The BKAA is a member of the AMA (Amateur Martial-Arts Association) and follows the traditional teachings of Aikido, incorporating the Ki Development exercises taught by SenseiTohei.

Currently our Dojo has levels of Kyu  from White belt to Blue belt (2nd Kyu) and other 1st and 2nd Dan grades.

We have a regular following each evening and would always welcome more.

Each training sessions is informal, although basic dojo etiquette is maintained

During our training we use open hand and weapon techniques. We introduce our novices to advanced techniques and weapons early to show what is attainable and show the effectiveness of Aikido.

Weapons we use include Tanto (Knife), Jo (Short Staff) and Bokken (Sword). At higher grades this includes Knife (Live Blade), Katana (Sword - Live Blade), Baseball Bat and Baton.

Dress

To begin loose fitting tracksuit bottoms and t-shirt is sufficient, however once the Aikido bug has taken.a Judo Gi is required

Dojo Etiquette

The training hall is traditionally called a "Dojo", literally "The place of the way". In Aikido training there is generally a relaxed atmosphere, although there are certain rules and etiquette to ensure safe practice and correct respect :

Grading

These are held locally at Swindon Dojo, or at other Dojos throughout the South of England. Twice a year the BKAA holds seminars for all grades, gradings are also held at these.

   Main Dojo is at Finsbury, London

The BKAA recognises 6 kyu grades and Dan Grades above these, currently there are several students who have achieved 1st Dan (Black Belt) at the Swindon Club and there being 1st, 2nd and 3rd Dan available to demonstrate techniques during our practice sessions.

The Kyu grades are:

Red                6th Kyu

Yellow            5th Kyu

Orange          4th Kyu

Green            3rd Kyu

Blue               2nd Kyu

Brown            1st Kyu

Membership

Membership fees are collected annually in June and at time of press:

Full                                 £28 (this includes £8 insurance to AMA)

Concession                  £20

Students (over 14)       £20 (up to leaving school)   

Mat fees       £2.50 - £3.50 each session
