Based in Knutsford, THE TATTON SINGERS were founded in 1976

History and Aims

THE TATTON SINGERS is an SATB mixed community choir based in Knutsford, Cheshire.

It has a tradition of presenting high-quality concerts of choral music. It was formed during 1976 and is now a well-balanced choir of some sixty-five voices. It has grown to its present strength from small beginnings when six singers first met to form a choral group. During this time the Society’s reputation for adventurousness and exciting music making has developed.

A policy of in-depth preparation during sustained periods of regular rehearsals has facilitated the growth of a friendly, well-knit community choir, capable of successfully presenting some very demanding works. Whilst by no means neglecting the well-known choral repertoire, The Tatton Singers regularly brings to audiences some of the less-frequently performed items of choral music.

Since 2005 the Choir’s Musical Director has been John Powell. Under his guidance it has continued to uphold and strengthen the English choral tradition by performing public concerts to a high standard with professional soloists, and regular use of an orchestra.

The singing membership of the society includes trained, experienced singers and others with little formal musical education. The qualities that make it possible for all these to perform effectively together are enthusiasm, tolerance and above all, commitment to attaining the highest standard possible under inspiring direction.

Anyone who joins with these qualities will discover, if they do not know it already, that singing is one of the most satisfying group activities.
