BOOK COYBITO
Coybito are no longer together and will not be accepting any further gig bookings together.
GIG ARCHIVE
Coybito's Final Ever Gig, The Tuns, Coventry June 15th.
Featuring Justin Hui (drums), Stu Nasty (bass), Gonk (bass), Futureal (intro) and assorted audience members (drums/backing vocals).
So it came to this- the finale, in front of fifty-odd people in a venue which we'd never played before, but which was absolutely lovely (and reminded us a lot of previous stomping ground The Jailhouse). After a spiffy under-18s gig earlier in the day featuring Little Girl Screaming, The Rrrs and Fiori, Coybito invaded, filling the room with a mass of glitter, facepaint, technical problems, feedback and havoc. Justin from We Are The Dead and The Sequins featured on drums on 'Crossing (North-South)' and 'Paranoia Feedback', then took his drums offstage and allowed the audience to play 'I Don't Wanna See You Again' (incredibly, the ten-strong drum corp all managed to stay in time). Gonk from The Hearing made a last-minute cameo on 'Where Am I Going?'. And there was a heroic return on 'Paranoia Feedback' for the long-lost Stu Nasty, who brought his bassy rumbles while Johnny H noodled on guitar. By the end, the band were drenched in sweat and nearly blinded by glitter bombs, while The Tuns was covered in streamers, bits of Shiori's broken guitar and people devastated that they'd never hear 'Where Am I Going?' live again. If only all our gigs were like this.
Set: Crossing (North-South) * The Myth of Sisyphus * Repelling Forces * Nuclear Flame * Where Am I Going? * The Day Before The Revolution * Track X * Paranoia Feedback/I Don't Wanna See You Again
The Raggy, Exhall June 6th.
With The Dreaded Rear Admiral, Fat Champion Requiem, The Blackbelts.
Our first set after the split was announced saw Chris and Shiori go down like wildfire in front of a surprisingly rabid crowd- it seems our entire fanbase is based in Exhall. Who knew? To the sound of 'DON'T SPLIT UP' and 'COY-BI-TO' we blazed out the usual set, with backing vocals on 'Repelling Forces' and 'Where Am I Going?' ably provided by the audience. In other news from this gig, this was Stu Nasty's first gig with his new band, The Blackbelts, having not touched a bass since his final Coybito gig in 2003.
Set: Death Descends Upon The City * The Myth of Sisyphus * Repelling Forces * Nuclear Flame * Where Am I Going? * Track X * Deathseekers
Covfest 2, The Golden Cross, Coventry April 12th.
With nearly every band in Coventry.
Our second set in a fortnight? That's almost like a real band- with an audience this time. Those watching claim that the dancefloor was largely full of dancing teenage girls during much of the synth-heavy middle of the set, who were then replaced by male musos during the post-rock finale. Hey, at least we're reaching a wider audience, right? A night in which the sampler behaved itself and worked properly, Johnny stood in the middle striking goth shapes and we could hear nothing but the MARSHALL STACKS@~! onstage.
Set: Death Descends Upon The City * The Myth of Sisyphus * Repelling Forces * Where Am I Going? * Cracktown Zombie Deathfest
Dog and Trumpet, Coventry April 5th.
With The Dreaded Rear Admiral, Motherless and Half of Nothing
Returning as a three-piece after nearly a year, we essentially saw this as a warm-up for Covfest the next year- as, no doubt, did the rest of the bands, who were also nearly the entire audience. Shiori spent much of the set doing battle with his poorly-behaved synth attempting to plunge from the stand, and the set will be most noted for the debut, in embryonic form, of 'Cracktown Zombie Deathfest'.
Set: Death Descends Upon The City * The Myth of Sisyphus * Repelling Forces * Where Am I Going? * Cracktown Zombie Deathfest
Bands4Boobs, Dog and Trumpet, Coventry November 22nd.
