| Captain's Talk 2008 Mark Sage Following
last season’s success of remaining in the We
will again be without an overseas professional seeking to rely upon local talent
to continue moving the club forward. We have no out and out stars but by
working hard as a group and concentrating upon the basics I believe that we have
sufficient ability to survive once again in this league. Hopefully as a
number of us reach the twilight of our careers the concentrated effort of
seeking to achieve success by staying in the League and trying to reach another
Lords final we will be able to raise our game to the levels required. Individuals
will need to take responsibility for their performances and need to attend
practice and training on a regular basis to ensure that the either maintain
their purple patches or get themselves with the help of others out of any trot
they may be in. We will continue to practice the basics of catching,
bowling straight and not giving our wickets away cheaply which will hopefully
make sure that we remain competitive in each game. With so many all
rounders in the side which gives us a lot of variety that most clubs do not
have, I hope will ensure that we find a matchwinner somewhere. If
each player can bring at least one outstanding performance in 4 games we should
be safe with the remainder always able to chip in as is necessary. So
batters we do need to get ourselves in and ensure that we make the scores that
make the difference namely the 80 plus on a regular basis. Bowlers, we
need consistency which means bowling maidens which in turn will bring pressure
and lead to wickets. With
a few new faces at the Club and a revamp of clubhouse and hopefully scoreboard,
we can move forward with optimism, the next generation of stars have attended
pre season nets and a few seniors are looking over their shoulders and so I am
expecting much from the group in terms of performances. Short
and sweet bit this year but predictions for the season, 5th from
bottom in league, win Village cup and B&D finalists. The seconds will
win far more games this year as the quality younger players come through and
those from last year learn from their experiences. The
thirds and fourths will continue to provide cricket for the both the next and
dare I say the past generations, but ensuring that cricket is played the right
way. Whatever happens the club will continue to go from strength to
strength due to its membership and therefore hope to see everyone in the bar. Skipper |
