
This is Denny's
third album.
Exotica Vol
1 and Exotica Vol 2 launched a new style of Hawaiian music.
That style stresses
sound - exciting sound - exotic sound -
- pumping an
intoxicating throb into the romantic rhythms of Polynesia.

The selections
in this new record cover a wide range.
From Africa
to Burma, from Peru to Trinidad or Hawaii.
The rhythms
and sound effects are produced by a host of
instruments
as unique as the lands from which they come.
Buddhist prayer
bells from Japan.
A two-hundred
pound carved rhythm log from the jungles of New Guinea.
Weird-sounding
gongs, chime effects, percussion instruments from India,
Africa, Japan
and Hawaii and the beautiful harp effect of a Japanese Koto.
Denny
has obtained many of his unusual sounds simply by using
children's
toy bells bought in a "Five and Dime" store.

In Waikiki, where
I live whenever I get the chance, a bistro known as
the "Daggar
Bar" and its accompanying Bora Bora Lounge has for
some time been
the mecca of people who enjoy a new type of music.
I'm one of the
gang that gathers there to hear the fresh,
clean tropical
sounds of Martin Denny and his group.
Why do we all
go for Denny's type of music?
It's professional,
and very expertly put together for the public.
It's new, for
it uses instruments and rythms not usually found in modern popular music.
It's witty,
and much to the taste of people who like a little humor for the long haul.

Having explored
so successfuly the exotic reaches of the Pacific
in his previous
musical excursions, the Martin Denny Sound
now turns to
that richest storehouse on earth, "Africa", for its
latest inspiration.
Translating the various native idioms, into
breathtaking
ear-appealing vignettes, once again Mr Denny
simulates the
jaded palate of everyday civilisation with music
that is pure
escape. We see and feel the searing veldt........the
moody reaches
of the jungle, a tribal initiation fete and sheer
encompassing
beauty.