With Touch Dynamic and Last Chance To Dance
Our first gig in ages in the D&T, which had been renovated and beiged out since our previous visit. But hey, it was a gig, and a charity gig at that. Not that we played particularly well or the gig was especially memorable, but hey, it apparently raised £1 million for charity. The documentary on the gig can be found here and was broadcast, in edited form, on Channel 5 news in December. Shiori was completely erased from the edit, much to his chagrin.
Set: Death Descends Upon The City * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * Deathseekers
Taylor John's House, Coventry April 20th.
With Swimming and The Petebox and featuring Brendan Casey on drums.
Our launch gig for 'Apocalypse Cultures' and our first gig at Taylor John's House featured a whole host of goodies: samples at the start of 'The Myth of Sisyphus', the return to our set of 'Death Descends Upon The City' and, for the first time in years, a live drummer to expand our sound. All went well, and we were able to flog some of our first box of CDs; this makes us pleased.
Set: Death Descends Upon The City * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * Track X * The Day Before The Revolution * Deathseekers
Covfest, Golden Cross, Coventry March 31st.
With Mourning Becomes Electra, The Hearing, The Senses, Ottogono, Russian Girlfriend and so on.
Coybito's 50th gig couldn't have really been anywhere else, and we were off to a fiery start, Shiori leaping from the speakers, Chris lacerating himself on his guitar, and Johnny stalking the crowd with his lead-free bass. The crowd cheered on, oblivious to our technical problems, and the gig went down a treat with the crowded Cross, who raised thousands for charity (obviously on the back of us playing and nothing else). So hooray!
Set: The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * The Day Before The Revolution * Deathseekers
Golden Cross, Coventry March 29th.
With The UK of A, The Giveaway, Ultrasonic. ...
Set: Nuclear Flame * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * The Day Before The Revolution * Deathseekers
Mine, Leeds, March 12th.
With The Electric Press, The Bloody Wowsers, various others.
Playing ten minutes at a fundraiser to promote Nightline, the student equivalent of Samaritans. Needless to say the set was rushed, and far from perfect (we couldn't hear anything, for a start), but at least we got a bottle of champagne out of it.
Set: Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * The Day Before The Revolution
St Mark's Residences, Leeds, March 11th.
A quick warm-up gig in Johnny's kitchen which was actually better attended than some of our sparser crowds, this was a well-received effort as Shiori didn't know quite where to look and Johnny (in his first gig with us since September) debuted some visuals struggled to remember our songs. At least we'd get them right the next night.
Set: Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * The Day Before The Revolution * The Myth of Sisyphus
The Golden Cross, Coventry, February 3rd.
With Death By Miss Adventure and Kristy Gallacher.
Debuting 'Death Descends Upon The City' and having one of our more enjoyable sets, thanks in part to the wacky crowd who chanted 'Coybito are better than sex!' and shouted requests. How good of them.
Set: Death Descends Upon The City * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * The Day Before The Revolution * Repelling Forces * Track X * Lebensraum * Paranoia Feedback
The Golden Cross, Coventry, January 7th.
With The Polaris.
There was no audience and nothing to plug our synths into, so we plugged it into an amp which resulted in a 1980s Eastern European industrial club sound. We sounded like, and played like, crap, and the opening band sat next to the stage heckling us for the whole set. We finished early because we couldn't be bothered continuing, and never spoke of it again until the day I wrote this. Mercifully, our next gig at the Cross was thousands of times better than this.
Set: Crossing (North-South) * Meeting Up * The Myth of Sisyphus * Repelling Forces * Track X * Nuclear Flame
2006 saw Johnny H join the band, Kyly Firemasque make a spiffing new backdrop, 'Deathseekers', 'The Day Before The Revolution', 'Sledgehammer Opiate' AND 'The Myth of Sisyphus' all make their first appearances, and Shiori unleashing the thunderstick on the world. We also travelled to Leeds and Birmingham for rare out-of-Coventry gigs and played more in the first three months of the year than in the previous two years combined.
The Golden Cross, Coventry, November 24th.
