JAMES HARVEY
Born: February 16, 1822 (Torbryan parish records, estimated
from the St. Mary the Virgin burial records). Death record of James' first wife and estimated birth date from
Mildred Howard collection, vol.3 James may have had children by Jane, but
they were not recorded at St. Mary the Virgin, as were his later children.
According to Pearl Benson, James Harvey was a stone-mason, and helped
his brother Richard build the church of St. Mary the Virgin. He and Richard
presumably emmigrated from Devon together. According to Pearl, he never
had any children by his first wife, Jane. I assume the "James & Charlotte
Harvey" whose children are registered at St. Mary's are James Harvey and
Charlotte Lennox, as Pearl informed me this was the name of his second
wife.
That the James who died in 1888 is the RIGHT James is based on the age
(65) at time of death - which corresponds closely with the Torbryan
baptism records. The death record says James lived on Hamilton Street.
Married: Jane Dambrill Withycombe, Sept.14, 1848 (Anglican
Cathedral marriage register), Charlotte Lennox in 1874 (estimated from
children's birthdates, from St. Mary the Virgin church baptism
records).
Died :December 18, 1888, 65 years old (St. Mary the Virgin church
burial records).
