BARBARA BERTHA SQUIRES (HARVEY)
Born: About 1869 (estimated from St. Mary the Virgin church marriage
register and headstone). Barbara's name is given as "Bertha" on the baptism records of Vick,
James and Jean, and as "Barbara Bertha" on the baptism records of Jen &
Robert. Her children knew her as "Barbara", and this is the name used on
the marriage record. On the marriage record, Barbara's father is listed as
Joseph, a fisherman from Broadcove (now St.Phillips).
According to Doug Squires, Barbara married into one of two families of
Harvey's living side by side in Southside, St.John's, and had sisters
Elizabeth (probably the witness at Barbara's wedding), Poly, and Emma, and
possibly more besides. Barbara's grandaughter, Barbara Pete (daughter of
Jen) suggested that Barbara may
have had 7 sisters! According to Pearl
Benson, Barbara had a sister Mary Jane who married Richard's brother
John (Francis John) Harvey,
although John's marriage record lists his wife as Georgina, as does their children's
birth records.
Married: October 10, 1889 (age 21), by Rev. Edward Botwood, with