With Kan Lemons Fly?, 2 Sick Monkeys, Reverb, Wasted Daze, CITP, The Giveaway, etc. From Shiori's LJ:
"Playing without feeble things such as bassists or rehearsing, we opened with 'Nuclear Flame' and blasted through a bunch of our usual songs without being horribly exposed as shams. The microphone, however, did its best to sabotage the set, refusing to stay anywhere where I could sing and play synths at the same time and, at one point, vanishing to the floor, meaning I had to stoop down to the mic as if I were talking to Rey Mysterio Jr or something. Oh, and we did 'Whole Again' for the first time in years. Swervacious."
Set: Nuclear Flame * Meeting Up * The Day Before The Revolution * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Track X * Crossing (North-South) * Whole Again * Deathseekers
The Jailhouse, Coventry, November 4th.
From Shiori's LJ:
It was the first time Coybito had played in about two months, and we weren't exactly motivated after an awful practice. The mood worsened after Chris's pedal lost the will to live before the set (a Coybito set without guitar effects?!) and the usual three hour wait for something to happen which marks all Jailhouse all-dayers. Anyway, the first three songs weren't especially well-played or well-received, but 'Where Am I Going?' and 'Crossing (North-South)' finally got the crowd into it, and the gabba version of 'Track X' went surprisingly well.
Set: The Myth of Sisyphus * Meeting Up * Repelling Forces * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * Lebensraum * Nuclear Flame
The Golden Cross, Coventry, September 16th.
With The Decades & another.
Back at our regular stomping ground in our first gig without John, which was strange for Chris and Shiori, particularly as we played much the same set as the previous night. Still, we coped.
Set: Repelling Forces * The Myth of Sisyphus * Fragments * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * Lebensraum * Deathseekers
The Ex-Servicemans Club, Nuneaton, September 15th.
With Access, Kan Lemons Fly? and, in their debut gig, Electric Lampshade.
Our first journey to Nuneaton and Johnny's final gig with us before leaving for Leeds University, during which he unleashed a silly string machine, which Shiori reacted to in his normal calm and restrained manner by beating John to death with an afuche.
Set: Repelling Forces * The Myth of Sisyphus * Lebensraum * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * The Day Before The Revolution * Deathseekers
The Golden Cross, Coventry, August 5. With Clear Blue Skies.
Another one of those gigs which we played at a minute's notice, in which Shiori dressed as a voodoo shaman (well, more than usual). Hotness of the band members aside, it all went well and much booze was had with our visiting fans. Hooray!
Set: Lebensraum * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * Track X * Fragments * The Day Before The Revolution * Paranoia Feedback
The Cavern Club, Liverpool, Aug 2.
With Sniper, Cheap Regrets. From Shiori's LJ:
Our set, when it arrived, was decent enough, passing by as it did with no major technical errors or horrendous lacks of musical ability (well, no more than usual). Sure, my agogo fell apart, but I fixed it in time for its appearance in the set. The only real problem was in our motivation: once Chris and I deduced that there were, like, ten people in the audience, we struggled NOT to fall into "who gives a shit?"-style feelings.
Set: The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Lebensraum * Sledgehammer Opiate * Repelling Forces * Track X * The Day Before The Revolution * Paranoia Feedback
The Jailhouse, Coventry, Jul 9.
We played this one on our own on World Cup final day: the other band who were scheduled were Italian- I'm sure that you can guess they didn't show up. Nonetheless, we played our set as scheduled at a virtually abandoned Jailhouse.
Set: Lebensraum * Nuclear Flame * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * Track X * The Day Before The Revolution * Crossing (North-South) * Paranoia Feedback
Rock Synchrony, The Golden Cross, Coventry, Jul 1.
With Cafe Racer, Ten Days, Five Days Long, The Bootleg Poets, Evilson, Dead Crooners, The Way, Iola + dozens of acoustic acts. From Shiori's LJ:
It seems Brendan Sequin has been brainwashing people into the cult of Coybito, and they were a super crowd (cheering 'Where Am I Going?' as soon as it started, and stuff). The set went alright until 'Crossing (North-South)', where technical problems led to a seemingly endless delay in the set, causing the dropping of 'The Day Before The Revolution'. Boo!
