ST. MARY THE VIRGIN PARISH RECORDS

Southside (St.John's), Newfoundland, Canada

Transcribed by John Huxter

The Harvey family history has been intricately tied to the Church of St. the time it was built in 1859, by my great-great-great-grandfather, Richard E. Harvey, right up to the time it was torn down, over a hundred years later.

Photocopies of most of the parish records are held at the Provincial Archives, and it is from these photocopies that most of the data is taken. Some data from 1900 on was taken from transcriptions of vital statistics records, also held at the archives.

When transcribing these records, I searched for all Harvey records, and records of related families like Blackler. There are some entries relating to Harvey families which are NOT related to ours. Not all data from each record was transcribed (eg. all the witnesses at marriages) if I felt the family was not related, or only distantly related.

[Note: my own comments and intuitions are in brackets, like this!]

Births
Birth records are organized by family, listing the parents on the first line and children in birth order below them. The father's name is shown in full, and the mother's names as indicated in the registry, excluding the surname unless 1) the maiden name is provided, or 2) middle name(s) were provided, in which case the married surname is appended to avoid confusion. On the parents' line, the most consistent additional information gleaned from the individual baptism records of the children will be added - eg. father's occupation & residence. When individual baptism records contain information differing from that given on the parent's line, it will be noted. For example, in some instances it is clear to me that a group of children are from the same family, even though for that particular baptism, the mother has a different name - perhaps using her middle name instead.

Note that dates given are birth dates. Baptism dates are shown only for records which were of particular interest to me at the time - my apologies!
