Psalm
122
1A song of ascents.
Of David. I rejoiced with those who said to me, Let us go to the house of the
LORD.
2 Our feet are standing in your gates, O Jerusalem.
3
Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together.
4 That is where the tribes group, the tribes of the LORD, to praise
the name of the LORD according to the statute given to Israel.
5 There the thrones for judgment stand, the thrones of the house of
David.
6
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure.
7 May there be peace within your walls and security within your
citadels.
8 For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, Peace be
within you.
9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your
prosperity
John 10: 22-29
The Unbelief of the Jews
22 Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter,
23 and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon's Colonnade.
24 The Jews gathered round him, saying, How long will you keep us in
suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.
25 Jesus answered, I did tell you, but you do not believe. The
miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me,
26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no-one can
snatch them out of my hand.
29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no-one
can snatch them out of my Father's hand.
12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any
double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and
marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is
uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through
the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with
our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we
are--yet was without sin.
16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that
we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
The Rich Young Man
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his
knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal
life?
18 Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No-one is good--except
God alone.
19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery,
do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honour your father
and mother.'
20 Teacher, he declared, all these I have kept since I was a boy.
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said.
Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven. Then come, follow me.
22 At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had
great wealth.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it is for
the rich to enter the kingdom of God!
24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again,
Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than
for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.
26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, Who
then can be saved?
27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but
not with God; all things are possible with God.
28 Peter said to him, We have left everything to follow you!
29 I tell you the truth, Jesus replied, no-one who has left home or
brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the
gospel
30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age
(homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--and with them,
persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life.
31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first
9
If you make the Most High your dwelling--even the LORD, who is my refuge--
10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your
tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all
yourways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the
great lion and the serpent.
14
Because he loves me, says the LORD, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for
he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in
trouble, I will deliver him and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation
The Request of James and John
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. Teacher,
they said, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.
36 What do you want me to do for you? he asked.
37 They replied, Let one of us sit at your right and the other at
your left in your glory.
38 You don't know what you are asking, Jesus said. Can you drink the
cup I drink or be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with?
39 We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will drink the cup
I drink and be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with,
40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These
places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.
41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James
and John.
42 Jesus called them together and said, You know that those who are
regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials
exercise authority over them.
43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you
must be your servant,
44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Invitation to the Thirsty
1 Come, all you who arethirsty, come to the waters; and you who have
no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without
cost.
2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does
not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will
delight in the richest of fare.
3 Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will
make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.
4 See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and
commander of the peoples.
5 Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations that do
not know you will hasten to you, because of the LORD yourGod, the Holy One of
Israel, for he has endowed you with splendour.
6
Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let
him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will
freely pardon.
8
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares
the LORD.
9 As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher
than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return
to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it
yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to
me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I
sent it.
36b For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and
which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.
37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.
You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,
38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he
sent.
39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them
you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
41 I do not accept praise from men,
42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in
your hearts.
43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if
someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet
make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
45 But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser
is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.
46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about
me.
47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to
believe what I say?