Set: Lebensraum * The Myth of Sisyphus * Where Am I Going? * Repelling Forces * Track X * Crossing (North-South) * Paranoia Feedback
The Foleshill Festival, Foleshill, June 17.
With Kufari, Seymour, Fine Vibes, CV5, others Featuring Futureal (intro) and Kyly Firemasque (firebreathing).
Our return to Foleshill was just as chaotic as the previous time, with the entire generator packing up during Kufari's set, the wind making firebreathing difficult, and the sun making playing difficult. Still, blasted through a set nobody in Foleshill will dare forget, else we come back and play another.
Set: Paranoia Feedback * The Myth of Sisyphus * Track X * Nuclear Flame * Crossing (North-South)
The White Horse, Leamington, June 14.
With The Kicks, Ten Days.
Our first time in Leamington, and they'd thoughtfully positioned the stage near some stairs, enabling Shiori to do epic leaps during 'The Myth of Sisyphus'. It was also the first time we'd done 'Repelling Forces' properly as well, so hooray.
Set: The Myth of Sisyphus * Repelling Forces * Where Am I Going? * Lebensraum * Fragments * Sledgehammer Opiate * The Day Before The Revolution * Deathseekers
The Golden Cross, Coventry, June 3.
With Respond, Lost The Plot. Featuring the debut of 'Repelling Forces'.
A birthday celebration for one of the regulars featured us doing 'Happy Birthday' So Solid Crew-style, followed by our reworking of 'Fragments'. The gig went OK.
Set: Happy Birthday * Fragments * Repelling Forces * The Myth of Sisyphus * Lebensraum * Where Am I Going? * Track X * The Day Before The Revolution * Deathseekers
Emily's Cake Party, Coventry, May 12th 2006.
Another house party, initially scheduled to take place outside on a patio, but which had to be abandoned due to rain. Instead, the audience lined up against one wall Usual Suspects-style while Coybito lined up against another one. Little jumping around possibility, but the songs were played alright (Except 'Sledgehammer Opiate') and the party continued with no notable decline in quality.
Set: The Myth of Sisyphus * Lebensraum * Where Am I Going? * Track X * Sledgehammer Opiate * The Day Before The Revolution * Crossing (North-South) * Deathseekers
The Earlsdon Festival, Hearsall Common, May 1st 2006.
With The Way, Fire Daze, Tawn, The Kicks.
Opening the Earlsdon Festival to a mass of raving Coybitoids, the band took full advantage of the improbably large stage by jumping about everywhere and roaming with the radio mics. Kyly Firemasque stole the show with her firebreathing, which was a damn good job as the set prior to that had been a farce of suicidal synths (Shiori's DJX plunged off its stand during 'Deathseekers'), inaudible guitars and general messiness. Fun!
Set: The Myth Of Sisyphus * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * The Day Before The Revolution * Deathseekers * Nuclear Flame
The Jailhouse, April 22nd 2006.
With Girlsplayboys, TAT.
Playing with a band that Shiori went through a brief obsession with, Coybito played probably Shiori's favourite gig, including 'Where Am I Going?' being played unusually fast, Shiori jumping off the speakers during the finale of the set, and probably the best sound we've ever enjoyed onstage. Shi attempted to pull every rockstar pose possible in an attempt to outshine TAT. Whether we succeeded or not is a matter for the courts.
Set: The Myth Of Sisyphus * Lebensraum * Where Am I Going? * Track X * Nuclear Flame * The Day Before The Revolution * Crossing (North-South) * Deathseekers
Caludon Centre Fundraiser, The Hope and Anchor, April 21st 2006.
With Little Girl Screaming, Honeytrap.
