International Brigade Memorial Trust AGM
held in Dublin - October 15th

A full report of the AGM will be added asap, including the speech by Manus O'Riordan at the Laying of a wreath by Bob Doyle on Frank Ryan's grave.
The AGM was well attended by members and supproters of the IBMT, including 4 veterans of the SCW - Bob Doyle and Mick O'Riordan from Ireland, Jack Jones and Edwards from Britain. 7 members of the IBCC attended and had a number of very positive discussions with officers and members of the IBMT on our memorial plans.
Away from the AGM proceedings the 4 veterans, relatives and IBMT officials met with the Irish President and here are her remarks.
After the AGM there was a brief Irish Times report, followed by the usual bad tempered tantrum by Kevin Meyers. Jack Jones replied to this in the IT on Wednesday 9th Nov. The Irish Times cut Jack Jones letter but you can read these 3 complete pieces here and see a photo of the delegation.
Some more photographs from that weekend of meetings, etc. will be added asap.

One part of the NI campaign to commemorate Irish volunteers is a group based in Derry who operate the following site. Visit it. www.nopasaran.netfirms.com

The Last Brigader
A daughter's touching tribute for father's day

Liz Shaw (daughter of Joe Boyd, a medic in Spain) in the
Belfast Telegraph, Saturday 18 June 2005

During the Spanish Civil War Belfast milkman Joe Boyd defied orders to drive his field ambulance into no-man's-land to collect wounded from both sides. Once back home he was more committed to peace than ever, going to extraordinary lengths to make his point. Now daughter Liz Shaw, from Dundonald, pays a deeply moving Father's Day tribute to the old war hero she called dad. Read the rest here.

Memorial to Kit Conway
unveiled June 11th, near Cahir.

The Memorial Plaque to KIT CONWAY, Killed at Jarama in 1937, was unveiled

in his native village of Burncourt, Co. Tipperary at 3.30 pm on Saturday June 11. The principal landmark is Kilcoran Lodge, past Cahir on the N8, the main Dublin to Cork road, and on the right hand side just past a "Top" filling station as you proceed in the direction of Mitchelstown and Cork. Burncourt is just 3 miles further South, and you turn off to the left from the N8 at the first sign for Mitchelstown Cave, after continuing on past Kilcoran Lodge.

Manus O'Rirodan has pulled together a memorial pamphlet, read it here. I hope to be able to make available the speechs from the day asap. These include comments by Mick O'Riordan, Bob Doyle, ManusO'Riordan and Seve, a Spanish activist. About 100 people attended this ceremony and it got some coverage in the Irish Times. Well done to all concerned.

Forgotten warriors return to battle sites
Spanish Civil War fighters travel to the Ebro
for ceremony to honour the International Brigades

Peter Beaumont, foreign affairs editor, Sunday May 1, 2005, The Observer

These days the little Spanish town of Gandesa, on the River Ebro, looks much as it did in July 1938, a place of red-brick houses with tiled roofs, dominated by a square church tower boxed in by the river on one side and the Sierra Pandols on the other.
It is a quiet place now. Then, however, it was the setting for the penultimate, bloody battle of the British Battalion of the International Brigades, charged with capturing this pretty little town during the last big Republican offensive against Franco's Nationalist rebels.

One veteran is quoted as saying: 'To my mind the battle on the Ebro was not the last major battle of the Spanish Civil War, but rather the first of the Second World War.'

New name added to the IB Volunteers List

The son of Francis George Browne has contacted me identifying his father as appearing in the book, XVth International Brigade, p73, third from right on back row.
The photo is of the Irish Section, No 1 Company, Lincolns. This could well explain why the name F Browne appears in their lists but there was no record of him being American. HE is one of numerous men for whom very little paper records exist.
Born in Dublin but moved to London. where in the mid 1930s he was a member of the CPGB. He stayed in London until his death, working in the newspaper industry.

If anyone can identify the other people in the photo, or has more info on this man (or indeed any other volunteer) please get in touch. cpcrossey@hotmail.com

Rev. Robert Martin Hilliard (1904 - 1937)

By John Corcoran

This article by John has been revivised and updated in the last few weeks. The edition here is now the version authorised by the Hilliard family. Thanks to John for his work and permission to republish.

