One of the largest most successful Writers Circles in the UK, the Sutton Writers was set up in 1986 by writers looking for support and encouragement with their writing, whether for publication or purely for enjoyment and fulfilment. In 2006 we celebrated our 20th Anniversary.

Our base is a meeting room at the Civic Centre in Sutton where we meet on the second Friday of each month to catch up with the latest success stories, hear winning competition entries and listen to interesting and entertaining speakers from various sectors of the writing world. In the past we have had the opportunity to listen to many popular writers including Simon Brett, Graham Hurley and Pauline Bentley. All have a story to tell which can inspire, educate and inform. These monthly meetings begin at 8 p.m. with a chance to wander around for informal chats with other members. The Chairman opens the meeting proper with relevant notices and competition winner announcements. There is usually a chance for the winner of the previous month’s competition to read the winning entry. Then, we all settle down to enjoy the main speaker. After the talk, there is usually an opportunity to ask questions. The evening ends with the chance to catch up with fellow members and form friendships. Refreshments are available. The evening ends promptly at 10.00 p.m. The annual fee due each July, after the Annual General Meeting, is £20. This covers admission to each monthly meeting, entry to competitions, attendance at workshops and a monthly newsletter. For the main meeting, occasional visitors are charged £3.00 on the door. Established members host a series of workshops in their own homes where fellow members can read examples of their work for constructive criticism and comment. These workshops cover novel writing, drama, poetry, short stories, articles, and writing for children and teenagers. For children aged under 16, a monthly writers club is held on the third Saturday in the month at Sutton Library.