Raising money for the Caludon Centre, Coybito headlined a set at a venue that they'd barely ever been to before and had a fun night, despite barely-audible vocals. 'The Day Before The Revolution' made its debut at this performance, and fun times were had. Also, we raised £125 for the cause, which is always good.
Set: Lebensraum * Where Am I Going? * The Myth Of Sisyphus * Track X * Sledgehammer Opiate * The Day Before The Revolution * Crossing (North-South) * Deathseekers
The Jailhouse, April 8th 2006.
With Lust and Found.
Stealing the headline slot at the Jailhouse having been offered a spot two days prior, Shiori wearing a new voodoo-ish outfit and Lust & Found in tow, a hot barman to stare at...what could go wrong? Well, everything: original headliners Digital Garden didn't even turn up, 'The Myth of Sisyphus' had to be restarted and even when it WAS, the mic wasn't on, and 'Sledgehammer Opiate' was a mess due to Chris's KFC-greased fingers. By 'Nuclear Flame', nobody- not even the Coybitoids- could be arsed clapping (aside from our favourite supporter Kyly). Still, at least the rare outing for 'Paranoia Feedback' went OK, during which Shiori leapt off the amp and climbed the (unforgiving) steel bars at the side of the Jhouse- a lifelong ambition- and the dude who'd travelled from RUSSIA to see us (?!) enjoyed the set.
Set: The Myth Of Sisyphus * Sledgehammer Opiate * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * Lebensraum * Nuclear Flame * Deathseekers * Paranoia Feedback
THE MICRO-TOUR WITH HOBO EXILE HOTEL
The Golden Cross, April 2 2006.
Also with The Chairman, Star27, A Dear Investment, Gideons, Somnus.
The Spotted Dog, Birmingham, April 1st 2006.
Also with Terminal Subject.
Read about the tour here.
The M347L Lounge, March 17th 2006.
The eighth gig of the year for Coybito, in which Johnny debuted his homemade bass amp, Shiori climbed on the amp stack~!, and Chris managed to cut himself open on his E-string. Technical problems everywhere in the middle of the set due to Shi and Blood's self-indulgence, and a microphone stand made out of a kitchen light was the other notable thing about the set.
Set: Where Am I Going? * The Myth Of Sisyphus * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * (I Was A) Temptation Island (Whore) * Lebensraum * Nuclear Flame * Deathseekers
Earlsdon Cottage, March 11th 2006.
With Honeytrap.
A gig run by the band themselves, the Earlsdon Cottage gig was looking like a washout attendance-wise until mere minutes before Coybito played. However, the sudden emergence of a bunch of new people anxious to hear Coybito led to a surprisingly exhilirating gig, with requests (!) for 'Paranoia Feedback' and an intro by Futureal that guaranteed the crowd would love us.
Set: Nuclear Flame * (I Was A) Temptation Island (Whore) * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * The Myth Of Sisyphus *Lebensraum * Deathseekers * Paranoia Feedback
Joseph's Well, Leeds, March 6th 2006.
With Time To Leave, Nuttyskunk and P.O.M.S.
Only our second out-of-Coventry gig, and an enjoyable one at that, with the Leeds-based Matt Organic making a surprise cameo on bass due to Johnny's unavailability. Anyway, 'Fragments' and '(I Was A) Temptation Island (Whore)' both sounded better for their rest, while Shiori bounced all over the place in joy of a rare high-ceilinged venue, and Chris dedicated 'Track X' to "all the cats".
Set: Where Am I Going? * Meeting Up * Crossing (North-South) * Fragments * (I Was A) Temptation Island (Whore) * Lebensraum * Track X * Paranoia Feedback
The Jailhouse, March 2nd 2006.
With Reverb and Lovemat.
With Shiori harnessing the spirit of Zombina and the Skeletones with his make-up, the Coybitoids had a fun time returning to the Jailhouse on a snowy night in March. The newest songs sounded wonderful, and the only problems were Shiori's guitar strap coming undone mid-'Track X' (Firemasque saved us), and a few guitar amp malfunctions. Still, a good performance.
