JD Power Survey
Subaru has taken top honours again in the BBC Top Gear /
JD Power Survey of R registration cars in the UK. Half of the points
in the survey are based on the car, its reliability, performance
etc., whilst the other half are based on the customer care provided
by manufacturers.
Last year in the survey for P reg. cars, the Impreza came first in the survey and the Legacy second, and Subaru achieved the ‘Gold Award' for best manufacturer. In the N reg survey, the Impreza was first and the Legacy fourteenth, with Subaru getting the ‘Silver Award' for manufacturers.
This year in the survey of R reg (‘97-'98) cars, the Impreza and Legacy switched places to put the Legacy in the top spot, but also included this year was the Forester which came eighth. Over 24,000 questionnaires were analyzed and 115 models were included in this year's survey.
The Legacy owners gave the car 5/5 in all areas apart
from Miscellaneous Problem where it got 4/5, and a known problem area
for Subaru's cars, fuel economy, where it was given 2/5.
The Impreza came close to taking the title for a third year - as ‘Top Gear Magazine' put it:
"There's only one sense in which an Impreza is second best".
The car's heavy thirst for fuel is again its worst point this time only given 1/5. The only other area where the Impreza didn't achieve the full 5/5 was Mechanical Problems where it scored 4/5.
This was the Forester's first year of sale so it is understandable that it does not score quite as well as the more established models in the Subaru range, although its positioning in eighth is quite an achievement for its first showing. Niggles that the owners noted were with the car's hi-fi, transmission and fuel economy, but they were pleased with performance and customer care.
These results would be very difficult to better and ‘Top Gear Magazine' consider it -
"Proof that, for customer satisfaction, Subaru is in a premier league of one."
