Review of Last Meetings Minutes
The
minutes of the last meeting were read and agreed on.
Any updates are included later on in the minutes.
2.
Catering Sub-Committee Report
Good
news was reported that suggestions put forward at the last meeting regarding a
jukebox to be introduced into the D Block dining area have now been taken up
and the jukebox has now been installed. It
was reported that the jukebox was provided free of charge and the revenue
gained each month from the use of the machine would be used to purchase new
tracks for the next month. The
jukebox has been widely accepted and already used a lot by students.
The only concern raised is that the volume is sometimes too loud for
those wishing to study in the dining area.
However the council agreed that the area is not primarily for private
study as other areas are provided for such use. If
students cannot study due to the volume of the music then maybe they should
study elsewhere.
The
council also agreed that a few more tables could be introduced into the area
as it is felt that there is not currently enough seating.
Action: Members of the committee to report this feedback to the
catering company and report back at the next meeting.

Comic
Relief Sub-Committee Report
The
committee reported back the finalised plans for Friday 16 March 2001 as
follows.
Lunchtime
:
Events for Years 10 & 11 only:
The Weakest Teacher
– Small Hall
Period
4 :
Events for Years 12 & 13 only:
The Weakest Teacher
– Small Hall
Variety Show (BTEC)
– Main Hall
Plans
and arrangements for ‘The Weakest Teacher ‘ have been discussed and
decided upon at the last committee meeting and the BTEC have agreed to hold on
Variety Show during period 4 for years 12 and 13.
The day will also be a non-school uniform day with a £1 donation from
students. Many students are also
doing their own sponsored events. It
was reported that sponsorship forms can be collected from either the library,
Jonathan Bugg or Hugo Williams. The
sale of Red Noses has also been sorted out – 240 have been purchased and
some have already been sold.
4.
Year 10 Business
Unfortunately
only two year 10 representatives were present and nothing was raised.
5.
Year 11 Business
Year
11 representatives raised concern over exam release for the up and coming GCSE
examinations. Many rumours have
been going around as to how much exam release year 11 will be getting.
The rumours vary from no exam release at all to some exam release being
granted but with the start date unsure. They
requested that all year 11 students are told clearly what is going to happen.
Through discussion of some of the ‘rumours’ the council did comment
on the fact that it is unreasonable for students to attend lessons in a
subject once they have completed all exams for that subject.
However, the general feeling of the council was that lessons leading up
to exams might well be a positive idea if there is a structured revision plan.
Years 12 representatives also enquired as to why they were not getting
any exam release when effectively they were taking half of the A-Level exams.
It was assumed that the year 13 exam release has not been altered due
to no new announcements of any changes. Overall
the council felt that the communication to students regarding exam release
times has been very poor and should be made clearer.
Action:
Details of exam release for the up and coming GCSE and A-Level exams to be
found out.
6.
Sixth Form Business
The
subject of car parking on site was raised due to the recent appearance of
lumps of rock being placed throughout the car parking areas.
While the council on the whole agreed to the placing of these rocks as
it does stop cars being parked on the field etc. the number of car parking
spaces is causing some concern. Students, even those with valid permits, are finding it
increasing hard to park on site. This
also results in visitors, such as the music peripatetic teachers whom we ask
to come in for our benefit, not being able to park on site.
It is the view of the council that something needs to be done to ensure
adequate car parking is available for those that truly need it.
This may mean a crack down on those who do not have a valid car-parking
permit. One such action could be
the introduction of fines / wheel clamping which the Sixth Form Committee
discussed at their last meeting. Several
sixth formers have offered to run checks on cars parked on site.
The
sixth form representatives also enquired about the purchase of a microwave and
working coffee machine in Auburn Place. These
issues were discussed and no reason found as to why they cannot happen.
7.
Any Other Business
One
point was raised as to the fairly frequent visits of ambulances to the school
regarding trampoline accidents. The
council thought that this might be due to the large size of classes meaning
that supervision of students isn’t always easy when using the equipment. The opinion is that maybe the health and safety aspects of
such activities should be looked into more in order to prevent further
accidents from occurring.
A
suggestion of cutting down registration time by ten minutes was also raised
and discussed. It is currently
the opinion of many students and staff that registration time is too long and
the extra ten minutes would be better spent at lunchtime.
The only problem raised with this was the fact that assemblies do occur
during this time and usually run over the allocated time at present.
8.
Date of Next Meeting
The
next meeting of the student council will be held on Monday 02 April 2001,
period 2 in the Community Lounge (above reception). An agenda was agreed at this meeting.