Set: Nuclear Flame * Meeting Up * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * The Myth Of Sisyphus *Lebensraum * Deathseekers
Coybito Towers, February 18th 2006.
Interesting times here, as Coybito opened up their rehearsal space to hordes of people. Additionally, the parallel-universe fancy-dress theme meant that Chris was in a dress and John was dressed as a member of the Streets. The gig generally went well, aside from the DJX adding a random element by going into 'distort' at random intervals, and Chris's guitar mysteriously falling silent towards the end of the debuting 'The Myth Of Sisyphus'. We also added Futureal to introduce us.
Set: Nuclear Flame * Meeting Up * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * The Myth Of Sisyphus * Paranoia Feedback * Lebensraum * Deathseekers
The Golden Cross, February 2 2006.
With Vigilante Wing and the Bootleg Poets.
Our final gig with Matt, featuring the return of a couple of covers AND 'Fragments'. Shiori nearly fell to his death as he plummeted from the amp he was stood on at the end of the gig, and Chris ripped the strings off his guitar in a fit of rage. Matt, meanwhile, contrived to break his bass strings within the SECOND song, meaning VW had to save the day with a bass loan in a night generally beset by technical chaos for all three bands. All the band sang, and despite having no soundcheck and Shiori barely hearing his guitar all night, the gig was highly critically acclaimed by those present.
Set: Nuclear Flame * Fragments * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * Meeting Up * You Suffer * Paranoia Feedback * Lebensraum * I Don't Wanna See You Again
The Jailhouse, January 29 2006,
With Merge, Reverb, and Lust And Found.
Gig 20 from Coybito, and everything changing. John joined us on bass in his first ever live performance ever, which was extremely pleasant for all concerned. 'Deathseekers' closed the set to critical acclaim from the screaming masses. And Kyly Firemasque came up with a wonderful backdrop for us to perform in front of. An enjoyable comeback to the Jailhouse, and one of Shiori's favourite Coybito gigs of ever. Photos, you say? I have those. Here you go..
Set: Nuclear Flame * Meeting Up * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Track X * Paranoia Feedback * Lebensraum * Deathseekers
The Golden Cross, January 7 2006.
With Fujiwara Armbar and A Dear Investment.
Coybito filled a gap in the Golden Cross's schedule with two hours notice and did so with aplomb, debuting the thunderstick and Shiori's guitar effects pedal. With no rehearsals prior to the gig, there was, alas, no time to debut new songs. Shiori's singing wasn't the greatest ever, but at least his stage banter was alright. Also notable: Wrestling-style "COYBITO!" chants from the maniacal crowd and dancing from plenty of new people. Woo!
Set: Nuclear Flame * (I Was A) Temptation Island (Whore) * Where Am I Going? * Crossing (North-South) * Lebensraum * Paranoia Feedback * Track X
A bit busier than the previous year, Shiori and Chris played a couple of gigs on their own due to Matt's unavailability. 'Nuclear Flame' and 'Crossing (North-South)' turned up for the first time, and we played the Golden Cross for the first time. We also made the local press, featured in the Coventry Citizen. Plus, the Coybitoid Dance Troupe made their appearances.
The Golden Cross, Coventry, November 17th. With Resound, Vacant Fear Centre and The Starlings.
Not the worst Coybito gig ever, although the audience weren't exactly PUMPED and neither was Shiori, whose impeding wedding was weighing on his mind. Still, playing the set in an unusual order at least made a change for the band. For photos of the show, check here.
Set: (I Was A) Temptation Island (Whore) * Nuclear Flame * Crossing (North-South) * Paranoia Feedback * Lebensraum * Track X
The Jailhouse, October 26 2005.
With Airhammer, Kinerfozics and the Starlings
An enjoyable gig for Chris, Shiori and Matt, made more so by a relaxed Shiori and an enjoyable couple of support bands. Although most of the crowd swanned off home before we came on (ironic, given that the Jailhouse's programme railed against people doing exactly that), we still had a pretty large crowd enjoy our usual nonsense.