Many readers will be familiar with the words of the Christy Moore ballad “Viva la Quinca Brigada”, where tribute is paid to the memory of those who fought in defence of the democratically elected Spanish Government between 1937 and 1939. A conflict, which is popularly known as the “Spanish Civil War”.

Who was this unlikely recruit to the International Brigades? How did an ordained Church of Ireland minister from Killarney end his days fighting fascism in Spain?

John has written this marvellous piece of research bringing us a lot of new material, newly discovered letters and articles. This article gives a fuller understanding of Hilliard and his times.

Broken links in the Eugene Downing material

It has been drawn to my attention that a couple of links were broken in the collection of articles by Eugene. Please feel free to read them all.

On a similar point there appears to have been a problem with an article I'd added about Salaria Kee, an Black American medic who features here, not just because of her own bravery, but because she married an Irish volunteer. Read her story here.

These have all now been fixed, but should anyone find broken links please drop me an email and it'll be fixed asap. CC, 5th April 2005

Connolly Column now available again

A 'new expanded edition of Michael O'Riordan's classic history' is now available in paperback.

Officially launched at a well attended in Dublin's Liberty Hall Cultural Centre on March 16th, this book is a must for all who have an interest in the Spanish Civil War or the Irish labour movement generally. Edited by Manus O'Riordan, this new edition includes a 5-page foreword by Michael with 13 additional documents, nearly 50 pages. These include recent interviews with Eugene Downing and Michael by me and another researcher.
It is hoped that this site will have the texts of the addresses by Michael O'Riordan, Manus and Cathal O'Shannon, an historian who produced the RTE programme, Even the Olives are Bleeding in 1976. Here are some images from the launch.

Hardback £19.99 / ¤30. Paperback £14.99 / ¤22.5 plus 10% post and package

Note added March 22nd:

The remarks by Michael and Manus O'Riordan at the Launch, and those by Cathal O'Shannon are now available.

International Brigade Memorial Committee established

A committee has been established to erect a memorial to the 20 men from Northern Ireland who died fighting for the Spanish Republic. In addition it was agreed that we add Jim Haughey (died in WW2) and Robert Hilliard, someone frequently associated with the North and who worked here for a few years in the early 1930's.
As more concrete information emerges I will post it here. It was agreed that we would aim to erect the memorial in late Feb. 2006.

Anyone who wants to support the Committee can contact it via this site at the moment cpcrossey@hotmail.com

There's a very interesting article on one of the most talked about IB volunteers Christopher (Kit) Conway.

I've made a few amendments to the membership list of the Bandera - check it out. I should point out that as I intend to produce a booklet on this subject, late 2005/06, not ALL the information I've obtained has been added to the site.

Some great information, especially on General O'Duffy's Irish Brigade. It is hard to find much information on them other than brief and often derogatory propoganda regarding these brave souls.

Hello Ciaran, first of all thanks for all the info you are collecting.I am from the Basque Country and I am surprised about the lack of respect and knowledge of some of the "posts" I readed. Some people, spaniards in most cases, think we are still on war.The irish deserve respect in both sides, despite political belives. The "Bandera" did not commited any atrocitys or murders. Some irsih deserted the International Brigades, due to the repression saw in the "democratic" republican side, specially against catholics. Not a single one in the Brigade. To be honest it was no democracy in any sides.Expressions such "those who fougth on the fascist side do not deserve to be mentioned" or "punch (¿bunch?) of clowns" are dissgraceful. At least, all them, deserve some respect and above all, historical respect.Again,thanks.

------------
20/2/06, Thanks for your message. I will commemt on 1 point only - yes there were deserters on the IB side, but there are also recorded incidents of Bandera men deserting, at least 3 did so.

Dear Ciaran, many thanks for all of the inforfamtion you have available on your site.
I live in Tralee and whilst there are no town men listed as members of the International Brigade, Brendan Moroney mentions a comrade called Paddy Lane from Tralee. I was hoping that there may be some more information on this man.
Cheers, and again many thanks for all the information you've made available.

