TORBRYAN (DEVON, UK) CENSUS RECORDS - 1851

The following is transcribed from a photocopy of the 1851 Torbryan census, kindly sent to me by Mr. Arthur French in November 1998. I have made a scanned version of that photocopy available, which contains additional entries. This is a 1121 K image, and may take time to download. Please note that the comment at the bottom of the image incorrectly identifies the year of the record as 1871. Note also the incorrect spelling of Torbryan ("Torbrian").

The main significance of this record is that it provides corroborating evidence of a William & Mary Harvey of Torbryan, known to be the parents of Richard Harvey, who emmigrated to Newfoundland, and provides the a parish (Woodland) and a year (1851-67 = 1784) in which to search for baptism information on William. Son Henry's age matches the birth date for the son of William & Mary mentioned in the baptism records. I have not found a baptism record for a margaret, although the date corresponds with that of an Elizabeth, born 1825.

Arthur's Note: This should make the baptisms and the parents of William and perhaps Margaret accessible, and you will quite likely find their marriage in Broadhempston. Woodland and Broadhempston are adjacent to Torbryan on the NW and SW. HO107/1851 folio 439 p4: 14. Torbrian Village. Name Rel.