Set: Nuclear Flame * Meeting Up * Fragments * Crossing (North-South) * Where Am I Going? * Lebensraum * Paranoia Feedback/I Don't Wanna See You Again * Track X
The Jailhouse, September 6 2005.
With Six Second Hero, Naked Lilly Rock and Three Stories High.
Yech. Opening at the Jailhouse for the first time in ages, Chris and Shiori didn't have the best of it, with Shiori's guitar playing up, feedback all over the place, and Shiori's facepaint running into his eye and nearly blinding him during the debuting 'Crossing (North-South)'. The crowd, however, enjoyed it and even bought our CDs, proving as usual that Coybito have no idea what's good for them.
Set: Nuclear Flame * Fragments * Crossing (North-South) * Meeting Up * Where Am I Going? * Lebensraum * Paranoia Feedback * Track X
Golden Cross, June 4 2005. With Iola.
A free gig celebrating a Cross regular's birthday that we didn't find out about- at all- until 24 hours earlier, Coybito were down to just Shiori and Chris at this point, which meant the first ever two-guitars-no-bass set from your beloved invaders. 'Meeting Up' was dug out of mothballs, some random bloke pointed and stared at us, Shiori played guitar, synth, bass and drums, Shiori's girlfriend Kyly featured on '(I Was A) Temptation Island (Whore)', and Iola soundchecked for TWO HOURS.
Set: Happy Birthday Marky G * Nuclear Flame * (I Was A) Temptation Island Whore * Meeting Up * Fragments * Where Am I Going? * Lebensraum * Paranoia Feedback/I Don't Wanna See You Again
Golden Cross, March 31 2005.
With Grim Reaper.
'Nuclear Flame' made a surprise debut and 'Paranoia Feedback' surprisingly turned into a piano-led burst of insanity at one of our best-attended gigs ever, boosted by the Coybitoid dance troupe looking sexy on the dance floor. There were multiple technical problems, as is eternally the case: mainly, the bass monopolising the sound to ridiculous levels. But, generally, an enjoyable enough comeback from Shiori, Matt and Blood.
Not many gigs in 2004. This is partially because Shiori spent most of it living away from Coventry, and spent much of the latter half involved with various hells. Anyway, we kept busy. Matt joined the band, we released 'Journeys Through The Moral Zeitgeist', recorded a video for 'Where Am I Going?' and a rambling, self-indulgent interview, and we played a few weird gigs, debuting 'You Suffer' and 'Track X' along the way.
Coventry Colosseum's "Alternative Glastonbury" micro-fest, June 27 2004.
With Fiori, Hobo Exile Hotel.
Sort of lame curtain-jerking performance, made worse by the fact that the doors didn't open until AFTER WE'D STARTED. Should've expected it: this was Invasion Part 13. Highlights were 'Lebensraum' and 'Fragments', key lowlight was the shoddy 'I Don't Wanna See You Again' segment. Key debuts in this set: A homemade T-shirt and a radio mic, which allowed Shiori to sing some of Lebensraum without even being in the room (the mic, not the T-shirt). Feedback on this gig from Hobo Exile Hotel: "I've never seen anything like it in my life".
Whitefriars Beer Festival, Coventry, May 31 2004:
With Neil Heath, L.Inc, No Place Like Home.
Watch Coybito turn up to find no promoter, amplifiers or audience, then 'enjoy' a two-hour acoustic cabaret set. Watch a horde of teenagers suddenly become Coybito groupies. Watch them scream our names. Watch Coybito play Napalm Death's "You Suffer", bring back "August" and bewilder the masses. Once again, Coybito grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat. Learn more, why doncha?
Dogfest, Dog and Trumpet, Coventry, May 8 2004:
With The Fatal Mistake, Ex-T, Crusher Destroyer, Counteract, Tiny Voices.