Noel, 23rd Feb. 05
Thanks for getting in touch and for your interest. Moroney is almost certainly referring to Mick LEHANE, from Kerry but from Kilgarvan, not Tralee. The only men I can find from there were 35 for Franco!

ciaran

I am doing some study on the period. I would suggest that if people have problems getting particular books on the period, then they should contact the national library archives as there is a lot of archive work being done there.

I'm interested in expanding my university term paper on the Irish Brigade to a possible article for publication. I've read all of the available books on the Irish Brigade and the Spanish Foriegn Legion and am looking for any new information. While I'm interested in the "Who, When, and Where", I'm more interested in the "How and the Equipment they used." (Firearms, uniforms, rations, banners, insignia, medical units, ect.) Any information you could give me would be very helpful. Arriba Irlanda! Sincerely, Michael Skaggs, 310 Greenwood Drive, Paris, Tennessee, 38242 northmanchesterhistory@hotmail.com

A Chara Ciaran,

thanks for putting the link to the Jarama website on the site...
A couple of bits of news,

1) I was recently out in Catalonia for the 65th anniversary of the Battle of the Ebro and I found it a very good experience. Eugene Downing was ably represented by his nephew Brendan Byrne.Michael O'Riordan was there and in great form, and Bob Doyle (London based but a Dub) made the front pages of the Catalan daily paper "El Diario" with a photo of him at the commemoration event at Cobera del Ebro wearing striking looking sunglasses with the words NO WAR imprinted on to the lenses.I was able to see and understand the circumstances of Bob's capture near Gandesa, this was particularly interesting for me since I was good friends with Maurice Levitas a Dublin born British based volunteer who I was very friendly with. The International Brigade Memorial Trust (IBMT) have some good photos of the commemorative events held at Corbera del Ebro.

2) If you or any other visitors of the website have any data on the Rev.Robert Hilliard of Killarney I would be grateful to recieve it since I am trying to put out a pamphlet on him for sale mainly here in Kerry, as a prelude hopefully to lobbying Killarney DC to put up some kind of commemorative plaque.I have been in touch with his distant relatives in Killarney, who approve, but have little or no documentation on him.I know that a book called "Unusual Suspects" featured him-anyone with a copy who would be prepared to photocopy and post me the chapter on Hilliard?
I also know he was a CofI rector in the North of Ireland, he is supposed to have left that somewhat "disillusioned"-anyone know the details.I have also been told he did work with the unemployed in the north of ireland -any details? Any photos of the guy?Any photos of the memorial communion silver presented to his former Church? He is according to his relative in Killarney, said to have left Ireland for London where he worked on the Times for a while-again anyone out there with more knowledge of this subject may provide me with material/info if they wish. Post to John Corcoran, 64 Lartigue Village, Listowel, Co Kerry, Ireland. email johngee59@eircom.net

All the best- I hope to have some good photos of the commemoration at Corbera-if you wish to put some on the site I can send them on to you.
Mise le meas

Translation of my last message,
I just wanted to thank all those Irishmen who gave their lives and youth for the Spanish Republic. Those who fought on the fascist side do not deserve to be mentioned.
IT IS BETTER TO DIE STANDING THAN TO LIVE KNEELING (PASIONARIA, CHE GUEVARA)
TOMORROW SPAIN WILL BE A REPUBLIC AGAIN!!!! (POPULAR )

Great site, well done. Personally I agree with Joe Monks Jnr, but I guess some things can't be helped! I sing songs from the Spanish Revolution as I prefer to call it, in English and Spanish. I feel a need to have the cause of the International Brigades AND the Militias kept alive. Let's face it, had they won the world would be a better place today. I pay tribute to the efforts of our internationalists. Not a lot changes, Ireland is still steeped in fear of fascism today and it will continue for many years unless we do something to change it. Let us never forget their fight against evil. Let us carry on that fight. A las barricadas companeros!!!!

While researching my grandfathers name William Broggy, i was shocked to see that he fought in this war and on Franco's side. I had no idea that my grandfater was in a war. My father William Broggy11, died in 1985, and my grandfather in 1986. I know my father grew up in Limerick and had 8 siblings. I know I have so many cousins, but do not know any of them. If you could help me find more information about my Grandfather William Broggy, i would Appreciate it. Thankyou Kerry Lacey
