History

The idea for this tournament came from the Leeds branch of the Royal Society of St.George which is dedicated to promoting England and Englishness, especially fair play, good manners, honesty and chivalry. The Bowmen of Adel were asked to organize the tournament as part of a day of events to celebrate St.George’s Day. The Royal Armouries (based in Leeds) have provided a trophy in the form of a “golden” arrow. All longbow archers from all parts of the United Kingdom and abroad are welcome to take part. The Royal Armouries Arrow is on display in the Tournament Hall of the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Entrance is free

Custodians of the arrow

The Royal Armouries, mindful of the value of the trophy which they have provided for the contest, has entrusted the arrow to the Bowmen of Adel in West Yorkshire. The following gentlemen have signified their desire to organize the contest in 2006 to determine who should hold the arrow for a year or such time as the next contest be held, which ever be the soonest.

David O’Carroll, being presently the President of the Bowmen of Adel.

Lou Radcliffe, being presently a member of the Bowmen of Adel and the Royal Society of St.George.

The custodians are grateful for the expert advice of the following:

Cedric Abbott, being presently a member of the Bowmen of Adel.

Geoffrey Gaunt, being presently a member of the Bowmen of Adel and a person well acquainted with the history of archery in Yorkshire.

It is the duty of the custodians to devise a competition and to organize the contest. For 2006, it has been determined that archers of the Bowmen of Adel should organize the said competition and that it be hosted by Royal Society of St.George (Leeds) at the Morley Rugby Club’s grounds at Scatcherd Lane, Morley, in West Yorkshire on St.George's Day.

Foundation members

Being mindful of the costs of providing suitable mementoes of the first competition and other trophies as may be needed, the Custodians invited ladies and gentlemen skilled at the shooting in the long bow or with an interest in preserving the traditions of this country to subscribe a suitable amount for the purchase of such trophies as the Custodians think fit to provide. We are therefore very grateful to these archers and to the St.Georges's Archery Club , Samlesbury Longbow Archers and Selby Archers who provided trophies.

Traditions of archery

The Custodians wish to uphold the traditions of target archery as have been practised for many years in Yorkshire and particularly welcome those skilled at shooting in the longbow who adhere to fair play, good manners and chivalry.

They have therefore determined that for this competition should be shot in the traditional way- two ways – and that the rules of shooting of the British Longbow Society should be followed. The Custodians will follow the advice of the Bowmen of Adel as to safety and practicalities of this determination.

The attention of archers is drawn to the determination of the Chairman of the GNAS Target Committee as to the meaning of a traditional longbow. The competiton is for archers using a traditional longbow.