Matt Organic's debut, in which Coybito were made to sound like Vulva from 'Spaced'. (Counteract also suffered a similar fate- their extreme metal was made to sound like an experimental vocals-n-drums duo.) Still, Shiori did finish with "YOU STUPID BUNCH OF FUCKS!!!!" so not all was lost. What on Earth are we talking about? Check this out.
Ah, 2003. Our busiest year to date, including our eccentric tour, leaving Coventry for the first time, playing a fair few new songs, and recording our EP in deepest Llanfyllin. Sheets joined for a while, but it didn't work out. Twiggy and Beard also passed through Coybito in 2003. This'd be Stu's last hurrah with the band, and indeed after university finished for Shiori, the band went on hiatus for nearly a year.
The Far Gosford Street... And Beyond Tour!, June 2003
Our four gig cycle of touring death, played in a two-week span. The gigs were as follows:
The Phoenix, Coventry, June 3 2003
(w/ Evenflowerskill and Tim)
The Hand and Heart, Coventry, June 12, 2003
(w/ The Hearing and Matt Ashenden);
Hangover's Bar, Birmingham, June 13 2003
(w/ The Danglers);
Foleshill Festival, Foleshill, June 14 2003
(w/ various people and featuring Twiggy).
For more on this insanity, look here for info.
The Jailhouse, Coventry, May 9 2003:
With Atom and his Package, Seven Stories and Let The Wookie Win.
An amazing gig, in which Coybito finally delivered on their promise and played well. Highlights were (I Was A) Temptation Island Whore and Lebensraum, although some would argue that Shiori and Boxman's stunt-laden brawl at the end was up there. Anything to add, Stu? "No."
Colosseum, Coventry, Feb 21 2003:
With Sandstone and The Phase. Unfortunately, due to Coventry University Reading Week, Coybito's usual mob of fans was absent, as indeed were most of the people who went to the Colosseum. As a result, Shiori was faced with the task of whipping virtually no-one into a frenzy, a task that proved beyond him. And Stu Nasty had literally just got in from work. Worse, August was complete chaos due to miscommunication over guitar leads (ie, Shiori wasn't listening). Still, the two new songs (Reservation Blues and I Was A Temptation Island Whore) were OK, Paranoia Feedback even attracted groupies, and we got drunk.
Punk-Metal All Dayer, The Jailhouse, Coventry, Jan 25 2003:
With Five Knuckle and Gravel Trap, among others. Special guest: Andy Beard from Evenflowerskill.
Shiori started wearing full make-up (to the horror of his girlfriend CJW), Stu got on the mic, Boxman complained about Shiori's review of the gig (don't ask), and Paranoia Feedback descended into complete havoc when guest drummer Andy Beard from Evenflowerskill turned up. Lacklustre, probably due to the 5-hour wait for a soundcheck that never came (cheers, Outside Edge), but went down like wildfire with our biggest crowd yet.
Coybito played live for the first time in 2002, much to the horror of everyone. We had a few drummers in our opening sets before settling down as the three-piece we continue to be.
Jailbreakers, The Jailhouse, Coventry, Dec 16 2002:
With Outside Edge, Red Trap and Franklin.
Who else but Shiori Coybito and his mob would play a gig with no drummer, interminable guitar disasters, deafening bass and stand-up comedy from "a freak in make-up" and STILL get more positive feedback than ever before? Lebensraum got its first ever playing here, featuring a zany bongo spree by Shiori.
The Colosseum, Coventry, May 31 2002:
Supporting the band Pinhole, who made Peel's Festive Fifty later that year.
The debut of Invincible and the special guest services of Iola and Malachai drummer Jam, all on the Colly's trendy night, fragile barriers, questionable band T-shirts and all. Information indepth here.
The Jailhouse, Coventry, May 20 2002:
Our first gig, featuring Mikey G of Twelve Tone Proof and the Levites. The only time Shiori wore purple live. Information indepth here, and all new- photos from the gig here.
